Avelyn Paige is the mischief-maker behind steamy dark romance, gritty mafia love stories, and high-octane motorcycle club tales that have blazed their way onto the Wall Street Journal and USA TODAY bestseller lists. She calls Indiana home, where she lives with her husband and five furry troublemakers who think they’re her editors.

When she’s not fighting the good fight in cancer research, Avelyn trades test tubes for plot twists and dives into worlds filled with danger, devotion, and deliciously bad decisions. She writes romance because it’s the one place where chaos and love can coexist, bullets can fly, hearts can heal, and everyone still gets the kind of ending worth fighting for.

After losing her dad in 2015, she turned heartbreak into creativity and never looked back. Now, she’s on a mission to prove that even the darkest hearts can find redemption, and that love—no matter how twisted—always leaves a mark worth remembering.

**I did receive this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion of it.

My Thoughts:

First off, look at that cover! It is a pretty badass representation of Evie, our protagonist in the story. Just from that cover, we can tell this is going to be a very gritty and dark story.

Damaged makes us question how we would be willing to go in order to live our lives, no matter the circumstances. It puts us in touch with our morality and makes us look deep into our hearts to see how we could cope with the price.

Our protagonist, Evie Carter, has a type of cancer that is incurable. The doctors have tried everything and yet it keeps coming back. Then they pose the question to her : can we try something controversial and new? Left with no other options besides giving up, Evie decides to try this unexpected drug.

This is when her life gets even more turned upside down.

I can totally understand why Evie went for the drug trials; I probably would have done the exact same thing. No one wants to look death in the eye at such a young age. It is not in us to just give up. So right then, we see that Evie is a fighter.

This is when we see the development of Evie's character more when she has to literally try to cope with her morality and new abilities, while trying to learn who she can trust and not trust.
I did feel like Evie was a little too forgiving for my tastes; but at the same time, I guess I can understand how alone she must have felt without anyone.

I did enjoy watching Evie learn her body's powers and limitations and really just learning to live again. She is only in her twenties; yet she really hasn't experienced life as a young adult.

The world builiding was decent. As I was reading this book, I felt that the pacing was a little slow and I was seeing this as a three star book.....
But then we got close to the end and OHMYGOODNESS!!!! The last few chapters were freaking amazing! There was so much action and drama; I was pretty much speechless!
And it gives us this to die for cliffhanger!

Basically, Damaged is a pretty good book. It has this science fiction kinda feel to it with some definite drama scenes mixed in with it. One of my favorite parts is that we get to see Evie grow as a character and person. She gets to experience life; albeit not the life she would have chose, but still life. And the ending is wonderful!

Of course, this is a gritty book with lots of cursing in it and it does have some sexual scenes in it as well. But I would urge any adults to give Damaged a try. It will make you think about how far you would go to beat death.

This was a fantastic debut novel by Avelyn!!!! I was very lucky to read this book while she was writing and I literally could not wait for more. Just when you think you know what’s going to happen… BAM… the story changes completely and you are left thinking what just happened.

Evie is struggling with her fight against cancer. She has tried everything possible and refuses to give up fighting for her life. When Evie is offered an experimental drug she decides to take it without hesitation. Little did Evie know her whole entire life was about to change with this one simple drug mean to save her life. Evie was expecting to live and be happy with her family. But when she woke up everything she thought she knew was completely changed forever.
I hate spoilers and it’s so hard to keep my lips sealed because so many amazing things happened in this book. Evie is no longer the girl fighting for cancer but a beast who cannot be stopped. In this book, we meet some characters that I fell in love with and others I wanted to strangle with my bare hands. At the end of this book my mouth was completely hanging open with shock!! I cannot wait for book 2 and can only cross my fingers that Evie gets the happy life she thought she signed up for.

Holy Crap please tell me when book 2 is going to be available to read.
I can not wait to find out what happens to Evie.

