Audiobook version. I was always curious about the mysterious D and what his deal was. Even more curious to know what would make the man's heart melt in the special way of heroes. Through most of the book, he is still that cold, seemingly unfeeling guy we've seen in other books of the series but here we find there's much more to him. There's a depth that only Sophia has gotten close enough to witness. After a one night stand, he and Sophia have a lifetime connection. Eventually an emotional one, but initially a physical one. A baby. When Sophia goes searching for him, she lands herself in quite the predicament. They have to work together to survive. When they come together sensually, it is absolutely sinful. Delish. We also get a view into Sullivan's captivity and the torture he endured for over 6 months. McGregor has been tirelessly looking for him and is increasingly putting himself and others at risk. Lots of action. Great plot. Great writing. Consistent characters. Safety: H kisses OW as part of an op. No OM/Sharing.

His eyes narrowed as he advanced on her. Like a predator. Because he was a predator. A ruthless soldier, lethal and impassive, and yet right now, she didn't mind being the prey. If she were being honest, she preferred it.

Clearly I've been living under a rock somewhere because that would be the only explanation for why this amazing series by one of my favorite authors is only hitting my radar now. Romantic Suspense is one of my favorite genres, and as such, I've read a lot of it. So that means I also happen to be extremely picky with it because I've read so much of it. Pamela Clare, Cindy Gerard, Lynn Raye Harris and Christy Reece have always been my go-to's in this genre, and now I can safely add Elle Kennedy to that list.
Why did he always leave her wanting more? She didn't know him. She wasn't sure she liked him. Yet she always wanted more.

Now for all you OCD people, I hope you're sitting down, because I'm about to admit that I started this series with book 7. What? I like to live dangerously like that. But what that also means, is even though it's clear that these characters all have intermingling backstories, I had no problems being sucked in right away and never felt lost.

Derek “D” Pratt is cold, ruthless, and wants no entanglements in his life; romantic or friendship. He's a lone wolf and he prefers it that way. After giving into the crackling sexual tension between him and the sassy doctor that works in a clinic that patches up most of his teammates, he expects that to be the end of it and for his lust to be sated. But life is never quite so simple.

When he figures out that the teammate that went missing six months ago and everyone believes dead was taken because of him; he's determined to rescue him. He knows where he was taken and he knows that if he's not dead then he'll be wishing he was. So Derek finds himself back in Mexico to deal with a man that he hoped never to see again. But when Sofia ends up on his doorstep with unexpected news, he has to focus not only on rescuing his teammate but protecting the woman that he can't seem to work out of his system.
You think if you know what happened to me you'll magically be able to figure me out me? Fix me? Baby, nobody can fix me. I'm broken beyond repair."

Midnight Revenge is an action packed ride that's as gritty as it is sexy. It's not for the faint of heart because it deals with some subject matter that may be disturbing for some. As for me? That only served to make this book as good as it was. I loved the grittiness of it. Derek is a very damaged man with a very troubling past. I spent parts of the book wanting to hate him for his cold treatment and indifference but not quite being able to because I knew there had to be a good reason for him to be the way that he is. And let's just say that when the truth comes out, my heart broke for him

Sofia was a great match for him and I loved how she balanced him out. She never demanded anything from him or whined about their situation. She simply excepted things for the way they are and tried to make the best of it. I did have a little trouble wrapping my mind around Noelle's actions in sending her to Mexico knowing what she knows...though at the same time, a part of me understood it as well. As much as I wanted to judge a few of Sofia's decisions as well, I can't say that it didn't make for some action packed and entertaining to read events.

I absolutely devoured this book. As a reader that loves the grittier reads and the broody and damaged heroes, this was exactly the kind of story I enjoy. The balance of suspense/action and romance was great and one never overshadowed the other. I also really loved the additional peek at Sully and Liam's story. I'm hoping and praying that we'll get a book for them, because if anything is better than a RS by Elle Kennedy, it's an MM Romantic Suspense by Elle Kennedy.

If you're looking for a romantic suspense with a sizzling romance and a touch of grit, you've found your next must read. I love how versatile this author is with being able to write sexy NA and sizzling RS and putting her all into it.

Midnight Revenge was filled with bullets and intrigue. It was a non-stop action-packed ride. The romance only served to tip the scale from good to absolutely unputdownable. If you're a fan of this genre and you haven't read this series yet, you're definitely missing out!

Well, I can let a breath out and relax now that I’m finished with Midnight Revenge! I think this is the most suspenseful installment in the series!

Derek Pratt, or “D” as everyone calls him was the toughest character in the team. Unfeeling and remote is how he came off, although I think there was a little hinting of feeling here and there over the series. For the most part his past and life has been a mystery, but I just knew something horrific had to happen to shape him. It was bad!! Sickening bad. I was wondering if and how Elle Kennedy would crack Derek’s tough outer shell, and truly sell it. I had my doubts at first, but the how was Sofia. Elle Kennedy crafted their relationship perfectly, and believably. Sofia didn’t pressure or judge Derek, not that she was without conscience, but she got him, could see through to the man he really was. I liked that the tough-as-nails Derek actually had an awkward, vulnerable side. Their romance was touching, passionate, and of course, very hot!

I won’t summarize what went down, but I have to say I was on the edge of my seat through most of Midnight Revenge. It was a nail biter at times, but thankfully, because I’m a real sissy when it comes to torture of any kind, any rough scenes where kept vague and short. Still, didn’t mean I didn’t anticipate the worst!

I felt so bad for Sully and everything he went through. I totally understand his actions! I would’ve wanted to do the same. What a horrible woman! I’m wondering if the next book will be Sully and Liam’s romance. Sounds like it’ll be emotional whenever it comes.

The Killer Instincts
series is a must for any romantic suspense/action lover who wants not just a thrill ride, but multi-layered characters and relationships. While there are a lot of thrills, Ms. Kennedy does an excellent job balancing character development with an action filled plot so that you actually care what happens to each and every person. I can’t wait for the next one!

