After an unexpected attack claims her mom, seventeen-year-old Veya is forced to abandon the only home she's ever known and the only boy she’s ever loved to make a new life on Pangalax, a US space station.
Heartbroken, angry, and homesick, she resents her dad’s decision to move and his demand to hide her unique abilities. As she suspected, appearing normal proves to be nearly impossible, especially around Kye, a way-too-handsome officer who is determined to break through her walls.
But can he be trusted?
Can anyone be trusted?
As Veya uncovers the deep, dark secrets of Pangalax, her very existence becomes threatened. Only one person can save her.
Is she willing to forget the past and trust him with her life?
SM Koz was born in Michigan, but moved to North Carolina for college and never left.
She enjoys traveling, camping, hiking, photography, reading, spending time with foster kids who call her house home, and learning new things. When she’s not creating online training for pharmaceutical companies (her day job) or writing, Koz can be found at the local community college taking courses on various topics ranging from digital art to HTML to desktop publishing. Next in line are auto mechanics and cake decorating.
Being trained as a veterinarian, it’s not surprising that Koz and her husband were recently told they have a mini-zoo with their two dogs, fish, cockatiels, and foster cats. In the past, they have also had parakeets and a snake. Other than the fish, all the animals were acquired through rescue organizations, something Koz wholeheartedly supports.
SM Koz has written six novels. Although her stories differ by genre, ranging from contemporary realism to sci-fi to fanfiction, two things they all have in common are a young or new adult focus and romance. If you'd like to read more by SM Koz, check her out on Amazon.

Actual rating - 3.25
Veya was an okay character, and I felt quite sorry for her a few times.
This was slightly confusing at first, but after a few chapters it was fine. I did find the pacing to be pretty slow in areas, but it wasn't awful, and the story still kept my interest, so it wasn't a major issue.
(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to author SM Koz.)
This was an okay story, but I expected more.
I couldn’t really connect with the characters in this story, and I ended up not caring what happened to them, which wasn’t good.
The storyline was again, okay, but I just couldn’t really get into it, and kept wanting to put the book down. I don’t know why this was, but I just didn’t enjoy it.
The ending was a bit of a cliff-hanger, but I don’t think I want to read any more books in this series.
First of all, I have say I don't usually go for the sci-fi genre. Books set in space (or television shows or movies, for that matter) don't usually pique my interest. If you're like me, you may be tempted to pass on Pangalax.
Don't.
Yes, it's set in space and it discusses aliens, BUT this story is more about the personal interactions/mystery of the characters than the location.
Aveyana (Veya) is a seventeen-going-on-eighteen year old hybrid. She's half human, half N'hreetian, and has lived on N'hreen her entire life. She's accepted there, even though she is the only one of her kind. She has an on-again, off-again N'hreetian boyfriend named Tash, and her life is of a typical teenager (given that she lives on a planet other than Earth). The story starts with a bang, when Veya's mother, a full N'hreetian, is kidnapped and no one knows by who. Veya is forced to leave N'hreen by her father and travel to a U.S. space station named Pangalax.
Once on the space station, Veya is introduced to the world of humans. Everyone on Pangalax is human, and she needs to lay low and blend in. She's assigned a job, as is everyone, however it doesn't work out. Against her father's wishes, she signs up for the military draft where she meets the older, extremely handsome Captain Tarrington, aka Kye. **insert swoon here** Through different interactions and assumptions , she sets out to discover who took her mother and figure out a way to get her back.
Pangalax has everything - plenty of twists, political intrigue, action, a few laughs, love, and some sweet moments. SM Koz writes her characters, even the secondary ones, with tons of personality (Love me some IPP!) Trust me; if you take a chance on this story, you'll get lost in the plot and the book will end before you know it. This is book one in a trilogy, so it does end on a cliffhanger, but not an over-the-top one. I'm looking forward to the next installment of Veya's story!
