A story that is both deeply engaging and profoundly edifying.
Truthfully, I've been avoiding writing this review for weeks. Not because I didn't enjoy the book, but because I loved it so much that I wasn't sure I could do it justice. I've read it twice now, once as a beta reader and again as an advance reader. I also backed the author’s Kickstarter campaign for an illustrated edition and I cannot wait to receive my copy (which Daylin is illustrating herself)! And yes, I'll absolutely be eagerly reading it a third time when it arrives.
At its heart, this is an emotionally resonant story about sacrificial love, hope against impossible odds, and the beauty of life even amidst suffering.
The characters felt incredibly raw, transparent, and real. Their flaws and strengths making them distinct, believable, and deeply lovable characters. Their growth also felt natural and cohesive. The story deals with past wounds, grief, heartbreak, struggle, pain, and depression but Daylin handles those heavy themes with tremendous care by conveying the weight of those realities while balancing it out with hope and truth. That balance is one of this book's greatest strengths.
And then there's Daylin's writing. Her prose is absolutely beautiful. She can create vivid imagery while simultaneously conveying the emotional weight of a scene in just a few sentences. It's the kind of writing that makes reading other books difficult afterward. Even on my second read-through, scenes still struck a deep chord, choked me up, and had me furiously highlighting sentences or short passages. (I’ve never highlighted a fantasy book before people!)
Throw in star-crossed childhood sweethearts, a rift between dimensions, evil astral spirits, a corrupt sacrificial system, high stakes, magical abilities, a secret “rebel group”, Christian themes/allegory, a treehouse headquarters, and a giant lazy dino-cat companion, and you get a story that is both imaginative AND deeply meaningful.
I saw that the author said she “prays this story would help readers see the goodness and beauty of life, even amidst suffering.” Mission accomplished Amber,
the world needs more books like this one. A story that is both deeply engaging and profoundly edifying.
I received an eARC of this book, and this is my honest review.
