This was just a fun cozy spicy monster romance with an MMC all green flags and support and keeping the human safe in his realm and an FMC who finally allows her large personality to take up space. I loved the older FMC (she's 38), who's described as curvy and plump, is a POC with wild coily hair, and doesn't fit the normal love interest of the skinny perfect blond girl. And yet she's confident and fun and cares so much about everyone, even when she's thrown into a weird world where she is the enemy. The MMC is an older demon with a dad bod, and I am here for it. And he is absolutely enthralled with all her soft spots and rolls. She's in little d danger, it's mostly a cozy book with lower stakes, and big D energy. Don't think about it too hard because the worldbuilding isn't super crisp and why does everyone seem to speak English when the humans were the enemy of a centuries war and only the scholars and warriors should even have any human knowledge and interaction? Not important, that's not the point. The point is a nurse going for her MD in the human world gets thrown into the arms of a healer demon in their realm with no way to get back (nevermind the scholar who can cross the rift at will) and she just demands to go with him on rounds and help the demons and animals get better. I wanted a little more anguish with her new circumstances, maybe fighting with the choice to return or to stay, but nah that's not what we're here for. We're here for a good time, a happy romp through monster lands and regular "geriatric millennials" getting their happy story. A perfect palate cleanser when you've been reading lots of sad and heavy fantasy lately.

I BLOODY LOVED THIS ONE SO MUCH!!!! LET ME GO THROUGH THE RIFT, I HAVE NO SKILLS TO OFFER ASIDE FROM THE DESIRE TO BED A DEMON!!!

Honestly, this was a great time. Sloane is a nurse who is currently working on becoming an MD, and is actually going through it with douchecanoes. On a rare break, she tries to check on a cat, but instead falls through the rift and into the demon realm. DON'T WORRY THOUGH. She is found by Torik, a healer, a sexy dad-bod demon, and an absolute menace who makes a great first impression by tackling our girl to the ground... he tried.

Torik knows the cost of humans being discovered within the realm, and knows that he needs to keep Sloane safe if she is to stay alive. Luckily her medical skills from earth may prove useful as he attempts to heal the animals and demons alike who are suffering and need healing.

Torik's cabin has one bed, a gorgeous little glider companion, and an oven perfect for baking pies in. The forced proximity helps build this tension and pull between the two, especially as Torik learns hair care, and what breasts are all in the same time frame (he does later get to learn what a great joy kissing is). They both care so much and want to help the other with their struggles and past, even if they struggle to open up and face their emotions rather than locking them away. THANKFULLY spicy demon sex is perfect for building relationships, starting conversations, adjusting humans to a demon realm (I truly believe this last one) so the amount of smut and sexual exploration we get is an absolute great time. I'm talking chasing, tails, ridged peens, hot springs, JUST EVERYTHING A GAL NEEDS FOR A GOOD TIME.

I also loved seeing Sloane make friends and build a community simply by being kind, and not judging others even when they judge her. I cannot wait to see more of her settling into this realm because she is a real light and is truly wonderful. ALSO THAT ENDING???? I need that book asap just because I need to know more about you know who... Also I need to see Sloane and Audrey interact and be best friends.

I loved this one even more than the first, and I fear Evelyn is becoming an autobuy/read author for me because I am so obsessed with her world and characters. SHE ALSO DRAWS THE ART PEOPLE!!! THIS WOMAN DOES EVERYTHING. So I highly recommend giving this one a chance if you want a monster romance that delivers and is easy to dive into if you're new to the genre!!

The Magic We Learn and The Lives We Heal: A Wonderfully Immersive Monster Romance

It's remarkably difficult for a sequel to surpass an already excellent first book while still feeling both familiar and genuinely fresh. Healing the Demon manages exactly that. Rather than simply repeating what worked before, Evelyn Embers builds on every one of the series' strengths while making the world feel even more lived-in. Very few books impress me so consistently across every aspect, making this an exceptional read.

What stood out most was how differently this couple's story unfolds. Same dying demon realm, yet nothing about Sloane and Torik is formulaic. Their dynamic, the way they challenge each other as fellow medical professionals, and the path they take are completely their own. Even when Sloane struggles to accept her new reality more than the first heroine, her reactions remain believable rather than repetitive, allowing the story to progress without manufactured drama. That kind of fresh energy in a series is rare and so welcome.