A young woman loosing a battle with cancer, being rejected for clinical trial programs until one day she is accepted. After having a bone marrow and MZP injected into her, she dies. Her family has to move on without her while she is secretly alive in a remote testing facility where she is put through some extreme physical therapy, so strange testing by the lady who performed the clinical trial testing. Being cut, shot, kept in lock down.
The handsome Sgt. physical trainer. WOW, who could resist a muscle covered hottie. Evie is being trained to be a new type of soldier, out performing and surpassing all the expectations put before her.
After proving she can handle what ever is thrown at her she is sent out for her first assignment, to track down a wanted terrorist.
After the brutal interrogation of her partner/physical therapist Evie tries her hand at the interrogation to find out that he is not a terrorist but in fact the same as her. She does not want him to have a life like her so she goes AWOL.
WOW you gotta read this book.

An Awesome Debut!
What a different story this has turned out to be. I have to say I haven't read anything quite like this! This is Evie's story. Evie has had a hard life, she is battling cancer. While many people would throw up their hands after so many failed treatments, Evie wants to fight. She wants to live. She wants everything in life anyone else her age gets to have. She wants to be a normal girl with a normal life. Is that too much to ask? Finally Evie is offered an experimental treatment, if course she is going to say yes, she wants life! She is administered the drug and yes she will live, but at what cost. The drug changed everything for Evie. Her life as she knows it, or even imagined it to be will never be the same. I won't expound on the plot as I don't want to leave spoilers, but I will say that this is a total must read! It will keep you turning pages until the end. The end! Oh! I can't wait for the next book! I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book really touched me. While reading it I went through a lot of different emotions, sadness, happiness, confusion, anger, angst, and a whole lot more. Evie is a young woman who has been battling cancer for quite awhile and all her options have run out. She makes the courageous decision to try alternative medicine and trials to save her life. After meeting Dr. Lu, she starts the trials, but they do not work and soon her family is saying goodbye. But for Evie, it's just the beginning of her new life. She will soon find out the true purpose of her brand new existence, and she is a fighter who will stop at nothing for what she believes in. There are twists, turns, and of course it makes you want to read what happens next. I really enjoyed this book, and I can't wait to read the next one!!

**AUTHOR HAS CORRECTED THE MINOR EDITING ISSUES AS OF MAY 29/15**

It’s in that moment…

when I panic. It's in that moment, I know my life is over. It's in that moment...WOW!! This is a complicated book & review to write on it! That is a good thing though, trust me!! Please do not misunderstand my “floundering” for the correct words to aptly describe how this book flows. IT IS A TERRIFIC STORY! There may not be a lot of excitement like you might find in other books, but this is THE book that is setting the stage for the rest of the series, and by the time I got to the ending, I understand just exactly WHY we were experiencing everything with Evie and couldn’t wait for….Nope! Sorry! No spoilers from me!!! This is definitely a tough book to read, at least for the first part! I am not sure just how many times I thought I would break down crying, or stop reading altogether! However I was also drawn into the story too deep to just 'give up', so on I kept reading! And I am so glad I did otherwise I would have missed out on a terrific story!!!! Now I have never had cancer so I will never assume to fully understand everything that you personally go through on that journey, but I get the impression that Avelyn has dealt with this based on the way it is written, the 'little' details but also the feelings & sensations, emotions and heartbreak. I did go through my own "hospital adventure" so I knew just what Evie was going through with the nurses always taking blood, regardless if the sun was up or not, the PIC or PICC line, etc. Given all that, I think that is why I connected with the story & Evie and had to find out just what was going to happen. Of course, I could never have been prepared for what DID happen and WOW! And ummm, hello?!?! I never had a Tommy of my own! Not that I want to know him in his SGT. Jackson mode mind you! I very much was enthralled with and couldn't wait to see just where this was going to end up! I never knew who to trust, who not to trust, who to like or hate. I found this to be an easy read only because the story moves along pretty quickly, almost in the same way a lighthearted story would. It is a deep, serious subject, but it is written in such a way that you get immersed into it right away, there is a lot of emotion in it, and it moves quickly with lots going on, but it is all done very fluidly. While the subject starts off grim, and gets more intense in different ways as the story progresses, it is a fairly quick read. I found that I was breezing through the story, connected with Evie, and the next thing I knew I was at the end! ALREADY?!? Now don’t misunderstand me with the “easy read” part. It is a great story that has lots going on, lots of meat to it, and while Evie obviously had a life (somewhat) beforehand, this is her “new” life so there really isn’t any history to establish, aside from the first bit of the book. It isn’t a very intense storyline, until the last couple of chapters, that is! Then I was anxiously reading, sitting on the proverbial "edge of my seat" holding my breath (not proverbial) to see what was going to happen!!! I am Team Evie all the way! And I honestly was from the very start! I felt like I needed to protect her since she is dead to her family, she needs someone to look out for her! All in all, I actually enjoyed this story immensely - given that I wasn't sure I would be able to read past the first couple of chapters!- and I CANNOT wait for the next book to find out just what is in store for my new friend Evie! (There are a few editing issues, but they are very minor, only once did it interrupt the flow, but since those are fixable and don't impact the story, I didn't think they were worth "holding it against the story" and knocking points off.)

