It's a book that takes a while to get into, at least that was my experience; there are many travel scenes, and anyways it can feel slow at times. But once you are hooked, you can't put it down, especially during the final chapters. I need the next one already.
It all starts after Aly's sister fails to return home, and from there, we uncover a lot of mysteries surrounding her lack of powers and other matters.
Learning about the magic, the Mycellium, the realms and how they function, the stars, and the Offering event is incredibly entertaining. And I absolutely love books featuring plants, I'm more certain each time, since this one included some that were crucial to the plot and I was totally engrossed in it.
As for Zenn and Aly, whenever they were alone (which wasn't often, since there were always quite a lot of people around) it was just pure magic. The palpable tension between them, the yearning, the moments they just touched and I was already kicking my feet. I mean, what can I say? A slow burn romance, with a forbidden love at the same time, plus a man like Zenn...
"Worth the damn wait, and then some."
I have to say that my favourite character was Aven, a horse that "speaks", communicating telepathically with the main character. From the moment he first appeared, I wanted more of him and he never disappointed.
I'm also really intrigued by Varistia, I think she is gonna play a major role in the next book. Given her introduction and the little we learned about her in this one, I have high expectations.
Finally, that ending has me amazed, it was such a perfect one and at the same time really shocking, I didn't see those final plot twists coming at all. I'm so eager for more now; I have so many questions and doubts, I feel betrayed by some characters, yet I'm also looking forward to the rest of Aly's story, her journey toward learning about herself, self love and body confidence, as well as the path that lies ahead for her after uncovering so many mysteries.
I have to say I already have some theories about it, one of them related with a poem she sang, one that I don't think is just a poem, call me crazy.
"Three to build, three to break, three to set us free."
I also wanted to add some sentences I loved in the book, I tried to chose the ones without spoilers:
"Why is it that weak men get off on the idea of exerting power over women?"
"Swear on the stars, every time she calls you that, I feel like you're in trouble."
"When I tell you you're beautiful, you will listen. When I tell you your body is perfection, you. Will. Listen."

I enjoyed this! I will say, I wish there was something earlier on to really pull me in, but once I was in it, I was IN IT! The high stakes, the secrets, the tension. *chefs kiss* The back half of the book had me completely hooked.
Our FMC is relatable & complicated. The MMC is arrogant & duty bound. Their love is forbidden, but where will their hearts lead them? 😏 Idk that I’d classify this as a slow burn, but the flirty banter was fun & the moments shared were sweet as the momentum continued to build. I think on page, the slow part just wasn’t the burn. You know what I mean? 👀 No? Well, anywho—
I love Willa down, Aven is rightfully a star in this show for me & I loved Hendrix, too. Drea has my respect & Jeska … well … 🙃
I’m eager to see where all of these paths lead. Again, the stakes are high, everyone has secrets & the tension in the air is THICK!!! The pacing of most of the information roll out made sense by the end. The magic system with this one also seemed quite unique to anything I’ve read recently & that won a lot of points in my book. The path ahead is a web of secrets and lies, buried beneath a tangle of twisted roots and soil. I won't let fear be my guide, and I won't let comfort cover my eyes.
The first book in a planned romantasy series, Twisted Roots and Soil brings you all the good ol' fun of romantasy while also bringing in an inventive and unique magic system, vast and lush world-building, and an amazing cast of characters. (+ A snarky but lovable animal companion!)
Did he just tell me to relax? Stars give me strength. I'm not usually one for violence, but for him, I might just make an exception.
The first thing I noticed about this book was that it is told in single POV! I genuinely don't remember the last time I've read a romantasy book that was single POV, but AJ Charley does it sooo well! I usually love being in different characters' heads, but I feel like opting for just one perspective here has added so much tension. We learn about things just as our main character learns them, and it helped me connect with Alyxia so much more as a character! (It also gives Zenn a sorta mysterious vibe at first haha) I loved that Alyxia isn't the usual kickass FMC with crazy powers (though she's still a baddie in her own way!) but also doesn't exactly fall into the "timid soft girl" category. She speaks her mind and stands her ground when needed, and I love that about her! (I also thought the bonus chapter in Zenn's POV was such a nice touch because we finally get to be in his head for once haha!!)

