Very much enjoyed PHM. Fun sci-fi with a good dose of real-world science and heart. A buddy comedy, with the fate of two worlds at stake. Plot kept me guessing about what would happen next. Doesn't take itself too seriously but at times I found myself thinking about how we view ourselves as a people. How different things might be down here, if we all had the view from up there. Would recommend for anybody looking for a good time in outerspace. Stratt for president.

will admit this book was a little out of my wheelhouse. It was written so well and detailed - which is why I was so disappointed by the ending. I had way too many questions after finishing - would have given this a solid 4, but would now say 3.5.

A reread made me like this more. A phenomenal audio book! Still a bit clunky but worth a reread for book club.

wow, I haven't read as many books that suck you in so quickly, present such intense problems and force creative solutions. The relationships and sacrifices in this book are beautiful. the in depth sci Fi feels real enough to believe and very few moments broke me out of the story and back to reality.

Although I'm generally not drawn to Science Fiction, I really enjoyed this book. I liked the main character's role of highly intelligent PHD molecular Biologist turned middle school science teacher. He is selected and "highly encouraged" by four a high powered project manager (and four FBI Agents) to be one of the leading astronauts for Project Hail Mary. This Project could make or break the future of our planet Earth.

The subject of the novel has potential for having a serious tone. However, Ryland Grace's character is able to see things through a great sense of humor, which helps keep it entertaining. I also appreciate the author's science knowledge as I was able to enjoy understanding some of the scientific reasoning for the decisions throughout the story. In fact, it kept me as engaged as the humor did.

I listened to the audio book and I don’t know if it was just the narrator that annoyed me but all of the dialogue seemed forced and unnatural. At times very cringy. I think the story itself is pretty good and I love the idea behind it. It seemed like he really did his homework. I really liked how logical and scientific it all seemed even if most of it was nonsense. It’s a good book, the dialogue just lacks for me.

When I started this book I thought it could be a really boring read, I was so wrong, it was a can't put it down book. I listened to the audio version, really enjoyed the narrator, Ray Porter. It was interesting, eventful, suspenseful and the ending was not what I expected. Highly recommend this book.

Great hard fiction that has a lot of scientific principals driving the narrative. The main character Rowland Grace, an exacedamic, but now middle school science teacher, is chosen as the head scientist trying to understand an unthinking extraterrestrial threat to humanity. This book follows Rowland on an interstellar journey to save Earth at another solar system. All the while, he is regaining his memories after several years in a medically induced coma, waking up when his destination nears. The ending of the book really makes you question, if you have everything you need to be happy does it matter where you are or who you are with?

One positive about the book: great science and the authors onderstanding of all areas of STEM enhance the plot.

One negative about the book: Rowlands and Rocky's character could have been better developed because their personal feelings don't drive the plot and we don't get to know who they are as much as what they do.

Normally I'd give up on a book like this around page 50. The font size and the line spacing are much too small. Readable, but tiring.

There are a lot of improbables, but this is fiction and we want an interesting tale. So OK.

Lots of thought- provoking speculations. I like the one about the origins of life on planets. Could even be true.

Maybe I missed something, but the story seems to be set in the near future. I think we are a fair way off from building a star ship. I guess I don't really care about that and I'm not too bothered whether the science and engineering might not be quite right.

Liked Grace and Rocky, and I liked the ending.

I don't do a lot of 5 star ratings. But 5 for this because it raises some challenging ideas about our place in the universe. Concepts that I'll probably think about for a while.

The movie? I won't be watching it, because I'm sure it won't do justice to the book.

I absolutely loved it. I’m not used to really reading fiction but this was attention grabbing and kept me immersed for long periods of time. With that being said, the ending wasn’t what I had hoped for.


When Grace is choosing to go to Erid or Earth, I wish he would’ve chosen to go to Earth. All the flashbacks had me invested in his life at home and Erid was not of much interest to me. There were so many things I wish we learned (i.e the political climate on Earth, how many people died, if his students were okay, etc.) but we simply won’t know. Now, Grace is old and doesn’t seem interested in going back, in fact he is invested in a new life on Erid. This is kind of a disappointment in my mind.

Other than that, the book was absolutely fantastic. My only complaint is based off the fact that I was so interested in this book. 10/10 would recommend.

Dr. Ryland Grace was happy teaching junior high science until one day, people noticed that the sun was not shining as brightly and that the earth might die. Under strange circumstances, he was recruited to be part of a team to save the planet. Building a space station that could travel as far as it needed to go required a lot of accomplishment, and Dr. Grace was involved in every step. It was heady until it wasn't.

How could things have gone so wrong? The clock is ticking; he is alone in space, and Grace does not have all the abilities to accomplish all the tasks.

You will have to read about what happens next as it is so unbelievable, touching, scary, and educational. You will never have a better teacher than Dr. Ryland Grace to teach you what you need to know about space.