>>I received this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. <<

*3.5 Stars*

With "Damaged" by Avelyn Paige I didn´t get what I expected. It took me quite some time to sort my thoughts and put them into into a logical review.

When I started reading the first pages of the book my thoughts were like " How is this book supposed to fit to the cover which shows this woman in leather clothes, boots and this special kind of hair?" After this moment the drastical change came -for me pretty unexpected. After this you are confronted with a totally different genre - a genre which normally isn´t my cup of tea, but in this case surprised me....

I got a story including interesting characters whose past is a secret as you just kind of fall into the story which is set somewhere you don´t get to know much about-exept of a very detailed description of the surroundings which helps to imagine the setting. In combination with a very lifely writing-style, it´s easy to cennect with the story and characters in general.

I rated this book with 3.5 (4) Stars. So there have to be some reasons why it didn´t get the full 5 Star-review. For me there are some "too obvious" time leaps which at some points just tear you out of the story at a point during which you just started connecting with the scene. So you have to connect with it over and over again which is at the end worth it, but during reading a little bit disturbing. As a reader we also know that the characters all have their own head, that they make decicions you as a reader might not understand ...
So I understand that Evie is a special kind of "human" who also seems to be"especially special" as she has even better powers than others in the world of "Damaged". But even then it would have been good to see her struggling more about the fact that she just isn´t allowed to live a life on her own, to make own decisions, to insiston her rights to get to know what is happening to her.
She falls into her new role in my opinion just too easily which is maybe the case because of her trust-worthy new partner who surprises her in more than one way(you will find out while reading).

I thought about the points I mentioned and asked myself the question why I might feel this way. This debut novel has got around 135 pages which is rather short compared with other novels of this genre. I am sure that with more pages for the characters to fill, I would feel different about the mentioned aspects. My feelings also tell me that I am obviously interested in getting to know more about this story.

So I would be happy to read a second book some day...!?

Wow! What a great debut novel for author Avelyn Paige! This lady really knows how to get a reader interested and keep them turning pages!

Tommy: Talk about an alpha! We all know I love me some alphas and Tommy was one of them. Sure, he had a temper at times, but I kind of like a little temper every once in a while. I'm not sure Tommy is the actual hero of the series but he was the hero of this book...sort of. You'll understand once you finish the book.

Evie: I loved Evie. She started out as a weak cancer patient and turned total bad ass! Her character was strong all throughout the book. Even when she was a cancer patient on her death bed, she was still strong for those around her. Even when she thought she would never make it through testing and training, she still kept at it and kicked more ass.

The plot for this book was great! I have never seen an author take such a serious, debilitating, disease and turn it in to something great. What was nice was that the story wasn't dragged out. It grabbed you by the arm, took off at full speed and then never let you go.

Two thumbs up for Avelyn on this one! I can't wait to read the next in the series!

I was given this book to review for our blog United by Books.

What a stunning debut!

I was pleasantly surprised by this book and I will admit had Avelyn not messaged our blog I probably wouldn't have come across Damaged. I read a lot of books and this storyline was unlike anything I have read recently, if ever and I really enjoyed it. Avelyn has quite the imagination and this story is a credit to that.

I will be honest when I first started this book I wasn't sure I would get into it or even last a few chapters but it wasn't long before I was hooked. Like I said before the storyline is quite unique and new to me. It was fast paced and constantly surprising me, in a very good way, things never went quite where I thought they would. Some books you can tell where a story is heading and what is going to happen next and this is very far from that. It had me on the edge of my seat and eager to find out what was coming next, very thrilling!