This is one of those YA books that can appeal to adult readers as well, especially if you like a feisty, stubborn young protagonist who’s falling in love against her own better judgment. The story is about 17 year old Aveyana, (Veya, for short,) who’s determined to find and save her mother after she was abducted from their home planet. Her mother is N'hreetian. Her father is human. And Veya is a hybrid who looks human but has the very interesting powers of her mother’s planet. She’s angry when her father takes her to Pangalax, a space station, where she has to hide her superior physical abilities as she tries to fit in with the humans. She breaks a lot of rules in her quest to find out what happened to her mom, and, in the process, uncovers secrets and political intrigue that pose very real danger to her and her father.
The first person, present tense narration is believable and makes the story feel more compelling. Veya’s stubbornness and teen-aged mixed emotions come through as she struggles to save her mother and tries to resist her growing attraction to a handsome officer who helps train her. You can feel how torn she is about her feelings for Kye because of the boyfriend she left behind on N'hreen.
From the get-go it’s obvious something is rotten on Pangalax but the story keeps you guessing about who’s the good guy and who’s the bad guy. A fast-paced read with lots of action and a cliff-hanger ending that leaves you wondering how it will play out in book 2 and book 3.
I was given an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest, non-reciprocal review.
I was hesitant in reading this book because I am not a science fiction, paranormal or urban fantasy kind of reader. I was told it was light a Sci-fi so I gave it a shot. It took me a while to get into it because growing up, we only had one TV in the living room so coming from a large family and being the youngest I had to watch what the older siblings wanted most often. But dad had major control. I used to have to watch Star Trek and I hated it with a passion because of my brother. This book reminds me somewhat of it because they are from Earth but living on a space station and fighting aliens.
I really enjoyed that the focus was more so on the teenagers and them learning life skills to help protect Earth and the space station. Yes the adults are the controlling aspect of the events happening but the kids are the ones trying to help each other to overcome the problems.
I like the budding friendship/relationship that develops between Veya and Kye even though she had to leave her on again/off again boyfriend Tash back at home on her mother's home planet. I can't wait to read the remainder of the trilogy to see what happens for Veya, Kye and Tash.
I recommend you give this book a read. I think you will get into the story of Veya and Kye and the turn of events that happen. See how the families make out after the plotting and planning is figured out. Let's see what happens with Veya, Kye and Tash. Waiting on book 2!
When I was offered to review this I was a bit weary as I have never read a Sci-Fi book before... They've never really taken my fancy but I thought i'd give it a go and I am so glad I did, I was totally hooked from the very first page and was unable to put it down until I finished it at gone 4am!
If you're sitting there thinking 'Sci-Fi isn't my thing' I urge you to give Pangalax a go... you will be hooked within the first chapter and screaming for more when it finishes
When her N'hreetian mother is abducted in an attack, 17 year old hybrid Veya is taken to Pangalax to hide out with her human father. Pangalax is a human space station that houses thousands of humans; from scientists, doctors & governors to military personnel... anything you would expect a country to have, Pangalax has it.
Having to keep her N'hreetian heritage and powers a secret, Veya is on a mission to find out what happened to her mother but with so many twists and turns, will Veya ever find out the truth or will her secrets be exposed.
There are so many twists and turns and 'I didn't see that comings that you will be unable to put down your kindle until you've found answers.
Seriously, this book was awesome... well thought out, brilliantly written and with characters you will love (and hate lol)
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
OMG can I just say I LOVED this book.!!!!!! seriously if your sceptical with regards reading a book based on aliens, don't be with Pangalax.!! I am so so glad I have read this, it's Brilliant...!
Sm Koz has a great way of writing, it was easy to read, i love the characters, Veya was amazing i adored her strong character, i felt quite sorry for her throughout the book, Kye is just every girls dream he really made this book, and i am desperate to see where his & veyas relationship goes in Earth Book 2...
I found there were times where I actually found myself laughing out loud, and then times especially towards the end where it was so sad...!
But I can't stress enough YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK...! It has everything Action, Paranormal events, Love, Twists and turns, And what a cliff Hanger..!!!!!