Midnight Revenge is the seventh installment in Elle Kennedy's romantic suspense series titled: Killer Instincts. As of February 2017, I am officially caught up in this series, yay!!! Wait...I'm all caught up, so now we wait. I'm thinking I should have read slower.

Midnight Revenge focuses on hardcore mercenary: D (Derek) and Mexico-based doctor: Sofia. D is an @sshole through and through but you know what they say about mean people. The meaner a person is, the more wounded he/she probably is on the inside. D is no different and I enjoyed watching Sofia's sad but interesting journey to D's vulnerability. There's no doubt that he remains deadly and a complete @ss to his team but readers now see another layer to him. This story had tons of action and suspense that kept the pages turning and just enough sexy moments to keep a smile on my face. The side story in Midnight Revenge is the follow up to the end of the last book Midnight Captive when Sullivan identified himself as D. His parts had my stomach churning and left my gorgeous new dark purple-painted nails in an absolute mess. Lesson learned: Never take ownership of someone else's name in public. You never what debt that person owes.

Note: I don't know how much longer I can wait for Sullivan and Liam's story. For real!! Please!!!!

Oh you bet your asses I'm about to rant.

In many ways Midnight Revenge reminded me of the movie Sicario.Man, that movie. I don't think I'll ever be able to watch it again.
They share the gruesome background, the difficult subjects they approach, a hardened main character, who's seen too much shit in his life to be fazed by anything good or bad happening around him, action so intense you're constantly on the edge of your seat, biting your nails, waiting for whatever happens next. Unlike Sicario, the amount of pathetic in this book is to damn high.

I should probably say that objectively, Midnight Revenge deserves 3, even 4 stars. But the truth is, I didn't like it and I don't want to read it ever again, too.

I wasn't sold on the love between the MC's and I wasn't sold on D's sudden change of heart, and even freakier, a complete 180 change in character after just a couple of fucks.
For the life of me, I couldn't tell what was so special about Sofia (except her magical vagina) he fell for, and that we should care about. It was not her looks, because as we've seen from previous books (and even this one), D has always had gorgeous women throwing themselves at him. It's definitely not her smarts because lol what smarts?

Sofia does have redeeming qualities; she's assertive, has zero tolerance for bullshit, call-em-as-she-see-em type of gal. I wish the story was based on that part of her character, rather than her magical vagina.
The way I see it, she is not special, she is convenient. Any woman who came along could've persuaded him to look her in the eyes while they're fucking, and lo and behold, he'd start catching the feels. Because that's what their whole connection is based on.
It's all very shallow and I didn't care for it one moment.

In case you were wondering why am I seeing this whole relationship between them only from D's point of view, it's because basically, Sofia is a secondary character in this story. She is only there to spur a change in Derek and make him embrace life again, but as a character, she doesn't exist beyond that.

Oh and btw, I have had it with Liam and Sully! Their story is now dragging for three or four books, without any progress at all and I'm sick of it! I swear, Imma cut somebody if have to read a word more about their strained and ruined friendship, how Liam is straight but he has the hots for his gorgeous, handsome male friend, how Sullivan wants to fuck him, but then really doesn't. I'm sooooo done with this. I don't give a fuck what happens with them anymore.

Well, this was a disappointment. I had really low expectations from the start, and it's still a fucking disappointment. I love this series and I really hope this is just a rough patch and it'll get it's mojo back soon and start being awesome again.

4 Action Pack Stars

Midnight Revenge is the seventh book in the Killer Instincts series. This is my second book in the series I have read. Each book are standalones and focuses on a different character. I love Elle Kennedy and I love how she can write different genres. I love an action pack read because there is always a broody male and a damsel.

D is not a nice guy. I really like that. He’s tough, abrasive and filled with secrets. He cares about his team, but he doesn’t care for female relationships. Sofia is the team’s doctor and has a one night stand with D. The steam factor is there and when Sofia and D hook up for the first time, let’s just say it’s no hearts and flowers, it’s pure lust and raw.

“If people fear you, then they won’t try to get close to you. Right, Derek?”

Little does D know, Sofia is pregnant. You know I love a single mama book, so I was all over that. Sofia does the right thing and tracks D down to tell him. D is in the middle of a mission, he’s trying to save Sullivan. Let me just say, I CAN NOT WAIT for Liam and Sullivan’s story. I’m not a mega fan of M/M, but I’m seriously interested in that story. Their chemistry is so hot.

What Sofia doesn’t know is that D is willing to do anything to save Sullivan, even if he’s now becoming a father. D is a tough cookie to crack. Even though he knows he is going to be a Daddy he doesn’t own up to it. He is willing to support the baby financially, but that’s about it. It takes a lot of effort on Sofia’s part to break down his walls. You start to get to see different sides of D and slowly his past is revealed and you find out why he is who he is.

If you are the fan of the series, you will be really happy with this one. It’s action pack, filled with steam and I love the side characters with it.

That synopsis looks like it's on drugs!

I read every line of it and uttered different iterations of "Wha...?" and "Huh?" and "But when did...?" and then I read the last line and I just gave up.

This may be the first time in my reading history that I have to read a book just to understand its sequel's synopsis.....AND I HAVE NEVER LOOKED FORWARD TO A BOOK MORE!

D is that asshole you love to hate and you hate that you love, all wrapped up in one scarily bad-ass, sexy, insane, (secretly-emotionally-vulnerable-but-don't-say-it-out-loud-or-he'll-kill-you-dead) package. We've been leading up to D's comeuppance for a while now, and I seriously CANNOT WAIT to find out all about his past. And also to be further tortured with the Sully-Liam angst trip. And to be teased about Holden's return (and potential pairing with Paige. Unless Paige ends up in a Sully-Liam sandwich, coz we know how amazing EK's MFM books are!) and Ash possibly ending up with Morgan's daughter (talk about a dad-AND-stepmom-with-shotgun sniper grenade just-a-lot-of-ways-to-kill-a-man scenario).