I loved Avelyn's characters, especially Evie. She becomes such a strong, resilient and fiesty young woman even with everything that's thrown at her. I loved watching her grow, blossom and exceed everything that's expected of her, it is an extraordinary journey to read. Then there is Vickie and Tommy. Vickie becomes a friend to Evie even when she's not supposed to. She's a lively funny character and a joy to read. Tommy, ah Tommy! Every story needs a hot piece of eye candy and he is it. It's nice seeing each of the sides to his character and personality. But I will let you ladies meet him yourself!

It's definitely worth picking up a copy of this and indulging as it is well worth the read, I guarantee you won't be disappointed!!

Congratulations on an outstanding book Avelyn!

I absolutely loved this story! Evie is such a strong character both mentally and physically. Mrs. Avelyn Paige hit this one out of the park. It was not only intense but thrilling and captivating. There was so much going on with this book behind the scenes that you have no idea until you finished. I had an “Oh snap” moment.

Evie is perfect! I loved her character, she was so strong. She was battling cancer and that right there is enough to make you the strongest person on the planet. You cannot help but fall in love with her and her willingness to survive. Realizing too late that she’s made a deal with the devil her life is about to be changed completely. She may get cured from cancer but is it worth it?

The chemistry between Tommy and Evie was fiery hot, their flirtatious endeavors’ left me wanting for more. As Evie comes into her new self she gets a new back bone and she won’t take crap from anyone including the brooding Tommy. On her first assignment she learns more about her predicament that changes everything. I cannot wait for the next installment in this series.
Just a little insider tid bit!! There are a few naughty sections and bad language throughout. Just a fair warning to those who don’t like that! This book is totally worth the read and it was pretty quick!

I think I may pull my hair out! That's what I think!

My first thought upon completing Damaged by Avelyn Paige was "WHAT?! You have got to be kidding!" I will disclose that Damaged is a major cliffhanger and it is my understanding that the second book should be coming out in the fall.

I wasn't completely into the book when I first started reading, but it didn't full chapter for me to reach that "I can't put this down" place and I carried my iPhone around with me everywhere so I could read a few more pages.

Facing life altering decisions after a youth filled with cancer treatments didn't prepare Evie for that final decision or the events that would unfold. She is a young woman of great courage and reminds me of so many of my family and friends that I've lost to cancer over the years.

The characters are easy to love and hate. The book's development is very well organized and thought out. My only complaint is Sgt. Jackson's foul-mouthed referral to what should be a young woman's first sexual experience. But then again, he may not be the knight-in-shining-armor he's been trying to be.

I am very excited by this debut novel from Avelyn Paige and highly recommend Damaged as your next to-be-read book!

Evie has been battling cancer from a very young age.
We meet up with her in the hospital for news of her current treatment along with her parents.

Its a gasping situation when you are told "there is nothing else we can do for you, the treatment isn't working"
I can't imagine how that must feel to the person who is sat the other side of that desk listening to those fatal word.

Evie is silent.
Her Mother is gasping for air.
Her Father doesn't believe it.

"Surely there is something you can do?"

There lies the pivot of this story.

Something is offered. But not all turns out fine.

Her parents and brother end up saying 'goodbye' to her. She doesn't make it.....

Or does she?

The experimental drug leads her to another dimension of her life that her family aren't on the journey to, its unknown.

I was texting my book friend Philomena when I got to that bit, I was wondering if this is sci fi.

I've not updated her, as she needs to read this for herself and SOON"!

This is not a straight forward story. I was in awe the way this story line lead me to. Its not something I have had the pleasure of reading before.

If this is Avelyn Paige first novel then we are in for some future treats :)

I would like to thank the book tour host for supplying me with my copy.

Independent reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock.

This is a great début novel by Avelyn Paige. This story is so different than any others.

Evie has a struggle on her hands as she is fighting against cancer. She has tried just about everything possible and she refuses point blank to give up fighting for her life. But then she is offered something totally different than anything she has tried before, an experimental drug and she decides to take it without any hesitation at all.

But what Evie does not know is her whole life is about to change, Big time. She was expecting to live a happy and content life with her family. But Then she wakes up and everything she thought she had known is now completely and utterly changed forever, She is not the girl fighting to live because of cancer but a soldier who cannot be stopped at all.

