Starting off, I was hooked from the Prologue. This is a dark academia with society elite, exclusive families they referred to as “legacies” and a haunted history of the Academy dating back 50 years to a student incident that was ruled a suicide. I liked the rich kids coming from family money angle, it was intriguing from the start.
The story unravels an unfortunate incident that occurred 50 years ago, with spooky ghost hauntings and additional deaths occurring every 3 years. Our FMC Wren stays in the room of the alleged ghost and unravels what happened all those years ago. I would say the relationship building and slow burn forbidden romance took center stage, while the ghost and dark academia aspects taking a side stage seat. I still felt invested and drawn in by the story, I enjoyed seeing two star crossed students with a slow burn romance find one another despite what their families wanted. Well, more it was his family ;) I do wish there was more suspense in this book, more with the ghost and more time spent on that park of the story. Every time a secret was revealed, it felt a bit easy for it to be discovered and quick, not many obstacles arose. Aside from this, I thought this was a great story and I truly enjoyed it! If you enjoy high society and exclusivity academia, ghost and suspenseful spooky happenings, you would enjoy this book! 4 stars!

So, apparently, all you need to do to make me happy is to give me a dark academia novel featuring a prestigious New England academy, some old-money families behaving badly, a secret society, a fifty-year-old suspicious death, an actual ghost, AND a forbidden slow-burn romance, See? It doesn’t take much!
As you may be able to tell, I really liked A Study in Shadows.
Wren Holloway, a newly enrolled legacy student at Ravenshore Academy, arrives at her new school and is promptly assigned to a dorm room that has been sealed shut for fifty years, since the last student who lived in it, Blythe Olsen, died in an incident that was ruled a suicide. That by itself is enough to hook me. Then Blythe’s ghost shows up.
As Wren is trying to figure out what actually happened to Blythe, the situation is complicated by one Kit Thorne: broody, privileged, complicated, very much off-limits, and increasingly interested in Wren despite some fairly significant family objections.
I received this book over a month ago, but a combination of good and pretty difficult circumstances delayed my reading of it. But once I started, it did that thing that really good books do - helped me get out of my own head, and into the story. I will say that while the mystery drew me in, it was the characters that kept me reading. Wren is smart, funny, and capable without giving off the vibe that strength equals never needing anyone (a hard distinction to make). Her friendships with Ollie, June, and Meg are warming, and give the story a found-family warmth that works surprisingly well among all of those dark hallways and and hidden secrets. Grandma Iris gets her own mention here too because I love her.
But, the undeniable focus of the book is Wren and Kit. I really appreciate that their relationship is given enough time to develop into an actual relationship. Kit himself is just the kind of love interest that I love myself: broody and untouchable on the surface, but completely and totally into Wren underneath it. I especially loved that his feelings for her were shown in actions, not just words, by paying attention to and listening to her, respecting her strength, and slowly letting her see the person he really is beneath all his privilege and family expectation. The relationship they build has banter and attraction, of course, but also friendship, conversation, and the sense that these two people really get each other. The slow burn is very slow, and I mean that in a good way.
As a reader of book reviews, I like to understand what kind of book I’m getting before I add it to my TBR. In this book, the ghost story, secret society, and old mystery create atmosphere and give Wren something to investigate, but the romance and relationships get much more space. If you go in expecting a mystery with a touch of romance, this may not be quite that book.
If, however, you like dark academia, old-money family drama, forbidden romance, morally gray rich boys, capable heroines, found family, secret societies,a ghost, a mystery to unravel, and the agony of waiting for a long (long) time for two people who are obviously obsessed with each other to finally DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT...
Yeah. This is your book, and you should come talk to me after you read it, because it’s my book too.

