How could something bad feel this warm and fuzzy?

This seemingly sweet friends to lovers took a dark turn real fast. With a similar vibe to Killing Stalking (IYKYK), what starts out as two loners finding a person they can connect with, quickly devolves into an obsessive toxic codependent relationship. With a side of captivity.

I can’t even lie to myself anymore and pretend I’m still doing this because I want to live. I’m doing it because for the first time in a hot minute I actually feel something that isn’t the always-present feeling of wanting to actually die.

On top of the very dark ‘romance’, Meet Cute also explores a series of other heavy themes, that were at times a struggle to read. So what little cuteness I found at the beginning of their story was very much snuffed out around the halfway mark.

“I need you here… J-Just until you love me, too.” ‌‌‌‌‌ “And if I don’t?”
“You will. I know you will.”

But what was lacking for me the most, and what didn’t make me fully enjoy this read, was the romance. Either because the characters needed more work, or Finneas was all over the place, or the fact that beyond the obsessiveness and Duncan just giving up — you really can’t feel an emotional connection between these two. The ‘love’ story didn’t work for me, and neither did the spice.

I’ve fallen for the man who took my already ruined life and destroyed it even further.

I feel like there were too many things going on, too much darkness packed in, that there wasn’t a way to actually enjoy any part of the supposed romance trying to happen underneath the hurt and mind break.

“I’ll always find you. You’re mine, and I’m yours.”

I really enjoyed Heat Haze by this author, and thinking about it, the difference is that that book had likeable characters. For a captivity/dark romance to work, you gotta sorta like the bad guy, right? But Finn? Yeah, I wasn’t a fan.

Overall, I can see what the author was going for with this one, and with better characters this would’ve been a more entertaining experience for me personally.

We’re really going to be together forever, aren’t we? What could be better than that? I really don’t know why I ever wanted to leave.

First off, I'd like to say that I'm glad I read the content warnings before I started Meet Cute by Alder Snow. We're warned it's an MM dark romance. Yet at one point, the author's letter to the reader in the beginning of the book, it's even mentioned that with a few edits, this could've been a horror novel. After reading it, let me tell you, it's absolutely a Dark Horror Romance. Is that a thing? Maybe Alder is on to something? But, before I continue, I'd like to give my appreciation to them and the Gay Romance Review for providing me with an advanced reading copy. I don't know if I would have read this otherwise.

Meet Cute delivers the most psychotic level of love bombing I've ever thought could have existed. This is fiction, but I'm pretty sure there are people like Finn, who would literally do ANYTHING to make someone like Duncan, love them. This is a Stockholm Syndrome love story between two mentally ill people, although no real diagnoses are named. I honestly feel that even people as depressed or psychotic as these two characters are, they deserve love too.

If only it could've been done in a healthier way. But does that make their love any less real? That remains to be seen. When reading the authors note, they share they are neurodivergent and have BPD. That's Borderline Personality Disorder if you don't know. I also have BPD and was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder as well, but fortunately with therapy and medication, my symptoms are in remission. I say all that to say this.. this book had me bawling out crying!!

I had to stop reading every few chapters because I sympathized and empathized with both characters. The horror aspect came in with Finn's treatment of Duncan. It got a little Stephen King-ish and my jaw dropped a few times in disbelief of what was I reading. Nevertheless, I finished it. No matter how it made me feel, I needed to know how it ended! And that's what makes a great story! Would I recommend this book? Yeah, but please read the entire book, including the Afteward.

Reading Alder's thoughts and reasoning, helped me understand the story better. All in all I give it 4⭐, because while the story is on some other stuff, it's a relatable story worth reading! If you have mental illness and find yourself super emotional like I was, before you think of DNF-ing, maybe give yourself a break and read something lighter in between? Or have someone to talk to while you read it in case you do get triggered. You won't regret it, but as always do what's best for you!

ARC Review

I knew exactly what I was getting myself into when I picked up this ARC or at least I thought I did.

The first few chapters felt surprisingly cute and fluffy, but then the story took a sharp, dark turn that completely changed everything.

One thing became very clear: Duncan's biggest mistake was believing Finn was harmless.

Because Finn is anything but harmless. He's a cute psycho.

