The Prodigy
Fifteen-year-old U.S. National Champion figure skater, Jackie Ellis, is among the favorites to win the World Championships in Boston. Her mother, Anne, a former Olympian, coached her daughter's inexplicable rise to the pinnacle of the sport. But Jackie's near-perfect performance comes to a devastating halt when she fails to execute a difficult jump and crashes to the ice, suffering a traumatic brain injury.
When the girl regains consciousness, she's confused and disoriented. Although her surroundings are vaguely familiar, she feels as if she’s stepped into a completely different era. Most unnerving of all, she doesn’t recognize the people who claim to be her parents.
The doctors can’t explain away her daughter’s sudden abilities to play piano and speak fluent Norwegian, skills Jackie never learned. As Anne begins to suspect that this girl may not be her daughter, she confronts the haunting echo of a legacy that still reverberates through the family's ancestral home.

After reading Mr. Stevens's historical novel, IDA, I became a die-hard fan of his work. I dove into THE PRODIGY with high expectations for a good read, but his story about an injured figure skater surpassed my expectations. It challenged me to be mindful of every detail; i.e. kept me engaged.
THE PRODIGY unfolds over decades, but as it admirably flip-flops between generations, Mr. Stevens weaves in backstory seamlessly. The story opens with a long-time Aspen resident who notices everything and knows the past history of a scary Victoria house.
Three strong female characters lead us down an enticing paranormal path yet ground the story with real heartache, and strength that not only sustains them, but heals them. Lyrical language builds slowly, but surely to a satisfying ending. Some examples: "the sail of Anne's mind," "a muted seed of hope," "the threads in the fabric of life," and a dose of fun - "tempted to spike it with Kahlua."
THE PRODIGY is a must read for any age!
