Temporary Problems

Chris Carey’s Temporary Problems is many things.

It is a story of love found, lost and then found again and the vivid range of emotions humans inevitably endure riding the roller coaster called romance…exhilarating ups and sorrowful downs.

It is a travelogue of sorts, a delightfully descriptive narrative of Edinburgh and environs in Scotland…the clubs, the restaurants and, of course, the pubs.

But most of all, Temporary Problems is a novel of war. In ways usually reserved for ‘real’ wars of the past…the Civil War, World Wars I and II, Korea, even Vietnam…Carey captures the horror of Afghanistan, you know, the little war to which few others than those who fought there pay little attention.

The damage to body, mind and soul suffered by men and women in countless unnamed skirmishes in Helmand Provence is no less horrific than that experienced those who fought at Shiloh, The Ardennes, Guadalcanal, Inchon or Khe Sanh.

The author’s graphic descriptions of war are disturbing, but so too is war. More chilling is the aftermath of war as experienced by the book’s protagonist, John Fox. For Fox, like many who served, the war never ends.

Be it a helicopter crash, the drunken crowd at a rugby match or the sights seen and sounds heard in the pubs on Rose Street in Edinburgh, the author’s descriptive narratives and characters’ dialog are colorful and authentic.
Temporary Problems is an entertaining read with something for almost anyone.
