Standing ovation for this debut Romantacy. I swear Alison wrote this book just for me because it ticked so many of my boxes. There is a suspense element that reads like a thriller and I ate it up!
This story follows Ly who is the youngest daughter to the fire Emperor. She has visions of a masked man hunting and killing her but she knows no one will believe she is in danger. In this book we follow her journey to stay a step ahead of her would be murderer while trying to figure out the who and when of it all. This sets up and unfolds so beautifully and when I tell you I was a nervous wreck in the last 10% I'm not exaggerating. My anxiety was through the roof.
This is well written with beautifully placed twists and turns that will have you questioning how you didn't see it coming. This book is exactly why you support indie authors and give their books a chance. If you love darker romantic fantasy you have to give this book a try. I'm so excited to see where the final book takes us!

This book is fast paced and keeps you guessing the whole time. There are well executed twist and turns throughout the book, so I never knew what was coming. I devoured this book in 2 days.
This will be on kindle unlimited, releasing September 15th, so definitely recommend adding it to your TBR.

Lysandra is a powerless princess of the flame, and upon her 21st birthday she is declared marriageable. However that night she dreams of a masked killer coming into her room. Her only thought is survival and if she wants to live, she can’t stay in the palace.
Under disguise as a servant she finds herself working for Lord Alaris. Alaris had a reputation that Lysandra knows she should stay away from, but she can’t. She finds herself drawn to him, trying to unravel the mystery of the masked man and trying to understand Alaris.
Lysandra starts off seeming naive about the world outside of the Palace, it’s all she’s really ever known. But throughout her escape and refuge she grows into a stubborn, reckless, strong person. Shes passionate, dedicated and guarded.
Alaris is mysterious, he comes off as a smug playboy, but he’s guarded and secretive. When it comes to Lysandra he will do anything to keep her safe and feel comfortable.
The chemistry between them, the tension that builds. It’s a slow-burn, you get a splash of teasing here and there until the final moment. Together they are balanced, they are electric and I love them so much!

I became a woman OBSESSED 😭
I was lucky enough to receive an advanced ARC copy from the author and from the first few chapters I was HOOKED!
Lysandra’s journey had me invested straight away and I loved seeing her grow, find her strength and discover who she was along the way. I especially loved the found-family element and the relationships she built throughout. Watching those bonds grow and seeing Lysandra find people she could trust and rely on added so much to her story 🥰
And Lysandra and Alaris? The TENSION!! 😍😍
The slow burn was absolutely EVERYTHING. Their chemistry, the stolen moments, the lingering glances and things left unsaid... I was eating up every second 😅 Every interaction felt charged, and the tension built so perfectly that I was constantly wanting more.
I just loved the story as a whole, it completely consumed me. The world, the characters, the twists… I was constantly telling myself “just one more chapter” 🤣
And then THAT ENDING! THE CLIFFHANGER OF ALL CLIFFHANGERS 😭😭 I genuinely did not see that coming! Not even a little bit. I am DESPERATE for answers and need book 2 IMMEDIATELY 🥲

I actually gave this book two chances. I picked it up once and then put it down again, and then I picked it up again. The second time I got hooked. I just had to give it a chance. The characters had some great development and I really liked Lysandra. But I did also feel like I was getting a bit bored and confused sometimes. But when it got interesting it got VERY interesting! I was also pretty confused as to whether the two characters were actually into each other or not. They had some cute moments of course but Alaris’s history was confusing and I couldn’t tell what Lysandra’s feelings towards him were.
I really enjoyed Lysandra’s dynamic with the hawks. The way she grew to love them. That was the true love story of this book. The way she loved them and had more of a connection with them than she did Alaris was funny but cute.