This series, tho. I'm so excited for this book and its potential contents, and its predecessor hasn't even been released yet! Elle, what you and your books do to me!

Reviewed for herding cats & burning soup.

Aaaa assassins! Fast paced and action packed. Kennedy rocks romantic suspense. Hard. And gah I love this series. Midnight Revenge was one I was curious about because it's the D's story. The mercenary even the other badass mercenaries give space. The quick of it is that Derek has done some bad shit in his life and it's come back to haunt him. Unfortunately it's not just his life that's been turned upside down. One of his teammates was mistaken for D and kidnapped. He's been missing for 6 months and most have given up on ever finding him. But D is determined and a tip leads him into even more dangerous waters as he hunts down the people responsible for snagging his teammate.

This one ended up being a mix for me but overall an enjoyable time...

Yay: I really loved Derek. He's cold and almost robotic in his lack of feelings. He's been trained as a killing machine and that's all he knows. There's no softness in his life and he pretty much feels like he's poison. He could be a total ass but knew he was a total ass and it made it endearing somehow. lol I loved his badassness and seeing the softer bits try to come through and how much that messed with him.

Yay: I enjoyed Sofia as well. She's a doctor and crazy smart (though I swear she had some choice moments of omg!). She's a care taker and always trying to fix others. I liked the nurturer in her and that she saw more in D that the outside coldness he projected.

Nay: I had a moment of yelling "stupid fucking heroines!" in the book's general direction.

Nay: A sex scene that prompted this week's Word from the Herd. lol Now. The steamy bits between the two were HOT but one had me questioning their sanity.

Nay: There were a few spots in the storyline that had me going 'wait, hold up now' as far as timeline and plausibility went. I don't remember having that issue in previous books.

The okay: I felt like this book was more about setting up a future book. Yes D's past was dealt with but there was a lot dealing with rescuing a team mate who got caught in the middle of things and the future romance between him and another male on the team. I'm not a fan of that and having genres cross in my series so feeling a bit apprehensive about that. I did like the characters though.

Yay: The suspense was really action packed. The book takes place over like three days and holy cow it's non stop and some very intense moments. Some rather sickening and heartbreaking as well. It's no wonder D was as cold and remote as he was based on the things he had done and seen.

Yay: I really like this team of characters. They're all just...badass. Men and women who are, well, really fucking scary on the outside. lol It's been fun seeing little bits of joy and life work their way into their lives and seeing them come together as a team.

Overall, an entertaining read. It wasn't my favorite of the series and I had a couple quibbles but they really were rather minor ones and I enjoyed the characters and spending a little time with them.

I’m just going to be straight here… I NEVER Loved D. He always was so abrasive and rude and just absolutely not the guy I find myself falling for in these kinds of books. So to say I was a little hesitant to read this book would be an understatement.

But how on earth am I supposed to resist and early copy of an Elle Kennedy book? Much less one from this series? The answer obviously is that I couldn’t.

If you’ve read the other books in this series, you know Derek has secrets. Secrets about who he used to be, secrets about when he was younger and secrets about the things he has done in his life. He connects with no one on any kind of level, instead keeping that lone wolf persona tightly in place, even sex is impersonal and lacking any kind of feeling.

When one of Derek’s teammates ends up missing, and a clue to where he might be and why points him to his past he’s bound and determined to get Sullivan out, even if it’s going to cost him his life. What he doesn’t count on is Sofia. The team’s unofficial doctor who he had a one night stand with months ago. And he certainly doesn’t expect her to tell him that he’s going to be a father. When she gets dragged into the mission he has no choice but to do everything he can to make sure she and the baby make it out alive.

I have to tell you that Kennedy does an amazing job of weaving these stories. While this is definitely Derek’s book, we also gets bits and pieces of the periphery stories… the books that (I HOPE) are coming up soon. (Cough SULLY & LIAM )

Of course Kennedy can write amazingly sexy and steamy scenes and we definitely get them here, but we also get something unexpected because we get to see a side to Derek that I never in a million years expected… a somewhat soft, awkward and sweet guy. I KNOW… can you believe it. It was seriously so wonderful to see him connect with someone and actually let someone in and admit that Sofia and this team of guys that he works with actually mean more to him then he’d ever let on in the past.

So there you have it… I’m totally Team Derek, though I still think book 5 is probably my favorite, this one is definitely a close second. I’m impatiently waiting to see who we get to learn more about next and if you haven’t started this series, I can’t tell you enough to dive in and give it a chance.
Thank you to the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.

Another solid installment in Elle Kennedy's Killer Instincts series. While this was not my favorite book of the series, it was still chock full of action and edge of your seat moments.

Midnight Revenge focuses on one of the more mysterious members of Jim Morgan's black ops team: Derek "D" Pratt. Derek is a dark character. He's seen lots of nasty things during his career and he doesn't do relationships. Until he meets Sofia.

Midnight Revenge is the seventh book in the series. While it can be read as a stand alone book, it is best enjoyed when the series is read in order.

Recommended read.

Midnight Revenge is the seventh book in the Killer Instincts series by Elle Kennedy. Though each can be read as a standalone, there are some plotlines that cross over from one book to the next. This is actually the first book I've read in the series, though not the first that I've read by this author. I've enjoyed her new adult Off Campus series, and her military Out of Uniform series. I wasn't sure what to expect in the way of a romantic suspense story as a result. I had no problem picking up the story right from the start as any lingering plot points from the previous story were quickly explained for readers to catch up. In this case, it's that Derek (or D as he's known) has a teammate named Sullivan who has been missing for several months, presumed dead. But D isn't ready to give up on him yet, and is looking at all angles to continue the search, as is their teammate Liam. At the start of this story, Liam is injured on a mission and brought to a local doctor, Sofia, who is on call for their team when they are in Mexico and need medical help. D and Sofia share a quick and steamy (but emotionless) rendezvous, with no expectations of a relationship. D doesn't believe in them, and Sofia is definitely not expecting anything from him, as they see each other very infrequently. But, she winds up pregnant, and feels that he has a right to know, though she has no plans to further their relationship. Unfortunately she shows up to tell D right as he's discovered Sully's whereabouts. Things go from bad to worse as Sofia gets embroiled in the fiasco of a mission. Can D save his friend, his woman, and his chance at a happy future?