Personally I feel like the book started off a little slow. While Alyxia is a fun character to follow and I think her internal monologue makes even the slower parts more engaging than they otherwise would've been, I definitely found myself wishing things would progress just a little quicker. But once the book reached around chapter 15 and our characters started their adventure, I became immediately sucked into the world! The last 50 pages in particular were SOO good. The pacing was delectable, and we got so many things happening in every chapter!

AJ Charley is a master at writing characters! Even though, as I mentioned, it was only single POV, I feel like we were able to get to know the personalities and dynamics of the travelling group so well, and it is sooo impressive because we follow like 10 characters in total for a large part of the book!! I found myself really attached to the cast by the end and cannot wait to keep following them in the next installments. (I really liked Hendrix in particular haha he has my heart, he was so funny! And of course Aven too!!)

The romance was scrumptious as well! You'll know the tension will be top notch since it's a forbidden romance haha! The chemistry between Alyxia and Zenn was crazy, and they were so sweet to each other as well! And I loveddd that for once the banter felt like actual banter and not "a battle of insults" disguised as playful flirting! Seriously, he makes her coffee every morning and secretly swaps out her bedroll for a good one so she can sleep better at night??? Come onnnn... (+ He has a filthy tongue, so if anyone enjoys that... Well... Look no further haha)
"We can't be anything."
"I know."
"Then why does it feel like we already are?"
And what is a good romantasy book without the "WHAT THE FREAK" moments? Honestly, I usually pride myself on being able to see them coming, but the ones in this book seriously caught me so off guard. There was one particular scene (iykyk) where I had to just put my Kindle down and blankly stare at the wall for a good 3 minutes because I was just so stunned...
Goddess have mercy, I never stood a chance.
"I couldn't deprive you of the pleasure of my company, Reyaal. I'm not that cruel."
Overall this was sooo much fun and I can definitely see myself continuing this series!! (I'm so very patiently waiting for book two ahhhh)

Normally in my reviews, this is where I'd put a favorite line from the story. Instead I feel like I need to ask a question: What did I just read?!? And I mean that in all of the most delicious, enticing ways. This book has altered my brain chemistry.

Alyxia is a noble lady who failed the ritual to give her magic, has to hide that she has none or be shunned forever. Her sister and High Sage are the only people who know. When her sister flees the Realm with little explanation, Aly makes the choice to leave the comforts of home and set out to find her sister. She is joined by her two best friends. Unfortunately their older brother, Zenn, who has the first 5☆ magic in centuries, finds them and gives them the ultimatum to go on a mission into the mountains with his team or go home. Aly must figure out how to get to her sister and no be discovered having no magic.
"You," I rasp. "Because of you, for you, only you."
This book has everything you need in a romantasy and more. It is beautifully written and descriptive in delectable ways. The world building is incredibly immersive, done in a way that engages all of your senses as you read. The characters are diverse and all described in such detail that you can imagine everything that makes them unique and envision exactly what they look like. And not just the main characters. The side characters, as well as some of the animals, all have spunk and liveliness that adds to the experience. I love the snarky banter, even between animals and people. There's also love interests that are forbidden, but provide all the tension you can crave. And that man... hot springs, coffee, masquerade and adornment... my gods!

Neither will anyone who chooses to read this book. Their are twists and turns, magic and mystery, love and hate, and the gambit of everything in between. The last 40 pages are exactly the way you want for the ending of the first book in a series. This is a 5☆ read that everyone should read!

