Philosophy and Opinions of Marcus Garvey [Volumes I & II in One Volume]

Rate this book
2014 Reprint of Two Volume Edition, First Published from 1923 to 1926. Full facsimile of the original edition. Not reproduced with OCR. This collection of Garvey's writing remains the most famous collection of Garvey's speeches and essays. Marcus Garvey and the "Universal Negro Improvement Association" form a critical link in black America's centuries-long struggle for freedom, justice, and equality. As the leader of the largest organized mass movement in black history and progenitor of the modern "black is beautiful" ideal, Garvey is now best remembered as a champion of the back-to-Africa movement. In his own time he was hailed as a redeemer, a "Black Moses." Though he failed to realize all his objectives, his movement still represents an attempt at liberation from the psychological bondage of racial inferiority.

Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jr., National Hero of Jamaica, was a publisher, journalist, entrepreneur, Black Nationalist, Pan-Africanist, and orator. Marcus Garvey was founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL).

Garvey was unique in advancing a Pan-African philosophy to inspire a global mass movement focusing on Africa known as Garveyism. Promoted by the UNIA as a movement of African Redemption, Garveyism would eventually inspire others, ranging from the Nation of Islam, to the Rastafari movement (which proclaims Garvey as a prophet). The intention of the movement was for those of African ancestry to "redeem" Africa and for the European colonial powers to leave it.

This is the first time I’m reading this in years. I’ve started it over the years but never got past a few chapters. I’ve alway had this book as a 5 star and highly recommended it. Now it reads like a religious text and a lot of the philosophy did not age well. That said this book is still relevant today and so is Garvey’s teachings. Hence why it’s gotten a 2 star. I am a huge fan of the work he has done but objectively this first 2 volumes is very repetitive and forcefully religious.

I’ll be reading the rest of the book now that my view have changed so much. This is still a book I thing all should read but is definitely more palatable for the religious pan Africans and not an atheist one like myself.

his words are from an older time, however i do think his thoughts towards unity and financial independence are in the right step. he also needs to reduce religious elements ,christianity usually has a negative affect on thought processes and forward thinking.

This is an excellent book showcasing the philosophies and opinions of Marcus Garvey. It was written by his wife and it provides very good insight into his various thoughts concerning different concepts. Examples of these concepts would be life, unity, blackness, etc. it also speaks about his conferences and touches on the foundations of his speeches and gives insight into black nationalism, his thoughts, and his ideas on how to unify the black race.

MUST READ for all Children of Africa. Took me a very long time to read this as I read it trying to memorize the text and meanings. If people listened or are willing to listen then we as Africans can set our futures up for success.

Don’t let Garvey die.