Whew! I think that this was one of the more brutal romantic suspense stories that I've read. It would have benefited from having a warning in the synopsis. I don't want to spoil the story, but there are some scenes of torture, sexual abuse and childhood memories of sexual abuse that I personally had a hard time reading (and there were some sections I skimmed over because I really didn't want the images lingering in my mind). But overcoming that, this story was exciting and action packed. D is a hardened killer, a man with no heart (or so it seems) and when you find out about his past it's understandable why he doesn't believe in care and affection or trust. Yet, though he doesn't acknowledge it verbally, he does care about his teammates in his own way, and his guilt over Sullivan's abduction (particularly because he knows it was meant for him) is something he is determined to atone for by finding him no matter the consequences. Sofia throws a wrench into all of his plans, in particular because he doesn't want to care about her. The idea of being a father terrifies him (though he won't admit it) and caring at all for Sofia means a chink in his armor, one he knows his enemies will exploit. Sofia is able to see past D's facade though, to find the humanity in him despite his best efforts at hiding it, and make him realize that he can be capable of love and affection. Though it takes much of the story to get to that point, I loved seeing him realize that he could be worthy of someone's care, and I thought he and Sofia made a worthy couple. They get into some pretty scary situations, and the action is intense for much of the story. In fact, I couldn't put it down, and I had to finish the story in one go to make sure that everyone would be okay in the end. There were some interesting scenes with the other characters, and a clear lead in to the next story in the series, which I will definitely read (because now I need to know what happens next!). So despite some of what for me were scenes beyond my comfort zone, it was definitely an entertaining and riveting read. 4 stars.

More Reviews Here: Readers Live A Thousand Lives

This series is really awesome and I have got to make time to catch up and read the beginning of this series. I started this series weird and dove in with Midnight Captive because the allure of an Ireland setting drew me in. I adored that book, so when I had the chance to read Midnight Revenge I jumped on it and I am so glad I did. This was a great read from beginning to end.

I loved D! He was so cranky and I loved the cranky. It truly amused me to watch him get exasperated with everyone around him trying to help. The angrier he got the more it made me chuckle. But I also liked how awkward he could be. It truly took me by surprise what was underneath and his past absolutely shattered my heart. Sean is still my favorite but D did give him a run for his money at times.

I also loved Sofia. She was strong and when faced with danger she stepped up. Her resilience was great and I admired her in a lot of ways. But girl let common sense fly out the window sometimes. Some of her decisions made me crazy. I know this isn’t her normal world, but you would think she would listen to the people who live in this world. But even with that I did really like her.

Not going to lie though, as much as I liked the romance, that wasn’t my favorite part of the story. Sure I liked D and Sofia together and wanted them to make it work, but I was honestly more invested in the rest of the plot. I actually found myself rushing through the romantic scenes to find out what was going to happen next, which never happens with me. All I could focus on was who took Sully, who was really pulling the strings, would the next plan work. There were so many moving parts to this story and I loved that and I loved that the action kept going nonstop.

And this brings me to Sully and Liam. Those two really stole the show for me in this one. I was SO invested in their story that it wasn’t even funny. Sully absolutely broke my heart and watching Liam endlessly searching for his best friend also broke my heart. They are quickly becoming my favorites. And while I’m on secondary characters. I am loving Ash and I want his and Cate’s book SO BAD. That is sure to be entertaining.

All in all, Midnight Revenge was a great read and I am so glad I discovered this series. It’s not like any other series I’ve read and that makes it such a breath of fresh air for me. The action, the romance, everything about it just pulls you in and doesn’t let you go.

I got this book when it first came out but of course I got distracted with all the shiny books covers of others so I put it off until now.

I haven't read any of the other books not sure if I will. Not because I didn't like this one, I did but I'm not sure if I'm interested in the previous stories. I do know of the 5 pages Noelle was in I hated her. So if she's in the others it'll just bug the shit out of me because she was a freaken

I'm not interested in her being a badass assassin, who falls in love and has a kid but sends the dr who helps out her husband's guys that is pregnant by one of his men to Mexico while they're in the middle of some deep shit. Wtf was that about. And then she comes out like she runs the show. I was annoyed and rolling my eyes. Her brief part in the book ruined it.

Anyway moving on. I really felt for Derek, after reading everything he went through as a child was heartbreaking. I totally saw why is was the way he was.

 photo IMG_2133_zps9pog585s.jpg

I loved Sofia, she was feisty and strong. Exactly the type of person Derek needed. Even if she did put them both in danger. Lol They knew each other for years and she was always intrigued by him. Yet I loved that once they got together she tried to get to know him and show him what he was worth and that she would love him no matter what.
 photo IMG_2134_zpsmi6qfduy.jpg

I was disappointed the epilogue had nothing to do with the couple, I wanted to see how they prevailed but it did intrigue me into want to know what is going to happen with Sullivan and Liam.

He began to laugh. Low, humorless laughter that brought a chill to the already cold cell. “You think if you know what happened to me you’ll magically be able to figure me out? Fix me? Baby, nobody can fix me. I’m broken beyond repair.”

Derek “D” Pratt is the coldest, most ruthless of Jim Morgan’s black-ops organization. He doesn’t care about anything or anyone. I‘ve been looking forward to his book for ages. And he sure lived up to all my expectations ;-)

Sophia is the doctor who treats Jim’s mercenaries when they are injured. And the woman with whom Derek had a one-night stand months ago. But that one time event had repercussions neither of them expected. And even though Sophia hasn’t heard from Derek since that day, she wants to do the right thing and let him know that he was going to be a father. But locating Derek is not so easy, and once she tracks him down she’s caught in the middle of the rescue mission Derek had planned to safe his team mate Sullivan, who was mistakenly captured in his place months ago.

