About the author

François Schuiten was born in Brussels in 1956, as the son of two architects. He studied at the Saint-Luc Institute where he met Claude Renard. Together, they created the comics 'Aux Médianes de Cymbiola' and 'Le Rail', as well as three volumes of '9ème Rêve'. François also collaborated with his brother Luc on the series 'Terres Creuses' which was published in the legendary Pilote magazine. His final breakthrough into the mainstream of comics came with his transfer to the more adult Métal Hurlant magazine. In 1980, together with Benoît Peeters, he created the series 'Cités Obscures', in which his love of architecture is magnificently visible.

Les Cités obscures

Les Cités obscures (literally The Obscure Cities, but initially published in English as Cities of the Fantastic) is a graphic novel series set on a Counter-Earth, started by the Belgian comics artist François Schuiten and his friend, writer Benoît Peeters in the early 1980s. In this fictional world, humans live in independent city-states, each of which has developed a distinct civilization, each characterized by a distinctive architectural style.

The Official series

The stories of the cités obscures appear in a series of graphic novels and related books, published by Casterman. Most of them remain unpublished in English. The books published in French so far are:

The Creators of Les Cités obscures

Francois Schuiten and Benoit Peeters met in 1968 as 12-year old classmates, Peeters’ parents having moved to Belgium when he was two. During their pre-college days they worked together on the school newspaper. After graduating from secondary school, Peeters enrolled in the Sorbonne, and Schuiten entered the Saint-Luc Institute in Brussels. They must have begun collaborating in their mid-twenties on the first volume of Obscure Cities, which was published in 1983, when they would have been 26 or 27.

François Schuiten, the artist

Schuiten is a Belgian comic book artist, born in 1956 in Brussels. His father and mother were both architects. Schuiten published his first comic at the age of sixteen, consisting of 5 black and white pages in the Franco-Belgian comics magazine Pilote; four years later he was published in the more experimental magazine Métal Hurlant.

Schuiten is best known for his illustrations of the Obscure Cities graphic novels. His love of architecture is apparent in these novels, and has been instrumental in forming one of the key creative elements of the fantasy world.

Every story focuses on one city or building, and further explores a world where architects, urbanists, and ultimately "urbatects", are the leading powers and architecture is the driving force behind society. Styles explored in the series include stalinistic and fascist architecture in La Fièvre d'Urbicande, skyscrapers in Brüsel, but also the gothic cathedrals in La Tour. This fascination with architecture and the possible and impossible cities it can generate is further explored in The Gates of the Possible, a weekly series Schuiten created for the newspapers Le Soir and De Morgen in 2005.

Benoît Peeters, the writer

Benoît Peeters is a comics writer, novelist, and critic. After a degree in Philosophy at the Sorbonne, he prepared his Master’s at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales under the direction of Roland Barthes. He has published over sixty works on a wide variety of subjects. However, like Schuiten, he is best known for the stories in the Obscure Cities series. The Book

Alaxis Press has made a large (in. 11.6x9.3/cm. 29.5x23.6), very high quality edition of The Leaning Girl. Both covers can be unfolded to twice the width of the book, producing extra-wide front and back illustrations together with additional features. The front cover (unfolded) shows brief biographies of Schuiten and Peeters, while the back one lists additional volumes forthcoming and two web sites: the obscure cities site and an incredible encyclopedic site of the Obscure Cities world.

Facing the title page is a large color drawing by Schuiten of Jules Verne (who has a small role in the story). Peeters has added a 2013 Introduction to the book, and a two page essay, Welcome to the Obscure Cities, has been contributed by Karen Green, the Graphic Novels Librarian of Columbia University.

The story starts with four facing-page color illustration/text renditions of four dreams. The dream descriptions are written by the book’s protagonist, Mary von Rathen, since they were her dreams as a young girl.

The story, and my reaction

One aspect of the story of the Leaning Girl was spoiled a little bit for me. On several occasions, before starting to read the novel, I had picked it up and looked at a page here and there. One time, unfortunately, I read a page that let the cat out of the bag. Or so I thought, anyway. What I didn’t realize was that the cat was only one of a small litter; that the story had more than one thread, and levels beyond levels of emotion and artistic creativity. So as it turned out, there was much more to enjoy beyond the small kitten that got away.

