What happens when Sex and the City meets Grey's Anatomy? That's the premise of Burning the Short White Coat. Elle Gallagher is a spunky first year med student embarking on her journey to become a doctor at a prestigious Midwestern medical school. But while the academically gifted Elle may have found what seems like the perfect career, it's clear she still has much to learn about finding a man. Confronting the realities of her rigorous medical school training while trying to maintain her need for male companionship, the ambitious Elle is soon immersed in a world of cadaver dissections, exhausting study marathons, resident hazing and encounters with patients ranging from the heartbreaking to the hilarious. But when her search for romantic interaction leads Elle and her friends to a masochistic night of speed dating, she accidentally stumbles into the arms of Missouri's biggest playboy, an incident that damages her self esteem, threatens her studies and launches her on a roller coaster ride of self discovery. Burning the Short White Coat is a coming-of-age novel that explores the personal struggle a single woman must face when balancing a demanding career in medicine with the desire to find a trusting and loving relationship.
Loved this novel, the book leaves you wanting more. Elle is a medical student who is hilarious, witty, sexy and a "tell it like it is" type of woman, in the first few chapters Elle describes dissecting a cadaver and chopping up a penis! I just about fell out of my chair laughing. This novel is definitely not like other medical novels where they shy away from describing medical procedures, instead Elle seems to thrive on the grueling details of her chosen profession. As a nurse myself, I enjoyed her book and found it hard to put down. I can see why this novel has been compared to Sex in the City and Grey's Anatomy, only this novel is a bit more funnier and sexier. Shvidler's tale of Elle's journey thru med school, her romances, and description of the struggles Elle faced as a young woman are inspiring. This novel should be a must read for all young women who are striving to meet their goals in life. The overall message of Shvidler's novel is, yes! young women can have it all, career, romance, and lots of laughter along the way. Looking forward to another novel by Eve Shvidler.
Their are so many things that make this and interesting book to me. I can't beleive the number of characters in this book that are similar to people I have encountered throught the years.
I really enjoyed this book! Though I didn't go to medical school, my husband and I were married during his first year and I was able to relate to so much of the story. Eve brought back vivid memories of all the social drama; stress; highs; lows; insane, and often hilarious, patient stories; and intensity of those years. It was very entertaining and so well written.
A very engaging story of a group of young women on their journey to adulthood. For 2 of the friends, the story told of the pain, tears and joy of learning to be a doctor. Their experiences nudged them into adulthood and the trials and tribulations fortified them to be healers. Well worth reading.
I absolutely loved this book!!! It gives a great look into balancing the life of a medical worker with life outside of work. It is funny, thought provoking and full of wonderfully developed characters. A little love, laugh and medicine!!!