Embers does something genuinely clever with her medical world-building. Patients describe their symptoms like real patients do, then Sloane translates them into authentic medical terminology. It never reads like research dropped onto the page, just an organic extension of how she communicates and applies her expertise.

That same authenticity carries into the Realm's magic. Magic and medicine never operate like independent systems because each strengthens the other until they become inseparable. I could actually imagine it existing in our own world, which is no small feat for a fantasy novel.

I also love how her heroines have practical expertise. Their professions aren't decorative; they fundamentally shape how problems are solved. That's a rare talent in fantasy, making the Realm feel grounded rather than merely invented.

Some of the most memorable prose comes from the quiet, observant moments. Imagery like nostril hairs crystallizing in the icy-cold or a face showing "gratitude stretched thin over despair" stayed with me. My favorite was hearing a foreign language as "a low, resonant sequence of sounds with a rhythm I can't parse," where consonants click and roll in unfamiliar ways. It perfectly captures that strange sensation of hearing a language your brain can't begin to decode. Embers' humor is just as sharp: Sloane eyeing Torik "like the last slice of pie at Thanksgiving" made me laugh out loud.

Reading the same intimate scene from both perspectives made chapters 10 and 11 a standout. That dual view deepens the vulnerability, while moments like Torik kneeling to meet Sloane at eye level convey the couple's dramatic size difference far more effectively than repeated height measurements ever could. As with the first book, the steam remains deeply character-driven, strengthening their relationship while complementing their maturity and emotional growth.

One choice I found incredibly refreshing was the blurb never advertises a "curvy heroine" or calls attention to the fact that Sloane is Black as a selling point. Instead, both are simply part of who she is. That understated respect for her characters' identities reflects an author confident in her storytelling, trusting readers to discover them as fully realized people, without needing to announce those aspects in advance.

The book even saves one of its strongest moments for the end: the closing postlude. Seeing how both couples are reshaping the Realm through the eyes of another character left me even more excited for the next installment. I can't wait to fall through the next Rift!

Healing the Demon is the kind of book that slips under your skin and stays there, wrapping you in equal parts warmth and heat until you forget the outside world for a while.

From the moment Sloane, an exhausted Boston ER nurse, tumbles into a dying, sunless realm and lands at the feet of Torik, a towering demon medic with sweeping wings, lethal horns, and the kind of rugged dad bod that somehow feels more comforting than intimidating, the story settles into a rhythm that feels both dangerous and deeply intimate.

What struck me most was how naturally the two of them clash and then soften around each other. Sloane is capable, stubborn, and unable to sit still while people need help, even when those people have claws and the world around her considers humans the enemy!

Torik is the classic solitary grump who has built his entire life around quiet competence and a pet lizard 🦎 for company, yet the moment he scoops her up, his protectiveness turns almost aching in its intensity.

Watching two people who have spent years taking care of everyone else slowly remember how to let someone take care of them was great to watch. Their arguments over medical protocols in his rustic clinic are sharp and funny, but the quieter moments, the careful way his clawed hands wash the grime from her curls, the way he pulls her against his broad chest in that single bed just to keep her warm, carry a tenderness that makes the spice land even harder when it arrives.

And the spice does arrive, fully and unapologetically. The author doesn’t shy away from the size difference or the unique accommodations of demon anatomy, and the heat between them builds with a delicious sense of inevitability rather than sudden convenience…. every charged glance and careful touch grows out of the forced proximity and the slow recognition that they are both lonely in the same bone deep way. The danger of discovery by other demons keeps the stakes real without overwhelming the cozy atmosphere of their little clinic sanctuary.

I closed the book feeling the same satisfied ache I get from the best comfort reads, the ones that manage to be both soft and scorching at once.

Sloane and Torik’s story is about two healers learning that they are allowed to need something for themselves, and that the person who can give it to them might just have horns and wings.

If you like your monster romance with genuine emotional healing, high heat, and the kind of protective caretaking that makes you sigh, this one delivers.

Evelyn Embers has done it again! Healing the Demon was such a fun read. The way she brings together cozy fantasy with spicy monster romance... so so good.