Meet Cute follows Duncan, whose coming out creates a painful rift within his family. While trying to escape everything and find some comfort, he meets Finn, a shy, awkward salesman who seems sweet on the surface.

But there's nothing harmless about a man who's been starved of affection for so long.
What starts as friendship quickly spirals into obsession.

Then comes a kidnapping. Broken legs. a cat with no owner.

And what can only be described as a deeply twisted love story. Finn isn't ready and probably never will be to let Duncan go.

His love is desperate, shameless, obsessive, and suffocating. He craves affection, fears abandonment and becomes almost childlike whenever things don't go his way. Despite how unsettling he is, there were moments when I genuinely pitied him because of how desperately he wanted to be loved.

Duncan, on the other hand, is simply too good. Even after everything he endures, he's still thoughtful of Finn's feelings. As someone battling depression and carrying his own emotional wounds, Duncan's need to feel needed makes it easier for him to ignore the countless red flags standing right in front of him.

Watching him slowly fall for someone who kidnapped him was both fascinating and disturbing.

This book is dark, twisted, uncomfortable and genuinely makes you question your own morals.

I loved every minute of it. If you're looking for a wholesome romance, this isn't it.

But if you're looking for an obsessive, psychologically intense MM romance with a cute psycho you'll never forget, Meet Cute absolutely delivers.

I just finished Meet Cute and I genuinely don't even know what to say. I loved this book SO MUCH. Like I have no real critiques because I was literally just sitting there reading like 👁️👁️ WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT???

Duncan being at his lowest, then meeting Finn, and slowly learning more about just how absolutely INSANE this man is. Finn is SO unpredictable, you genuinely NEVER know what he's going to do next, and I was constantly on edge waiting for him to completely lose his mind 💀The biggest thing I noticed was how different Duncan felt during that final escape. Something was clearly OFF. Even though he said he loved Finn, there was always a part of him that questioned Finn and his actions. His mind would wander. But by the end??? He's suddenly SO optimistic about their relationship, and it felt so out of character

AND THEN WE FIND OUT FINN WAS DRUGGING HIM??? SINCE THEN??? 😭😭😭 EVERYTHING MAKES SENSE NOW. And THEN, you reach the ending. It's abrupt, but honestly I think it works incredibly well. It's "unsatisfying" because Duncan doesn't escape, especially when it feels like the entire story is building toward him getting away, BUT THAT'S THE POINT!!

Also... the spicy scenes??? HELLO???? 🌶️🌶️🌶️🔥

I REALLY didn't expect to enjoy the darker themes in this book as much as I did 😭 Like... I unlocked a part of herself that I didn't even know existed??? 💀 I went into this thinking I'd probably be uncomfortable with some of the darker aspects, but I was actually SO invested. The messed-up dynamics and the darker themes made the story SO much more interesting to me. Apparently this is my thing now? 🫣

Anyway. I loved this book. My first ever arc!! It's unsettling, psychological, complicated, and SO much more layered than I expected. I'm going to be thinking about this for an unreasonable amount of time.

I have read a couple of similar books to Meet Cute, most more murdery, but for some reason this book just left me so unsettled. Absolutely unhinged and completely insane. Definitely check the trigger warnings and proceed with caution! It isn’t a gory story, or at least I didn’t think so, but it’s still a nightmare of a tale. Psychological mindfuck if you will.
Finn lures you in with his meek, sweet, shyness and then does a 180 so fast your head will spin. I expected it, obviously, but I didn’t expect the complete disassociation from reality or the severe mood swings. Finn was creepy af. And Duncan. Poor Duncan. That boy was doomed from the start. He experiences abandonment from his family and slips into a pretty deep depression. He befriends Finn and then it’s all downhill from there. There is a heavy display of suicidal ideation and intent that is prevalent throughout the story on Duncan’s end, as well as a lot of mind breaking/brainwashing. It was honestly sad how their relationship developed and I would have liked to see a different ending for Duncan. I think the ending was the most unsettling part of the entire mess. These boys both need some serious mental health support!
I do recognize that it is a work of fiction, and I mean, I read the entire book in one sitting, so it wasn’t awful. Just honestly so different from anything I’ve read. I didn’t hate it and don’t regret the read; I just don’t think I’ll ever reach for it again. My anxiety was through the roof! The author portrayed some of the darkness of mental health really well and was able to make me sympathize with each character at different points. Meet cute was a wild, wild ride. Give it a try if you’re looking for something darker, with a different kind of HEA.

