One vote could end American democracy. And the man holding it has everything to lose. When a secret alliance of billionaires, political operatives, and powerful insiders exploit an obscure provision of the Constitution to reshape the American government, newly elected Ohio legislator Hannis Cleer has no idea he is about to become the most important man in the country.
A successful businessman and political newcomer, Hannis entered public office believing he could make a difference. Then a proposed constitutional amendment races through Congress and the states with terrifying speed—one designed to strip away America’s checks and balances and place unprecedented power in the hands of the president.
Now the entire scheme may come down to Ohio.
And Hannis’s vote.
The people behind the amendment have billions at their disposal, politicians under their control, and access to secrets capable of destroying almost anyone. Hannis has secrets of his own—and when persuasion turns to blackmail, threats, and intimidation, his career, his company, and his family are suddenly at risk.
Hannis must decide how much he is willing to sacrifice to stop a constitutional coup. Can one compromised man stand against a political machine prepared to destroy everything he loves to get his vote?
This is a gripping political thriller that explores power, corruption, and the high stakes of political decision-making. Author Swanson builds an intriguing premise around one man whose vote could change the course of an entire nation. I think this is a thought-provoking and suspenseful read for anyone who enjoys political thrillers filled with high stakes, moral dilemmas, and unexpected challenges.
This is a political thriller that focuses on Hannis Cleer, a newly elected Ohio legislator who becomes the deciding vote for or against a piece of legislation that could dramatically change the balance of power in America. As it becomes clear who is behind the legislation and what it would do, the reader begins to understand how much this single vote matters. What Cleer decides will reverberate for generations.
It’s sometimes difficult for authors to make political gamesmanship exciting, but this story’s writer does so admirably. The behind-the-scenes manipulation is fascinating to read about, and it’s very believable as well. As pressure is applied to Cleer, it’s easy to imagine a scenario like this one playing out in the real world, at least for readers who have a cynical nature.
A supposed political thriller, The Vote: A Story of Political Peril (2026) by David Swanson is set in current-day America. It’s a tale of a cabal planning to implement a vote to change the Constitution, thereby granting the President power for life. Although a fictional tale, it's somewhat controversial given the state of current American politics. Unfortunately, its interesting premise neglects to captivate the reader, or have sufficient character dynamism to make for a gripping drama. The narrative is a series of rather functional, time-dated scenes that fail to build any real tension or interest. Overall, it's a disappointing read with an indecisive ending that is only a two star read rating. As always, the opinions herein are totally my own, freely given and without any inducement.
The Vote takes a fascinating and unsettling look at what could happen when political ambition, enormous wealth, and institutional power converge. David Swanson builds his story around the Article V amendment process, turning a complex part of American government into the foundation for a compelling political thriller. The multiple storylines gradually connect as a larger conspiracy comes into focus, creating a growing sense of tension. Timely, this is a novel that encourages readers to look more closely at how power can be gained, and what can happen when safeguards are threatened.
A gripping political thriller, full of danger, greed, power, and corruption. I enjoyed the unexpected twist the book raises, important questions about democracy, and the people we trust to protect it.
Swanson's witty book can be dark at times and shows ideas that can be all too true. It’s a political thriller that lays out many threats to our democracy.
