I'm a big fan of gritty, post-apocalyptic worlds. There's something about them that fires my imagination right up. This world was wonderfully dark and broken and I loved the glimpses into the past that showed us how it had gotten to that point, but I do wish we'd been given a little more resolution at the end. I actually went back and reread the ending just to see if I had missed something and I still felt like it needed a little more explanation or... something to tie up the story to my satisfaction. (To be fair, that could just be me. I like things to not be easy and this ending came on fast and hard. Kinda like Clay. *snicker*)

That said, Clay's desire to do the right thing where Rosina was concerned was both awesome (yay for not forcing his attentions on her) and heartbreaking (boo for making her think he's a cold-hearted soldier who yearns for no woman). Rosina's fantasies and her inability to read him made for some sweetly awkward moments. And when they finally did toss aside their inhibitions and go for it? Sex-ay.

Enjoyable, but I personally wouldn't have minded a slightly longer story that gave us a more drawn out ending. I don't think I'm explaining that well, because the ultimate arc was tied up. I just wanted more, okay? More sexy times, more explanation as to the resolution. Just more.

Rosina has been cursed so that the rain will injure her and put her in a deep sleep. Major Clay Worthington has been given the job to protect her from the marauders who wander the land since the war began over 100 years ago. No one knows why the war even began. Nicodemus, the storyteller, relates the story of why. Clay now understands why he is so attracted to Rosina but she is in a deep sleep and his feelings cannot wake her.

I enjoyed this story. It's a different take on Sleeping Beauty. I liked how both Rosina and Clay tried to save each other but it seems as though love's true kiss will not work and they are at a loss on what to do. The story of how the war started was interesting as was the connection between Rosina and Clay. I look forward to more of these Beyond Fairytales.

Though well written and unique, I found myself not captivated by the retelling of the classic tale. It felt very dark and twisty, and if that was the authors intent, she did an amazing job of it. Even with the amount of detail given, I was left a little lost as the author just touched on details. I love when a story draws me in and while the blurb and cover captured my attention, the story left me wanting more. Rosina was an unusual woman who was lost and looking for herself, Clay was a warrior who finds himself drawn to her and intent on protecting her in her journey. If readers want something different, this could be the book they are looking for.