I actually don’t know where to start with my thoughts.
This was a little bit of a slow start for me but once I hit about 20% it was game over I was so hooked. There’s many themes to this book that I resonate with deeply and it hit some pretty raw spots for me. I cried on multiple occasions. 🥹
I literally see so much of my past self in Aly. From the way she views herself, to the way she gets into her head and all she can think about is what horrible stuff was said to her to make her feel that way. I truly loved seeing at the end her getting that steel spine but bby I just know she’s going to eat tf down in book 2.🤏🏼
Zenn Zenn Zenn… have I got some words. 👀 I will say I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE the way he hypes our girl Aly up that had me grinning and giggling and reminding me of my mans so naturally I fell in love with this character.
And how absolutely diabolical to have me fall in love with the rest of the characters.. well…. maybe not Jes😵💫 she’s an acquired taste. & THEN have everything happen that happened. Wanna know what really made me sob. Aly looking at those portraits like come onnnnn😭😭😭 not to say I’m picking a favorite character but it has to Aven his rebuttals to Aly had me cracking up the whole time.
I’m not over the ending whatsoever. That’s cliffhanger was kinda rude. Of all places to be left off. That was the perfect place honestly but man the amount of questions I have.

I absolutely devoured this one. Right from the start this pulled me in and kept me intrigued throughout. The world building was amazing. So richly detailed, it felt like I was right there the entire time. The characters were strong and so well developed. They definitely brought this story to life and made everything feel so real. I was loving the journey and the twists and turns that came with it. And when I reached the last few chapters, omg, it just blew up into this wondrous thing and ended!!! I need the next one now lol.

This book has it all: a unique magic system, an epic quest, and a mystery to solve.
The banter is on point, there is a sassy MF horse, one of the most relatable FMCs for me I have read, an MMC that has no business being as hot as he is (and the purveyor of a new fave microtrope) and a last line that slaps so hard your ancestors will feel it.

Firstly Aly our FMC is super lovable and relatable the way she struggels with feeling inadequate due to her thoughts about her body (something her controlling overbaring mother playes a massive roll in creating). This leads to a lot of insecurities and poor self esteem,add to it the fact that as the story progress she finds out she has been lied to and munipilated for the past 8 years or maybe even longer does not help her.
Our MMC Zenn is such a hero for how he builds her confidence but she is however much more resilient and stronger than she gives herself credit for.
I love her witty, sassy attitude especially towards our mmc this gives us amazing banter and some top tier flirting. The slowburn tension sizzles and its so good i was both shouting at them to kiss but also not to because i loved the tension so much.
Of course one of my favorite characters is the older wise but so very snarky animal companion. He steals the show and for now rest of the gang/side characters i love/hate 🤣 them so will revisit my opinion after next books!
The magic elements are not only intresting and a unique twist on plant magic but i think in the next book we will get a better understanding of the extend and possibilties of it after the clues and hints we got which leads me to believe that we are just scratching the surface of whats to come!

Also love that the stakes are high between our MC’s because if their blood touches it will be beyond determental to them both....
The adveture quest they go on takes place in a vivd descriptive world and i was holding my breath with them when they were crossing around on a narrow pathway around a snowing mountain top AJ describes everything with the perfect balance that makes it so easy to imagine without being over descriptive.
I am beyond excited to continue the story and find out the deeper secrets and magic and lore also who is more involved than they let on.
I know there was a lot of easter eggs that seems to be mention for one thing but i think personally there is a lot of meaning and reasoning for things happening so already excited for reread after the next books to pick them out and see which of my theories are correct!
Special mention to that ending it had my jaw dropped and i had to go yell at the author because i did not see it coming, and still dont know how to feel about it since i was equally devasted and excited for what it means!

Also love that the stakes are high between our MC’s because if their blood touches it will be beyond determental to them both....
The adveture quest they go on takes place in a vivd descriptive world and i was holding my breath with them when they were crossing around on a narrow pathway around a snowing mountain top AJ describes everything with the perfect balance that makes it so easy to imagine without being over descriptive.
I am beyond excited to continue the story and find out the deeper secrets and magic and lore also who is more involved than they let on.
I know there was a lot of easter eggs that seems to be mention for one thing but i think personally there is a lot of meaning and reasoning for things happening so already excited for reread after the next books to pick them out and see which of my theories are correct!
Special mention to that ending it had my jaw dropped and i had to go yell at the author because i did not see it coming, and still dont know how to feel about it since i was equally devasted and excited for what it means!

