A very cute, almost summer-like book, Jake will spend some time at his aunt's house to help renovate the house before the sale. On the 1st day he meets Robbie and the hatred is evident. When Jake find Robbie on a dating app, he tries his luck but is turned down by Robbie.
One night at a bar gone wrong, Jake is sentenced to community time cleaning up the beach under Robbie's supervision. The afternoons begin to lift the veil on each of the MCs and the attraction arises. But things are not always easy, Robbie's rich family and Jake's love traumas prevent romance. But Meir and Aunt Isabel have something to say.

When we meet Jake and then Robbie we wonder who the title is referring to. From the outset it seems to make sense that it's Jake - stuck in a small town where he is helping his aunt, recently widowed, to sell her house, he's not at home, not entirely comfortable - the perfect candidate for being a fish out of water.
Robbie on the other hand seems to have it all - confidence, money, good looks. His family are well known in the town and one of the wealthiest around. Jake immediately decides he and Robbie are not compatible, they are too opposite and after all, Jake has a rule, no more than one night with a man, no attachments, no losing his heart. He therefore must be the fish who is out of water. But then the story moves on, the two begin breaking their own rules about just about everything, they can't seem to help themselves and the small town they are both in is just small enough that it keeps happening.
There is most certainly something in the air around these two and Olivia Day writes about it and about them with such charm that it's easy to get completely lost in the story, the setting and the characters, all of which exude a certain special magic. Here is a world, a town which could be like any we know, there are people who could be the people we know and lives we might all lead or know of. But there is also a touch of something else, a something else that hooks us in, that takes us away from our own everyday's and has us rooting for these two to see what we can, what is right in front of them. Can they grasp the magic and make their own HEA? An absolute charm.

Relatable and well written MM romance story! I loved that the story was different and not formulaic! Looking forward to more stories from Olivia Day.

Fish Out of Water is a small town, forced proximity, opposites attract, adversaries to lovers read about Jake and Robert. I really enjoyed this storyline and the characters, it's a fun story and easy to read.

Fun and easy to read book. MM and small town. With a little rivalries to lovers. I liked that each guy had their own hang up and needed to grow a little in order to choose what might be best for them.