I was initially hooked from the start but the pace was all off. It kept jumping to new scenarios too quickly and the world building just wasn’t there for me.
The magic system wasn’t explained very well and it had so much potential.
There was a lot of filler content where it wasn’t needed and the word count could have been filled with more information on magic systems and world building.
I loved the MMC but his character development lacked depth.
The FMC I wanted to love but the miscommunication and lying trope was not for me and it got irritating.
There was so much opportunity to elaborate on vital parts of the story but it would just skip to something random without much explanation.
I really wanted to love this and it initially hooked me in but I ended up finding it to be a bit of a chore to finish.
The cliffhanger at the end I saw coming and unfortunately, it didn’t give me a grá to want a second book immediately.
This could of worked so well as a stand alone and not a duology.

I received this as an advanced reader copy.
Genuinely loved this and couldn’t put it down 100% in my top reads of 2026 so far. Great pacing, great plot whilst still within the realms of the genre but not so much that it felt repetitive or overdone at any point. Characters were well developed for a book of this length. I did predict the plan they would go with (it’s a Romantasy after all I think most avid readers of the genre would so not a really a big deal) but the twist at the end! I will be returning for book two and I will be inpatient about it!

Y’ALL! This book is going to make it into the big leagues I just know it. The storyline is UNIQUE! It is COZY! It is FAST PACED! It is GRIPPING! I actually need about a thousand more pages of this book. In front of my eyeballs. Processing in my brain. RIGHT NOW!
I don’t want to give away too much of this book because I want people to go into it the same way I did where it was slightly vague, but then the storyline weaves and it becomes so magical. The FMC is a princess fleeing the unsettling feeling of death, but along the way we see her grow into herself and I LOVED that she took on such unique jobs to find some freedom.
I only have two qualms (one is a minor, tiny spoiler). 1. I wish she had named the dang birds! They needed cutesy little names (I ask for so little). And 2. That absolute cliffhanger of an ending was DIRTY! I flipped the page looking for the next chapter and THERE WAS NOTHING LEFT IN THE BOOK! I need the next installment of these series in the next 5 minutes or I may die.
I can’t thank the author enough for writing this masterpiece and I cannot freaking WAIT for how the rest of this series will pan out. This is easily one of my favorite books of the year!

I LOVED, loved, LOVED this book! It was nearly impossible to put down and was definitely a page-turner.

I was already completely invested in Lysandra and incredibly curious about Alaris. His mysterious nature had me questioning everything, and I was desperate to figure out what he was hiding.

It was 11 PM, I had to be up at 5 AM, and yet I could not put this book down. The characters and worldbuilding pulled me in so completely that I completely lost track of time. I kept telling myself, just one more chapter, only to realize I had read several more.
80% in…
I was sitting on a flight trying to finish the book, and by this point, there was absolutely no putting it down.
And then came the ending.
The plot twists and revelations completely caught me off guard. I genuinely did not see some of them coming, and that final page left me staring at the book thinking, wait… THAT’S where we’re stopping?! I need the second book immediately.
Shadoward completely captivated me from the very beginning. The characters, immersive world, intriguing plot, and twists and turns kept me engaged throughout, and I loved how the story continued to build as I read.
This was one of those books where I kept thinking about it when I wasn’t reading, and once I started, I didn’t want to stop. I’m already eagerly awaiting the next installment.

The plot twists and revelations completely caught me off guard. I genuinely did not see some of them coming, and that final page left me staring at the book thinking, wait… THAT’S where we’re stopping?! I need the second book immediately.
Shadoward completely captivated me from the very beginning. The characters, immersive world, intriguing plot, and twists and turns kept me engaged throughout, and I loved how the story continued to build as I read.
This was one of those books where I kept thinking about it when I wasn’t reading, and once I started, I didn’t want to stop. I’m already eagerly awaiting the next installment.

For a debut novel of an indie author, I really really enjoyed this book! The world building at the very beginning is intense and a little confusing so it’s definitely helpful to utilize the index for help. Once the story gets going, it had me pretty hooked throughout.
I enjoyed Lysandra’s character and her relationship with the hawks. Alaris is a great morally grey MMC with lots of secrets that keep you on your toes. The murder mystery unfolding and interconnecting with the fight against the Emperor was interesting and had me very hooked, especially towards the end.
Oh and the cliffhanger! How dare you! I can’t wait for book 2!!