This was such a good book. I flew through this one. I was hooked pretty quickly. This book was so easy to read and immerse yourself in.
The FMC Alyxia was such a relatable character. She wasn't perfect, she had secrets. But she was insecure, stubborn, sassy and caring. She wanted to help people even if that was frowned upon. Her life changed pretty quickly, and she found herself on a quest to locate a loved one, so many truths were uncovered, tragedy struck and bonds were formed.
Along on the quest was our MMC Commander Cayzenn, he is a walking green flag and I loved him. He is brave, loyal, caring, protective and cheeky. And his banter is top notch. And he can make a girl blush 😉
The character growth for both these characters was outstanding. Especially Aly.
The tension and yearning in this book 🥵🔥🔥 Love tension filled training scenes between MC's. Spicy scenes were spicy and delicious.

The plot was plotting away the entire time feeding us little scraps of information to keep us guessing. Holy moly there were some plot twists and reveals in this book that will have your head spinning. 🤯
The writing was so easy to follow and you're able to immerse yourself fully in this book, and very easily picture everything. Loved all the different locations they travel through on their journey. We got some hectic action scenes with really high stakes. We got different magical creatures that added to the suspense in certain parts of the book.
Loved the captivating worldbuilding and the magic system in this book, very unique and interesting. Really loved the Amplifier's, I found them so fascinating.
So many fantastic side characters in this book. We got some big personalities that really added to the book. You can't help but root for them to succeed.
That ending.. ruined me...🥺 my heart 💔 What a cliff hanger!!
Cant wait for the next one.

Wow! I went into this one a little more blind than I typically am when it comes to ARCs, but I remember initially being pulled in to sign up after seeing a few tropes and also the cover and it DID NOT disappoint!
When I say I love reading romantasy, this is the balance between the fantasy and the romance that I’m looking for. There’s a trial, different realms, different types of magic of course, questing, a bit of a mystery aspect involving our FMC’s sister, and then there’s also Aly (FMC) gaining more confidence in herself. There’s a fun, tension-filled forbidden love (well, maybe starts a bit more as forbidden attraction but of course with some good forced proximity and other circumstances that develops more!).
Both the FMC and MMC have things they’re not telling the other, but they both know that, at least to an extent.
To me, Aly seems like the perfect blend of both tough and soft for an FMC, especially later in this book/as she has some character growth. She might be a little naive at first, but quickly learns to adapt and do what needs to be done in order to get where she’s needing to go. She not a strong fighter and wasn’t previously trained, but she does work on that (with the help of others, like our MMC Zenn of course 😉) just to at least make sure she isn’t fully defenseless (and also a liability to others in the group if something were to happen). I also loved seeing both her insecurities with her body on the page and also her working through those thoughts (or Zenn helping her through them as well). It was a great balance of recognizing the insecurities (and where they’re stemming from) while not letting them control things.
Also, the animal companion!! How could I nearly forget about him and his sometimes snarky tone?? He’s a magical horse and yes, they talk to each other in their minds!
I might not be the happiest with AJ right now (you know what you did 😒), but I will definitely be following along for updates on the next book! And for any art there might be because I’m always a sucker for some good art 😍

Overall -- I found this story be a fantastic debut romantasy novel. I think if you are a real romantasy lover where you want similar ratio of plot to romance this is a solid read. It is definitely a slow burn, with the tension between the 2 characters building throughout the first half of the novel.
There were areas that fell a little flat for me, but overall this book was a pleasure to read and I will certainly be picking up book 2.

💕 Romance Chemistry 15% 4 -- Good -- I will say the start to the romance was a little loose for me. As I was reading it, the MMC's introduction seemed a little forced as it was written when I later found out the MMC was the FMC's best friends' brother. So I was like... oh so he's the brother? So I guess the overall start of their chemestry was a little akward for me, but the plot started moving I really enjoyed their dynamics and thought they had good romantic chemistry.
🌍 World-Building 15% 3 -- Solid -- It was a little superficial for me, but it works with the overall storyline so no issues there.
🎭 Character Development 10% 3 -- Solid -- I enjoyed the secondary characters and thought they could've been developed a bit more.