I genuinely cannot recommend this book enough.
Every once in a while, you read a book that reminds you exactly why you love reading. A Study in Shadows by Rachel Lynn was that book for me.
This book was phenomenal.
It gave me the addictive feeling I had when I first discovered Zodiac Academy, the kind where you become completely consumed by the world and its characters and suddenly nothing matters except finding out what happens next, but honestly? I loved this even more.
Wren is an absolute baddie of a FMC. She's strong and fierce, but there's so much more to her than that. She has heart. She has depth. She has people she loves fiercely, and watching her navigate everything thrown at her made it impossible not to become completely invested in her story.
And Kit. Oh, Kit.
I have a feeling a LOT of readers are about to have a new favorite book boyfriend. The chemistry between Wren and Kit is incredible. The banter, the tension, the little moments that slowly build into something more…THIS is how you write a slow burn. Nothing felt rushed or forced. Rachel Lynn lets you ache for it, and somehow that makes every interaction between them even better.
But what truly took this from a five-star book to a six-star read for me was the friendship.
Wren, Ollie, and June have the kind of friendship that made my heart hurt in the best possible way. Then Meg came along and somehow made me love this little found family even more.
These friendships aren't just there to fill the space around the romance. They are an essential part of Wren's story. They're loyal, funny, protective, messy, and full of genuine love. There were so many moments when I found myself thinking, I hope everyone gets to experience a friendship like this at least once in their life. That's what made this book so special to me.
Yes, the romance is chef's kiss.
Yes, the banter is fantastic.
Yes, the slow burn was slowly burninggggg.
Yes, I kept telling myself "one more chapter" and then immediately broke that promise.
But underneath all of that is a story about people you genuinely come to care about. By the end, Wren, Kit, Ollie, June, and Meg didn't just feel like characters I had been reading about. I felt attached to them.

The romance aspect of this novel is a slow burn, deep desire romance that builds surrounded by mystery, crime, family, and a ghost story. Author Rachel Lynn has a way with slow burn romance stories that have you yearning for their connection as much as they do. Her build-up is intense, in a good way, and she doesn't disappoint when the sparks finally fly. The spice of this book, I'd say, is 4 🌶. Open door intimacy without overly descriptive language. She also has a way of writing these MMC to contradict stereotypical macho men. (See The Constellation Lounge also.) Kit, the MMC starts off mysterious and broody. He's built, he's beautiful, and he's untouchable. He pursues her. As he slowly opens up to Wren, without ever losing his sexy masculinity, you see a passionate, tender, sweet, let me take care of you side that only doubles his sex appeal. Wren, MFC, is a smart, quick, witty character who holds her own and isn't focused on finding romance, yet it finds her.
The dark academia, haunting ghost story aspect is well written. While parts of the overall mystery are slightly predictable, the fun is in their journey to discovering things. The little details are what isn't predictable and is where the story is built. Ghostly encounters with Blythe, secret hiding spots, clues to solve, threats against Wren, what happens when they get too close?
I finished the book, and I want more!! The end does not leave you on a cliffhanger. It just left me wanting more time with everyone. This is a standalone novel. But just like The Constellation Lounge, I'll beg for a sequel to this!

Set in a college setting with characters in their mid-20s, A Study in Shadows follows Wren and Kit as they find themselves digging into an unsolved murder from 50 years ago. You get dark academia, secret societies, a decades-old mystery, and, of course, Wren and Kit slowly falling for each other along the way. There was already so much here that had me interested, but their relationship completely sold me on this book.
Their tension, banter, and playfulness had me smiling and giggling way too much.
I really loved Wren as an FMC. She’s headstrong, capable, and not afraid to stand her ground, but we also get to see a softer side of her as the story progresses. I especially loved that she never felt overshadowed by Kit. They both have such strong personalities, and watching them go back and forth with each other was honestly one of my favorite parts of the book.
And then there’s Kit. 😂 He is exactly the kind of MMC I love—confident, no-nonsense, knows what he wants, and maybe just a little obsessed with Wren. I loved watching his feelings for her grow and seeing how being with her made him actually want to be better. His commitment to her had me smiling throughout the entire book.
I also loved the little interlude chapters from Kit’s POV! Getting those short glimpses into what he was thinking added so much, especially while watching their relationship develop.
There is spice, but I really appreciated that it actually made sense within the story. It never felt like spice was being thrown in just for the sake of having it. Those moments felt like a natural part of the progression of Wren and Kit’s relationship, which made me enjoy them even more.
My one small wish is that we could have gotten a little more of the investigation/spooky side of the story. There were some really interesting parts involving the Brotherhood and the mystery surrounding it that I would have loved to see explored even further.
But truly, I just had SO much fun reading this. I loved Wren and Kit individually, but I especially loved who they were together. Their personalities, their chemistry, and watching their relationship grow had me smiling throughout the entire book.
I hoard my five stars a little bit. 😂 I save them for the books where I genuinely loved the entire reading experience and found something about the story that stood out to me, and this was absolutely one of them.