My only thing is when i turned that last page to be met with the name of book 2 Earth... coming in 2017 What 2 years why so long, we all have to wait 2 years when you leave a cliff hanger like that.?????? Whhaaatttt we may be dead by then.????????? i can't stress enough that this is too long to wait.!

This book caught my attention in the first paragraph. In most books you need a few chapters to get into the story, but not with Pangalax. It only took me a few sentences. I liked to read about her powers and the powers of the other aliens races. Because of her mothers missing she and her father went to Pangalax, a space station runned by humans. She and her father remained calm when their mother/wife went missing. It was a bit too calm and unrealistic. I missed the feeling of home and cosiness that I love to read about. Pangalax felt cold. Because we did not met the mother, I didn't felt the need or desperation to find her, so I did not care about the whole mission for information to find her. I did liked the romance in this book. The romance kept me reading, the guy is a real sweatheart, so thats a real plus. Although the book was good, but I am not desperate to read the second novel.
1st off, I won a copy of this book during an event, so these thoughts are all mine. Veya is a teenage hybrid, who is sent off to an Earth space station called Pangalax, after her alien mother is kidnapped. Her father thinking she'll be safe if she just blends in and doesn't use her powers. This is not the case.Veya being angry about leaving her boyfriend ( the only person she is sure understands her) proceeds to find trouble in what appears to be the most innocent of places. She joins the military in hopes of finding out more about what happened to her mother and along the way, finds a new (possible) love, if she can find it in herself to trust him. Pangalax starts off slow, I found myself putting it aside more than once in the 1st few chapters, DON'T STOP !!! It gets so much better and you will be looking forward to the next book I promise you !!.

Actual Rating: 4.05
I enjoyed this read. The world was great to explore and the action was great as well. The characters were great. Veya was likeable, but set homes confusing. I think I liked her more as the story progressed. The pace was good because the story kept me intrigued. I was sad when . I was shocked when . It is a great book to begin a new series. Can't wait to read the sequel, Earth. Thank you S.M. Koz for the opportunity to read this book. Can't wait to read more of your books in the future.
Aveyana is a halfbreed but when her mom gets kidnapped her father moves her to the Pangalax space station where she has to hide her identity from the humans. There is a plot going on that could put her and those she loves in danger but she has to first figure out just exactly who she can trust.
I really liked the story as a whole. Kye was a pure and simple heartthrob, I wanted to fall in love with him on the spot! I did not like how standoffish Aveyana was, but in the whole of the story I understand her reasonings. She was rash and quick to action but I also liked how she did it for all the right reasons.
love it!! ton's action going on. keep me on the edge of my seat. when you think you know who is behind it all nope it keep me guessing on what was going on! Veya she is sassy and funny she all-time kickass girl love her!! loved all of them in the story the whole crew! can't wait to read book 2..
Love this book...can’t wait to read the second book!
The world that the author portrays is uniquely designed to captivate you from the moment you “open” the book and keep you enthralled from the beginning to the end. Now here I am just waiting for number 2!
Note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
First, let me say that Pangalax is not one of those books that will immediately suck you in...but it is one of those books that you should give a chance to. By the middle of the book, I was on the edge of my seat, and veering towards "booksomnia" territory, with the need to find out what would happen next.
When I started reading this book, I felt confused because there was not much of a back story offered. For example, I wondered what was going on with people on Earth, why were people living on a space station, who were the good and bad alien races involved, and why was Veya's mom and her people kidnapped? I felt like I was walking into the movie theatre in the middle of a film, and trying to play catch up on the details. This feeling of frustration was not helped by the irritating actions and thoughts of the protagonist, Aveyana (Veya for short). She is defiant in every way, stuck on a guy who probably doesn't love her, and she is the queen of bad decisions. Basically, she is every teenager that ever thought she knew best.
However, as the story progressed, I started to feel a certain sense of affinity for Veya, whom I came to see as a strong, stubborn, and feisty young lady. Honestly, she reminded me of myself in my late teens and early twenties...anyone who has ever struggled against parental authority, or who felt torn between a childhood love, and feelings for a new partner who appeals more to the adult you are becoming, will be able to identify with Veya. Give her a chance, and I can almost promise that she will grow on you!