So Alyxia who comes from one of the “foundation families” has little to no power. She wears a ring that her sister enchants so she can do magic. Alyxia goes to the grotto where her sister usually is, but she’s not there. Instead she runs into The Sage and tells Alyxia her sister left, but didn’t tell anybody why. She kind of gives her what I think sounds like a prophecy. So we’ll see how that plays out.
Gold blooded people can’t be together or get married to other gold blooded people, because even one touch of their blood can take away someone‘s magic.
Zenn and Aly are absolutely cute. I love their banter. They make me laugh. Zenn is I think a green flag MMC. He’s so sweet and thoughtful and caring. I absolutely adore him. Aly is also such a great character. She goes to any lengths to make sure her friends are okay. She’s headstrong, but that’s one of her qualities that you will love.
I didn’t know exactly where this story was going, but the twists and turns surprised and delighted me.
I loved the dynamics of the different characters. They each have very different personalities, but they compliment each other extremely well.
This was a slow, slow burn. When it started though it was blazing, and I was here for it. I’m pretty sure I highlighted almost 1/2 or more of one chapter. I loved it so much, that I wanted to find it easily again.
I just finished, and let me tell you if you love yourself some emotional damage this book will give it to you! I can’t believe this reading journey is over, because it was very, very good.
After that cliffhanger, I don’t know how I’m going to wait for the next book.

Wow, this book was amazing! I don't even know where to start. Alyixia the FMC is dealing with body and self esteem issues thanks to her overbearing crappy parents. She failed her coming of age ritual because she was expected to be something she really isn't, and subsequently has no magic. She'll be forced into a loveless marriage with a jerk who is already openly being a dick to her. It's really a crappy situation all around. Her sister disappears off to another realm so Aly decides to go after her. She enlists her two best friends and they sneak off. On the road they run into her best friends older brother who insists they go back immediately or tag along with his squad into the mountains. Aly is on a time limit set by her sister. The trek into the mountains is difficult and dangerous even for the trained Shields of Cayzenns squad so Aly must train with them. A lot happens in this book, this is such a brief overview, I don't know how to describe it without spoiling anything. Before she leaves Aly is given key clues and tools to find a path that allows faster travel through the realms. She also Attunes to an Amplifier horse named Aven. She's not a shield so she shouldn't have been able to do that, but they bond. These Amplifier horses also have magic and once bonded they can mind speak. Aven is hilarious. He's irreverent and gives 0 craps about the supposed rules. He chose Aly and is great for her with all his sarcastic motivation. He might be my favorite character in the book. The spice in this book is hot and there's a good amount of it. There's so much more going on in these realms. There's essentially an evil plot afoot and this ends on a cliffhanger. I can not wait for the next book. This was so freeking good, it had me hooked from the beginning and totally locking in throughout. Well, crap. I love reading ARCs. (I received this as an ARC.) I love finding new books, new stories and new authors.
I hate knowing that I will now have to wait an undetermined amount of time before I get book 2 of this unexpectedly wonderful series. :)
This was utterly delightful, with incredible world-building and a unique magic system. Our FMC is neither the world's best assassin, nor is she even a fighter. And the idea of sleeping on the ground is like her worst nightmare. She was so absolutely refreshing in what is fast becoming an overdone trope in this genre and made it so easy for me to see myself in her.
The MMC has green flag written all over him, and as his obsession with Aly starts to clash with his orders, and hell, even the very state of his power, you can feel him trying to navigate a path forward that won't involve breaking his vows as a Shield or Aly's heart.
Plus, he's hot as hell, and the spice is delicious and satisfying.
But the best part of this book? Aven, Aly's horse. He says everything that I was thinking, like, "Hey, maybe we should actually talk about and consider thinking about that mysterious voice who spoke to you?" And "It's about time" when Aly finally decides to reach out to communicate with someone who dropped some pretty intense information on her. Aven's commentary turns every decision Aly makes that would otherwise drive me crazy into one that made me cackle.
I could definitely have used a glossary about terms, and maybe a bit more world history, since this world is very complex, and while I gathered a whole bunch of information as I read, I still felt a bit like I was just letting the story carry me, hoping I'd understand better down the line.
I will absolutely be ready for any news about book 2, because that ending? OUCH.