Thank you so much to Rachel Lynn for the ARC of this book! I genuinely don’t know how she keeps coming out with new favorites, but she has officially done it again. *A Study in Shadows* was EVERYTHING. I read this over my a pre-fall weather weekend in a cabin on a lake and let me tell you… the vibes were there.
First of all, dark academia + spooky vibes + secret societies + a 50-year-old murder mystery + a ghost + an absolutely delicious slow-burn romance?! This book was basically made for me. I was hooked almost immediately and completely consumed by the story. The mystery kept me guessing, and I loved how seamlessly the paranormal elements were woven into everything. Nothing felt overdone, it all just WORKED.
And Wren… I loved her. She is such a badass FMC, but she also has so much heart and depth. Watching her navigate everything thrown at her while fiercely loving and protecting the people around her made it impossible not to become completely invested in her story.
And Kit. OHHHH, KIT. 😍 The chemistry between him and Wren was EVERYTHING. The banter, the tension, the little moments that slowly build into something more… THIS is how you write a slow burn. Rachel Lynn had me absolutely aching for these two, and somehow every tiny interaction made me want more.

I read this over my a pre-fall weather weekend in a cabin on a lake and let me tell you… the vibes were there.
First of all, dark academia + spooky vibes + secret societies + a 50-year-old murder mystery + a ghost + an absolutely delicious slow-burn romance?! This book was basically made for me. I was hooked almost immediately and completely consumed by the story. The mystery kept me guessing, and I loved how seamlessly the paranormal elements were woven into everything. Nothing felt overdone, it all just WORKED.
And Wren… I loved her. She is such a badass FMC, but she also has so much heart and depth. Watching her navigate everything thrown at her while fiercely loving and protecting the people around her made it impossible not to become completely invested in her story.
And Kit. OHHHH, KIT. 😍 The chemistry between him and Wren was EVERYTHING. The banter, the tension, the little moments that slowly build into something more… THIS is how you write a slow burn. Rachel Lynn had me absolutely aching for these two, and somehow every tiny interaction made me want more.

I absolutely LOVED this book. I was hooked from the beginning and stayed up way too late because I couldn’t put it down.
The characterization was one of my favorite parts. Wren is strong-willed, independent, fiercely loyal, and incredibly devoted to her family and friends. I loved watching her slowly learn that letting someone help and care for her doesn’t make her any less strong.
And Kit? ❤️ He was such a fantastic character. I loved watching him fight against the expectations and darkness surrounding his family while slowly letting Wren see the person underneath his guarded exterior. Their chemistry, banter, and relationship were SO good!
I also loved getting Kit’s perspective through the interludes. I’m always a fan of multiple perspectives, especially when I’m this invested in both characters.

I really enjoyed A Study in Shadows by Rachel Lynn. This is a dark, atmospheric New England mystery set along the coast of Maine, with a powerful family, and a secret brotherhood woven into the story.
Wren and Kit were the standouts for me. Wren is sassy, a little bold, and not nearly as intimidated by Kit as everyone else seems to be. I especially enjoyed their first interaction and the banter that followed. There were moments between them that actually reminded me of hanging out with my friends in college, which gave their relationship a natural, familiar feel.
Kit is strong and protective, but he’s also dealing with the expectations that have been placed on him and trying to figure out what he wants for his own life. I liked watching that play out as his relationship with Wren developed.
The romance is a slow burn, but it worked for me. The chemistry builds naturally, and the spice level felt like a good balance—it added to the relationship without taking over the story.

A Study in Shadows completely hooked me from the very first line. It grabbed my attention immediately and never really let go. This was one of those books where I kept telling myself “just one more chapter” until suddenly I was much farther into the story than I planned.
The dialogue felt incredibly natural, which made the characters easy to connect with and the relationships believable. One of my favorite aspects of the book was the way the mystery unfolded. It almost felt like there was a story hidden inside another story, and I found myself equally invested in uncovering the truth behind the mystery as I was in following the main characters’ journey.
The romance was another highlight. It developed at a realistic pace, never feeling forced or rushed, which made the emotional moments land even better.
If I had to point out one small criticism, it would be the repeated mentions of the town gossip surrounding someone the FMC loved. It was clear those rumors deeply affected her, but I kept waiting for more clarity about what exactly had happened or why that person had become the subject of so much speculation. It wasn’t enough to take away from my enjoyment, but it did leave me wanting a bit more explanation.