One unusual aspect of this graphic novel was that it soon became apparent that more than one story was being told. But even more unusual was the way one of these other stories was illustrated. It did not consist of drawings by Schuiten, but of photographs! These B&W photos were taken by Marie-Francoise Plissart, a Belgian photographer and filmmaker and one-time companion of Benoit Peeters.

Martin Vaughn-James

Vaughn-James was a British born Canadian who was one of the first graphic novelists in the 1970s, even before the term had been invented. In 1975 he produced an avant-garde classic called The Cage. There’s a magnificent description of this leading edge creation in a Globe and Mail article. I’d like to quote some of it, but as I scanned it there was no place to stop quoting. Well, apart from this totally unrelated thread winding through the story of Mary the Leaning Girl guess what - it's not unrelated at all - far, far from it ... , what did I get out of this book?

As a graphic novel it is high art, no doubt about it. The drawing is magnificent, especially several full page illustrations depicting towering buildings, sculptures, gargoyles, and … oh yes, people too, small as they often appear amidst the architectural (and sometimes mechanistic) marvels. And the intricate way that the story winds toward a climax of fantasy and emotion is very moving. The last forty or fifty pages of the novel were, to me, totally unexpected, level upon level of twists and turns that left me choked with emotion.

As hinted at by Jules Verne, in his big scene

we are all privileged to travel between worlds, some worlds which we are born into, and others which we make ourselves - through art, or writing, or even technology – which provide us with ready-made transport to explore their wonders. All we need do is close our eyes and allow ourselves to lean into the visions of those worlds which we’ve created, and there we are!

تصورش رو بکن دنیایی که توش هیچ‌چیز سر جای خودش نیست. ساختمونا کج شدن، پرسپکتیوها، نور و سایه‌ها دارن یه چیز عجیبی رو توی دل خودشون پنهون می‌کنن. همه محیط اطراف یه شکل عجیب غیرواقعی داره و تو تنها آدمی هستی که این محیط براش بیگانه‌ست و همه دارن عادی زندگی میکنن. اما یدفعه متوجه میشی که اوپس! این تو هستی که به سمت چپ خودت کج شدی و تنها آدم غیرعادی و تنها چیز عجیب این محیط خودتی.
  اینجا دنیای The Leaning Girl عه، یکی از عجیب‌ترین، زیباترین و بصری‌ترین کمیک‌هایی که توی عمرت می‌خونی و تصویرگری هایی داره که واقعیت رو به چالش می‌کشه.
این کتاب یه چیزیه بین یه داستان کلاسیک، یه تجربه‌ی بصری سورئال، و یه سفر عمیق توی هنر و معماری. این جلد، برعکس بعضی از قسمت‌های دیگه که بیشتر درباره‌ی شهرها، معماری و جامعه‌شناسی حرف می‌زنن، خیلی شخصی‌تر و روان‌شناختی‌تره. این کتاب از دریچه‌ی زندگی دختری روایت می‌شه که توی دنیایی پر از تفاوت و عدم‌تعادل گیر افتاده و سعی داره بفهمه واقعاً کیه و جاش کجاست.

دختر داستان کیه؟
ماجرای این کتاب درباره‌ ماری فون راتن سیزده ساله، یه دختر نوجوان از دنیای شهرهای عجیبه که موق�� بازدید از یه ترن‌هوایی یه مشکل عجیب  براش بوجود میاد و برای همیشه به سمت چپ خم می‌شه، انگار یه نیروی نامرئی داره اونو به اون سمت می‌کشونه! این موضوع فقط یه مشکل جسمی نیست، بلکه یه جورایی استعاره از وضعیت ذهنی، احساسی و اجتماعی ماری هم هست.
والدینش که از این وضعیت خجالت می‌کشن، اونو می‌فرستن یه مدرسه‌ی شبانه‌روزی تا شاید درست بشه. ولی خب، این مدرسه هیچی جز یه جای بسته و سرکوبگر نیست که سعی داره هر چیزی که با بقیه فرق داره رو نابود کنه. اینجا هیچ‌کس به تفاوت‌های ماری اهمیتی نمی‌ده، بلکه همه فقط می‌خوان اونم مثل بقیه باشه! بعد از کلی فشار روانی و حس تنهایی، ماری تصمیم می‌گیره از اونجا فرار کنه.
توی مسیرش، به یه دانشمند مرموز به اسم اکسل واپندورف برمی‌خوره. این آدم یه علاقه‌ی خاصی به جهان‌های موازی و نیروهای نامرئی‌ای که دنیاها رو به هم وصل می‌کنن داره. بعد از کلی بررسی، اکسل می‌فهمه که مشکل ماری فقط یه چیز فیزیکی نیست، بلکه اون به‌خاطر یه ناهماهنگی بین جهان‌های موازی داره کج می‌شه. به زبان ساده، ماری یه جورایی از یه دنیای دیگه به این دنیا کشیده شده و تعادلش به هم خورده.
اکسل راهی پیدا می‌کنه تا ماری رو به دنیای ما (یعنی زمین) بیاره. اینجا، ماری با یه مرد  هنرمند به اسم آگوستین دسومبرس آشنا می‌شه که از دنیای شلوغ خودش فرار کرده وبه ساختمانی خالی در حومه فرانسه پناه آورده. این هنرمند از وقتی به این خونه اومده، با یجور الهام غیرارادی شروع به نقاشی دیواری از کره های عجیب و غریب می کنه و نگران عقل خودشو از دست بده. اما کتشافات ماری و واپندورف آن‌ها را در مسیر برخورد با دسومبرس قرار می‌ده و یجورایی تلفیقی از جهان های موازی اتفاق میفته که به اون گوی های نقاشی شده ربط داره. و در نهایت... بله ماری به شهر خودش برمی‌گرده و با هویت خودش کنار میاد.

