This started out really strongly and then waned a bit more as time went on. Obviously, the zombies were the best part. I appreciated getting to see how each zombie played their part to spread the infection. It was gory in the best way, and the way it spread was plausible and interesting to watch.

The characters were a little hard to keep track of. I particularly had a hard time with Desmond and Dustin--the names were too close that I kept forgetting which was which. The dogs, though, were the ones who stole the show. Whenever they got their screen time it was infinitely more fun.

And I think that was kind of the problem. After the initial outbreak, it was a lot of discussion of different ideas how to survive; lots of conversations and lots of stuff about what the government was doing. That was when my attention waned a bit. In general, I tend to glaze over whenever tactical maneuvers are discussed, and this was no different.

The only big problem I saw was that my copy needed some serious editing work. There were errors galore: "the" instead of "they," "he" instead of "her," really long run on sentences. It needs a good clean up because errors like that are glaring.

A lab assistant accidentally pricks herself with a syringe that contains an experimental drug. This seemingly harmless incident leads to a deadly infection that turns people into zombies bent on consuming human flesh. The infection starts with one or two people and quickly spreads exponentially, leading to hordes of infected zombies staggering down the streets of Ogden. Law enforcement is at a loss for how to deal with such widespread devastation. One law man, Detective Desmond King, gets embroiled in the Ogden mess and tries to save as many of Ogden’s 1,200 citizens as he can.

Ogden was a fun read, if somewhat clichéd. I found the simple prose easy to get through, and the style improved as the book really got going. The cast of characters was believable, although the part of William Decker, the maniacal National Guard leader stretched reality perhaps a bit too far. Still, every book has to have a villain, and Decker made for a decent, if overdone, bad guy. People have commented on the King’s two dogs, as they are almost the only domestic animals seen in the book. The dogs provide a bit of relief from the heaviness of the story and it is fulfilling to see them play a large role by the end of the story. I do have one question, though. What happened to the cow? Other than that very minor (and largely tongue-in-cheek) concern, the book has a satisfying ending. A reasonable read for a summer afternoon.

I love me some zombies. Yet I haven’t read too many zombie books and I really wanted to read this one after the synopsis! The story is setup over only one night, with each section spaced apart and from very many different points of view. Definitely cool. The action in the beginning is pretty on par with what you’d want to see in any zombie film. There were also a few characters that were continued throughout, especially the detective who was realistic and likable. However, after a point it feels like the zombies were no longer an issue though the plot was still full of danger. The other characters weren’t as deep as Detective King, though a few of the main ones came close. I wanted to know more about them, and how their personalities might change how they saw things or solutions. The dogs were a good addition as others have said, but I wish they’d had a few more scenes or even parts told from their POVs. The end was all right, but not that satisfying. It was a fairly quick read though, and still fulfilled my zombie quota regardless. [I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.]

To be Honest after reading the first two chapters, I didnt know if there were going to be enough people to finish the book. BUT as the story progressed, it was very good. I enjoyed the book. I won this from a goodreads giveaway.

This was a fun read. I really liked how the dogs were used in this book, an excellent grounding point for a detective who's world is spinning out of control. If you like zombie stories, you're sure to enjoy this one.
