Dead End Dating #2

Dead and Dateless

SHE’D LIKE HER BLOOD BOTTLED, PLEASE!

The sassiest vampire in all of Manhattan, Lil Marchette, is the owner of Dead End Dating–a matchmaking service for hip, intelligent singles like herself. After only three months, business is booming, and she can finally pay her bills (or, more important, feed a hungry cosmetics addiction). But when one of her clients turns up dead (as in never coming back), Lil is named as the prime suspect.
Murder?

Sure, she’s a vampire, but she can’t even work up her nerve when it comes to blood-sucking. Hacking somebody to pieces is so out of the question.

To make matters worse, Lil must also contend with a pack of werewolves who ask–no, demand–that she find each one a tall, dark, and handsome mate before the next full moon. Plus, the to-die-for-if-I wasn’t-already-dead Ty Bonner, a lusciously sexy lover but totally unsuitable eternity mate, is never far from her midnight fantasies. But Lil has no time for such thoughts. She must prove her innocence and focus on pairing off the dead and the furry–and maybe stake a claim to her own tasty true love.

I've always been an incurable romantic. While I enjoy reading all types of fiction, my favorites, the books that touch my soul, are romance novels. From sexy to thrilling, sweet to humorous, I like them all. But what I really love is writing romance--the hotter the better!

I started my first novel back in high school and have been writing ever since. To date, I've published over thirty novels, one of them a prestigious RITA Award nominee, Romance Writers of America's highest award of excellence. I have also been nominated by Romantic Times magazine for several Reviewer's Choice awards, as well as a career achievement award.

I've written for several different publishers, including Harlequin Books, Leisure Books, Berkley/Jove, St. Martin's Press and Warner Books. Born and bred in the Lone Start State, I still live deep in the heart with my real-life hero, Curt, and our young children.

Like any over-worked, under-appreciated wife and mother, I have very little free time. But when I find a few precious moments, I LOVE to read. Some of my favorite authors include Janet Evanovich, Vicki Lewis Thompson, Charlaine Harris (see my Favorite Reads page for more) and the exceptionally talented Nina Bangs. Give me a bag of Sugar Babies, a Toby Keith or Kevin Fowler CD (I love Texas music), and a great book, and I'm in heaven!

I only gave this one three stars because it is about vampires and vampires automatically merit three stars.

This is one where I loved the concept but the writer just couldn't pull it off as well as she should have. She creates a great little mythology (and apparently this is a series) but her writing is just too self-absorbed for me to spend more time on it.

I will just say that it is not worthy of being in the same genre as the "Blade" movies.

Anna, don't be fooled by the fact that the Nerd series writer has written the glowing cover quote -- it isn't up to her standards (or, rather, not up to the early ones; it might be comparable with the later ones).

I struggle with these books. I love the humour and quips, don't mind the plot, BUT, it drives me insane and I have to SKIP LOADS.

The PAGES of digressing, procrastination, sheer stupidity, and total blathering detracts HUGELY from what's actually happening. Instead of a couple of paragraphs of quips and blundering about, it has pages of blundering about. You've just about lost the plot and what's happening by the time the story is re-approached.

The stupidity is supposed to be ditzy and girlish, but it just doesn't do it for me. It drives me nuts.

The romantic effect is just plain frustrating, and goes on and on for books worth, making it pointless and trite.

I might, and that's a big might, manage to cautiously stalk around the next book, but I expect that to be a looong time coming.

This book is ridiculously dated and also utterly ridiculous.

Genre: Vampire Romance/Screwball Comedy

Like the others in this series, it is more of a tongue-in-cheek comedy then a mystery (although it has one) or a romance (though it has that too). Lil, our intrepid matchmaker is being framed for murder. Meanwhile she's got to find 27 hunky alpha-male types for a big werewolf shindig in just 1 week! Guess which she puts the higher priority on? ;-) The perpetrator of the murder blindsides everyone - Lil, Ty (the "megalicious" bounty hunter attempting to clear her name), and the reader. However, that didn't leave me grumpy as the story is told from Lil's perspective and it 100% blindsided her! Lil's family shenanigans continue to develop, much to the reader's (although not necessarily Lil's) amusement.

