One year ago the Event swept through the world and wiped out the entire adult population. Now all the children are alone and fending for themselves.

Everly Hilton can see ghosts. Bridging the gap between the living and the dead, there are so many departed adults she can barely handle her ability.

With winter approaching, Everly can’t fight the dead any longer. She has to listen to the ghosts in order to understand what caused the Event and help keep the children alive.

What she doesn’t realise is that her association with the spirits runs far closer to home than she could ever imagine.

About the author

Jamie Campbell

Jamie was born into a big, crazy family of 6 children. Being the youngest, she always got away with anything and would never shut up. Constantly letting her imagination run wild, her teachers were often frustrated when her ‘What I did on the weekend’ stories contained bunyips and princesses.

Growing up, Jamie did the sensible things and obtained a Bachelor of Business degree from Southern Cross University and worked hard to gain her membership with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia.

Yet nothing compared to writing. Quitting the rat race to spend quality time with her laptop named Lily, Jamie has written several novels and screenplays. Spanning a number of genres and mediums, Jamie writes whatever inspires her from ghost stories to teenage love stories to tantalising murder mysteries. Nothing is off limits.

A self-confessed television addict, dog lover, Taylor Swift fan, and ghost hunter, Jamie loves nothing more than the thrill of sharing her stories.

Having finally gotten around to reading one of my book purchases from #RWDU15 this march I have been reading this book on and off at bedtime this week, to be honest although it's a ghost story it's not the type to scare you, but reading an actual paperback was relaxing before I fell to sleep.

I hadn't realised it wasn't a standalone and I did feel that the story dragged on a little, only to be left with waiting for the next book to see if Everly will actually do something with her life.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the story, it kept me reading but it is slow going and not much really happens other than Everly getting into scrapes as she tries to go find her friend Oliver.

We are left with more questions than answers by the end of the book and the wonder of how on earth the world can get better when it's devolved into chaos and feral gangs of kids roaming around stealing and worse to those weaker than themselves.

This is the first book I have read from the Author, but I have some other sets to read that I bought on the day. Luckily one is a complete series, and I look forward to reading that set soon.

Didn't know this was a series when I started. Everly see the ghosts, Jet is a leader, Oliver the love of he life, and guess who comes calling? Can't tell, don't want to spoil! Now waiting on book two!

The bones are there for a great young adult urban fantasy, it just needs a great editor and a rewrite. But the plot and world building definitely deserve a thumbs up, as do the main male characters... where this book fails, unfortunately, is the heroine/protagonist (and whose POV the book is written in). Yes, she's a teenager so she's allowed to be dramatic, moody, whimsical, "instalove" struck, etc... But, unfortunately for the book (and the reader) these moods and fancies are written in an incomprehensible way. It's ok to have the teenager act like a teenager, but it just felt like a lot of her mercurial moods were less about her just acting like a teenager and more about pulling the story along.

Tl;dr: the bones for an amazing book/series are there, the male leads were written really well (they were more interesting than the heroine to be honest), the premise is really interesting -as is the world itself. The author writes well... BUT, it needs a great team of beta readers or an editor to fix the female protagonist.

I received this book from Goodreads.

The book is well written with good dialogue.

SPOILER:

All the Pretty Ghosts is the first book of a series. If you want a well developed story that provides descriptions as to how the city and characters became what and who they are then I would wait for the second book to come out and hopefully there will be some background description to round out the story.

This book has empathy, anger, fear, extreme bullying, loneliness and murder. The main character, Everly, was frustrating to the point I felt the book was hard to keep reading. I did persevere so I will probably read the second book just to see if the back story is revealed.