از نظر معماری
اگه عاشق جزئیات تصویری باشی، محاله بتونی از کنار معماری این کمیک، ساده بگذری. دو دنیای اصلی توی داستان هست که هر کدوم معماری خاص خودشونو دارن
دنیای شهرهای عجیب که یه ترکیب از معماری گوتیک، آرت دکو و یه جور آینده‌ عجیب و علمی‌تخیلیه. ساختمونا بلند، پر از جزئیات و در عین حال غیرممکن به نظر میان. این دنیا یه حس سنگینی داره، انگار که هر لحظه ممکنه بریزه رو سرت.
دنیای واقعی (زمین) که در مقایسه با اون یکی دنیا، اینجا انگار همه‌چی منطقی‌تره. خیابون‌ها، ساختمونا، نورپردازی، همه مثل چیزایی که تو زندگی واقعی می‌بینیم طراحی شدن، ولی اسویتن اینجا و اونجا با یه سری المان‌های تصویری بهمون نشون می‌ده که این دنیا هم بی‌نقص نیست.

از نظر زاویه‌ها و پرسپکتیو
یکی از خفن‌ترین ویژگی‌های تصویری این کتاب، بازی با زاویه‌هاست. یه وقتایی حس می‌کنی که صفحه‌ها دارن از زیر نگاهت لیز می‌خورن، چون پرسپکتیو توی طراحی کادرها همیشه هم استاندارد نیست. اسویتن این کارو کاملاً هوشمندانه انجام داده؛ اینجوری که توی جاهایی که ماری(دختر کج) داره از فشارهای محیطی رنج می‌بره، فریم‌ها کج می‌شن، ساختمونا انگار دارن روی سرش می‌افتن و وقتی که سعی می‌کنه صاف بایسته، انگار دنیا نمی‌خواد بپذیره، پس همه‌چی به‌نظر میاد که به یه سمت خم شده.
توی دنیای واقعی، زاویه‌ها طبیعی‌تر و متعادل‌ترن، اما هنوز همون حس ناپایداری وجود داره.

از نظر نورپردازی و رنگ‌ها
شاهد یه بازی بی‌نقص بین تاریکی و روشنایی هستیم. تو این کتاب، نور فقط یه عنصر تزئینی نیست؛ انگارخودش یه جورایی شخصیت داره. مثلا توی مدرسه‌ی شبانه‌روزی، سایه‌های تیره و فضاهای بسته باعث می‌شه حس کنی ماری داره خفه می‌شه. وقتی هم توی دنیای شهرهای عجیب هستی، نور از زوایای عجیب میاد، که نشون می‌ده این دنیا قوانین خاص خودش رو داره. اما توی زمین، نور طبیعی‌تره، ولی تضادهایی که ایجاد شده هنوز نشون می‌ده که ماری یه جورایی به این دنیا تعلق نداره.