Healing the Demon follows two caregivers, our human FMC Sloane and our demon MMC Torik. Both healers in their own worlds who selflessly care for others to the point of not being able to remember what its like to take care of themselves or for someone to care for them. I loved how their romantic relationship developed. The feelings felt earned. It was satisfying seeing them unravel for each other and adjust to having someone care for them. I mean, if someone took care of all my needs while i was on my period, I would also fall for them despite the fact that hes a 7 foot demon. Just sayin. The way Sloane adapted to her new environment despite everything was such a testament to the caring person she is. And I cant forget mentioning Kara! Toriks pet that is basically a mix between a dragon, house cat and rowdy toddler. Seeing more of this demon realm being explored was exciting and I hope we get more!

Look, if dad-bod demons who fall for you first and a strong, smart FMC are your thing, then Healing the Demon is the book for you. Its the perfect blend of cozy fantasy in another realm but with sweet, freaky demons.

Healing the Demon is a cozy, high-heat monster fantasy. Sloane is a nurse in training who works at Boston's ER where she falls into a portal. She lands in the rift where she meets Torik, a demon who’s just trying to help his dying realm. Together they have to figure out what’s wrong with the realm, how to help the other demons and if they can save everything they care about all while falling in love.

I love how protective Torik is of Sloane right away, as soon as she falls into the rift and he finds her all he wants to do is make sure that she is safe. And all Sloane wants to do is help the Demons of this realm cause that's what she's good at that's wat she did back at home, so why wouldn't she help the demons here. Oh, cause demons HATE humans, or so they think they should, that's what the king wants them to believe since they've been fighting wars with the humans for centuries. But Torik has never really fallen for the propaganda after the first war that he fought in.

I really enjoyed this book; it was really sweet and I love how strong and confident Sloane is in herself even in a brand-new world that would try to kill her if she let it, but she doesn't, and Torik wouldn't let anything happen to her anyways. Also, I love a demon with a dad bod, I just really like that Torik doesn't look like all the other male leads who are ripped with a 10 pack, and Kara is so cute and sweet I really love her. The journey they have to go on together to get to know each other and fall in love is just really sweet and I love them so much. I can't wait for the next book in this series to come out. I need to know what happens to the realm next.

Another brilliant book from Evelyn Embers.

Sloane is an overworked ER nurse. Popping out for a break during her shift; she spies a purple light down an alley. Not one to shy away, Sloane goes hunting for the source of the light. But what she doesn’t bank on is falling through The Rift, landing in a demon realm that’s slowly dying, & having a massive purple demon chase her!

Torik is on a scavenging trip to stock his dwindling medicinal herbs. Coming across a human was not on the cards for the day. When Sloane spots him & starts running, he gives chase knowing if anyone discovered her she would be killed.

After getting Sloane back to his cottage, Torik becomes quietly fascinated with her. She’s wary of the 7ft demon, but her curiosity wins out - especially when he helps her detangle her hair!

As the days go on, the pair find themselves more & more drawn to each other, so when Sloane grabs the demon by the horns & asks her to chase her & claim her, Torik is unable to deny his human female anything. But their coming together appears to have magical consequences, as the village around them begins to show life once again.

Can Torik keep his mate safe? Can they figure out why their mating has made the land prosper? I suggest you download to find out!

I loved it!!!! This is a pure vibes book!!!! It was very fast paced and I loved how we get into it right away. No beating around the bush. She gets sucked up into the demon guy’s world looking like a damn beacon and HE pretty much saves her from herself-she being sassy and dramatic and crazy. She literally sleeps in his bed like nothing is happening THAT SAME DAY because she thinks she’ll wake up and it was a dream. Hahaha not!!!!
Anyways he hides her cause she’s human, and they are both healers so immediately they connect, GUESSSS WHATTT…. She gets damn period and he acting like she’s dying and trying to heal her! So cute. And then she’s ovulating…. (I was anxiously waiting for that) and stuff happens and then some magic happens and people find out about her… (insert drama) she gets kidnapped …HE LOSES IT!!! I loved this part! Anyways she befriend the kidnapper… not goons spoil the ending. BUTTTTT WE A PROLOGUE and one of the side characters is gonna get his own human… yay!!!! And the king (evil vibes) idk I feel like he will end up with his own human!!!! I CANT WAIT FOR THAT!!!! So i obviously liked the book ❤️

I was so excited to be gifted a copy of Healing The Demon early and what a book it is ……here are my honest thoughts

When you start to read an Evelyn Embers book…you’re transported into that world !! or for Healing the Demon transported into that realm, you can soon feel the sensations of it all around like your there the more you read, you can imagine the crunch of leaves under foot the purple sky, close your eyes imagine that 7 demon!!!
I highly recommend reading !!