If you’re looking at this gorgeous stained glass cover art thinking it will be a story of frolicking and whimsy, you’d be disappointed. In the best way. Certainly no frolicking, but absolutely a rebellious, adventurous quest! And the only whimsy you’ll find is the fact that there’s magic! The story had excellent forward momentum. The characters very well developed, especially Alyxia and her body dysmorphia. Which, let’s face it, is something every single one of us can relate to, so, very easy to connect with her story. And the arrogant Cayzenn, sexy, from the very first interaction. Like, yea, he’s powerful, the most powerful wielder the kingdom of Atafye has seen, and he knows it, also that he’s drop dead gorgeous. But not arrogant in a gross, off-putting way.
Atafye starts seeing a strange phenomena in seemingly random places, desiccated white patches of land that turn anything touching it to ash in seconds, and it is spreading. Alyxia learns that her sister may have uncovered information about the plague on the land but has inexplicably chosen to leave her golden life in their realm. So, the obvious choice is to trek across the realm and find her. Without magic. So. Not ideal. Doing it anyway. With, or without, the help of the very unwelcome and unexpected run-in with the infamous Cayzenn. Their detour proves trying, to say the least, but helps our heroine uncover secrets and truths she would have never discovered without it.
The tension, the banter, the spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️, top tier! Connections with multiple characters, no matter how brief, are impactful and feel real. Easy to read and imagine. So I started this book thinking I was getting a fun little fantasy read. Nothing too incredibly high stakes. Sure, there were some emotional moments, but nothing my black little heart couldn't handle.
And then...
BAM!
Those last couple of chapters hit and I was sitting there going, WTF?!?
Now that I got that off my chest, let's talk about the actual book.
This was such a well written story. The writing is engaging and detailed without becoming so much that the story gets bogged down. Quite the opposite, actually. This was one of those books that was really hard to put down because I needed to know what was going to happen next.
The world is not exactly friendly. In fact, it's kind of horrible. Aly is stuck in a world where people seem to care about little more than appearances and her womb. She has a secret, a missing sister, and very few options.
Enter Zenn, an off-limits Commander who might be able to help her find her missing sister.
Add in a couple of dangerous side quests, smart-aleck sidekicks, and a sassy horse who absolutely does not keep his opinions to himself, and you have yourself an amazing five star read.
This book is packed with secrets and little tidbits of information that kept me questioning things and turning the pages. Every time I thought I had an idea of where the story was going, there was another little piece of information to keep me guessing.
And then we get to that ending.
THAT ENDING KILLED ME.
I was absolutely not prepared for those last few chapters.
I need to know when the next book is coming out because I need to put it on my calendar now. I need to make sure nothing else is going on that day so I can sit down and focus entirely on reading it.
Five stars.

The world is not exactly friendly. In fact, it's kind of horrible. Aly is stuck in a world where people seem to care about little more than appearances and her womb. She has a secret, a missing sister, and very few options.
Enter Zenn, an off-limits Commander who might be able to help her find her missing sister.
Add in a couple of dangerous side quests, smart-aleck sidekicks, and a sassy horse who absolutely does not keep his opinions to himself, and you have yourself an amazing five star read.
This book is packed with secrets and little tidbits of information that kept me questioning things and turning the pages. Every time I thought I had an idea of where the story was going, there was another little piece of information to keep me guessing.
And then we get to that ending.
THAT ENDING KILLED ME.
I was absolutely not prepared for those last few chapters.
I need to know when the next book is coming out because I need to put it on my calendar now. I need to make sure nothing else is going on that day so I can sit down and focus entirely on reading it.
Five stars.