از نطر شخصیت‌پردازی تصویری
طراحی‌های کتاب احساسات رو فریاد می‌زنن. اگه فقط متن داستان رو بخونی و به تصاویر دقت نکنی، نصف لذت این کمیکو از دست می‌دی. شخصیت‌ها طوری طراحی شدن که از روی ظاهرشون می‌تونی حسشون رو بفهمی. مثلا توی اول داستان، ماری کاملاً صاف ایستاده‌ست، ولی کم‌کم با پیش رفتن داستان، بدنش تغییر می‌کنه. فرم چهره‌اش، نحوه‌ی ایستادنش، همه نشون‌دهنده‌ی حال درونیشه. بقیه‌ی شخصیت‌ها مثلاً مدیر مدرسه و آدمای دنیای شهرهای عجیب، زوایای تیز و سختی توی طراحی چهره‌شون دارن، که نشون می‌ده چقدر سرد و سختگیرن. در مقابل، آدمای دنیای واقعی یعنی زمین، نرم‌تر و طبیعی‌تر طراحی شدن.

پسسس اگه دنبال یه کمیک معمولی‌ای که فقط چند ساعت سرگرمت کنه، این کتاب شاید گزینه‌ مناسبی نباشه. ولی اگه می‌خوای یه چیزی بخونی که مغزتو به چالش بکشه، توی جزئیاتش غرق بشی، هر صفحه‌اش رو چند بار ببینی و هی چیزای جدید کشف کنی، The Leaning Girl یه شاهکاره!

François Schuiten returns to gloriously moody black-and-white hatchwork for this magnificent eighth volume of the Cités obscures series (depending on how you count them), which fleshes out some old characters and further explores the links between the Obscure world and our own. It's a real treat, with at its heart a beautiful, poetic exploration of being different – here exemplified by our young hero Mary von Rathen, who is tilted forty-five degrees into the diagonal.



Mary's story hits many of the familiar tropes of such narratives – she is shunned by her family, tyrannised at boarding-school, exploited by a travelling circus, prodded at by scientists – but in the skilful hands of Schuiten and Peeters nothing feels formulaic, and once again they seem to keep finding new metaphorical ways to tell us old truths. Mary's story is interwoven with two others – the efforts of famous Obscure scientist Axel Wappendorf (who has featured tangentially in several previous books) to establish the presence of a nearby but undiscovered ‘dark’ planet; and, most intriguingly, a subplot set in our own world, about a painter working in France's Aubrac plateau at the end of the nineteenth century.

Working out how these stories come together is a lot of fun, especially given the different ways Schuiten chooses to illustrate them. The real-world sections are presented in a sort of noirish photocomic style which makes use of black-and-white photography from collaborator Marie-Françoise Plissart – though, as we soon see, no one medium or story is truly isolated from any of the others.



This particular tale began life as a children's book, Mary la penchée, which is now included as an appendix to modern editions of volume five, La Route d'Armilia et autres légendes du monde obscur. It's quite fascinating to see how much deeper and richer that initial idea has become as the authors have fleshed it out into a full-sized album. This is the sort of book they could not have produced earlier – it shows a total confidence in their storytelling and in their universe which allows them to get unexpectedly ambitious. And for the first time reviewing these incredible books, I can have some hope that plenty of readers will be able to track it down, since this one exists in an English translation courtesy of publisher Alaxis Press, who are pledging to translate the whole lot and for some reason decided to start with volume eight.

Certainly it makes an appealing entry point, exploring as it does most of the main themes of the series (although the primary one – architecture – is notably absent here). For longer-term readers, this volume has all the usual sly references to earlier books and hints of things to come, and a metaphysics of how the Obscure world is related to our own now seems tantalisingly within reach. Schuiten's artwork is once again dream-inducingly dense and detailed; but while his settings continue to dwarf his characters, this time there is a very touching human story to balance the epic monumentalism of the draughtsmanship.



This is probably the best single volume since La fièvre d'Urbicande, and the associated mythology is only getting richer and more productive with every book. A wonderful piece of work, and one that you can't imagine could exist in any other medium.

باید توجه داشت که این جلد از مجموعه، بیشترین تکیه بر تصویر رُ داره و داستان پیترز بیشتر کاربرد یک نقشه راه و الگو جهت بسط "مفهوم مورد بحث" رُ داشته. کَما اینکه علاوه بر فرانسوا شوییتِن، Marie-Françoise Plissart هم در خلق تصاویر این مجموعه همکاری داشته.