Throughout the story, Veya struggles with her half-human, half-alien parentage, and the necessity of keeping that a secret from her new friends, and from the relentless Kye Tarrington (all-human), with whom she shares a mutual attraction. This of course, is complicated by her feelings (mostly loyalty and obligation) to her all-alien childhood boyfriend. As she searches for answers about what happened to her mother, Veya uncovers layers of political deceit, scientific experiments that will make a reader question humanity, and a deeply ingrained culture of prejudice and fear of aliens, that might make a reader question their own beliefs and prejudices. All together, this is a great read for emerging adults, because it brings up many important societal questions under the guise of science fiction.
Most of the questions that had so frustrated me in the beginning, are answered over the course of the story. But, like any good author, Ms. Koz did leave me hanging on a few things. For example, what is the real reason that Veya's mom and her people are being kidnapped, and what is the ultimate plan for them? However, this lingering question ensures that I will buy the next installment of the Veya Trilogy....not to mention my hope that Veya will give into her feelings for the very intriguing Kye.
5 super Stars I had the privilege of reading this book and It's the first of this Authors work. I've not had an romance /Sci-fi boo klike this before it was grippy from the word go and The whole dynamic of the story just keeps your attention and your pulled in by the way these characters are. How Veyana is portrayed is fantastic I was a little sceptical about this book at first as I don't read a lot of romance /sci-fi's often it's been along time. SM Koz has Now drawn me in to this genre Romance with a mild Sci-fi twist I loved how this book just flowed and you had some moments when you thought it was going to be this way then Boom she just whipped that thought right out and your fulling down another path. I loved the Twists in this story they keep you wanting to turn the pages to find out more as you know there's something just niggling at your brain but can't put a finger on it yet. All I'll say is veya's mother got taken and she wants answers and meets kye when her father takes her to Pangalax for protection. I loved how this book was based on a young group and How it's not all about the abductions, It's about a group who work together and become friends trying to find there place/career on a space station and that little thing called Love along there way. Yes there is a cliffhanger but it's a cliffy that fitted this book to a T. After I finished my brain was stuck in space and thinking who's this what's happening next what can they find it just blow my mind wide open.
I'm now biting my tongue as I want the next book so bad lol The way this book just flips your mind more towards the end your start to feel your emotions react to this book, There's so much potential for many books to come from this one and I'm frantically waiting. I feel this book would be liked from none sci-fi lovers too, its gripping, easy to follow, not short, and intriguing & not predictable.
This book was given to me by the author in exchange for an honest review.
Amazing Book! S.M. Koz Blew me away with this one and I am one pins and needles to find out what comes next! I am a big fan of this genre and its been a while since I have been this fired up about a new book! the characters were incredible and the scenes where amazing! you were on your toes through out the whole book just knowing something else was just around the corner!
S.M. Koz has a incredible and flowing way of telling the story so that it seems seamless and you don't know your at the end until you suddenly find your self there.I never wanted my time in her world to end and I wanted to jump into the book and help out her characters time and time again.
Veya is a totally relatable character even with her alien side, she is the typical teen throwing tantrums and sneaking about. Kye trys to be the typical hard ass army Sargent but can't be around Veya and it gets them in all kinds of trouble...lol...what I like about the two of them is that they work well as a team no matter the things going on between them. Rescuing Veya's mother is the mission and nothing will stop Veya from finding out the truth.
One of the other things I loved about the book was that it took place on MARS! how cool is that! we didn't get to see or hear about it very much except that it was a barren cold place but That it reminded Veya of her home planet and the people she left behind was heart-rending and made the reasons for the trip even more real and poignant for me. The reasons for their being stationed there were interesting and came up quite a few times in the book and I wonder if it will be even more important in the following book.
This book was quite fantastic and I highly recommend it to one and all! get your copy today!

