It was a good build up. Jor-el has to realize why he’s doing all of this, is not for the Earth, it’s for himself. Lex is taking over magic, and humanity is just as stupid as ever.

This issue is about the pursuit of knowledge, but also serves as a dangerous lesson in, how Superman puts it, constantly treating the symptoms vs addressing the core sickness. I find it ironic that the issue starts with Superman monologuing to a group of goons he stopped from stealing the tech off a free magnetic train that they almost killed a woman who still works extra shifts in the world he has shaped because she still can’t afford the medical supplies he helped to upgrade. That says everything you need to know about Superman’s head space when it comes to trying to help the world, and is then surprised when the same crime that plagues the Superman of the main universe, from people trying to survive, effects him as well. As Superman poorly works through these issues, honestly shutting out anyone who gives him the truthful answer he doesn’t want to hear while brute forcing his way through another technological solution which won’t fix the core issues, another character is learning quite a bit more…Lex Luthor Sorcerer Supreme. He has carved his way through the mystic side of the DC universe, convincing the likes of Madame Xanadu, Raven, Zatanna, Boston Brand, Papa Midnite, Etrigan, and even swamp thing to teach him their ways. And now the only person he has left to learn from to truly tie all of those skills together is located in Salem, Mass…Doctor Fate! After hearing that Lex learned from all of those other mystics, Kent agreed to help. He honed Lex’s amazing skills to be as precise as a scalpel, but his thirst for knowledge and power bent rooted in revenge also scares Kent. But when he tried to reach out to the other mystics, through carrier Raven as how else would he do it lol, Kent doesn’t even realize that Lex shot the Raven down with an arrow and burned the message away before it could reach the others.

All the while, Jor-El is grappling with the reason he is trying to help everyone as he remembers back to his own family dying. As he works tirelessly on his project to solve the energy problem, his base is attacked by Captain atom wielding the energy absorption power of parasite through a unit he carries in his back! He is able to direct the power at Superman, actually beating him down in the street and stealing Superman’s energy project. Leaving him with a lead gas grenade to mask his escape and leave Superman weakened for a few hours as the city around him crumbles from the attack. It turns out in this universe the atom project actually failed and took Nathaniel Adam with it…but the military was still able to move forward on developing a shifting metal which forms around Sam Lane to become Captain atom! And Sam isn’t working alone anymore, putting together a team to take down Superman once and for all…his WILDC.A.T.S. Honestly the fits for this team are not it. They definitely have that dollar bin action figure feel. But the team itself is somewhat interesting. It of course includes grifter, then Zealot, G.I.Robot Mark 2, a masked Green Lantern, Deathstroke, and a character I don’t recognize named void floating above them with a pink halo around them. Fun stuff.

Pretty good compare and contrast of Jor running up against the wall trying to figure out how to do the most good while multiple factions are plotting his downfall in creative ways, definitely the best pacing in this series so far.