Meet Cute
Alder Snow

Finn & Duncan

DARK MM Romance
Starts off sweet and innocent
Cry baby top
Rock bottom MC
Stockholm syndrome

SO, ok wow, this was darker than Alder Snow’s first book Heat Haze, which I absolutely adored.

This truly started out sweet and innocent and turned… obsessive, possessive, dark, toxic but also… sweet?

I think I was expecting this to turn sweet again? I was anxious reading this, not in a bad way, you just are sort of shocked, I think, when reading any type of Stockholm/dark books. You wonder if this will… well, without spoiling what occurs, you hope it gets better

This ends in a hea? I think? But it’s still a very toxic romance for sure.

Read the triggers for sure.

This reminds me of all the old horror movies I watched as a kid from the 80s, but this one has sweet and tender romance in it lol

Finn is so, so lonely. He had a horrible upbringing, and I think he was shown nothing but abuse and hate. Finn latched onto Duncan, the first man to ever show him attention.

Duncan was hurting, his family had abandoned him, and had no will to live.

Oddly, you see that these two give each other something they both had needed in their lives, although toxic, you could see the true care at times.

It was good, I really enjoy this author's writing style. I also like the horror-ish Stockholm vibes.

I’d like to read more from them, over time, to see how they are getting on in the future.

So thankful for this arc

thanks to the publishers + team for giving me an e arc in exchange for an honest review!

This was definitely more dark + wild than this author's last book (which was one of my top romances of last year). Even though I read through the triggers and the authors note at the beginning I was still surprised. Even though one of the main characters Finn was definitely twisted I still really liked him as a character, but at some points wished we also got to see his point of view, not just in the epilogue. The other main character Duncan, while wasn't necessarily my favourite, I still liked following him and Finn's journey. There was one part of the book that definitely lowered my star rating (the misery-esque scene) and made it hard for me to fully be invested in the romance aspect of the story. It was also surprisingly more smutty, which I'm not big on, but didn't alter my feelings anyways. While I definitely enjoyed a good amount of this story, I think I just had too high of expectations, especially when compared to "heat haze" which is a totally different type of dark romance, so it might just be a me thing.

unconventional HEA

I loved heat haze, the debut novel from Alder Snow's hand and I can tell you this second book shows how much the author has grown. The pacing felt perfect and the characters had a thought through backstory.

Now don't get me wrong, DISTURBING is the only right word to describe this book. It's codependency on a whole other level.

I think I would have loved to see the codepency be portrayed in a couple more different ways to make it not as repetitive but to be honest, the unhinged behavior from psycho Finn (who's actually a broken man with an affinity with crying) made me forget about it often.

Expect the unexpecting at the end though. This is not your usual HEA.
And if Alder ever decides to write a sequel on their story (cause my god these boys need some good therapy and healthy love) I am first in line to read it.

Tropes:
Captor x captive
Stockholm syndrome
Psycho mmc
Carying him around the house as a love language
Forced proximity
Mental health rep

Spice: 🌶️🌶️.5

So I thought I enjoyed dark, but this book proved that I have my limits. The uncontrolled, unsexy violence between MCs was my line in the sand.

I kept reading, hoping for redeeming qualities, and there were a few. But the end was sooooooo unsatisfying.

I did appreciate the accurate portrayal of interpersonal trama, depression, and suicidal ideation. But it's not for the faint of heart.

The first third of the book was great and sweet (though still plenty of trauama). I knew the kidnapping was coming and have enjoyed other dark romances involving kidnapping. But the brutal unsexy violence between MCs ruined it for me.

I received an ARC from Gay Romance Reviews, and this my honest opinion.

Holy mother of mindfucks. This was absolutely fantastic. At the beginning I was a little confused because I was prepared for this to not be like The Haze but it did feel a little cute and soft. But boy oh boy was I in for a surprise when Finn personally really started to come out. This book had me thinking what the fuck but at the same time also thinking that they are just so cute together. There would be times I would forget what Finn had done to Duncan.