We all once in our lifetime wanted to look different. Change our hair color, our eye color. Maybe even our skin color. We all have wanted to be skinny or even add a little meat to our bones. Veya she is a hybrid. Although that sounds cool. She wants to look like her own people. I mean she can change the color of her eyes, her hair even. Just think it and boom it changes color. Who wouldn't want that? I know I would have a different hair color almost every day. Veya she lives with her mom, her dad he comes and goes from Pangalx. Veya thought she was living the normal teenage life on her home planet. She had a hot boyfriend Tash, they seemed to be great together. Then one day her life was turned upside down. No one and I mean no one wants to go through what she did. Her dad is there to try and pick up the pieces. This book has aliens, it has romance, it has teenage drama, and angst. It has a dad who didn't seem like he liked his daughter, but would jump through hoops for her. There is action. Not sexual action. No I mean fighting, hand to hand action. Veya she decided to join the Pangalx military so you get to read all about her training. The up's and down's of her journey will have you on the edge of your seat. I liked it. There might have been some slow times, but it picked right back up. Veya has sass, and she isn't afraid to show it. Her sass and smart mouth can get her into trouble though. I love Veya though. OMG don't get me started on Kye. He is a total book boyfriend. I will warn you now though. There is a cliffhanger. I am still sitting here wondering who on earth was sitting on the spacecraft waiting for her. I can't wait to read the next book.
MY GOD! That is so cruel. SM Koz is an author capable of inflicting horrible crueltys to her readers. I finished this book last night on my kindle. I wasn’t watching how much time I had left in it or what percentage I had left and I turn the page to see what happens and all I get is.
“Coming 2017. EARTH. The second book in the Veya Trilogy.”
Only for himself was asleep beside me I would have screamed. 2017?! Really? That is horrible. I have to wait at least a year and a half before I can get my hands on the next. As I said cruel, cruel, CRUEL.
As you can probably tell I loved this book. I am not normally a fan of Sci-fi but this isn’t heavily sci-fi. Take the book for what it is…a great story.
The characters both the main characters and the periphery characters are highly engaging.
While it is a yung adult book, me at 32 found myself drawn in by Veya and Kye’s relationship. Her restisance to him is something I think most women can relate to.
SM Koz’s writing is simple yet flows easily and paints vivid pictures. There were more than a few times my heart thumped and my stomach dropped with nerves. It’s a long book but I read it in two nights and I found it really hard to put down.
Another ace in the deck for indepent authors, I dare you to pick up this book and not like it. In fact, I double, triple, quadruple dare you to infinity to pick it up and not like it.
First off, let me say this: sci/if is not my go-to genre. So when I was offered an ARC of Pangalax, I was a bit hesitant. All hesitation left me as I started reading. I was literally pulled into this book from the first page and couldn't put it down. There's everything in Pangalax-Action? Check. Adventure? Check. Secrets? Check. Romance? Check. Constantly questioning the characters? Check. I was amazed at how much I loved this book.
SM Koz's writing is phenomenal. Ms. Koz explains the environment and each place so well and in perfect detail; I could see everything in my head. Her descriptions of each character and how they feel are spot on. I could feel Veya's emotions, her teenage angst, her rebellious side, but she also has a soft side to her as well. I felt her heart and head waging a war when falling for Kye. The secondary characters play a huge role in Pangalax. Sometimes, they can be left in the background. Not in this book and that made me enjoy it even more.
I wish I could go on but, I would start to spill spoilers. What I can say is, you need to one click this book when it comes out! Don't hesitate, don't let the genre scare you away. If I could give Pangalax 10 stars I would. That's how much I enjoyed this book! Pangalax is available on Amazon: http://amzn.to/1FA6dHx
First you need to know is that this book is a cliffhanger. A really good cliffy though. I'm not a fan but for a good book I'll be a good little girl and wait for the next in series.
I LOVE the characters, I love Veya and I love that there is so many things happening. It's a really interesting book and for alien fans it's perfect. I've just recently discovered my love for alien romances so this is a really perfect time to have read this book.