When I decided to start a bookish account it was in the hopes that maybe I’d get to read some cool ARCs here and there and maybe enjoy one or two. I never thought I’d be part of something that feels like the next big thing. This book got me out of a slump where I was started to worry that I was no longer enjoying reading.
The best tagline I’ve seen so far for this book is “imagine waking up from a premonition that you were gonna be unalived but no one believes you! What would you do?”
This book had me gripped from the get go. From the moment you begin you are immersed into a the life of a young powerless princess who is coming out to society and ready to play her role as a prize for the next eligible Lord. She wakes up in the middle of the night with a premonition that a masked man is going to end her life. What ensues is the journey she takes to find out who this masked assassin is. You follow her in her fears, her challenges and her development and she’s one of the very few FMCs that didn’t annoy me 😂!
She’s so self aware that you are rooting for her as you go along. It flips your typical rags to riches story and you follow how she navigates being a servant undercover.
Our MMC, what can I say, banter, witty humour, flirtations some teasing (this is a slow burn) and then some more teasing but the back and forth had me giggling on the train home and anywhere I was sat cause I have not put this book down!
There are some really clever bits here that I don’t wanna spoil but the mystery and intrigue has you second guessing every character like a good who-done it. That ending had me staring into the wall and then talking my husband’s ear off about how I didn’t see it coming! I was so lucky to receive this as my first ever ARC, and wow what an amazing debut!!!
This book had so many twists and turns that I didn’t see coming and I was so stressed out for Ly but I really enjoyed seeing her character grow in bravery and boldness, finding new relationships outside of her horrible family. And now I want rose gold hair!!
I absolutely loved the MMC, he was honestly perfect, I could just read a full book of him talking to Ly.
I can’t wait to see what happens in the second instalment because of that ending! I was so not expecting it to go down like that!!

This book. This book had me yelling at my kindle, throwing it down….immediately picking it back up for more. I loved every minute of it. This is like the butterfly effect and inception made a baby with a fantasy realm and magic. 🪄 This will never go how you think it’s going to go and I was living for the next plot twist. Edge of your seat drama! And lorddd when that delicious will they won’t they finally snaps…..folded me like a lawn chair. Delicious. 🤤 The plot is fast, frightening and totally different than what other fantasy books have…perfect. I’ve already demanded book two because I’m going to need it to recover from this one.

There is the right amount of suspense and my heart was in my mouth throughout the last couple of chapters.

