Moriah Melín W.’s How to Show Up for the Dying & Their Loved Ones is a compassionate end-of-life care guide for anyone who wants to support a dying person, a caregiver, or a grieving family with greater confidence. This practical nonfiction book follows three stages: diagnosis to death, death to the release of the body, and the long period of grief and integration that follows. It combines personal stories, concrete guidance, and reflective exercises, giving readers both an emotional framework and useful actions they can take.

The book is impressively thorough. Melín discusses difficult conversations, hospice, advance directives, medical aid in dying, care for children, meal trains, household help, living wakes, email updates, home funerals, vigils, burial, cremation, memorial planning, and the administrative work that follows a death. The structure makes the book easy to read straight through or consult during a particular stage of a family’s experience. Its twenty-one chapters move from the foundations of support into practical help before, during, and long after a death.

What gives this caregiving and grief support book its distinct character is Melín’s candid, nurturing voice. She writes openly about the times she showed up well, the times she pulled away, and the moments when caring for others pushed her beyond her own capacity. Her five guiding principles, self-care, sacrifice, staying close, bravery, and “sitting in the fire,” keep the advice grounded in relationships rather than performance. She doesn’t treat support as a matter of finding flawless words. She presents it as an ongoing practice of listening, making specific offers, respecting boundaries, receiving help, and returning after an awkward or imperfect moment.

This is also a spiritually minded bereavement guide, shaped by ideas of interconnectedness, ceremony, energy, nature, and the continuing presence of those who’ve died. Those elements sit alongside highly practical instruction, creating a book that feels part handbook, part memoir, and part invitation to rebuild community around death. Readers facing a terminal diagnosis in their circle will find immediate direction here, while caregivers, death doulas, hospice workers, clergy, and community organizers will find a thoughtful model for creating sustainable layers of support. It’s a warm, substantial book about caring for people through one of life’s most demanding passages, and about letting that care extend to everyone standing nearby.

How to Show Up for the Dying and Their Loved Ones is a compassionate, thoughtful, and deeply meaningful guide that addresses one of life's most profound experiences with empathy, wisdom, and practical insight. Moriah Melín W. offers readers a supportive resource for navigating the emotional, relational, and practical challenges that accompany serious illness, end-of-life care, and grief.

One of the book's greatest strengths is its emphasis on presence over perfection. Rather than suggesting that there is a single "right" way to support someone facing the end of life, the book encourages readers to approach these moments with compassion, active listening, honesty, and genuine human connection. Its guidance helps reduce the fear and uncertainty that often surround conversations about death while empowering family members, friends, caregivers, and communities to provide meaningful support during difficult times.

The book thoughtfully explores themes of end-of-life care, compassion, caregiving, grief, emotional resilience, communication, family relationships, hospice support, empathy, healing, and human dignity. Blending practical advice with emotional understanding, it reminds readers that simply being present can often be one of the greatest gifts offered to someone nearing the end of life and to those who love them.

Written with warmth, sensitivity, and clarity, How to Show Up for the Dying and Their Loved Ones is a valuable resource for caregivers, healthcare professionals, hospice volunteers, counselors, clergy, social workers, families, and anyone seeking guidance on supporting others through life's most vulnerable moments. It is an important contribution to conversations about compassionate care, emotional well-being, and the enduring power of human connection.

When I was accepted for this ARC, I was looking for a lifeline really. My lovely dad is currently navigating secondary metastatic liver cancer, and as someone who lives with existential and death OCD, facing the road ahead felt overwhelming. I wanted a book that would help me prepare, process, and—above all—show up in the best way possible for my dad, my brother, my husband and our children.

Moriah Melin’s book gave me that. Moriah is so clearly experienced, but what stands out most is how kind, compassionate, and deeply human this book feels. Not seeking perfection, or performance but accepting mistakes and showing up anyway. It isn't just about what to do; it's full of gentle, practical advice on how to show up, how the process works, and practical ways to check in with yourself along the way.
It is such a scary and overwhelming time, but reading this made it feel just a little less scary. This isn't a book I will just read once—it’s something I know I will be referring back to time and again as needed throughout our journey.
Thank you so much to the author and publisher for providing an ARC

This book was beautifully written and made me quite emotional at time.
I chose this book due to current personal circumstances that could benefit from the thoughtfulness and understanding this book contains.
I really enjoyed the exercises at the end of the chapters to help work on the aspects discussed.

Some of this book did not apply outside of the US but was helpful to read and understand the process in other countries.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
