The Outer Circle is the last book in The Counterpoint trilogy. It brings together the characters of The Metronome and The Great Game to conclude their stories.
It’s 2024 and the world is divided, pitting the United States against the combined forces of China and Russia. In China, domestic unrest pushes the leadership to act against Taiwan. In Russia, under the surface a power struggle is brewing. Such is the backdrop of the U.S. presidential elections where the established parties face a challenge from unexpected political newcomers. The two heroes of The Great Game, now fugitives, discover that not everything is what it seems and someone invisible is pulling the strings behind the scenes. But can they stop the events set into motion before the world slides into a war?
Like the other two books in the trilogy, The Outer Circle has been intended as more than pure entertainment read. Will the world look like this in nine years? Will the U.S.? Nobody can tell. But many of the trends described here are already in motion: ever-bigger “too big to fail” institutions vs. individual-empowering sharing services, global interconnection vs. fragmentation, unprecedented convenience vs. continuing loss of privacy, the American supremacy vs. the rise of China and the Chinese-Russian alliance. New technologies are disrupting the existing order. Eventually, these trends will collide. When, how and with what outcome, that is the question.
I didn't plan to become a writer. In late 2012 a friend's death prompted me to ask what would be the one thing I regret not doing. I've always been an avid reader but have not had the courage to write. And I made a New Year resolution to write a book. That's how it started. Since I don't depend on writing for my livelihood, I feel no pressure to "commercialize" my work or to follow "formulas for success." I do hope to say something meaningful and original about human existence. My books are not light reading and not to everyone's liking. I write about serious topics, such as the price of freedom and the corruption of power, a relationship between an individual and a state, tribal (in)tolerances, etc., but wrap them into action-filled stories. Having been born under a totalitarian regime, I'm very sensitive to the kind of power that a modern state wields over an individual. There is one common trait that my books share: the heroes are ordinary people, not superheroes or master detectives. While all my books are entirely fictional, the fiction is always rooted in facts and realities of the current or past events.
A very good series comes to an end. I enjoyed and recommend this book series.
I read the three books of this series in order. I enjoyed and recommend all three books. As The author notes, books one and two stand pretty much alone. Book 3 can be read first; but, it is recommended to read books Books 1 and 2 first. Thank you to the offer for making these books available on Kindle unlimited.
I enjoyed reading all three books in the counterpoint trilogy. Each book made me think if the plot had a possibility of coming true. Some of the things discussed in this book have already come true with Bitcoin. I would definitely recommend all three books in the series.
I read and reviewed the first two books in this three book series-The Metronome and The Great Game. Both of these books do contain historical facts even though The Metronome is written in the past tense-both of the other books are in the future. Politics all over our world is rife with Greed and Dangerous character's. All you need to do is read a newspaper to realize this. So--what would happen if this continues on-that is what these books attempt to discern. Looking forward and hoping it doesn't really happen! The third and last book in this trilogy kind of pulls it all together--the ending will make you think! I still say that all these books can be read as stand alones but there is some overlap and I do suggest you read all 3 and then act accordingly! The Outer Circle