Lil Marchette owns Dead End Dating–a matchmaking service which is making good money. But then Lil is accused of a brutal murder and has to go on the run, while trying to find a way to clear her name and find people dates.

I'm not finding these humour books funny at all and this was one of the worst I've read. Lil is a dreadful character-ditzy, irritating, moronic, whiny and I wanted to put a stake in her myself. If you thought Queen Betsy was annoying then you probably don't want to meet Lil anytime soon. The plot was poor, the supporting cast were boring and there was nothing interesting about the obligatory love interest who was bland and boring. Overall this was a huge pile of *yawn*

I do love these type of books. Why? They are light reading, they are funny, you can read them fast and not worry about missing a minor detail. Basically a fun summer read.

Alright, Lil is kind of a bit of a pain throughout this story. Which I’m pretty sure I found in the first tale as well. She’s just a little too… well, girly for lack of a better word. Not someone that I can really sympathise with very well. Having said that, even though she has a tendency to be a little irritating, I also loved her character. It’s kind of making fun at some of the socialites and those with a tendency to focus on their looks. At least, that’s how I take her character. Because, at the end of the day, even though she’s kind of vapid and a little irritating, she’s also seriously sweet and has a great heart. You just can’t help but love her, even when you’re beginning to feel a little irritated by her characterisation in moments…

I love Ty as a counterpoint to Lil. A bit like my own partner and I, where Lil is light and air and all positive, rainbow vibes, Ty is dark, twisty and communicationally stunted. Yet, I think that this turns them into the perfect partnership. After all, the saying opposites attract is around for a reason… I’m seriously, seriously hoping that they work out as a couple in the next few books… not entirely sure what my feelings will be if Raye pulls that rug out from under me…

To top off the humour and the slightly satirical feel of this story, I absolutely loved the werewolf mating ritual in this story. And, also how that all works out as a secondary plot to you know… Lil being wanted for murder. Particularly her hunt for an alpha red head. And her unique solution to the issue. It had me grinning and giggling throughout the whole story. And I love that Raye was able to take a well-known paranormal species and give them yet another new twist (like she did with the creation of vampires).

I was quite surprised at who the villain was in this story. I feel like I really should have guessed… but, whilst I wasn’t completely floored and shocked… I definitely didn’t predict it either. Which, ultimately is something that I tend to love in a good book anyway. After all, being able to guess things all the time can get a little… well, boring. And this novel is anything but boring. I can’t wait to sink my fangs… I mean teeth… into Your Coffin or Mine?

"I need a man."

Countess Lilliana Arrabella guinevere du Marchette aka Lil has been the proud owner of Dead End Dating for three months. She is just starting to be able to pay her bills and be independent when she is accused of murdering a client.

I read the first book in this series fifteen years ago. I seem to recall that it was cute, but this one fell a bit flat. It could be because it is a little more dated than what I'm used to reading. The premise is good. Lil runs a dating service for supernatural and human clients. It is definitely a niche service.

The best part of the book was trying to find twenty-seven men for the local female werewolf pack to mate with under the lunar eclipse. The murder was almost an oh by the way plot.

I became annoyed early on with Lil every time she mentioned she was a born vampire. The romance is iffy and often annoying as well.

I should have seen who the killer was earlier than I did although I did skim through some of the repetitious dialog.

I didn't look to see if there are more books in the series because I will not be continuing with it.

Actually, more of a 2.5 star read.