Many think this is a very good book; however, not being a SciFi fan at all I did not enjoy it very much. The minor amount of real science in it is over shadowed by wild, implausible astrophage and tarmeeba lifeforms as well as aliens with very human like emotions and conversations. It is a space thriller with all sorts of things going wrong and being fixed in the nick of time. The fact the all current nations on earth cooperated to generate the highly sophisticated Hail Mary spaceship to try and save the sun/planet .... naw; fantasy on top of SciFi on top of trite dialog. The audi book had a clever way of "translating" alien language into understandable English and the bits of real science/engineering included made it only slightly better than one star.

Although much of the physics and math went right over my head, the story is enchanting. The Earth is on the brink of becoming a frozen wasteland unless we halt the forces infecting our sun. Dr. Grace, a sixth-grade math teacher, is called into the project to save the Earth because of an offbeat paper he wrote in college. He joins the project and then finds himself in a spaceship traveling to another sun. He arrives to find an alien spaceship already orbiting. From here, the story becomes involved with communicating and working with the one alien left on the ship. In the end, he is again back teaching students math.

I read this book because my 15-year-old grandson recommended it.

I love Andy Weir & his style of writing & I didn’t think he could do better than The Martian but then along comes Project Hail Mary. if you love a good Sci Fi with an absolute banger of a mission to save earth then this is for you! Even if you don’t normally read Sci Fi you will enjoy this author. His stories are filled with science & humour & Alien Life Form, with so many laugh out loud moments. I have 2 new favourite literary characters, Dr Grace & yes I’m looking at you Rocky! Exceptionally well done 5 ⭐️

I only read the hail Mary project so far. this was the book that got me back into reading after a while. SOO good. it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I'm a science buff but I'm not that smart but the language he used helped me understand what was going on. I didn't feel lost in a sci Fi world but rather included to have me understand what it's really like out there. the ending was fabulous. I very much enjoyed the ending. get ready- it is an emotional rollercoaster! I did cry a couple times!

I loved the story line in this book, loved the characters as well! It was told mainly open first person and I loved Graces personality! However, the amount of engineering and science greatly took away from the flow of the book for me. The details were too in depth, in my opinion, needlessly taking away from the just of the story. I read this for a book club. I have talked with a few that feel the same way, but can’t wait to meet and hear everyone’s thoughts!! I think the upcoming movie will be great- I just didn’t enjoy the book.

this is just for phm as i want a log on my goodreads that i re read it. i read this again to give izzy a copy for her birthday but i also just wanted to read it again! im not going to write too much but i genuinely think this is one of the best books ever written for a lot of reasons. after watching the movie 3 times i also LOVE the movie they did such an amazing job. there are a few things i feel like they could have kept in the movie to add more but at the end of the day they are small. love this book forever everyone should read it.

I Heart Andy Weir. I'll say this: when I started with my own novel for high school students, as I'm a high school English teacher, I had a student tell me about how I should just put the book on Kindle. Not long after that, The Martian was gaining popularity, so I read it, and then I reached out to Andy Weir. He was a super thoughtful, cool, no-nonsense, bright guy about my age who encouraged me to put the book up on Kindle. So, in my mind, he already cannot do wrong. And, well, his work speaks for itself: Amaze. Amaze. Amaze.

Re Project Hail Mary: I don’t know when I started this book. I hadn’t read many chapters before going to the movie. I stopped my reading to focus on book club books and recently picked it up again on my kindle while traveling. I’m not a science fiction fan but I loved this book. I even read all the science parts, didn’t skip anything. Well-written, very interesting, science seems accurate and real, loved both main characters and how they got to know and love each other. And loved the ending! It helped that I had the visuals in my mind as I read!

Oh. My. Gosh. I hesitated when I hefted this book with small writing and over 400 pages. HOWEVER, I am SO glad I read it. And I thought all of the science and technical stuff would be hard to follow for me when I'm not a scientist or an astronaut; but it added to the overall experience for sure.

In recent years the opportunity to read truly imaginative science fiction that is also hard-core seemed to have evaporated. Andy Wier, with this book, has shown, unequivocally, that this is not the case. This is a great story that is about as hard SF as anyone could want. I loved this one!! I can’t wait to also watch the movie and compare. I listened to this one on audio book as it’s a #1 on so many lists. I was not disappointed. I found myself immersed in the task to save earth and figure out why only only planet seems to be immune to Astrophage. I love the creature he meets Rocky and the little language and idiosyncrasies they have together. Ooooh and the ending so freaking sweet! Where do I even go from here it was so good!

I love tech heavy fiction literature about military and sci fi topics, Tom Clancy and the like. As such The Martian was right in my wheelhouse. I was hoping for the same w/ “Project Hail Mary”. It did not quite deliver though. The set up was good but I found the story a bit beyond plausibility. Nevertheless it is well written and I was compelled to finish it, hoping to see a more satisfying conclusion than I got. Not wanting to give away any spoilers so just leave it at that.