Derek prefers to work alone, especially in his mission to save Sully. He doesn’t want or need the additional worry about keeping Sophia safe. And he sure doesn’t want the feelings she creates in him. Which was why he left so abruptly months ago.

Derek was my favorite part of this book, and I just loved him. He’s such a broken man, and after hearing all the horrible things he endured as a child (which was just sickening), I finally understood why he preferred to be unfeeling and why he doesn’t trust others.

Sophia sure was very feisty and I loved how she wasn’t afraid of Derek and how she didn’t allow him to hide his true self from her. Unfortunately she had way too many TSTL moments for me to love her.

The romance was hot, and the chemistry between Derek and Sophia was scorching and intense. I’m usually not a fan of the pregnancy trope, but it really worked for me in this book. If Sophia hadn’t gotten pregnant she wouldn’t have gone after Derek, and she wouldn’t have forced him to realise what he felt for her. Derek was just too broken, too closed off to realise this on his own, so I’m pretty satisfied with how things worked out for them.

The plot was intense and suspenseful, just like I’ve come to expect from this series. This book was a lot darker than the previous books, and I would caution sensitive readers that there are quite a few triggers with regard to sexual abuse, especially with children. It always sickens me to see how monstrous and inhumane people can be, and some parts of this book was VERY difficult to read.

And don’t even let me get started on the torture that Sully, my beautiful and flirty Australian had to endure. *wails* Six months of such horrific torture that I wanted to cry, and now I’m so worried about what will happen to him. He’s so broken that I don’t even think Liam will be able to fix him. And my heart just broke for Liam, and seeing what his fear and pain for Sully did to him. Will these two ever get their HEA???

This series is one of my favorite RS, right there along with Pamela Clare’s I-Team series. Not a lot of authors are able to get the balance right when it comes to romantic suspense. But this book and this series is fantastic, with just the right amount of romance and suspense to make it a keeper.

A must read for all who loves RS.

This was my second favorite installment after Midnight Action because Derek Pratt was such an enigma. He was the coldest mercenary that works for Jim Morgan. I had been waiting for D’s book for a long time. I will admit that I wanted Jim Morgan to share Noelle with D, but that may be too much for some people, LOL! NO SHARING happened at all. There was no triangle! I was really pleased that this story focused more on the search for Sully more than the relationship between D and Sofia. The author Elle Kennedy did an excellent job keeping the story suspenseful, action packed and thrilling. I have also upgraded the narrator Allyson Ryan to one of my favorite narrators because her arsenal of character voices is amazing. As a narrator, she manages to kept each voice distinct yet engaging. I never felt confused as to who was talking or what was going on. Her inflections, intonation and clarity added an extra layer to an incredibly written book.

In this addition to the series, D and the rest of the team was left worrying about Sullivan (Sully) after he just vanished into thin air. D suspected that Sully’s absence was linked to his past, but he had nothing to go on at all. He went to visit a clinic in Mexico in hopes of finding Sully and there D has a one-night stand with the Dr. Sofia Amaro.
Imagine 8 weeks later, when Sofia shows up pregnant and D retreated into his inner shell. D’s childhood experiences were a doozy so it was clear why he was apprehensive about this new baby. I knew underneath that tough exterior, was a loyal man capable of caring and loving others. I also knew that even though D closed himself off to others, this baby could be an opportunity for healing.
I have to admit that I have issues with Sofia. Why does a woman with her kind of past pursue the most seemingly unattainable guy in Morgan’s crew? How does a doctor get pregnant from one time with a man who used protection? Why does she run head first into a rescue operation when she is no operative? Wouldn’t the safety of her unborn child necessitate more prudence? She was undeveloped like Bailey in the last book. But Sofia’s childhood was sad as well, so I felt bad for her. I did like her but I had grown used to competent and prudent heroines, and I felt like Sofia was swimming out of her depth.

Even so, Sofia and D work as they are both so alone and isolated. I am sure D will get Sofia trained and capable of defending herself. I wouldn’t even be surprised if in a few books she becomes one of Noelle’s operatives. She already treats their wounded mercenaries so she is part of the outer circle.
Now, I will impatiently wait for Sully and Liam’s book. It’s time. I have waited long enough and I want it as soon as possible.

UPDATE #2

Done!
I'm not a fan of Kennedy lately *cough* The Mistake and The Score*cough* but THIS SERIES. This fucking series is gold! I was eager to read Derek's story and it didn't dissapoint. He's so cute! I mean, he's still a badass and most of the time a asshole, but he can also be so sweet.

Now give me Liam and Sully' story. Please! It was heartbreaking to see Sully going through all those horrible things. And they deserve their HEA.
---

UPDATE #1

We have already a cover. Not my favorite but I like it.

---

FINALLY! I have been waiting for you D!
And Sofia Amaro?! YES! I'm not sure how but I knew it. From the moment I read that scene at the hospital in MG between these two, I knew she was gonna be his love interest. YAY!

description

And a freaking baby?! I guess this would be the only way to melt D's defenses. I'm way too eager to read this!

But more Liam and Sully! And I mean more of what happened in MP *wink wink*

I started the Killer Instinct series after loving The Deal by Elle Kennedy last year and quickly became obsessed and read through the books pretty fast. Though I thoroughly enjoyed most of the books, I was particularly excited for Midnight Revenge because of the main character, Derek. With his cold and unfeeling demeanor, there was just something about him I found intriguing and I couldn't wait for Elle Kennedy to peel the layers of his character. Midnight Revenge was everything that I could ask for from Derek's book: sexy, romantic with an edge of danger and heartbreak.