When Lil got accused, I thought that she would end up in jail. Then the book would be boring. Luckily, she was on the run the whole time, so it wasn't boring. And she finally did IT with Ty! Yay!! Her whole I-want-to-have-sex-but-not-meaningless-sex-and-it-would-only-be-meaningless-with-a-made vampire was starting to really get on my nerves. I might not have read the third book if they hadn't finally had sex. Luckily, Kimberly Raye didn't hold back on the details...but the sex scene could have been better written, though it was good.
that morgue scene was good...

Meh. This wasn't as funny as the first book. I missed seeing all the fun side characters. There was entirely too much Lil the obnoxious for me. I really hoped that in the midst of the stress of being wanted for murder, Lil would open up. Sadly, the only "emotion" the twit has is horny. Going to read the 3rd book in hopes the author completely revamps (see what I did there) the shallow main character. Lil needs to watch a good sunrise.

The first book took me a moment to get into but after getting comfortable with the characters and writing style, I am going to fly through the rest of the series.

I love the relationship between Lil and Ty. I was a little worried about it dragging out along through 5 books, but the pacing is working well.

I am becoming attached to Lil as the story continues and the next book is already waiting me for on the shelf.

Quirky. Light hearted and a nice break from some heavier books. I give it 2.5 stars. I was intrigued and captivated enough to read quickly but the ditzy repetitive comments about being so superbly vampire babe irritated me. I’m still planning on reading more of her series but they aren’t my favorite

Following up the original Dead End Dating, Dead and Dateless delves much further into Liv's blooming romance with the born vampire Tyler, shows her still struggling to keep her new dating service afoot, and this time around running from the police and trying to clear her name in a messy murder investigation. Plot-wise there's a bunch of happenings stuffed in here, much more than the first, yet it all manages to weave together tirelessly, donating ample time to each plot point but never overcrowding the pot.

Dead End Dating was a fun book with an amusing character that didn't annoy, but in this sequel Liv wasn't as likable. First of all, who takes a murder investigation so lightly when they waltz around town? At first she realizes the seriousness of the situation, but this never seems to last. She grew too bored in her FIRST NIGHT of hiding, so bored to the point that she has to leave the apartment and explore town. I can be more understanding on needing to scope out how her new-born biz is doing, but her restless itch to have fun and not take the cops more seriously grated on my nerves. When a main character acts that stupid, it gets a little frustrating.

An even bigger gripe I held was her mother. In the first book her setting Liv up and being oddly dysfunctional made a cute read, but this time the undead's parents get a lot more of the spotlight, and not in a good way. I'm sure Raye wrote the mother to be amusing, but instead it was annoying how she seemed to ignore the fact her only daughter was wanted for killing a man and was a refugee from the police. Come on, clearly she could be forgiven and pardoned for missing tea brunches and the weekly family hunt considering the circumstances? And then Liv placing those things - that she loathes anyway - above her own freedom couldn't sit well with me.

Relationship-wise, Raye fortunately delved much further into the relationship with Ty, giving the two plenty of interaction time. I have no complaints in this department, for the writer did a great job showing expected discomfort, lustful situations, and even funnier misunderstandings. The ending, as before, leaves the couple as an open door that could go either way.

Overall I was disappointed with the sequel. It's still written in the same manner Raye painted previously, but some of the situations were so over the top they just repelled the saner side of me. I find it impossible to root for main characters who act stupid much of the time, and I just wanted to slap the mother every other chapter, gritting my teeth. There also seemed to be less laugh out loud humor, even if it was attempted. It's worth a read, and you don't have to read the original book first - although it's recommended - to start the series, but I'm hoping the third book will be much better.

Lil Marchette, an immortal born vampire, owner of Dead End Dating, seeker of killer outfits with designer labels...is wanted for murdering a client.

This believer in happily-ever-afters sleeps in Hello Kitty pajamas, drinks her blood from a bottle, and is holding out for her very own soulmate for eternity. How could she possibly kill someone by chopping them into tiny little bits?