هر کدوم از جلدهای مجموعه The Obscure Cities به پرداخت و بررسی یک "مفهوم" مشترک، یک ایده قابل بسط، می‌پردازه و عموماً می‌شه در لابه‌لای تصاویر و کلمات، یک استعاره بدیع و چشم نواز رُ جستجو کرد.
در The Leaning Girl، این مایل بودن ۴۵ درجه‌ای مِری مثل یه عقربه، مثل یه نشانک، که نمی‌دونه بین دو تا درجه کدومو انتخاب و رکوع کنه، هم نشون دهنده سردرگُمی و تعلیقش هست در دنیایی که داستان توش اتفاق میافته، هم سردرگمیِ انتخاب بین "رضایت فردی" و "رضایت جمعی".
و این منجر به انزاوی مری و خلق درام در داستان میشه.
متاسفانه داستان پیترز اون قدرت کافی رُ نداشته که این سردرگمی، در "احساسات و جزییات رفتاری مری" نشون داده بشه.

امّا امّا امّا،
تصویرگری شوییتن در این جلد شاهکاره و این کلمه‌ایه که همیشه با خساست خرجش میکنم. تک‌تک پنل‌های این جلد چنان سرشار از جزییات بلندپروازانه ست که گاهی باور نمی‌کردم از میان صفحات یک رمان گرافیکی افتخار تجربه کردنشونو داشتم و نه از پشت شیشه‌های موزه.

معماری که همیشه در این مجموعه به عنوان اِلمانی برای انتقال مفاهیم استفاده می‌شده، در این جلد هم حضور پر معنایی داره اما کمرنگ‌تر از جلدهای قبلی، مخصوصا جلد اول و سوم. در اینجا ساختمان‌ها به طرزی اغراق‌آمیز و بدون درنظر گرفتن perspective distortion، راست راست سر به فلک می‌کشن و حجم این عظمت باعث می‌شه انسان‌های زیر پاهای این سازه‌ها، کوچک و شکستنی به نظر بیان.
به علاوه شوییتن از موتیف "کج بودن" هم غافل نبوده و در لوله توپ، گاندولییر و ویرانه‌های تمدن‌های فراموش‌شده ازش استفاده می‌کنه.

در کنار تصویرگری شوییتن که دنیای "واقعی" داستان رُ با "نقاشی" خلق کرده، ما چپترهایی پرالتهاب و وهم‌آلود داریم که در عالم خیالِ داستانی سپری می‌شن و این چپترها حاصل "عکاسی" ماری فرانسوآ-پلیسار هستن‌‌.
پلیسار از تجربه کارش با ژاک‌ دریدا در خلق عکس-داستانِ مدون استفاده کرده و همون تصاویرِ سیاه و سفیدِ کم کُنتراستِ کتاب Rights of Inspection رُ اینجا هم تکرار کرده.
فرانسوا-پلیسار اما این بار در چیدمان عکس‌ها از سیلووِت‌ هم در بعضی پنل‌ها استفاده می‌کنه تا "ناترازی" این قسمت از دنیای خیالی رُ "پررنگ‌تر" کنه.

این دیدگاه بدیع و استفاده خالقین از ابزارهای تصویری در تعریف خلاقه‌ی "واقعیت" (نقاشی) و "خیال" (عکس) که موجب سردرگمیِ عمدی مخاطب می‌شه، هم‌راستا ست با کنکاش و سردرگمی مِری برای یافت واقعیتِ وجودی خودش؛
کما اینکه در چپترهای پایانی، این هم‌آمیزیِ خیال و واقعیت (عکس‌های نقاشی‌شده‌ی فصل ماقبل آخر)، این پذیرش هر دو سوی نمودار، همون آرک شخصیتی مری هستن که باعث توازنِ شخصیت در واقعیت، در استعاره و در ناخودآگاه مری می‌شن.

احتمالا بهترین جلد از این مجموعه بود تا اینجا، هرچند همیشه دارم اینو با هر جلد تازه تکرار

Ce livre entrelace et développe non seulement trois récits convergents — Mary, Wappendorf et Desombres —, mais aussi différentes idées déjà présentes dans d’autres albums de la série des Cités obscures : l’histoire d’une jeune fille dont l’axe de gravité est mystérieusement déplacé prend évidemment sa source dans le court récit de Mary la penchée (publié à la fin de La Route d'Armilia) - mais le thème de l’obliquité était en germe dans La fièvre d'Urbicande, où le réseau partait d’une orientation “penchée” par rapport aux lignes orthogonales de l’urbanisation.