How Evelyn has highlighted real life issues that are relevant right now is brilliant!! Especially within the medical field a massive thank you !!

Sloane’s character in the book is wonderful so on point for so many women she really does touch base , especially with curly hsir issues, period issues, they’re real and Evelyn has absolutely nailed that

The characters Sloane and Torik the banter between them will make you laugh out loud at times, other times you might want to cry a little, keep tissues handy.

Torik is captivated by Sloane, he draws her a bath, he tends to her when she has her period, he washes her hair (swoon) his heart is cracking open each day little by little

Sloane can’t help but notice him who can’t he’s 7 feet tall and purple with lots of muscles ….and horns yikes smooth looking horns hhhmm who also wears what resembles a kilt has leathery wings which she’s itching to run her fingers over just a little touch

Torik is a healer in the realm treating sick demons and animals which is perfect because Sloane is a human healer in her world, he takes her with him on his rounds dressed in a disguise, they work together, teaching each other new things

Kara the little pet lizard who thinks she’s a dragon is adorable with her clicks and trills (I’d love a Kara )

It was good to see previous characters from the other book mentioned also new ones too

The spice and intimacy is really yummy, not over the top just perfect, hence the reason I haven’t gone into to much make your own mind up 😊

4.25 stars. This story is dual POV, well written, and a fast-paced, sweet and steamy, age gap, portal, fantasy romance between Sloane, the female human doctor-in-training lead feeling wrathful at systemic racism in her hospital emergency department, and Torik, the male demon healer lead struggling to keep his patients alive in a dying world. I enjoyed Sloane’s vocational focus and her determination to provide whatever healing help she could wherever she was. I empathised with both characters’ historical pain and Torik’s trauma, and enjoyed seeing the personal development. I enjoyed Torik’s fascination with Sloane and his protective efforts on her behalf. I enjoyed Kara, Torik’s “pest control” companion animal and laughed at her antics. I enjoyed the steamy intimate scenes. I enjoyed the balance between their skills and capabilities. I enjoyed the health their partnership brought to their corner of the world, and the supportive neighbours/patients who assisted as necessary. I enjoyed the set up for future stories and appreciate the non-romance plot unravelling in the background.

So I was lucky enough to get this book early and I am so glad I did! I loved this book and if anyone asked me about a romantasy book this would be the one I would introduce them to.
The world building Embers accomplishes here is incredible. The details are well-written and to not spoil anything but you can FEEL the devastation in the world she describes.
Her characters have amazing growth throughout the story and I found a relationship to them so quickly. Especially as a female in the medical field. It wasn't graphic or anything so if you are worried about being squeamish on small things be rest assured you won't be here.
I did believe that Sloane's opinion and desires for Torik she was fighting in the beginning very suddenly changed. It felt a little bit rushed to me and almost like I missed an inner monologue somewhere where she talked herself into changing her mind.
But it didn't detract from the story and only made it better in the end.
I thought the spicy level was about a 3/5. It contributed to the storyline and made their relationship better in my opinion. All together a great read!

I read both the first book the day she reached out. And the second book i filed out the arc sheet and waited! I was super nervous cause I really loved the first book and yeah I know she reached out so big chance I was gonna get it but still was nervous.

I really loved the start of this book. A over worked nurse, speaking out and helping legit. Her speaking up at that doctor, and her co worker friend checking up on her urgh chefs kiss.

When her co worker is worried about a stray I knew she was gonna go look for it.
But what threw me off guard was the portal. I was wondering how her portal was gonna go.

And her falling in and not falling apart is really saying something cause id cry and stay by a tree if that was me.

I absolutely love the demon MMC in this book. The way hes also a healer and stressed over this blight.

Watching them trust, and grow into love is so magical.

Him also having her rest and also taking care of her omg.

And her helping him and healing something inside of him.