I really, truly loved every second of this book. One of the things that initially drew me to apply for an ARC of Shadoward was how much Alaris reminded me of Howl from Howl’s Moving Castle, and I can happily say that I was not disappointed. There is something so incredibly charming about a character who is simultaneously clever, powerful, dramatic, and just a little bit insufferable, and Alaris absolutely delivered on that front. He very quickly became one of my favorite parts of the story. I also really appreciated Lysandra as a protagonist, particularly because she never completely loses the fact that she is, well… a princess who was never trained for any of this. She does become stronger throughout the story. She works harder, learns to value the people and things around her, and grows in ways that feel meaningful, but she doesn’t suddenly become an effortlessly capable heroine because the plot requires her to. She is still scared. She still struggles. Sometimes she simply isn’t enough. And honestly, I loved that for her. It made her growth feel much more believable because becoming stronger didn’t mean completely changing who she was. The plot twists were another highlight for me. I had some semblance that at least part of what was happening was coming, but that definitely didn’t stop the reveals from hitting. There were actually two twists that caught me off guard, and discovering that Alaris is ultimately responsible for the situation we’re in was particularly shocking. What I loved even more, though, was how that revelation ties into what I think is one of the most interesting antagonistic forces in the entire book: time.
There is never enough time. There is never enough time to plan, never enough time to save everyone, never enough time to make the perfect choice, and eventually you have to decide what you’re willing to sacrifice. Do you choose what is best for the kingdom, even when it means hurting the people you love? Or do you choose your own selfish desires and accept the consequences? I especially loved the dichotomy between Alaris and Lysandra in that regard. Alaris would do almost anything for his people and his world because of the very nature of who he is, but from someone else’s perspective, those choices can still look like betrayal. Doing what you believe is right doesn’t necessarily mean that you aren’t hurting someone else in the process, and Shadoward does a really interesting job of exploring that gray area. Which leads into another theme that really stuck with me: are you still worthy of being loved if you are no longer useful?
That question feels woven through so much of the story, particularly in the way the characters view themselves and one another. What happens when your value isn’t tied to what you can do for someone else? What happens when you can’t save everyone? And what happens when the people you love aren’t sure whether they can afford to choose you? I think those questions are what will stick with me the most after finishing the book. I finished this ARC and immediately texted my friend that this book gave me the feeling I had when I originally read Spark of the Everflame when it very first came out - I was just in awe that this is an indie author and her writing is blowing everything out of the water!
It was truly such a well written book: the characters are fully developed, the world-building was thorough but not overdone and shoved in your face, and everything just clicked when I was reading this. It felt right. I lost myself in it and binged it in a day because I couldn't get enough. I had such a good time reading this that I was HEARTBROKEN when it ended. Screaming, crying, throwing up - that type of heartbroken. Because I need to know more and I fear I won't survive without it (yes, I'm being a drama queen and no, I don't care).
This author took everything I love reading about in a romantasy, put it together, and then did it so well that I have a legitimate book hangover. It has a murder mystery, gods and magic, a stubborn FMC, a man willing to do bad things for the right reasons, banter and tension, and just the right amount of spice. Lysandra is such a real, relatable FMC, and as things were happening in the book, I found myself thinking "yeah, I'd do that too" and "obviously you're going to do this," etc. It was so nice having a main character that I really connected with and truly felt as if I was in her shoes.
Alaris is the new number one book boyfriend in my household, just FYI. He's broody but nice when it matters, powerful but still thoughtful, and at his heart, he's so caring that it brought tears to my eyes (and made me kick my feet giddily). I require more, please.
I am begging you to give this book a shot, and it's available on Kindle Unlimited as of Sept 15.

Archer’s debut novel, Shadoward, follows Princess Lysandra who is running for her life after a premonition one night that if she stays in the castle, she will not live much longer. Her newfound identities bring her to places she never thought she would go and ultimately lead her to Lord Alaris; the man whose reputation certainly precedes him. While Alaris allows Lysandra refuge in his castle, something much more daunting is brewing beneath the surface. While Lysandra is running from danger, Alaris is planning to run into it. Despite the distractions they pose for one another, the two work together in efforts to save each other, and the world as it stands.
I can say with nothing but truth that Archer had me HOOKED right off the bat. The journey and growth of these characters, the romantasy meets murder mystery but from the future, all of it was addicting and so well written. The plot was beyond thought out, the character growth was intense, and the tension between Alaris and Lysandra... just wow. It has been rare, in my experience, that a debut author and novel come out swinging with a 5 star read, but Archer cracked that code without a doubt and left me yurning for SO much more! Even the secondary characters had depth and deep thought put into them, and this continued to shine throughout the book!
I am beyond thankful to Archer and her team for gifting me an Advanced Reader Copy of Shadoward, and I am anxiously on the edge of my seat for book 2 (which I hope doesn’t take long because that FUCKING ENDING?!)! My jaw is still on the floor. That felt like looking both ways before crossing the road and then getting hit by a fucking Boeing 787. Wow.

I signed up for this ARC thinking, "Sure, I'll give it a try," and was not prepared to enjoy it as much as I did. This book grabbed me from the first page and kept me hooked through the whole journey. I found the magic system interesting, the stakes and danger real enough to keep me invested, the relationship's progression well written, the reveals surprising, and I am still reeling from that ending. I literally shouted at the book on the last page, and now I'm going to go crazy until I can get my hands on book 2.
I loved this world and the various parts of it we get to experience during the story, each with its distinct feel and flavor. I also enjoyed the concept of the divinials and incarnials, especially as more information is revealed about their powers and history.
We start with our main character running for her life, certain someone is coming to kill her, only to ultimately learn that the whole realm is in danger, raising the stakes while keeping the threat against her at the forefront. We meet characters that instantly warm our hearts, while also enjoying the way Lysandra grows over the course of the book. She goes from hiding/not-hiding on the periphery of the story, alone in a crowded room in the first pages, to surrounding herself with allies and taking risks, ultimately stepping into her power by the last pages.
While hiding her identity, we see her work hard, care for others, and refuse to sit by while important work needs to be done. Her growth and our investment in her feel earned, and I found myself wanting things to work out for her and believing her worthy of the level of care the love interest gives her.