Omg that ending??? A betrayal, secrets being unraveled and the final hint about what might truly be going on in the kingdom! I am waiting on bated breath for the next book!
You follow the FMC Aly, who’s blood and family legacy make her important, but when she was finally able to get her own magic years ago, instead of getting multiple stars worth of power on her chest in the form of a tattoo, was not given any of the healing magic she wanted and has spent the past few years claiming to be a basic one star to hide her secret. When her sister suddenly disappears without any clear reason as to why, she decides to try to find her and learn what secret she is hiding that she would leave her life behind for. But when her and her friends are heading out, they run into Zenn and his group who are out on a mission of their own and don’t believe her cover story and force her to either head home or go with them on their mission and promise to escort her to her fake destination.
I loved the mix of adventures, training sequences and sassy banter that this book contained, especially the sass coming from their bonded. There was plenty of action, uncovering of secrets, life and death situations and burning heat between the main two characters that had me constantly flipping to the next page! I also felt very connected to the FMC with how hard she takes living up to her families expectations when she was not gifted her own powers and her struggles with mental health and her own personal body image. It’s awesome seeing her slowly coming into herself with more training and magic and I can’t wait to see her continue to grow! Overall my rating 4.7/5!

Y’all!! THISSSS BOOK!! If you like your romantasy HIGH on the fantasy but absolutely NOT lacking in the romance, STOP RIGHT HERE- you’re gonna want to read this one!

I DEVOURED this book. The worldbuilding was rich and so detailed! From picturing the realms to understanding the different magic systems, no detail was spared. Everything felt naturally woven into the story, and I never felt overwhelmed. I actually found myself wanting more.
AJ Charley has a way of hooking you. Just as soon as you think your questions are being answered, something else happens, leaving you with even more questions! There was never really a good stopping point because I constantly felt I needed to know what would happen next.
As for the characters, they were so well developed! You really feel like you get to know them until you get closer to the end and realize you might not know them as well as you thought. Aven is hands down my favorite character!! His personality added so much to the story, and I NEED more of him. Since the story is told from Alyxia’s POV, you are experiencing everything right along with her. You only know what she knows, so when those plot twists hit, THEY HIT. (IYKYK).
And I can’t finish this review without giving mad props to AJ Charley for writing some delicious tension and yearning and then hitting you with just the right amount of spice that will have you clutching your pearls. Twisted Roots and Soil has EASILY become one of my top reads of 2026! I will definitely be continuing this series!!

Hiding the fact that you have no magic? No big deal. Finding your sister? That might be a little more difficult. Twisted Roots and Soil by AJ Charley is so good I wish I could read it again. Right now. Or in 5 minutes once I’ve recovered enough to form actual sentences.
The magic system in this world is so cool. I can’t wait to learn even more in book 2. The world building is great and really paints the picture without being too heavy or difficult to follow.
I fell in love with these characters so hard. Aly is one of the most real FMCs I’ve ever read. She is witty, scared, fierce, and still learning. She doesn’t become a goddess overnight. In fact she’s still got a lot to learn. Zenn…oh Zenn I absolutely fell head over heels for this fictional man. He supports Aly and gives her exactly what she needs. And their BANTER! So good!
By far the best character is Aly’s horse. Imagine if you took Maximus from Tangled, made him magical, and he formed a bond with Rapunzel and they could speak telepathically. That would be Aly and Aven! Their relationship was my favorite part of the book.
I absolutely loved this book so much. It was incredibly addictive and definitely a page turner. I would constantly think one more chapter and the next thing I would know I would be halfway through the next one. AND THAT ENDING?!? I don’t know how I’m supposed to recover! Usually, I know after the first few pages if I'll enjoy a book. This one was an early winner for me. I ended up reading it in one sitting, and it was one of the best romantasy books I've read recently. It gave me everything I was looking for and more.
Alyxia was a character I instantly fell in love with. For years, she felt like a misfit, trying to find her place in the world. She was fighting to hold on to pieces of herself while also trying to meet everyone's expectations. One day, everything changes in an instant when she puts herself and the search for her sister first. This sets off a chain reaction of events that takes her on a wild ride.
This was one of the best character arcs I have had the pleasure of following in a long time. Watching her grow from someone who constantly held herself back and doubted her worth into the strong and capable person she always had the potential to be was something truly special.
And then we have Zelindyr. He was a character I was sceptical about initially, but I gradually started to fall in love with him, and the chemistry between the two of them was absolutely on fire.
There are so many great things about this book that made it an instant favourite for me, and I could go on and on about them. This is one I urge you to pick up. Now!
The overall writing was perfection. It was easy to follow, giving me exactly the right amount of world-building and complexity. As more layers were added throughout the story, the world only became more intriguing, and the ending in particular left me excited for what comes next.