Healing the Demon by Evelyn Embers is a captivating monster romance that balances tenderness, emotional healing, and undeniable chemistry. I loved the dynamic between the main characters—their relationship developed naturally, and the emotional moments felt just as impactful as the romantic ones.
The world-building was immersive without becoming overwhelming, and I quickly found myself invested in both the characters and the setting. The writing flowed well, making it easy to stay engaged from beginning to end. There were plenty of heartfelt moments alongside the spice, and the spice is just .... 🫣🫣🫣🤭🤭🤭.
The story has a satisfying emotional depth. And there are also other characters that I would definitely love to read their story....(coughs King Valarik coughs)👀

If you enjoy protective heroes, slow-burn romance with plenty of tension, emotional character growth and monster romances with heart, this is definitely one to add to your TBR.

Sloane and Torik are both caretakers who've forgotten how to let anyone take care of them. They are both the kind of people who run on empty because someone has to. I enjoyed watching the two exhausted healers slowly learn to lean on each other.

The chemistry between them is so good! The slow burn between them pays off in a way that feels earned and genuine. I loved the worldbuilding. The way their bond is tied to something bigger than themselves gives the story stakes that feel much larger than romance alone, without ever losing its cozy vibes.

Healing the Demon is the kind of fantasy romance that makes you want to cancel your plans; it is cozy enough to feel like a warm hug, spicy enough to keep you up past midnight. Newcomers can dive right in without having read book one; though you'll want to go back and grab it anyway, because this world only gets richer the more of it you explore!

Evelyn Embers is quickly becoming my favorite cozy monster romance author. I don’t know what she puts into these books but I devour them whole!

This story was the absolute perfect spicy, cozy, monster romance for me. This delivered every single thing that I wanted; cinnamon roll MMC, feisty, strong, and smart FMC in her 30s, top-tier banter, an adorable pet dragon, forced proximity, one bed, a chase in the woods, tail play, real world emotions, delicious spice, and he washes her hair!!!!

Evelyn’s books will transport you to another realm and connect you to her characters quickly. You will stay up past your bedtime to finish these because you cannot put them down!

While reading Healing the Demon I felt all of the emotions; I kicked my feet, I giggled, I swooned, and I wished for it to never end!

I absolutely love this series and I am already dying for the next book! I can’t recommend this enough!!

​If I had to describe this book in one word it would be... TENDER 🌿
​I absolutely loved returning to this whimsical monster romance world. Sloane is an overworked and underappreciated hospital worker who falls right through the rift into the lap of Torik, a local healer who is way in over his head!
​The dynamic between two healthcare workers from completely different worlds was so unique, and their top-tier communication and off-the-charts chemistry made them so easy to fall in love with! Having characters with dedicated passions and real-world burnouts made this fantasy feel deeply grounded, comforting, and relatable.
​I’m giving this 4 stars! ⭐️ The character growth and heart-healing moments were so satisfying. I devoured this and highly recommend picking it up on release day!

This was a fab follow-up to book one and I loved seeing demon, Torik, and ER nurse, Sloane, work their way together. She's overworked but that doesn't stop her curiosity when she sees a purple light down an alley. Investigating that gave her consequences she didn't even know could exist ;) Torik is out trying to gather more medicinal herb supplies when he sees Sloane and knows she's in mortal danger if any other demon finds her. Of course, a 7ft demon chasing after you is not the kind of excitement any gal is looking for...until she knows her demon, that is ;P These two find themselves fascinated with each other and soon enough, trust and love bloom between them... Expect to get caught up in the drama, action, danger, curiosity and primal steam as these two get their HEA. Definitely a page turner for me and I'm looking forward to the next book. Good fun!

This monster romance story is about Sloane an ER nurse and Torik a demon healer. Sloane who's so tired of fighting the system of indifference goes outside on break when a co-worker asks her to check up on a stray cat. They've been taking care of it in the alley. Following the mews she finds a portal and when she touches it gets swept in. She lands torn and bruised in another world. Sloane hears a noise and then sees a large creature she flees. It chases her and catches her. This is how she meets Torik. What ensues is an engaging story that I'd enjoyed reading. Our characters were likable and caring and engaging to read about. This is the second in this series (I'd haven't read the first yet), but I was able to follow this enjoyable romance story of love and surviving on a dying world. I'd volunteer to read and review this story.