For the first 10% of the book, I wasn’t quite sure where the storyline was going, but once I got into it, I was completely hooked.
The writing is phenomenal and does an incredible job of pulling you straight into the story. The descriptions are so immersive that you genuinely feel like you’re right there alongside the characters.
At first, Lysandra’s personality felt somewhat flat, as her focus seemed to revolve almost completely around getting a prophecy and getting to safety. However, once the MMC becomes involved, she really starts to come alive, and we get to see much more of her true personality. I particularly admired how well she adapts to every new surrounding and circumstances, showing willingness in changing how she is perceived - Physically, as well as through characteristics.
She also develops some amazing bonds with the side characters, especially Siro, the gardener, and Dashol, the commander. And I absolutely cannot forget her incredible bond with Alaris's hawks. Honestly, this was one of my favourite parts of the book! Just seeing her getting to know and love these amazing creatures, although initially being terrified of them.
Alaris is such an intriguing character. He’s funny, charming and effortlessly interesting, but underneath that, he’s also incredibly caring, which made him all the more enjoyable to read. His multifaceted character leaves you, as well as Ly, guessing what he will be doing next.
Besides the main characters and their relationship, there's also another pairing that I simply can't wait to read about more. Dashol and Siro. I can't wait for the author to dive deeper into their relationship and possibilities!
The world building is absolutely amazing. The world feels detailed, immersive and thoughtfully created, making it incredibly easy to get lost in the story.
The plot twists and revelations throughout the book constantly kept me on the edge of my seat. The tension stays high and there were so many moments where I just had to keep reading to find out what would happen next. And I was definitely not prepared for the massive plot twist at the end!
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and absolutely cannot wait for the sequel and to dive back into this amazing world. I need to know what happens next!
For the first 10% of the book, I wasn’t quite sure where the storyline was going, but once I got into it, I was completely hooked.
The writing is phenomenal and does an incredible job of pulling you straight into the story. The descriptions are so immersive that you genuinely feel like you’re right there alongside the characters.
At first, Lysandra’s personality felt somewhat flat, as her focus seemed to revolve almost completely around getting a prophecy and getting to safety. However, once the MMC becomes involved, she really starts to come alive, and we get to see much more of her true personality. I particularly admired how well she adapts to every new surrounding and circumstances, showing willingness in changing how she is perceived - Physically, as well as through characteristics.
She also develops some amazing bonds with the side characters, especially Siro, the gardener, and Dashol, the commander. And I absolutely cannot forget her incredible bond with Alaris's hawks. Honestly, this was one of my favourite parts of the book! Just seeing her getting to know and love these amazing creatures, although initially being terrified of them.

We have politics, a deviant King, a runaway Princess, hidden identities, masked killers,, tension, sloooooow burn and betrayals.
The book was so well paced, never fast, never slow, the perfect balance and the events of the book had me on my toes!
Enjoyment - 5/5
I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it!
The first chapter has me hooked immediately. Give me family drama mixed with any type of corrupt politics and a sadistic ruler and I’m in!
Lysandra’s journey was that of finding herself and her becoming an independent young woman while trying to navigate life on the run.
Artistry - 5/5
Shadoward is pretty much flawless.
Archer has written it so well, with the perfect level of detail to engage the reader and introduce them to a new world without overwhelming them with over descriptive prose.
This coupled with the pace made it an exceptional read with a ero writing devices that would pull a reader out of the story.
Characters - 5/5
Lysandra is a formidable FMC, Incredibly stubborn and headstrong. Her journey from the spoilt princess to the runaway thief was very enjoyable.
Alaris. Well…. Just check out the character art on Archers instagram and I’ll let you be the judge. He’s dark, alluring, mysterious, complex and so much more.
I really joyed the side characters also! There were quite a few, but archer gave them enough page time that they became integral to the story.