D’autres leitmotive réapparaissent, de manière plus subtile : le personnage du scientifique ou de l’artiste obsessionnel et isolé (Urbicande, La Tour, L'Archiviste) ; le voyage initiatique (Armilia) ; les sphères souterraines (L'Echo des cités) ; la communication entre les univers (L'Archiviste) ; l’hommage à Jules Vernes (L'Echo des cités encore)… Il en va de même des éléments stylistiques : l’absence de couleur (Brüsel) et l’alternance entre dessins et photographies (L'Echo toujours), qui se mêlent finalement dans la main même de l’artiste.

Cet album marque donc un point de confluence, de mise en cohérence, entre les images développées auparavant dans la série. Le thème de l’architecture, si prégnant dans les premiers albums, semble curieusement passé au second plan, mais le personnage de Mary / Madame Von Rathen est une vraie réussite et apporte une touche de vulnérabilité et d’humanité qui, pour le coup, est assez neuve sous la plume de Schuiten et Peeters.

Проте насправді тут нема жодної складності, а навпаки, автори уже чітко й структуровано передають свою ідею. До слова, Бенуа Петерс - філософ, дослідник коміксів і творчості Жака Дерріда, але тут лише присутній легкий подих деконструкції (у контексті мультимедійності), яка виглядає виправдано.

Загалом, концепт просто геніальний: одного разу після відвідання атракціону дівчина Марі втрачає рівновагу, нахилаючись без своєї волі в один бік. Щоб вона не робила - над нею не працюють закони гравітації. Усе це дратує її однолітків і родичів, а дівчина стає вигнанцем. Паралельно у цьому ж світі астрономи намагаються віднайти питання про життя на невідомій зірці, принагідно майструючи космічний корабель. Врешті, далі йде третя історія, вже у форматі послідовних фотокарток, а саме про художника, який ніяк не може знайти вихід із творчої кризи.

Усе це грамотно збалансовано й згодом неодмінно з'єднається в одній точці. Читається цікаво, а дивиться - ще краще. Малюнок тут архітектурний, комплексний, створюючи відчуття футуристичності, романтизму й метафізики. Цей атмосферний графічний роман варто читати спокійно, насолоджуючись кожним кадром, ракурсом, реплікою. А потім знову повернутися до нього через декілька років.

La historia se divide en tres líneas argumentales. Por un lado, tenemos a Mary, una niña que durante una visita junto a su familia a la feria de Alaxis, sufre un extraño cambio a raíz de un eclipse, que la obliga a vivir inclinada. Este misterio se irá desvelando durante la narración. Por otro lado, está el profesor Wappendorf, que estudiará la procedencia del extraño eclipse, creyendo que es debido a un astro oculto. Y por último, está el pintor Agustin Desombres, que frustrado ante la crítica, viaja sin rumbo, hallando al fin una mansión en medio de la nada donde encontrar la inspiración. Esta última parte está narrada a partir de fotografías, como si de una fotonovela se tratase.

‘Las ciudades oscuras: La chica inclinada’ (Les cités obscures. L’enfant penchée, 1996), de François Schuiten y Benoît Peeters, es un extraordinario cómic, con una estupenda historia y unos dibujos excelentes, donde prima la arquitectura. Sin duda es un cómic para ver, leer, y releer.

Apesar do impressionante universo mágico criado - com cidades utópicas imponentes, desenhadas a traço fino e preciso - o argumento não conseguiu cativar-me, ainda que inicialmente tenha conseguido prender a minha a atenção (uma jovem mulher cujo corpo se torna inesperadamente inclinado, como se passasse a estar sob uma força gravitacional diferente da habitual).

A avaliação que aqui deixo é muito por conta do aspecto visual da obra. Gostei também da fusão entre desenho e fotografia (um estilo que terá, certamente, uma denominação que desconheço) usada na representação de dois mundos distintos. No entanto, a narrativa pareceu-me demasiado etérea e no fim, perde-se o sentido da história (principalmente na parte em que a jovem desenvolve uma paixão assolapada por um homem bastante mais velho, com quem nunca tivera qualquer contacto). Não me convenceu.