If you want slow burn romantic tension with distinct and relatable characters, set in a school full of history and ghost stories, A Study in Shadows might just be for you. These two MCs drew me in until I was up irresponsibly late, just waiting to see if or when they would kiss. I loved that even though the slow burn is SLOW, their friendship is real and the author doesn’t use the miscommunication trope to break them up at any point. They even have conversations about their feelings like adults.
The ghost story element felt like a B plot, but let's face it, it is. While it was intended to have a dark, eerie, and spooky atmosphere, the experience leans much more into a wholesome and cozy vibe—making even the tenser moments feel intriguing and sweet.
The character development shines as the characters grow to accept their desires and break generational cycles. The protagonist is deeply relatable, particularly in her struggles to balance school, life, and the heavy strains of family obligations. While her intense drive to solve a 50-year-old murder over her caretaking duties felt slightly disconnected at times to me, the well-rounded characters keep you completely invested. The supporting friend group is memorable and adds an impressive layer of depth, exploring the beautiful theme of found family.

The plot had me hooked pretty early on. There were definitely some parts that felt a little predictable, and I would’ve loved to see a little more of the clue-hunting when it came to figuring out what happened to Blythe. I think having to work a little harder for some of those clues would’ve added even more suspense to the story!
BUT there were a couple things in this book that genuinely creeped me out!! 😳 There were a few scenes where I absolutely did NOT expect something to happen, and suddenly I’m looking over my shoulder like… 👀 This book is also coming out at the perfect time for spooky season, and that’s all I’m going to say about that. 👻

Beautifully blended with a fifty year old mystery, some decidedly spooky moments, and friendships that were an absolute joy to witness.. I loved every minute of this book!
The close relationship between Wren and her gran is so special and I simply loved watching how much Wren and her friends genuinely enjoyed spending time with her gran (who is an absolute firecracker).
I've always had a strange obsession /draw to Maine and books/stories set in that area, so combine that with an academic setting AND a ghost story and I couldn't be happier!
There's so many pieces that when combined together make this book so special... The slow burn and banter between Wren and Kit, the unbelievable bond that Wren shares with her friends Ollie and June, the deliciously spooky atmosphere of various spots around campus, especially Wrens tower apartment that just happens to be the room that Blythe lived in all those years ago...

I absolutely loved A Study in Shadows! This had so many things I love: dark academia, a decades-old mystery, ghosts, secret societies, family secrets, and a really good slow-burn romance.
I loved Wren. She’s smart, sassy, stubborn, and definitely not afraid to get involved in things she probably shouldn’t. I also loved how much her friendships and family mattered throughout the story. And Kit!! 👀 The banter and chemistry between these two were SO good. I especially loved that their relationship actually took time to develop. We got the tension, little moments, and all the waiting that makes a slow burn worth it.
The mystery surrounding Blythe and everything happening at Ravenshore kept me just as interested as the romance. Honestly, I could’ve taken even more of the spooky investigation because I loved that part! The mystery surrounding Blythe and everything happening at Ravenshore kept me just as interested as the romance. Honestly, I could’ve taken even more of the spooky investigation because I loved that part! This was one of those books where “one more chapter” turned into several. 😂 And I really appreciated getting a satisfying ending while still finishing the book wishing I had more time with these characters.

I loved every single thing about this book. An immediate 5 star read! I had such a hard time putting it down, I wanted to devour it in one sitting.
Kit may be one of my absolute favorite book boyfriends. I was giggling and grinning at my kindle throughout the whole book. The relationship between him and Wren is absolutely breathtaking. The pacing that their relationship developed and the quips between them were perfect! - “What makes you think I’m a gentleman, Starling? There’s nothing gentle about what’s going on in my head right now.” 🔥🔥🔥
Wren’s sense of family was beautiful. Not just her relationship with Grandma Iris, but with her found family as well (Ollie, June, and Meg). I loved seeing Wren’s light shine when she was surrounded by those that she loved most. Grandma Iris was easily one of my favorite characters in the whole book!
The mystery of Blythe Olsen was perfect. The pacing leading up to Wren figuring out the truth was spot on. Nothing felt too rushed, the story flowed at a great pace.

