To complete their self sufficiency, Blake and Sandra take a team to check out the area and acquire some livestock. Things aren't always as easy at they seem on the surface. Neal and Patty escape the inner city in Michigan to flee. An odd acquaintance gives Neal an inheritance that may just save his life. Can the computer specialist cope with the grid going down? People must learn and adapt to survive in wreckage left behind when America's grid goes down and lives become meaningless. Their only hope is to hold on to their humanity, safety and security. This book is 32,500 words.
Neal has autism and tries to avoid people but has to help his neighbour Patty when a group of ISIS supporting men try to rape her in the EMP aftermath. The men are released due to the disaster getting worse and the radicals are attacking everyone, but the arresting cop manages to get warning to them that they are all targets now and it is time to flee. Back at the homestead, the group are trying to find out more about the cannibals which puts them all in danger, while David gets word of when the rest of the raiders are coming.
This is the first book in the series where a new story is introduced to run alongside the group that we know from the previous books. In this second plot, we learn that ISIS caused the EMP and sleeper agents are ordering a radical uprising to attack Americans and strategic targets. Neal and Patty stumble across the plans in a dead terrorists backpack and wonder who to give it to. We follow their story as they try to flee, keeping away from places where they might encounter people but of course things don't go according to plan. I wasn't sure at first about the new characters but I grew to like them as they made their journey. It was interesting to have a character with autism and see how it affects his ability to survive in the apocalypse. Patty was the kind of person you want a best friend to be and meeting her under these circumstances, you get sucked into her story.
We also get to see how things are going at the homestead with Blake and Sandra trying to juggle newly married life and the responsibility of adopting Chris child as their own child. The women from the harem start integrating into the community, giving them more numbers for sharing chores and guard duty. I like seeing the ordinary tasks of day to day living going on as the apocalypse looms in the background. I also liked seeing the development of David as a character, with him wanting to prove that he is not a bad guy, and wanting to become part of the community.
But of course it is the apocalypse which causes most of their problems, or to be more accurate, the other survivors. Somewhere near them are a group of modern day cannibals who hunt with bow and arrow, and Blake is anxious about the danger being posed to them every time they leave the homestead to hunt or grab supplies. Medicine is high on their list but with cannibals roaming nearby, Blake wants to find out where they are living before the cannibals discover the homestead. Of course I was very nervous of this plan as there isn't a character that I don't like. It does make the book exciting though, when our characters go off into potentially dangerous situations!
For me it is the mix of characters that you care about, well written action, tense scenes of danger and the emotion of when things go really great or badly wrong that make this series so enjoyable. They are not superstars, just normal people learning new skills and adapting to a different life from what we take for granted. I could imagine the homestead and being there with them. This series certainly has me gripped and I was speeding through the books one after the other!
The NATO oppressing Americans, using them as slaves comparing it as concentration camps and bands of young Muslims chasing women through the streets? A hiding 44th president?
This is not only a misuse of history, showing some degree of disrespect but also presenting a deep rooted fear as well as a lack of tremendous knowledge I am not willing to entertain any longer.
It gets personal when the good guys take a hit...the story rolls on with the addition of a few new characters, good and bad. A good, but sad story, with at least one good, happy moment thrown in. Live your life and follow your heart in times like these--you never know what the future holds. Still loving this series, one of the authors earlier works. His first with more than a couple of books in it, I believe. The proof-reading does get better. My only issue with this one is the comment someone makes about not having any more eggs because they don't have a rooster! It wouldn't stick in my craw, but no one else in the conversation corrected whoever made the comment--you don't need a rooster for a hen to lay eggs, the rooster only makes them fertile so they can hatch out! (Dammit, Boyd!) Still a good story, and the new characters add to the well-rounding of the plot. On to #4!
Blake Jackson and several of his new extended family take off to acquire livestock and supplies from nearby farms that have been deserted or the owners killed. On their way back they come under attack and discovery more atrocities being committed. Will they be able keep their homestead a secret or end up fighting for their own survival again?
Craven’s 3rd installment in The World Burns series, The World Hungers, introduces new characters, Neal and Patty, as they escape Ann Arbor. Neal is a high functioning autistic who is a computer specialist. Patty is his neighbor. Together they flee the city only to run into the worst of mankind.
The novella shows that no matter how well prepared you are there is always someone out there who can try and take it all away from you. Oh, and, there is another wedding.
This is the third book in the series and it continues the saga of Blake, Sandra, their family, and friends. The reader is introduced to Neal and Patty, a couple from Ann Arbor, Michigan. From the viewpoint of Neal and Patty, the reader learns what has happened in the cities. This series is realistic and the characters are well written and we'll developed, plus the series has a load of information about survival.
I love this author and the way that he combines different characters to tell a compelling story of post apocalyptic suspense. The Christian values of the heroes, despite the chaos of war, gives the reader time to enjoy the bonds the community form. I just have one question, why does the Pastor not pray with the group before embarking on dangerous escapades.?
The World Hungers (The World Burns #3) continues the excellence in the series. Follow the characters as they continue to expand their homestead, rescuing other needful folks and creating an oasis of peace in an apocalyptic world. This is a great series, if you haven't started it yet, do so.
The hits just keep on coming! Frying pans and fires abound (literally and figuratively) in this segment of the story, and the cliffhanger at the end has me running to read the next book. Keep em coming!
The story expands from the homestead north to unexpected survivors. I love how each of these books expand the world from surviving to giving glimpses of the larger plot against the U.S. I'm ready for more!
This story just keeps getting more and more intense. The group is growing steadily but so are the number of enemies they have to deal with. Can't wait to start the next one.
Great storyline with interesting characters. Plenty intrigue and action. Quite an adventure. After an EMP goes off chaos rains but now we learn an invasion is underway.
The story was okay, I just didn't like the jumping back and forth of the two story lines even though I knew they would connect up later on in the story.
The World Hungers is book three in a post apocalyptic series. An EMP has taken everyone off the grid, those who left it years ago have the upper hand. As the title tell us things are getting harder for the survivors. There are some new characters introduced in this one, all of them not good. A good read, in fact I downloaded them all. I give this one three stars, I liked it. Shorter novel. No swearing, there is violence and implied sexual content as well as talk of rape, and cannibalism. I can recommend for ages 17 and up.
This author has written a very good story in a series of books that I highly recommend. The story revolves around an EMP from an unexpected attack on the U.S. The characters are well developed and the main characters persist thru all of the books in this series. Other characters are featured for less time. The pace of the book / series is rapid with no places that bog down. There is only minimal cussing and nowhere is God cursed. This book / series really held my attention, entertained me, and left me with a positive feeling. I highly recommend it.
What a great third book! What an unbelievable ending!! Want to know what happens?.... Start reading this series. The books are easy to read with a fast pace to follow and so many moments that I either learned something or thought that I knew better than the characters. But everyone is just trying to survive, protect what they have and try to avoid mistakes that could prove fatal. 'The World Burns' is an addictive series. I can't wait to start the fourth book, 'Tears Of The World'!
My only question, when is the next book coming out? I love the new characters. As I both love and hate the cliffhanger ending! Well developed in the survival information it contains and could easily be used in reality. I am anxious to see where the installment goes!
I liked the story, but I have a problem with the length of these "Books". They are more like chapters, seems like just about the time it starts getting good, it's over