Undoubtedly, Derek's character development in Midnight Revenge was one of the best parts of this story for me. I loved that we were finally able to see into his soul and learn more about his past, which was heartbreaking and made me so angry. He was extremely tough, kept people at an arm's length away, but underneath, he was also fiercely loyal to his friends. His more vulnerable and softer side only began to emerge around Sofia, a doctor that he has a one-night stand with and I thought she was the perfect girl for him. She was equally stubborn and determined and wasn't afraid to tell him how exactly she felt. Not to mention, she was incredibly patient with him and showered him with love in small doses until he couldn't get enough of it. I was initially a little bit worried that their relationship would feel forced because of Sofia's pregnancy, but Elle Kennedy developed their romance so well. Truly, I didn't even need to be concerned. She was able to balance out the heat in their relationship with the more emotional side, making me ship them really hard as a couple - no hesitation. All in all, I think Sofia and Derek might be my favorite romantic couple in this series.

Since this is a romantic suspense series, you expect danger at the end of every point. In this installment, Elle Kennedy amped up the danger and the suspense and had me at the edge of my seat all throughout. I found myself flipping through the pages like a maniac because I was genuinely scared for the safety of the characters. Midnight Revenge was also a whole lot more heartbreaking than the previous books, particularly when it came to a side character, Sully, whose book I'm hoping is next. Elle Kennedy put him through a truly traumatic and distressing situation and my heart broke for him.

Midnight Revenge was one of the best books in the Killer Instinct series for me. I've become so attached to these characters that I just can't get enough of them. The day this series ends will be one of the saddest for me. If you enjoy romantic suspense or are new to genre and want an introduction, then I can't recommend this series enough. Each book is romantic, sexy, a little dangerous, banterific (yes I made up a word) and has some pretty fantastic bromances, so you're in for one heck of a ride!

We meet Derek “D” Pratt in the first book and it is immediately clear that D is a cold person. Not just cold but all things related that are bad. I don't know what I expected from this book because D was certainly not my favourite person from the book and I was more excited for Sully and Liam's part but this book surprised me because the author not only nailed the Laim/Sully story and has now made it impossible to wait more for their book, but D's story was just as amazing!

We met Sofia in the previous books, she is a doctor and often operates on the team members. She was sweet, strong and so perfect. But she was a perfect balance to Derek's character. I really liked how he opened up to her as the story proceeded. And as suspected D's past was the reason why he was like that but it turned out horrible than I expected and then I really felt for him. The lead characters together were really amazing.
“You think if you know what happened to me you’ll magically be able to figure me out? Fix me? Baby, nobody can fix me. I’m broken beyond repair.”

Derek is in Mexico looking for Sullivan and as he suspected his past catches up with him and Sully is suffering because of him. And that he is hell bent on saving Sully and facing the past. But he hadn't expected the whole 'A-Team' to follow him and that overwhelms him. We get see the A-Team together fighting. That was awesome!

We also get Liam and Sully's story which was heartbreakingly sweet and again is very difficult to wait for their book cause of the side story. We get a cameo of all the characters and there's a wedding and all. So it was a nice addition to this series.

Some of my favourite quotes:

“It was so strange. She’d known the man for years, and during that time the only feelings he’d evoked in her were curiosity and indifference. But three measly days at his side, and somehow she’d fallen in love with him.”
*
“I, uh, love you,” D repeated. He clumsily rubbed the back of his neck, then his cheeks. Either she was imagining it, or his fingers were actually trembling.”
*
“Should I say it again?” He looked confused for a beat, but then it turned to wariness. “I’ve never said that to anyone before. Am I supposed to give a longer speech or something?” A laugh flew out. Oh God. This man was priceless. Sofia finally found her voice. “You love me?” “Yeah, I do. I probably should have led with that, but the state of your fucking house really pisses me off and I got sidetracked.”
*
"Why did he always leave her wanting more? She didn't know him. She wasn't sure she liked him. Yet she always wanted more."

My review cross-posted from Wit and Sin: http://witandsin.blogspot.com/2016/01...

Get ready for a dark, gritty, heart-pounding suspense tale mixed with red-hot romance in Midnight Revenge . Elle Kennedy pulls out all the stops as stone-cold mercenary Derek “D” Pratt is thrown for a loop in this enthralling seventh Killer Instincts novel.

I didn’t expect to love D. Out of all of Morgan’s men, D has long been the most hardened, closed-off, scary mercenary of the bunch. I found him interesting before, but I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about him as a hero. Of course, since (1) this is an Elle Kennedy book and (2) scenes in a couple of other Killer Instincts lead me to believe we’d have some surprises in store regarding D, I eagerly dove in. I didn’t know what to expect from him other than a dark and dangerous man who was seriously sexy. What I found as the layers to his character were peeled back was a seriously fantastic hero. D is all the scary things he shows to the world, but he’s also a kick-ass hero who could make me melt at the most unexpected moments. He doesn’t want to care about people, but it’s clear his teammates mean more to him than even he understands. And with Sofia, D is almost…sweet. Yep, Derek Pratt can be incredibly sweet in his own way (who knew?). He’ll never be the cuddly type, but with Sofia he is protective, sometimes awkward, and wholly endearing. His past has scarred him almost to the point of no return, but watching Sofia bring him back and seeing their quiet moments together was fantastic.

It takes a strong heroine to capture not just the attention, but the heart of Derek Pratt. Sofia is more than up the task. She’s a doctor with a huge heart and a spine of steel. D doesn’t scare her, and when she finds out she’s pregnant after their one hot-as-hell encounter two months before, she doesn’t hesitate to track D down. Doing so lands them both in a terrible situation, but even when she’s out of her depth, Sofia doesn’t break. She’s simply a great heroine and the way she draws D out, gets him to open up to her, and shows him love is simply phenomenal. They’ve got serious red-hot chemistry and it’s no surprise that they make the pages of Midnight Revenge sizzle, but it’s their emotional connection that really stood out for me.

Romance aside, there’s a lot of action that keeps Midnight Revenge moving at a fast pace. Once I started the book, I did not want to put it down. Ms. Kennedy knows how to amp up the tension and this story is dark, dangerous, and completely enthralling. The fact that it’s Sully – one of D’s teammates – who is in danger only makes the stakes higher. Of course, the fact that it’s Sully in particular whose life is at risk means that Ms. Kennedy teases out another subplot that’s been running through the past couple of books. Yes indeed, the tension in the Sully-Liam plot is increased to an almost unbearable degree in Midnight Revenge and I absolutely loved it. It’s a testament to how strong D and Sofia are as characters that Liam and Sully didn’t steal the show completely, because those two hot mercs have me on the edge of my seat and I desperately hope they get a book of their own before I (or they) combust.