I need everyone to give this book a go, but I have one caveat.
It end on a MASSIVE WTF cliffhanger and we need to wait for the second book
Actually, this gave me the same feeling as King of Ravens by Clare Sager.
You’re going to end it like that and make me wait?! RUDE.
Genuinely though, I cannot wait until the story unfolds.

We follow Lysandra on the night of her birthday, when she’s awoken from a horrifying dream of her own ☠️. Desperate to save herself, she flees the palace & tries to find work so she can stay under the radar. She ends up working as a raven keeper for Lord Alaris. Little does she know that Alaris knows far more about her than she thinks! 👀
Lysandra is a princess whose only value, in the eyes of her family, seems to be producing heirs. On her birthday, she dreams of her own death and decides she wants more than to simply be a pawn in her father’s court. She’s also shunned by her siblings & parents because of her lack of magic. If I’m being honest, I felt really sorry for her. She’s been dealt a pretty crappy hand.
Once she’s on the run, though, Lysandra proves that she’s so much more than just a princess of the realm. Determined to prove her worth, she throws herself into her new life without anyone knowing her true identity. I really admired that about her.
I also loved seeing Lysandra develop a sense of belonging with the ravens. They really seemed to accept her & their relationship was such a lovely part of the story. There are also a few little friendships that develop at the Lord’s residence, which was nice to see, especially as Lysandra has been so isolated for most of her life.
Then we have Alaris, our MMC, a wealthy and powerful lord who saves Lysandra from a very handsy lord. He’s quite literally her knight in midnight armour. 😉 They develop a really nice rapport, and you see them both gradually begin to open up to each other. Of course, there’s plenty of tension between them too! I loved seeing them work together to starve off the curse that’s plaguing the lands!
Alaris is definitely a shadow daddy. He can travel through the Void and sort of morph into something else (angel vibes?), which was pretty damn cool.
But that ending?! 😱
Overall, this was a solid start to a new fantasy series! There were a few moments that felt a little too convenient for me, but I think that was partly to be expected with the setup and the direction of the story.

Shadoward is Alison’s debut book, however, you’d never know it when reading it! This is such a beautifully written book, I don’t even know where to start! This book consumed me and my time, I stayed up way too late every night wanting to finish this book and never wanting to put it down. As far as romantasy books go, this one had me absolutely hooked and is just what I needed right about now!
The world building was amazing, I could feel each of the provences as we travelled through them. All of the twists and turns kept me on my toes, as soon as you figure one out, there is another one around the corner, including the cliff hanger that we are left on at the end!
This book left me with so many unanswered questions in the best way possible!
I adore the characters, Lysandra Ignaros is the FMC and she has so much depth to her character. I adored her growth and character development, at the beginning she was a sheltered princess and throughout the book she develops into an absolute survivor at the end. She is one of my new favourite FMC’s and I won’t stop talking about her for a long time!
Alaris is the MMC and he is my new book boyfriend. There are so many of his own secrets that I never saw coming, most of them I love and some of them I hate (in the best way possible)! I can’t wait to see what happens with him in the next book and I hope it goes in the direction I envision!
Not to mention the tension between Ly and Alaris the whole book! The tension was so perfectly built up by all the small stolen moments, their chemistry, everything they didn’t say that we know they wanted to! It all felt so perfectly orchestrated to keep you invested in them and wanting more of them!
I am so grateful to the author, Alison Archer, for the advanced reader copy of this book. I feel so honoured to have read this before release date and this has definitely been my favourite book of 2026. I am SO SO excited for book 2 to see how the story develops and to see what happens after the cliff hanger she has left me on!!
I absolutely recommend reading this book, the release date is super close now, on September 15th. Shadoward will be on KU, or I totally recommend picking up a physical copy to support Alison. She is definitely an author to watch!