Healing the Demon checks everything on my list: logical and older FMC, green flag monster MMC, fantasy, romance, light hearted.

I love the backstory of both Torik and Sloane and how they both overcame their trauma one step at a time. Their moments together are just so sweet, while saving room for the spicy.

I didn't quite pay attention to the fact that this was the second book in the series, but everything still made sense since it follows a different relationship while leaving room to go back for book 1 and set up for book 3.

The author, Evelyn Embers, also does a fantastic job at weaving real world problems into the story. Periods, body representation, burnout, PTSD. It's how we want to tackle it in the real world, but...can't.

I enjoyed every moment of this book. The magic, the characters, the banter and the 🌶️ spice.

The world building was fantastic and I particularly loved the way human medicine was beautifully interwoven into demon healing. Sloane came from the human world feeling trapped and silenced, and managed to be freed and find her voice with Torik. Even in a demon realm she was able to find a home that welcomed her more than her previous work on Earth.

My favourite quote is a tie between

"I want to live here — openly, loudly, with you — and help people and yell when I’m mad and laugh when I’m happy and take up every inch of space that I deserve.”

Or the more spicy one..

"Hands on the horns." 😈

I was lucky enough to get an early copy of this book, and now I'm going back to read the first one!

(However it works fine as a standalone too!).

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC for this book.

This was a quick read (for me) but still felt like a complete story. This is the 2nd book in the Demons of the Rift series, which (oops) I read before book one. My bad, but not really. Even though this is the continuation of a story, I was able to enjoy it without many spoilers for book one. There are a few here and there, but with the way Evelyn Embers writes, I know there is MUCH more to the story, and I have only had a taste.

There was a beautiful connection between two healers who are working to heal the world around them and each other. And the one question this book left me with, I was SO EXCITED to learn, will be addressed in book 3. I can’t wait!

I loved this book.
Sloane is an ER nurse in school when she is transported to the demon lands. So when she is found by a healer demon who takes her home she jumps into the medicine instead of panicking right away. Torik has been around for centuries and now he is hiding a human in his home. He has a job as the local healer so finding out that Sloane is also one for her people is a great addition to his practice.
They find a routine as they share their lives in his home and world since she cannot return to hers. As they grow closer they have a spark that wont be denied for long. Torik finds the beauty of the female human body as they explore their growing connection. He helps with the treating the a colored woman's hair too which starts the whole thing lol.

This book may have just healed my soul. I was so invested in this story and lost in it that responsibilities were completely forgotten. Who needs to eat or sleep when there is reading to be done. Sloane is so ridiculously relatable it’s insane. I laughed so hard at the curiosity got the cat moment that brought her to Torik’s world. And that man’s instant need to protect her from harm was so swoon worthy I almost fell over. Watching these two grow closer and seeing things develop between them was beyond endearing and warmed my heart. The connection and chemistry was undeniable and utterly insane. I adored getting to see how their connection changed not only the two of them but the world around them too.

Give me a grumpy, emotionally constipated demon with a soft centre and I'm sold every single time. The romance was so sweet, the emotional journey hit all the right notes, and the chemistry? Top tier.

And yes... there is spicy tail play, so if that's your thing, you're in for a treat 👀🌶️

I laughed, I swooned, I kicked my feet, and I genuinely didn't want it to end. It's the perfect mix of monster romance, healing, found family, and spice that actually adds to the story.

And that last chapter OMGGGGG, I need book 3 immediately!

Torik and Sloane's story was healing in so many ways. Honestly, Torik was the absolute perfect combination of a dark, broody shadow daddy mixed with a caring, overly affectionate cinnamon roll. He takes such good care of Sloane, but he also knows when to step back and let her be herself, even when all his instincts are screaming at him to protect her and hide her away.

This was such an amazing read! Beyond the romance and all that spice, there was a really solid world being built here, and I'm so excited to see where the author takes us next.

A truly cozy love story! I was lucky enough to get my hands on this book early, and it did not disappoint! Her ability to keep a truly human/grounded element while writing in the world of fantasy was so refreshing, I never felt like she sacrificed practicality for the plot (within reason, there's a literal demon). I loved the realistic and genuine connection that was built between the main characters, and definitely recommend! Also, I appreciated the multiple points of view, so I never had to guess what the main characters were thinking.