This is what I say I love when I think of romantasy. This first book in the poison gold series definitely took me by surprise and I just know this author is going to find so many more romantasy readers to fall in love with this story.
I really enjoy the concept behind this romantasy. When the concept of blood color can either save or hurt you, that’s what immediately caught my attention. When our FMC failed to gain power, I could just tell that we were going to embark on a journey together. Add in a forbidden connection with the most powerful commander and you have me hooked! The characters were really well written and I loved getting to know them and seeing how they continued to get closer the more time they spent together.
I also felt that the world building was amazing. When I’m in a romantasy, the world is just as important as the characters to me. So when I was reading and I was able to easily picture the world that Alyxia and Cayzenn were in just made it that much more fun and immersive for me. Being able to escape into this world was very much needed and I’m glad I had the opportunity to check it out before release day.
There is so much more to this story and I can’t wait to see how it continues. If you like magic, forbidden attraction, quests, beautiful world building and an amazing cast of characters, then this romantasy will be for you!

After a failed ritual ripped away her chance at magical powers, only the color of Alyxia's blood spared her. But her failure must remain hidden. When her sister mysteriously disappears, she decides to go find her with the help of some friends. She didn't anticipate Cayzenn joining their quest though, the most powerful Wielder their world has ever seen. And very dangerous to be around, one drop of her blood mixing with his and he loses every bit of power he has.
Twisted Roots and Soil was an OK book for me. On probably every front. The plot was descend, but not brilliant or surprising. The main characters were nice, but I'm not highly invested in them. The writing was fine, but I feel there were loose ends and it wasn't engaging enough for me to want to keep reading.
There are some really cool elements to the story though, using a mycelium network to travel between realms was a great idea. But then again, I wish it was explained better. I never really got a good visual of what that would look like. It just sounded like tunnels with a conveyor belt type situation going on (?) and so much more could have been done with that.
I did love that the author made our fmc a person with real life struggles. She struggles with her body, because she was always told she wasn't good enough. She has a lot of doubts and insecurities. And those don't magically disappear because some random dude tells her she is beautiful.
Another highlight was Aven, who is Alyxia's horse. And he has some opinions! He is sarcastic, funny, snarky, sassy, I wanted more of him to be fair.
So all in all, I don't think I will be continuing this series. It wasn't like I didn't enjoy myself, but there was just not enough there to make me want to continue.

What an absolutely incredible debut by AJ Charley.
This book had me in such grip, I flew through it in only a couple of days. The world building was done really well, there is a unique but digestible magic system that gets explained as you read. But I know there is still so much to be explored as the series continues.
What I liked: I loved the FMC, Aly, she was so relatable as a character that there were times I had to pause reading just to process. She has flaws and insecurities and it just made me like her so much more. And her path around magic is really interesting and I can’t wait to see it develop further.
I also loved Zenn, he’s such a green flag, he might just be my new favourite book boyfriend. His character was so thoughtful and caring towards Aly and really understood what she needed to feel safe and meets that for her. Absolute perfection.
The supporting characters were fantastic and worked well with the story and gave more depth to the relationships with the MCs and to the story in general. And don’t forget our sassy animal companion, this is one of my favourite tropes and this character doesn’t disappoint!
What I disliked: My only dislike is how long I’ll have to wait for the next book after that ending!
I can’t wait to see how this series will progress and I’m excited to see my favourite characters again.

This book had me in such grip, I flew through it in only a couple of days. The world building was done really well, there is a unique but digestible magic system that gets explained as you read. But I know there is still so much to be explored as the series continues.