She turns to Ty Bonner, a gorgeous bounty hunter (and made vampire) to help her clear her name. He smells wonderful, looks delicious...and is soooo off limits to Lil in the vampire social arena since born vampires only marry other born vampires.

Running her business away from the office becomes a logistical nightmare, but she's got clients to match and a deadline to meet if she wants to get paid.

Time is running short, stress is running high, and her labido shifts into overdrive when she's forced to go into hiding with Ty by her side. Their mutual attraction becomes irresistible, and Lil gives in to her craving...mostly. Phenomenal sex but no sharing blood.

Lil discovers the killer's identity when an attempt is made on both her and Ty's lives.
Her quick thinking saves them both. The killer is caught, Lil life returns to normal after being cleared of all charges, and her clients are thrilled.

Now if she could convince her heart Ty's touch wasn't more than just good sex, everything would be perfect. And if he ever decides to show up or talk to her again, she plans to let set him straight.

This book is pure fun!

I love Lil's sassy attitude and her totally addicted-to-designer-clothes weakness. We've all been there, right?

Add to that the universal mother chant of "Why haven't you found a good boy to marry and give me grandchildren?" conflict. That's a pressure that would drive any girl crazy...maybe enough to kill!

And the romance? The sizzling hot connection between Lil and Ty leaps off the page. This conflict keeps the push/pull attraction between these two characters going strong.

I yearned for Lil to stop fighting herself and give Ty a chance. When she finally did, I cheered from the sidelines. Who wouldn't? He's an ooberliscious alpha male with rugged charm to spare.

With Lil and Ty's relationship unsettled, I can't wait for the next book so I can see how things will heat up between my favorite shopaholic and her dreamy bounty hunter!

After reading the first book in this series, I was a little on the fence about it. Lil, the heroine, was a little too fashion obsessed and self-obsessed, constantly reminding us that born vamps, herself included, are all ultra sexy and desirable...and there was a plot line in the middle of the book that just did not sit well with me and made no sense to me. But I was very enamored of Ty the bounty hunter.

In this second book, Lil is happily working away at her dating service when the cops suddenly bust in and arrest her for murder, claiming she chopped a man up. Using her vamp strength she is able to escape and goes on the lam. After a good (or actually bad) 24 hours of trying to hide out on her own, she finally calls Ty the bounty hunter, who she is very attracted to but doesn't want to be attracted to because he's a made vamp, not a born vamp. Made vamps can't procreate, so made and born do not get together. Anyway, Ty takes her in and assures her he believes she's innocent and they'll figure it out.

Lil is still too fashion obsessed and self-obsessed, and knowing the police are looking for her and there is a bounty on her head you'd think she'd be more careful, but she insists on running around doing what she wants to do, which puts both her and Ty in even more danger. So I was a little frustrated with her throughout the book. But I'm still quite enamored of Ty, and I did enjoy this book more than the first one.

I love love LOVED the first book. Let me start by saying that. Now, let me say I was somewhat disappointed by this installment in the DED series. There was WAY too much I'm-so-horny-I-could-die-if-I-wasn't-already-dead-but-let-me-restate-that-fact-repeatedly-throughout-the-next-two-hundred-pages from the main character, Lil. And the fact that the whole book centered on her not "getting any" and her refusing to "get some" from her love interest "the megalicious bounty hunter" Ty, even though throughout the first book straight on into this one she practically begs the guys thighs off. (Seriously, and I thought porn stars were bad, but they at least have a little self-control when off camera.) And then suddenly, Kimberly Raye's brain cells must have turned against her, because now she's gone ahead and made Lil do exactly what she was trying NOT to do, and now the whole I'm-so-horny thing turns into I've-suddenly-solved-everything-that-I've-been-confused-about! (More commonly known as the Eureka! moment.) (Cue Deus-ex-Machina and suddenly everything's been solved) And to think, all of the problems the main characters were faced with could have been solved with one little hump. By far, this is one of the worst followups in a series. EVER. And yet, I still enjoyed it for the little moments of anti-stupidity (which were rare.)

