Sorry, I got to about 60% and then just couldn't finish it. It is a collection of stories but they're very superficially told and the focus is more on the author and what he sees and feels and that part, which was a huge part of the book, just wasn't interesting to me. But I could have been ok with that if the writing had been better with focus on salient facts and discarding useless information and dialogue that just bogged down the narrative.
Example: She led me to the office, a small room at the back of the building that smelled of old paper and coffee. A file cabinet stood against the far wall, ad she opened the second drawer to reveal a thick folder labeled Pacientes Fallecidos, 1784-1800. "The documents are inside. Take as long as you need. I will be in the main ward." She left me alone with the records and I sat down at the desk, opened the folder and began to read.
And then it continues with a few mentions of patients within the file. THAT part as interesting. What came before (above) and after just wasn't for me. And this is in every chapter. I gave it more than a month and just kept finding other things to read. But maybe others will find it interesting.
