Бременната жена: ръководство за употреба

Rate this book

Sixteen years is a lot of time. So some of the advice in this book which came out in 2008 is out of date a bit. Or a lot, depending on the circumstances. Like the screening tests available during the first trimester. But brevity works to its advantage, and the tone helps put a lot of stuff into perspective. It's funny enough to keep the atmosphere optimistic and the book flowing. The short summaries at the end of each chapter and the hepful diagrams are great starting points for a strategy going forward. On to The Baby Owner's Manual before signing up for a hands on childcare course.

A fun little book with amusing illustrations! I wouldn't say I learned that much, so it's probably more for basic knowledge. There's also some info that is outdated now, and the parts for dads could be a bit stereotypical and old-fashioned. Otherwise it's good, it would make a great gift for a parent-to-be!
Now on to The Baby Owner's Manual: Operating Instructions, Trouble-Shooting Tips & Advice on First-Year Maintenance

Wish I would have STARTED with this pregnancy book. It contains everything that I've gleaned from about 20 different books and my doctor, all in a nice little package.

It's a great introduction that gets into the nasty stuff you don't want to hear about, and you can easily take any follow-up questions and either ask your doctor or get a more in-depth book. What I also found particularly great about this book is that it doesn't seem to take sides on the natural vs. medicated birth topic - it presents both without bias (that I could detect).

It also gave the most accurate hospital-based labor walk-through that I've found. (Of course, having not given birth yet, I'm basing this solely upon my hospital tours and my doctor's walk-through on what to expect.) All the other books are either so pro-medication that it's ridiculous, or so anti-medication that it makes you think the entire hospital staff is out to shove meds in you the first chance they get. And of course so many books/websites suggest asking questions like "you won't give my baby any pacifiers if I'm breastfeeding, right?" and "why won't you let the baby room-in with me?" In fact, every hospital I've looked into will easily comply with any requests like this, and rooming-in is now the norm, not the exception. Makes me think all the other books are completely outdated...

i wanted to use that book as a source for a term paper. liked it pretty well until i saw that it claims that after the 1st trimester it is okay to drink a glass of wine per week. like NO??? it is NOT OKAY!!
if a pregnant person drinks alcohol the fetus has the exact same blood alcohol level. but since its organs aren’t developed completely a fetus cannot break it down or reduce it by any sorts. so the only way for the alcohol to leave the fetus’s blood circulation is the concentration gradient between its own and the mothers blood circulation when the pregnant person‘s liver starts to break down the alcohol. that means that the fetus is exposed to the consequences of alcohol for a longer time period than the mother is. it is completely false to spread that kind of information.
fetal alcohol spectrum disorders are a sadly common disorder to be born with and even so little as a glass of wine *once* during the whole pregnancy can cause the fetus to suffer lifelong consequences.

This book cuts straight to the point without trying too hard to be funny, sisterly, or judgey. Currently on my 11th week, and I feel that this book has helped cement the information I've already read online and from other pregnancy books. The infographics are fun to look at, and the information is laid out clearly in sections. This has become my favorite pregnancy book, and will be seeking this out at my public library again for sure.

Funny, simple and practical guide throughout pregnancy, including what's really needed for the baby that's coming and birth talk. Love the humor and the illustrations. Less overwhelming than all the other pregnancy books out there!

Glib and sexist. What kind of pregnancy book tells you you should wax?!

In short, I would classify this as a Fun Read. It is a small, compact book chock full of useful information and is filled with quirky illustrations. The overall structure of the book is similar to that of an instruction manual, even down to the diagrams of various situations (e.g. an emergency delivery, packing the hospital bag, food cravings, and "signs of child delivery initialization".) My favorite diagrams were "Coitus Interruptus" and the hilarious comparison of "Real Baby vs. TV Baby".

While this could not be considered the "end all and be all" to one's books on pregnancy (it was certainly light on the breastfeeding information), I definitely recommend this as a fun read for a pregnant mom or dad. In particular, if you know someone who has a tendency to stress out or give in to paranoia, I would suggest this a gift to encourage some light-heartedness. Furthermore, an added benefit to this book is that it is very Dad Friendly and would make an excellent gift for a dad, too.

After all, pregnancy should be fun, too. Right? Right.

The Pregnancy Instruction Manual: Essential Information, Troubleshooting Tips, and Advice for Parents-to-Be by Sarah Jordan

★★★★

When I found out I was pregnant I went crazy in finding books about pregnancy and delved right in. While many of these books provide a lot of good, in-depth, information, I quickly became overwhelmed. So I finally chose to pick up this little book. I’ve read other books in this series and I’ve always found them informative (although not in-depth) but also funny. Luckily this book was the same way and sometime all an overwhelmed mommy-to-be needs is a little light reading and humor to make her realize pregnancy isn’t quite as immense as she thought. It has good information, fun tidbits, cute little charts, and section for the dads. Maybe not the know-all of everything pregnancy but definitely a great starter book and a fast read (it only took me a few hours to get through this 224 page book).

What I liked best about this guide was the many easy-to-follow lists, like what to pack for the hospital and what you need to have purchased before the baby gets here. There are guides and lists for every stage of the pregnancy through when you bring the baby home. What I don't like is that these guides, so far, all seem so sexist. This one had a section on what the father would be feeling that included "revulsion over the pregnant body," "neglect," and "increasing concerns about finances." Who are these men? Where are the successful women? What about stay-at-home dads and career moms, or moms with bigger incomes? For that matter, what about GLBTQ parents, or even single mothers? I certainly hope I won't have to worry about my husband trying to "watch the big game" on the television in the labor and delivery room, but who the hell does have to worry about that?

The best book to start with - it has all the important information in a beautifully condensed form that includes tips, lists, and awesomely drawn figures that no proper instruction manual could do without. Whenever I have a question this is the first book that I turn to as I know that I'll find what I need without being overwhelmed and it's a fun read.

What a quick and informative read! I knocked it out in just a few hours but I feel like this book covered most, of not all, the material from the other books I'm reading.