We meet some characters that are awesome and others that I wanted to scream at. but each of them served there purpose and at the end of this book i was in a state of shock.

I hope if there is a book 2 that Evie gets the happy ever after she thought she had signed up for.

This was a great start to a new series. Avelyn, really had me believing this book was going to be some lovey dovey, sappy book about a girl beating cancer! Nope! She throws in a twist and bam! The girl dies, then she comes back and just when i start thinking whats going to happen, bam! Another twist, the military steps in and this poor girl has to kiss her dreams goodbye. They want to use her for secret missions and dont get me started on Tommy! I really thought they might have a small romance, but after what he pulled, oh no! That mans got some pay back coming!
All i have to say is there are several grammar mistakes, but easily looked over .
The book does start kinda slow but it builds up and then it takes off!
So if you stick with it, i promise you it gets better. The things that this poor girl goes thru, first being a sick teenager, then the physical reconditioning to get her body into shape, and then her first mission all goes wrong! I hope in the second book she gets a break and finds some shred of true happiness.
This book was given to me in trade for a honest review,as a reviewer for M.Brennan. Thank you.

While most women in their twenties are busy with school, friends and fun that is not the case for Evie. Seven years ago she was diagnosed with cancer and has spent most of that time in one hospital or another. This year is the same and it only gets worse. When her Doctor advises that the normal courses of treatment are no longer working and her only hope is getting into a medical trial Evie is faced with literally a life or death choice. Little does she know that she will be putting her life in the hands of a deranged woman. But when offered a chance at life she can’t turn it down. When she wakes up from her procedure and realizes the extent of deception and mental instability that surrounds her all she can do is grin and bear it, at least for the time being. When she learns exactly what was done to her and what she is expected to do she is speechless. Can she survive these mad scientists? Does she have it in her to become the weapon they want her to be? When faced with the true extent of her new life what will she choose life as a weapon or life on the run?

This story is so different it begs to be read!
I have got to be honest from the beginning, this is NOT my usual read....but I am SO glad I took a chance and read this!
While it IS a quick read, Avelyn Paige packs a lot of story in there!
Damaged is about Evie. A girl suffering from terminal cancer. Faced with a choice, she chose what she thought was life only to find out that maybe she picked a fate worse than death.
Evie's story is action packed and never slows down. Avelyn Paige has a gift for telling details without having them bog down the action packed storyline, and this story line IS action packed! Just when I thought I had it figured out, I was thrown for a loop in a twist I did not see coming. I cannot wait to see how Evie evols in the next book and just how her split second decision pans out. As I stated previously, NOT my usual kind of book but none the less, it is a 5 star read from me. Any book that is outside my comfort zone and sucks me in deserves nothing less. Brilliant debut and cannot wait for more!

CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS

This book was wow. There were surprises at every turn. This is an awesome debut novel for Avelyn and I can not wait to see where this story goes in the next book.

Evie has had a hard struggle the past 7 years. When she went to the dr for a routine physical for softball tryouts, her life was changed forever. She was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. For the past 7 years she has been in and out of various hospitals and dr offices fighting this disease. The last of the blood work comes back and she is told that there is nothing else they can do. Is it the end of the road for Evie? Is there some miracle cure to help or will she die?

You really need to get this book to find out what happens! I was left with my mouth hanging open in shock at the end of the book! You will not be disappointed! Great debut novel Avelyn, I can't wait to see what else you have in store for us readers!

I love the cover and the synopsis for this book. It's something different, and it didn't disappoint. I really enjoyed it.
Evie has been suffering from Cancer for years, the doctors have tried to cure her for years. But at 23 she is told they can do nothing for her. The doctor explains that she can try drug trails. So she goes ahead and after 6 months of nothing there is finally a doctor interested in putting her into her trail.
The treatment ends up changing her, something that she could never have expected.
But in her new life she faces things far worse.
I really enjoyed this book, I connected with Evie straight away. She is a young women having had her life ripped away from her and a young age because of a horrible disease.
Then she gets thrown into this new life without her family and has to go through this training. But the people around her are keeping secrets.
The story was gripping and kept me guessing what would happen. I didn't see then ending coming at all and I'm really interested to see what happens next with Evie.