Okay, so Lil is growing on me. I'm still not crazy about the vampire rules of these books, but it's still a pretty decent read. My quibbles with this one were minor:

1. The story is about Lil being framed for murder. Hardly any part of the book is her actually looking for the murderer. And it's wrapped up a little too quickly. But the first book did that, too.

2. This is a bigger quibble. When Lil heads to a New York Knicks game to pass out business cards, she says they're playing the Orlando Heat. Um...no. Sweetie, you're mixing your Florida basketball teams. It's the Orlando MAGIC or the MIAMI Heat. Smacks of sloppy editing in my book.

Now this is just a musing on my part, but I got to thinking about how we change as we get older. I mean, face it, I'm certainly not the same person I was 20 years ago. (Heck, I'm not the same person I was three months ago, since Jack showed up.) What kind of changes does a 500 year old vampire go through? As of right now, she's sort of a cross between a rich-bitch/valley girl/female Chandler from "Friends". She doesn't age, so what was she like in 1950? 1880? 1730?

This review is for books 1-5 of the DED series. I am just reviewing them now because I litterally could not stop reading. These books were hilarious! I read a lot at night and I had to get up several times and go into another room because I was laughing so hard I thought that I might wake up my husband. If you like Katie MacAlister and Molly Harperyou will love this series. I really don't have any complaints other than I'm not into name brand clothes and stuff so I either skipped over the parts that went into detail of what someone was wearing or a couple times I looked it up so that I could get an idea of what it looked like. According to Kimberly Raye's website the 6th book in the series will be re-released by a new publisher in e-book format so I am impatiently waiting for that. I read the little blurb at the end of book 5 and I'm dying to read it!

Dead and Dateless is the second installment of the story of 500 year old vampire, Lil Marchatte.

Unlike most vampires, she gets squeemish at the site of blood. "I prefer bottle men," is her mantra. She also suffers from the disease of incurable romantic, a plague to your stereotypical vampire.

As you can imagine, it surprised her as much as the reader when the authorities come to her with accusations of brutally murdering a client of her matchmaking business.

The wild ride of her flight into hiding, attempting to set up more than 25 horny werewolves, searching for an Alpha Male Howdy Doody, and far too much time with a hot male vamp that's completely off-limits will keep your pages turning so fast your head will spin.

If you like chick-lit, quirky, vampire tales... this sequel is right for you. Pick up the first in the series, Dead End Dating, as well and enjoy this different take on vampire society.

A great follow up to her first book.

Lil is a 500 year old vampire who owns a dating service. The police walk in and try to arrest her for murder. Of course she will not allow that to happen so she runs. They follow her back to her apartment, and later try to find her at her parents house in CT. So what does she do, she goes to Ty (the ultra hot vamp bounty hunter). As he tries to protect her from herself, and she tries to run her business while on the run from the cops the two discover that besides the growing attraction between themselves that someone is out to frame Lil. They must figure out who is trying to hurt her, and it very well might be someone close to Lil.

I think this was a great story and a really quick read. I like the relationship between Ty and Lil but I'm getting a little irritated with the build up of sexual tension, only to be relieved for a short while and then for something to happen to wrench the two apart.

I picked this up at the grocery store last week because it looked kind of funny. I didn't realize it was part of a series of books. Apparently this one is the 2nd book, but stands alone well enough to have read by itself. The 1st book is Dead End Dating.

Lil Marchette is the owner of a matchmaking service, Dead End Dating. She's also a shopping addict behind on her credit card bills. Oh, and did I mention, she's also a 500-year old born vampire, meaning she's the offspring of two vampires. Who knew there was such a class division between born vampires and made vampires? Not to mention werewolves and Others.

It is part The Devil Wears Prada, part Interview With a Vampire, and part trashy romance novel, which equals a fun quick read!