Ogarnięcie kontekstów, wątków i konotacji związanych z tą serią to prawdziwe wyzwanie. "Pochyłe dziecko" odwołuje się zarówno do postaci istniejącego w XIX w. artysty Augustina Desombres'a jak i wystawy autorów, którą nazwali "Le Musée des Ombres". To kolejna niezwykła historia, tym razem na granicy światów. Część, w której tradycyjny komiks miesza się sekwencjami kadrów w formie fotografii, a dodatkowo śledzimy trzy różne rzeczywistości, zbliżające się do siebie coraz bardziej im bliżej końca fabuły. Graficznie jest znów pięknie, klasycznie, symetrycznie i z obłędną ilością szczegółów. Fabuła dotycząca trójki odmieńców jest nawet bardziej niż w poprzednio niejednoznaczna i zależna od interpretacyjnych zdolności czytelnika. Po trzech częściach jestem niezmiennie zauroczony cyklem.

After a freak accident, thirteen year-old Mary Von Rathen begins to lean at a 45 degree angle. After nothing fixes her affliction, her selfish mother and hen-pecked father send her away to a private school. Shortly after, Mary runs away and quite literally joins the circus where she remains for several years, performing her amazing leaning girl act. A newspaper editor tells her of a scientist, Axel Wappendorf, who is planning on a journey to a planet that might unlock the secret behind Mary’s trouble. Interspersed within Mary’s tale, is the story of fine artist Augustin Desombres, who escapes from his busy world and buys an empty building on the French countryside. He begins painting murals of strange globes and worries about his sanity. Mary’s and Wappendorf’s explorations bring them into a collision course with Desombres and hopefully the answers that Mary’s seeks.

Part of the legendary Obscure Cities sequence, this extraordinary French graphic novel serves as an ideal introduction to the long running series produced by writer Peeters and artist Schuiten. Expertly employing the tropes of 19th century science fiction, the duo’s creation achieves the unique duality of both very familiar and very different. Schuiten’s exquisite line work pairs perfectly with Peeters’ prose in creating the mythical worlds, outlandish ideas, and commonplace people. Further enhancing the work’s uniqueness is the Fumetti style of Desombres’ story as envisioned by the black & white photography of Plissart. The riveting, beautiful Leaning Girl fascinates, while providing one of the best reading experiences of the year.

My first visit to the French series The Obscure Cities, but hopefully not my last. The story of Mary, the mysteriously leaning girl, mixes architectural wonders, steampunk tech, Jules Verne adventure, and unexpected metaphysics. The art alternates between gorgeous color paintings, etched sequences worthy of Durer, and the most seamless use of photography in comics I've seen. Not coincidentally, those photo sequences feature Martin Vaughn James, author of the Nouveau Roman graphic novel The Cage.

I suspect most of my Goodreads friends would enjoy this smart Victorian sci-fi story. Conceptual and affecting, it's that rarest thing: genuinely charming.

I'm upping the rating because the production of this volume is remarkable - oversize, immaculately printed, and ravishing. If it does well, more volumes from the Obscure Cities series (now at 16 volumes) will be translated and published in the U.S. So it's a fine thing to support with yr hard earned lucre.

I think something was lost in translation, here, or I didn't have enough context to fully appreciate this book. I thought the initial concept was great. But the third act. Bleh. Artist draws spheres on a wall and slips through to another time. Leaning Girl and Scientist travel through some time space gap. Leaning Girl leaves Scientist to go exploring and runs into the artist who created the spheres. The artist is some middle aged very self indulgent whiner. Leaning Girl (a teenager) and this guy bang and she's suddenly entranced by him and claims she has been thinking of him the whole time. Maybe that happened in earlier books or something? Was totally a surprise in this one. Then freaking Jules Verne shows up to explain the situation and tie up loose ends. Then they get transported back to reality.
Overall...not my fave.

And probably the only time I've seen photography work when used in a comic book. I honestly can't think of a single time where I've seen photography comics look nice.

Ich habe keine Ahnung, was ich da gelesen habe. Es mag eine Meisterwerk der Comickunst der 90er-Jahre zu sein, aber meinen Geschmack hat es leider gar nicht getroffen.

Die im Science-Fiction-Gewand daherkommende Geschichte erinnerte in Teilen an Jules Verne (der am Ende sogar noch als Figur auftritt) und hat diverse skurrile Elemente, die in einem starken Schraffur-Stil gezeichnet wurde. Zusätzlich zu der Geschichte um das schräge Mädchen Mary gibt es eine zweite Handlung, die als Fotomontage über einen Künstler in einer Sinnkrise erzählt. Beide Handlung finden zwar am Ende zusammen, so wirklich überzeugen konnte mich das Gesamtwerk trotz seiner faszinierenden Machart und künstelrischem Anspruch dann leider nicht.