This was an incredibly well-written dark academia paranormal romance that managed to give me pretty much everything I wanted: forbidden love, a slow burn, heat, ghosts, secret societies, political intrigue and even a little found family thrown in for good measure.
I especially loved that this is a standalone. The pacing felt tight without sacrificing the story and the interlude chapters from Kit’s POV added so much depth to both his character and the overall mystery.
And that ghost story? 👻 I was absolutely here for it.
Rachel Lynn also has a knack for writing characters who feel approachable and human without making them shallow. Wren is sarcastic, witty and more than capable of holding her own, while Kit has that detached, complicated energy that makes you want to dig deeper into what’s really going on beneath the surface.
The combination of dark academia atmosphere, paranormal mystery and romance worked beautifully for me. If you like your romance with secrets, shadows, forbidden attraction and a little haunting on the side, this one is worth picking up.

What originally attracted me to this story was two tropes I always enjoy, an academia setting and secret society and it did not disappoint.
We start off by meeting our FMC Wren who is headed back to the town she grew up in to help her grandmother who was recently diagnosed with an illness and to attend an elite school for families of high social standing. Her family social status is part of her she does not know well, as her parents decided to leave and raise her on the west coast to get away from it all.
The academy is full of secrets and one of those secrets is Kit, the so-called prince of Ravenshore academy. The banter between Wren and Kit was one of my favorite aspects of this book as it was written so well. As Wren makes new friends and learns more about the secrets of Ravenshore, it isn't long before her past and the past of another former member of the school start to intertwine into a fantastic mystery.
A study in shadows was filled with great banter, the mystery of missing students and faculty, true friendships, the ultimate slow burn romance, and a touch of the paranormal that is worth the read!

And then there’s Wren and Kit. Their romance is deliciously slow-burning, with banter that had me completely invested. Their chemistry made me desperately want to see them get their HEA!
This book pulled me in from the beginning and kept me turning pages, and I loved getting lost in all the secrets, mystery, romance, and dark academia vibes.

Five ⭐️’s !!!!!
It hooked me in from the first page! It was fast paced and very hard to put down. Started and finished in less than a week.
Dark Academia, Mystery, buried secrets, romance all set in a college in New England.
FMC, Wren , goes back to New England to help her grandmother ( she’s a peach) and attends the college. There is a 50 year old mystery she is pulled (by a ghost) to figure out. She meets new friends and one of them is Kit, MMC, which you get to hear his POV in a few chapters (loved this).
This story is spooky and perfect for spooky season. It has all the vibes I look for in a dark Academia story. It also has romance and just a touch of 🌶️ (I loved it wasn’t over the top).

This is the 3rd book I have ARC read for her and it’s another amazing book!! I she is one of my most favorite authors!!! I will read anything she hands me no questions asked!!
This book did hit very close to home for me so I actually did tear up and had to pause my reading to not cry. It’s not a sad book but due to a health condition my mother had it made me more sensitive to the topic. Regardless the book is amazing!!
I LOVED how she ended the book. It was so well written and left me satisfied!! Of course I would love for more books with Kit and Wren but this end left me feeling happy and satisfied!!!

I love a good slow burn and let me tell you, it was INCREDIBLE. I was kicking my feet under the sheets. I had such a hard time putting this book down, and when I did, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I teared up quite a bit throughout the book
The story takes place at the haunting, atmospheric campus of Ravenshore Academy along the coast of Maine. We follow Wren Holloway as she returns home to care for her ailing grandmother, only to find herself deeply ensnared in solving the mystery of a 50 year old murder.

I love some good banter and tension in my reads, and this book had it in spades. This was a very solid 4-star read for me, and I really enjoyed my time with this story.
The FMC was strong and sassy, which complimented the MMC so well and created such a great dynamic between them. The romance of the book did feel like the main driving force of the story. The friendships in this book were so endearing, and I especially loved Wren’s relationship with her grandmother. I had a couple tears, and may or may not have stopped reading to call my own grandma.
The story was an easy and addictive read that kept me turning the pages. For my personal taste, I do wish it had been a bit darker in atmosphere and more suspenseful for the murder mystery part, but I still really appreciated the story and thought it was a good read overall.