It goes without saying that both of these boys could benefit greatly from some good therapy, and as fucked up as their relationship is I am happy they get their own version of a HEA. I would definitely love to see more of these two.

Thank you to GRR for providing me an ARC of this book.

Wow this story was something so totally unexpected. Duncan was having a rough time coming out to his family was hard for him but he didn’t expect the reaction they would have. For that same reason he crosses path with Finn. At first you think oh this is a sweet guy that could be the perfect friend to Duncan but man…. This twist of the story I definitely did not expect the turn this story took it was shocking it truly took me by surprise. But I think in my opinion it would have been a more perfect read if we had Finn pov in my opinion it would have been more interesting to see what was going through that mind of his.

Meet Cute by @alder.snow

I know there’s probably something very wrong with me😅 But I absolutely DEVOURED this story 😍
If you think this is just a simple sweet meet cute you’re very very wrong 🫣

Finn is starved for positive attention, and if at the beginning, you might think that he’s just a needy teddy bear, you’ll find out quickly that that’s not the case😏

Then we have Duncan, who is so kind and generous but also starved for affection and validation. He is the perfect victim for Finn🥹

Anyways, I laughed, I cried, I was a little shocked and disturbed but overall I truly enjoyed their story 🙃

I am as obsessed with it as the nature of the book is! It is so dynamic-heavy and really enjoyable to delve into the two leads' lives as they navigate this newfound connection that essentially knots their souls together. It is dark, yes, but the difference from other dark romances I've read is that the themes in this book feel more personal and realistic. They happen due to circumstances that, for some, hit close to home. And how the events are just one vile thing after another. You truly can't expect how the characters are gonna come out of each one!

I received an ARC, and this is my own personal perspective on the book.

Meet Cute is anything but your typical romance—in the best way. Alder Snow delivers a dark, emotionally gripping story that kept me completely invested from beginning to end. Duncan and Finn are complex, flawed characters whose connection is both intense and unforgettable. The emotional depth, suspense, and unique take on love and healing made this a compelling read, and the ending was incredibly satisfying. If you enjoy darker romances with layered characters and plenty of emotion, this one is well worth picking up.

ARC review

I loved the book.
It was really messed up the HEA but well deserved too, if that makes sense.
Duncan has been casted out by his family and his only friend lives far away. He feels like nothing is worthy anymore and just wants everything to end. Then he meets Finn and everything changes.
Finn was sick in the head, no point in denying it or trying to justify it. He was OBSESSED with Duncan and would do literally anything to have him.
Their love is twisted but it theirs and I loved that for them

Dark, is definetly the correct description for this book. From a meet cute romance to a sinister obsession -this book is perfect for when you want to read something a bit different that leaves you feeling on edge at the end. While it does read a bit like a shorter book, the characters are still interesting and the story draws you in , enough that i couldn't put it down and read it all in one evening.

Really grateful for the ARC, but I don’t think I’m mentally okay enough to read this. I got to 45% and I just don’t know how it could be classed as a romance. I felt deeply unsettled and it made my chest feel funny. If you like dark stuff, you’ll probably like it. But for me: Heat Haze (author’s debut) is really where my dark romance levels like to sit - dark but fluffy too.

A disturbing dark stalker romance like you’ve never read! Finn is the perfect balance of adorkable and absolutely unhinged. Their romance is never straightforward and never completely consensual, there’s drugging involved and major damage to Duncan mental and physical but some parts of it are weirdly sweet.

Features;
- Evil nerd
- Vulnerable MMC
- major suicidal ideation (check the CWs!)
- Kidnapping
- Possessive “Love interest”
- HEA (but for who?🤨😅)

that left me unsettled. I have read darker things, but the non traditional hea, had me contemplating my feelings. I liked it, not kicking my feet and giggling liked it..more like dragging my broken leg behind me wondering what the heck was that kinda way. I wasnt sure what to expect, I dont think it was that. And im not mad about it. It was a bit repetitive in the middle, but nothing that made me want to stop reading. I have complex feelings for both mmcs Duncan ( the kidnapped) and Finn (the kidnapper). Nothing about their "relationship" was good or healthy, and everyone here needs a hell of a lot of therapy...like a lot...so much therapy. Overall, it was a good f**ked up time. Just dont expect holding hands skipping into the sunset.
