One might be excused for assuming that an idyllic life unfolds for those who have chosen to live and work near the shores of Crater Lake. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Long-time resident, Izzy Montgomery juggles the stress of a new job with her burgeoning home life. Family dynamics go into overdrive when Alexander and Cynthia launch plans to build a home nearby and Liam’s sister, Fiona shows up to do an internship with the local doctor. Lisa-Marie and Justin are back for the summer and sparks fly. While crusty, old Reg keeps sawmill production booming, Beulah runs the organic bakery and plans the First Annual Caleb Jenkins Memorial Ball Tournament. Bethany discovers her own hidden talents working with young people at Micah Camp.
As a nine-year-old’s dreams reflect a dangerous reality, many encounter issues from the past. This is a novel for all those who work at building family ties by strengthening the traditional and creating the new. Chasing Down the Night explores a wide-ranging emotional landscape while highlighting the many aspects of day-to-day, rural life. Tears and laughter are inevitable.
I live in a small, off-the-grid cabin in a remote location, right beside a lake. My husband, Bruce and our elderly dog, Lawson keep me company.
Can you imagine a better setting for a writer? I can’t.
We have an alternate power system for our home –a combination of micro-hydro and solar electric panels. I write with a panoramic view of the lake every, single day.
Between May and September, Billy Bob the Bear drops over to graze on the green cover (we don’t have the nerve to call it grass) and eat huckleberries and salal berries. Now and then I spot the tracks of a cougar who has made his way across the property. Life is good here in the hinterlands.
I have a daughter and son – both happily married and pursuing interesting careers. I also have two beautiful and wildly funny granddaughters who constantly provide me with inspiration for writing.
For most of my life I have been an educator of one type or another. I have an MA in counselling psychology and an almost completed PhD in educational psychology. Enough said about that!
If you check out my blog you'll find out everything you ever might have wanted to know about me - from stories of my journey to self-publish my first novel to what kind of music gets me weepy.
Izzy’s working life has changed and, she feels, not always for the better. She has taken over the job of Director at Micah Camp after Roland, the previous director, and his new love Jillian decided to go travelling, and is finding it quite stressful. She’s dealing with the repercussions of a large one-off donation to the Camp, the allocation of which includes expansion plans and all that entails. An accident in the kitchen means looking for a new Cook, coupled with the arrival of the incoming residents and the new trauma counsellor who is taking over Izzy’s old job, make her seriously doubt the wisdom of taking on her new position.
Liam meanwhile is taking care of the domestic side, staying at home to look after Sophie, home school Robbie and plan for his and Izzy’s wedding. Lisa-Marie and Justin are back for the summer and Bethany finds her place as Researcher at the Camp. Beulah is stirring up memories Izzy is finding difficulty in coming to terms with, when she proposes the First Annual Caleb Jenkins Memorial Ball Tournament. Alex and Cynthia and Alex’s daughter, Fiona, add to Izzy’s ever growing family and bring more First Nation people into the story.
I wondered at the relevance of the magnificent cougar pictured on the cover. He begins the story and is a recurring theme throughout, intermingled with Robbie’s disturbing dreams, which brings in a kind of mystical connection with a boy who already has visionary qualities.
A wonderfully written story, again set against the beautiful Crater Lake backdrop with a cast of characters old, who are a pleasure to meet again, and new to add to the mix. Although the setting is perfect and appears peaceful, life for the residents is not always so. Emotional issues and baggage from the past must be worked through and dealt with, including love and loss for some.
I love this series…the characters, the dynamics of their sometimes complex relationships, the kinship and how their lives intertwine. The beautifully vivid setting, described so well. And the quality of the writing which just flows easily and skilfully through a compelling narrative.
I was very happy to return to Crater Lake! I'd missed both the cast of characters and the gorgeous setting. Francis's writing keeps me engaged as she moves from story to story and I love that she offers a close window into the struggles and thoughts of each character. Her background in counseling and psychology brings a depth to the personal struggles of the characters and she always offers multiple perspectives to the challenges they face. Chasing Down the Night brings some new and interesting characters along with the ones I already loved like Robbie with his supernatural gift and the addition of the cougar brought it to a new level. I hope that Francis misses her cast enough to bring us another installment!
These characters are beginning to feel like family, and as such, I want more of them with all their complexities and frustrations coupled with their obvious personal growth and escapades along the way. I worry about them at times and feel joy when all goes right for them. There is one young man I would like to shake regarding his actions and choices...but I have a feeling all will be changing in book four.
Loved the series that this book was a part of. Hope to see book 4 in this series soon! Have to know what happened to Justin, Lisa-Marie and Robbie. There are so many scenarios going through my head about this book that I can't stop thinking about all the characters! Author really nailed it on so many true life scenarios.
Enjoyed the first two books of the series more, there was so much more description of the environment of Crater Lake, the beautiful views, etc. This book added some more characters and seemed to be more of a romance novel than the others. Got to a point when a name would come up, I'd have to wrack my brain to think of who it was. I've never been a fan of unrequited love stories, all the way back to The Thornbirds. The Lisa Marie and Justin story is getting old.
This group of people living in a small settlement on the banks of Crater Lake on Vancouver Island continue to grow, change, realign, and connect in ever changing and interesting ways. I am already on to book 4 and hoping book 5 appears soon.
Enjoyed the characters stories . Setting was amazingly descriptive. Loved the new characters. Am hoping there will be a 4th book as some storylines are left only to the readers imagination.
I have now completed the third book in this series and can't wait for the Summer when the next will be released. These books take place in a beautiful setting that the author describes so vividly you will feel as if you are there. The characters are believable and range in all ages. You get to follow each character through their relationships of love and loss between family, friends, and lovers. These books will have you laughing, crying, and riding every human emotion while following great stories. A must read for all!!!
This was a wonderful third book in the series. It was like going home for summer and seeing all your friends and family. I can't wait for the 4 th book. I wish crater lake was a real place it sounds so beautiful. Thank you Frances please keep writing.
Great sequel. The family at Crater Lake grows in interesting ways. If you love a wedding, you'll enjoy the book. If you love a bumpy love story, you'll love the book. If you want a read that treats diverse characters and cultures with respect, you'll love the book. Off to read book four in the series!