Midnight Revenge is the seventh book in the Killer Instincts series, and – if you don’t mind minor spoilers from previous books – Ms. Kennedy provides enough information that readers new to the series can easily follow along. Fans of the series are going to love the scenes involving Morgan and Noelle’s joint mercenaries and assassins team, and there are a few light moments that balance out the darkness in the tale. It should be mentioned that Midnight Revenge isn’t for everyone. The story can get incredibly dark, which is no surprise given the kinds of evil our heroes and heroines go up against in this series. In addition, scenes of sexual assault are both discussed and shown, so I wanted to give a trigger warning.

Elle Kennedy is a master of the romantic suspense genre and in Midnight Revenge her talent shines. I absolutely loved D and Sofia and I cannot wait to see where Ms. Kennedy takes the Killer Instincts series next!

Oh D! You leave me breathless! Midnight Revenge is hardcore suspense, full of moments that leave you on edge and breathless!

Derek Pratt is one of Jim Morgan’s mercenaries. He is cold and unfeeling, and does the job at hand, no questions or feelings for anyone around him. When it’s time for him to rescue one of their own who has been captured after a case of mistaken identity, D goes in rogue. He can handle it since he’s the one they want. That is, until his world is thrown for a loop!

Dungeons. Islands in Mexico. Helicopters. Sex trafficking-drug lords. Black ops. The jungle. Fast Boats. A baby… Morgan and his men are what Midnight Revenge is all about. An edge of your seat thriller with heart stopping action and breathless encounters which lead you to believe D does have feelings… and a heart.

The team is devious in getting what they want and they want to know what’s up with Derek so send Sofia and Ash to follow him. Little do they know, Liam is already there... Before it’s all over the sex between Sofia and Derek is setting the pages on FIRE and I was turning them fast and furiously to find out what was going to happen next.