Schuiten and Peeters again deliver on a beautifully realized fantasy world by way of Jules Verne and Georges Méliès. There is less Piranesi here, although the architecture that is depicted is still exquisite, but the focus is rather on Mary von Rathen as a character and her alienation from the 'upright' world. There is a parallel photo-comic that intersperses her narrative about an artist (in our world?) who becomes obsessed with visions of the comic world, which all comes together in an exploration of the power of imagination to transport us to other worlds (which sounds really dumb when I write it but it works). If only there wasn't that weird age-gap and sexualization of a teenager!

«Aunque ya sé que eso me destruye, no puedo evitar releer esas pocas frases.»

The two introductions really over hyped this story: I was expecting an incredibly affecting, wild story that stuck with me, and instead got something that was... fine.

Mary, randomly, starts leaning one day, and is sent to boarding school when her parents are at their wit's end. Bullied and unhappy, Mary runs away and become the star attraction at a circus for five years. She meets up with a scientist (in the vein of Jules Verne) and discovers that she's leaning because her center of gravity has been aligned to a different planet/person.

Concurrently, there's a story told in (beautiful) photographs of an artist, drawn to an empty house and, eventually, to Mary. Mary and the artist are, of course, in love. And then he leaves her and she stops leaning and lives her life, always remembering him.

Beautiful and clear linework, but nothing too spectacular.

Abstract, precise, and wonderful in so many ways, The Leaning Girl graphic novel is an absolute necessity for artists, writers and fans of original, thoughtful graphic novel storytelling.

Structured as multiple stories that converge as a dream, Schuiten and Peeters take the reader on a journey through atmospheric wonders alongside characters you grow to understand intimately. Loneliness, displacement, cultural hegemony and finding one's own inspiration are themes sewn lovingly yet not overtly through the tapestry of panels that often stop your eye in its tracks.

The imagination attached to each scene and character justify every cent you will spent to buy this book. Already it is a jewel in my collection, and I cannot wait to lend it to those close to me.

It's sort of a given that anything by the team of Schuiten and Peeters is going to get 5 stars from me. Their imagination, depth, and quality of work puts them on a level above almost all other graphic novelists. This book is no exception. The art is superb. The layout and integration of design into the story is clever and original. I'm sure I'll reread it many times. In short, it's a story about growing up, but that's a shallow summary of a deep book.

The package is amazing. Super-high quality edition including a signature page and several pages of sketches. I'm very happy that I Kickstarted this book.

Ho hum. The art is pretty, the scenes fantastical, and the book itself well-made. But the plot is spurred forward by everyone constantly thinking that Mary is somehow leaning to get attention, despite the fact she's denying gravity. And the end is rather... well, the authors just sorta smashed the multiple plot lines together and told us to accept it, with the final pages resolving the major plot point by stating it had been resolved off-screen.

Experimental doesn't mean you can get away without a story.

Kurzreview: Die Macht der Imagination bringt Welten in Kontakt - selten habe ich ein so kraftvolles und dabei sehr subtil-zurückhaltendes Loblied auf die Macht der Kunst gesehen. Spannend in Idee wie auch Ausführung, mit der wunderbaren Kombination von Fotografie und Zeichnung. Jules Vernes Romane dienen als Inspiration bei Plot und Zeichnung: Die Landung der Rakete in einem unterirdischen See könnte direkt aus einem Kupferstich der frühen Ausgaben des französischen Visionärs stammen.
Sicherlich einer der besten Bände der Reihe.

Steampunk why do you exisssst.
What worth do you have in the grand scheme of thinggggssss.
This was nicely illustrated and had certain moments of quaint loveliness but generally, just, why?
Eh. the concepts were interesting, the narrative execution was on par and not too much more.
But to be a leaning girl -- this does seem a bit terrifying. That in itself was cool. An interesting concept, less than fully realized.

A triumph of style over story. The art work is exquisite. The story - well, it might be better served by cinema - there's a blending of Art and Reality and an interpenetration of Reality and Fantasy. Much of the book is composed of images that are striking but static- much like one of those volumes which attempt to tell the story of a film through frame images.