Evie Carter hasn’t had a good life at all. At 23-years-old, she’s spent the majority of her life battling cancer, and now the treatments are no longer working. As a last resort and fight for her life, Evie applies and signs up for a trial program that she knows nothing about, but it may be her only option.

When she wakes up, life as she knew it is over. Her genetic makeup has been changed and she soon learns she is no longer a normal human. But what is with the non-stop, intensive therapy and training? What exactly is she training for?

I know that is vague but I really don’t want to give anything away. Just when you think you’ve got it figured out, and you know who to trust…BAM! You’re left thinking, “WTF just happened?” Just read this amazing story…I promise it’ll be different from anything you’ve read before. This is my first journey with this author but I can’t wait to read more from her.

This debut novel by Avelyn Paige is beyond a great read! I thought the story line and the idea of the novel was interesting and not to mention how unique it is. Evie has had a hard life. Fighting almost her entire teenage life she has missed out on so much. She wants to live. She just wants that chance to beat the cancer and be a normal girl.
Her life literally changes and turns into something she never imagined. Her life is now something she never really wanted. Something that makes her different. That normal girl dream is forever gone. But at least she is still alive!
I really enjoyed reading this novel by Avelyn. It was full of twists and things that I never saw coming. I cannot wait for the next in the series. I cannot wait to see how bad ass Evie becomes. It was a great ride and I highly recommend picking up this great novel!

~~I received this in exchange for my honest opinion~~

I liked this book, but I didn't love this book. I will get the next one because it has left me intrigued. I found the storyline to be excellant. I haven't read anything like this before, there was a good plot twist that I didn't see coming at all. Evie is on her deathbed and has tried everything under the sun to cure or stop the growth of the cancer, but nothing has worked, until now.

This has some action in it, and a lot of questions that weren't answered in this book. However, I am sure that Avelyn will answer them in future books. Her writing is fresh and new, as stated above, I haven't read anything like this. Sure there are storylines that kind of touch on the subject but she has actually written about it. Give this book a try!!

Evie- She is a spunky 23 year old girl…who just happens to be on her death bed. Dying of cancer, once the doctors give her the horrible news she decides to take part in a trial program for a drug that is supposed to cure her. What she doesn’t know and doesn't expect is what happens next.

Sargent Tommy Jackson- Is an ex-military man and now is working for the “Boss” who he served under in the military. He is Evie’s personal trainer.

I can’t say to much without giving the whole story away and I hate when reviews do that. So long story short it was a really great book! I’d give it a solid 4 stars. I would be happen to see what happens next in book two. There has to be a book two!! There's a cliffy at the end! Is their love real? Or is it just an act?

Wow, this book was not at all what I was expecting. In a good way, I mean.

The first twist comes after Evie, who is battling terminal cancer, takes a chance on a drug trial. The results are.. well, I don't want to say too much as it'll give the plot away, but they are surprising, exciting and the story really gets going.

The second twist comes near the end. After a story that had already become a page turner for me, I did not see it coming at all, and I was literally saying "OH MY GOD" when it was revealed.

I really enjoyed this book, and although there were some editing issues, it didn't detract from the story for me. I'm looking forward to reading book 2, because I imagine it to be another page turner, but this time from page one!

An arc was received on behalf of Obsessed by Books

A debut book for this author and it is a read that will have you believing that this writer has been writing for years.

Alot of twists and turns are in this read and you will be pleasantly surprised, Avelyn touches a subject that I think has touch most if nor all in our lives. A story of not wanting to give up, a choice between life and death, I mean which one would you choose, knowing the consequences of your choice.

A brilliant read and excellent plot, and you will be left wanting more from this author

Amazing! I received this book for an honest review. I loved this book. It was really sad in the beginning and then bam off we go. This book is about a young lady with terminal cancer, she quickly agrees to undergo a trial bone marrow transplant. Her family is told she had died and then she's swept off to become the next great weapon! This book had it all. It was amusing, sad, romantic and exciting! It does leave you in a cliffhanger. Which I absolutely hate but it was easy enough be patient for the next installment. I'm not exactly sure who sent me this ARC but thank you very much!