Where will they end up? Will they survive? Grab Midnight Revenge by Elle Kennedy to find out all the dark and dirty details regarding D Pratt!! ~ Heather, 5 stars

~~~
Blindsided by the feels….
I know that mercenaries, by nature, are probably not the warmest guys you are going to meet. They aren’t the type to spill their emotions over a cold beer or even twelve. Derek “D” Pratt, however, takes stone-cold to a whole new level. I honestly wasn’t sure who could make him open up, if anyone could, but Dr. Sofia Amaro might be up for the job.
This series has managed to bring something new to the table in every outing and this one is no exception. This is not a watered down version of what evil could lurk in the world but an eyes-wide-open look at the horrible things, the horrible people that prey on the innocent. Sex trafficking, the drug trade, and kidnappings are in a normal day’s work for some. Just knowing that what is in these pages is a representation of what really goes on, well, it’s almost too real, isn’t it?
Thank goodness others are tasked with stopping it. Though that comes with a price…
When good and evil collide the explosion is felt by the whole team and none more so than “D”. A loner, he doesn’t know what to do with true friendship and real love so he does without. Using silence and aloofness, he holds everyone at arm’s length until they won’t let him shut them out any more…
Sofia is the perfect person to get in his face and make him hear some home truths. She knows exactly where he is coming from and, though they had very different pasts, once they start to open up to each other, it’s easy to see how and why they click. The going isn’t easy, it’s really hard and very painful—heartbreaking at times—but their roller coaster was everything I could have hoped for. When Derek allows himself to take down his barriers and let Sofia in… Okay, some tissues may or may not have been needed.
“Using the word adorable in relation to this man hadn’t seemed possible, but right now, it was the only one to describe him. Adorable and awkward…”
To live or die is a question that is up for debate in each minute so to say their opportunity to sort things out is a baptism of fire is an understatement… Emotional, gritty, yet with moments of humor and sexual chemistry, this story is my new series favourite. I may have shed a few tears along but that’s okay… They were worth it!
An epilogue that broke my heart (again), I can’t wait for Liam and Sully’s story to continue… ~ Diane, 4.5 stars
Elle Kennedy takes a beloved series to another level with MIDNIGHT REVENGE.
The suspense is on point, the passion is intense and the sex is insane!
If you have to be locked in a cartel prison with anyone, hells to the YEAH would I pick Derek "D" Pratt. The man wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma...that is "D". I think that is why I have always loved "D", ever since MIDNIGHT ACTION (my first read..and then I went and read all the rest...like that week), he was sex on a stick with a bad attitude and a body that you just wanted to climb...no really, he is THAT HOT...and very much the guy that any girl would want to "Fix". You know those guys...except "D" didn't want to be fixed and he HATED that Sofia was the one woman who sparked something inside of him that he believed was LONG LONG DEAD.
Elle nailed it with this heroine. Sofia was the perfect balance for "D", and she didn't take any shit. She told it like it was, took him for who he was, and boy did they burn some sheets...HOLY SMOKES...Elle Kennedy knows how to write a sex scene! The banter (or foreplay) was almost as good as the real thing, the story line was excellent and so well thought out. This series is one of my favorite romantic suspense series because I get so engrossed in the story that I look up and BAM, three hours passed and I already want to read it again!
Opening up a Killer Instinct Romance is like hanging out with a group of my favorite people. And I swear, if we don't get a Sully/Liam romance...well....I might go crazy!! I was literally tearing up at the goodbye in Portugal....Elle...PLEASE DON'T MAKE ME SUFFER!
If you haven't begun the series yet....ok....you must buy them all. You won't be sorry!
DNF at 40%... but it really is just me. I prefer suspense stories in movie format. But to be honest, this wasn't very suspenseful. I admire EK's talent, but Robert Ludlum she is not.
I really like the MCs, especially D. And he stays true to character through the whole story. (Yes I did skim to the end... which was sweet btw).
But EVERYONE ELSE in the book got on my last nerve! Especially that Noelle chick. Either the characters weren't very bright, or they were a-holes (like Noelle).
So NO, I will not be returning to this series.
But I really did like D's character. Too bad it took them 6 years to discover they were interested in each other... What's up with that???
These books are like crack!
I have been waiting for what seems like FOREVER to get a chance to read D's book, and of course, Elle Kennedy did not disappoint.
As with the other books in this series, Midnight Revenge packed nail-biting suspense, captivating dialogue, page-melting sensuality, and an amazing plot that made me want to keep reading until the last page (and beyond).
I'm further convinced that Elle Kennedy can do no wrong.
I am eagerly anticipating the next book!
This romantic suspense had a really good story about finding and saving a member of the team. I knew it was going to take lots of work and someone special to break into the hero's heart. Lots of fast paced exciting action made this a very enjoyable book. Special Ops agent Derek brings his teammate to Dr Sofia and acts on his basic instinct with her.
If you read my review for Midnight Captive, you know how much I was looking forward to this book. Not as much because it was Derek's book (because he's really never been one of my favorites) but because I HAD TO KNOW what happened to Sully. I went into this book flat-out terrified about what would wind up happening to Sully and on the edge of my seat, hoping for the best.
I'm not entirely sure what I expected of Derek's backstory – and his present day – but it was so NOT what I got. I knew he was messed up in bad things before, but I had absolutely no idea what he'd been through in his past. My heart seriously broke for him. As tough as he was on the outside, I was surprised to get a chance to see a vulnerable side of him. I know I have Sofia to thank for that. I'm not sure anyone else would've brought that out of him. While I liked Sofia's strong and sassy self from the start, it took longer for me to fully embrace Derek. By about halfway through, I was a total convert who was loudly singing his praises.
While I didn't really go into this book for Derek's story, but for more about Sully and his connection with Liam, I have to say this is one of my favorite books in the series so far. It was unexpected. Plus, you know, I loved the characters. It wasn't an easy read though. Between the things Derek was offering up from his past, the danger he, Sofia and their unborn child were in and the awfulness of what happened with Sully, I had a fair few feels. This book was sexy and action-packed and I really enjoyed pretty much everything about it.
I'm just gonna say it... I need a Liam/Sully book. Like, stat. As long as this whole thing between them has been drug out, I NEED to see it all explode. I've shipped these two HARD. I demand a HEA for them... even if it takes some time to get there. I'd kinda hoped for a little more of them in this book, but it was definitely more about his capture and the fall out than this THING going on between them. I suspect Elle won't let me down and hope the next book, whenever it might be released, is their story and that it's worth all the wait.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
FAVORITE QUOTES:
His past choices, the mistakes he'd made... He didn't dwell on them, because regret was a waste of time. When he made a decision, he was fully prepared for the consequences. If he took a life, he made peace with the action before he even pulled the trigger. And once the deed was done, it was fucking done. No looking back. No moaning and griping and feeling bad about it. Guilt and regrets were for weak men who couldn't stomach the choices they'd made in their lives.
He was a cold bastard. Ruthless. Violent. He'd been that way since he was eight years old, and if he'd ever had the ability to feel compassion or tenderness, then it had been beaten out of him a long time ago.
She leaned in and brushed her lips over his, and he surprised himself by deepening the kiss before she could pull away. Greedy and demanding, shoving his tongue through her parted lips in a desperate thrust. He wanted to swallow her up, to fucking drown in her. He didn't understand it and he hated himself for his weakness, for this unexpected need she'd unleashed inside him. Not tension, not the carnal urge to empty his seed somewhere, but real, bone-deep need. For another person. For her.
Finally! The moment we’ve all been waiting for has arrived! Well… I don’t know about you guys, but I know I’ve been waiting for it. Derek Pratt, better known as D, is ready to tell his story and ohhhhhh my goodness, is it a good one! Definitely well worth the wait.
The 7th installment in Elle Kennedy’s captivating Killer Instincts series picks up right where Midnight Captive left off. Sullivan, a member of Jim Morgan’s black ops organization is missing due to a case of mistaken identity. When D finds out that the kidnappers were actually after him, he makes it his mission to right the wrongs, and find/free Sully. But as you can expect in the world of mercenaries, things don’t always go according to plan.
If you’ve been following the series then you know each book has resulted in the main character pairing off with somebody. I was curious to see if D’s story would be the same because of his strong personality. He’s not the easiest person to get along with, and only provides the bare minimum of details regarding his life and his past. So how can somebody like him, with such a tough exterior who keeps everyone at an arm’s length, let anybody get close enough to know the real him??
In my mind it was going to go one of two ways. Either his sudden change of heart would seem totally out of character, making it completely unbelievable OR Elle would absolutely nail the transition, and thawing of his heart as only she can. I’ll let you guess the outcome ;)
I do have to admit that Sofia was definitely the most irritating female lead in the series. There were many times I wanted to reach through my Kindle and shake her, but I refrained from causing my poor Paperwhite any harm. She does redeem herself a bit, but you can expect to have love/hate feelings about her. Nonetheless, her character seems to be the perfect fit for D, and I really can’t imagine anybody else filling her shoes.
As always, you can expect TONS of action, drama, suspense, espionage, and steamy passion. I do have to warn you though that Midnight Revenge is somewhat darker than the other books in the series. It’s totally fitting for D’s character that his past would be as chaotic and traumatizing as it was, so in my opinion there really was no way around it. It all had to go down exactly the way it did. There may be certain triggers that those who are sensitive to the mention of rape, human trafficking, etc. may take issue with. Read with caution.
I would HIGHLY recommend this entire series. Once you pick up Midnight Rescue (book 1) you will be hooked, and the next thing you know you’ll be binge reading through the next 6 books… like I did. Seriously though, you will NOT be able to put them down. The Killer Instincts series is by far one of the best Romantic Suspense series I have ever come across. Read it! Read them all! Now!