I have read SM Koz's first book and she made me love that one too. It really made an impact on me as had this one. I've been thinking for hours now about the next part of the story, who was that at the end (even though I suspect who HE is) and what will happen between Kye and Veya now. I really do hope they end up together. If not I will be disappointed.
All in all, I couldn't have been more happy when I received this book to review. And I will definitely recommend this book to my friends.
Also I hope the author hurries with the next one because I am not the most patient person out there. Not at all actually!
Intriguing and engaging YA/SF story, the first volume in a series. Koz introduces a number of interesting elements, and aliens, of which at this point we learn a little about the N'hreetians. Our Veya is a girl, half-human and half-N'hreetian, with amazing but limited powers. Her story is one of mystery and crisis, in fact she seems to stumble from one crisis into the next, while the reader wrestles with what is *really* going on. (One of the great things about this book is the realistic limited nature of Veya's understanding and guesswork.) Of course there are boys, I mean young men, in her life... especially Kye! Characterization is very good, plot fascinating and the pace is fairly quick. As a life-long SF fan I found the mirror earth concept a little unconvincing, but otherwise the SF setting was great, and the multi-strand politics very realistic. Because the book is only volume one, of course there's somewhat of a cliffhanger ending, but enough has been resolved to make it a reasonably satisfying read. I just can't wait for the story to continue...
I admit, I devour this genre (young adult sci-fi/dystopian/vampires/etc) - when I read them it’s like a treat or mini-vacation. Typically what they have in common is great ideas and imagination, but really (really) bad writing. Pangalax was very different - it had the rare combination of compelling storytelling and all the fun ideas I love so much about this type of genre. Not only were the setting (in the near-future) and the new technologies (all the “sci-fi” goodies) well imagined and described, the character development was fantastic. I really believed the friendships and romantic relationships as they developed - the pacing was great. The only negative was that it ended on a bit of a cliff-hanger and now I have to wait for the second book in the trilogy! I highly recommend Pangalax - it’s far as above your typical young-adult offering. For context, I am a huge reader of ALL genres (check my Goodreads ratings) and am a 40 years old woman :P
I love a good science fiction story and this story has it all. Different worlds, various species, hot guys, and a stubborn girl that always gets in trouble. Plus, it’s a trilogy so I have 2 more books to read. Yay!!! Veya’s character is interesting and bold, but always making bad decisions. Kye is more intriguing because as the story moves along you do know if he is good or bad. In fact, there are several people that are questionable whether they are good or bad. I enjoyed this story very much and look forward to book 2.
This is the best YA SF I've read this year. The world building is amazing and SM Koz has thought of everything to the smallest detail when it comes to describing alien races and the setting. As I was reading it, I was so immersed in the story that I felt like I was in it. There's a lot of mystery and action throughout the book where Veya tries her own hand at sleuthing. There's also a swoon worthy book boyfriend, Kye, who trains her and she's unsure if she can trust him. I really can't wait to read the next book and hope it comes out soon!
Loved it! Can't wait for the next book to come out to continue the adventures with Veya and Kye. I'm a middle-aged adult but found this young adult book very accessible to a varied audience and really enjoyed it. I'd call it a page-turner but I read it on my Kindle app, so I guess I can call it a page swiper! It's definitely a "good read" and I highly recommend it.
EPIC SCI-FI ADVENTURE!!! I loved this! absolutely amazing! This was such a cool blend of sci-fi, adventure, mystery and romance I can't even... Veya was a extremely likable main character and I really felt for her through everything she experience! The ending was such a rush, I couldn't stop reading. One night I even didn't go to sleep and finished it in the wee morning hours. Pick this up!
This is a must read rather you are you like this type of book or not. It was an amazing read! I love the characters, I love the story line, it is very well written, and very enjoyable. There is action, romance, sci-fi, and so much more. I highly recommend you read this book, you will love it!
I can't wait for the next book. This was a fun read. Kept me interested from the beginning. Sci-iris not typically a genre I enjoy but the storyline transcended the setting
