William W. Johnstone's epic westerns brilliantly pit the courage of a man alone against the rugged landscape of frontier America. Weaving actual historical characters and events with hoof-pounding suspense, Johnstone's new Frank Morgan adventure finds the West's last gunfighter facing his toughest enemy yet.

Death Is Not The End--Sometimes It's Just The Beginning

When Frank Morgan finds there's a price on his head, there's only one thing to do--kill the man who put it there--and if he avenges the death of his beloved doing so, the sweeter the justice. But the trail of revenge hides many an ambush. From hired killers to hooded night riders, there's no rest for the last gunfighter, especially when a beautiful young trick rider needs his help. Guns blazing, the dust never settling, vengeance comes to a showdown in a Nevada ghost town, where an army of gunmen lies in wait. . .

There's a bounty on his head, so The Last Gunfighter is taking a train to Boston to confront the payer. The train gets hijacked, so he decides to ride his horse all the way back. Of course, he is soon embroiled in a shooting match that has nothing to do with his actual goal of getting to Boston. Guess he isn't in much of a hurry.

I like this entire series. Frank determines that he must go east to kill Charles Dutton, whom he blames for his wife's death. There are several episodes along his train travels, including helping farmers save their town of Elysium, saving a girl from the clutches of an unwelcome suitor during a visit to Bill Cody's wild west show, and escaping several tries on his life from Dutton's henchmen. A little surprise as to the end of Mr. Dutton and so Frank heads west again, only to end up in the old Nevada ghost town of Buckskin where he actually takes a job as marshal ... and I guess we'll have to read the next book to see how that goes.

Frank is trying to get to Boston but keeps getting waylaid by various adventures. More like interconnected short stories rather than one singular story, but pretty fun nonetheless.

What really bothered me about this book was this: It says WILLIAM W. JOHNSTONE, in large caps across the title page. If you read the fine print, you see that it says "with J.A. Johnstone, and also that it was written after William's death. That deception irritates me to no end!
This ruse is being carried on with several authors, who have passed on.
Having said that, this book was actually not bad! (I know, but I had to vent) It was standard western fare, and pretty well written. I may not read any more "fake" Johnstones, however, preferring the genuine article!

I have read a gob of this author's work and his books just keep getting better (if that's possible). The Avenger is repleat with the fascinating the exploits of Frank Morgan. Now the Sheriff of Buckskin, I am looking g forward to more exciting stories. You western fans will surely enjoy this book. So, "Giddy Up.

24-63. Another great Frank Morgan adventure. So much going on in the story. I am enjoying how Johnstone is portraying the passage of time while keeping true to the characters. I borrowed this e-book from the Sacramento Public Library through the Libby app.

Outstanding!

This is a very good story of how good wins over evil and how desperate the battle is at times. This the best of classic western writing.

This was the first William W. Johnstone book that I have read. Though this one happens to not been written by him. I liked the character and the book was good enough to make me want to read more of the Last Gunfighter books.

This was exciting book. Frank Morgan gets to beat all odds, meets an idol of his, and manages to defy long odds. My kind of gunfighter!
