Flick by Dr Kate Lister
Is illustrious
This is Dr Lister’s 3rd book about sexual history, and naturally the 3rd one I have read. Unlike her first two which focused on general sex history (think famous or infamous stories), this book focused exclusively on women’s sexual pleasure.
As the title Flick might have implied we are following the history of women’s sexual pleasure. The history is long, and varied depending on which culture or context one investigates. However it does seem that, as most modern women can confirm, women are fucked no matter what by society - well society that is men-centric.
We see a through line of sex or pleasure being discounted if there isn’t the almighty erect penis in attendance be it attached to a human (via flesh or string) or handheld. This stirs on the discounting of clitoral pleasure and the institutionalization of “immature” women who could not reach orgasm vaginally.
Speaking of women being pathology misunderstood, did you know the full clitoris was only fully mapped in … wait… this year! 2026 in late March! Did you know?! The G spot is really just the clitoris in the anterior wall of the vaginal canal. Did you know Freud was a piece of shit dumbass who’s musings about female orgasms led to a PRINCESS undergoing multiple vaginal reconstructions because she orgasmed the wrong way and was thus childish!
Besides the bullshit theories of men, and history or the medical profession not just asking women or you know doing any kind of actual science, we have the never ending debate of does she want it, is she faking it, why is she a slut, a prude, a whore, a frigged bitch, a wanton succubus. We have cultures and attitudes that women are more sex crazed and then just next door (geographically or historically) women only have sex via force or to fulfill their desire for children.
Recently I heard a man state that he thinks women are more into sex than men. And although that seems possibly othering or even possibly misogynistic. His reasoning was rather cultural than physiological. He noted that if sex for him came with the ever present possibility of rape, assault, death, pregnancy, and the kicker not even guaranteed an orgasm in the end, he would be far less likely to want sex. So the fact that women even desire it was shocking to him. Dr. Kate Lister’s book almost perfectly explores the nuance of this.
Dr Lister notes the orgasm gap, the risks throughout most of history of pregnancy and birth, the statistics of assault, intimate partner violence, rape, and the systemic way women were forced into dependency resulting in coerced sex ie rape, for basic access to society (eg a bank account, a home, going out on the street). The belief that sex was invented in 1963, seems more to me to be too vague. My belief is more of a MadMen era marketing gimmick to sell something we already had around the house, “Women, Now in Humanform! *Some manufacturing defects may result in unequal access to life, liberty, privileges, and rights. Limited time only! Not applicable in all locations. Dealers may sell for less. Fully customizable depending on the year.”
Honestly how women have survived without a coup in every timeline is shocking but how would we accomplish that when women could not get a passport without their husband’s consent in Australia till 1983. If that shocks you remember Afghanistan women and girls cannot travel more than 70km without a male family chaperone.
What does this have to do with orgasms - well everything! For some it’s a way into feminist theory, women’s rights, or perspective to understand how women’s have been denied as active participant in life/society based on having an innie not an outtie. It’s like arguing women don’t really need the same level of oxygen and wondering why they keep getting sleepy.
This book is for anyone who enjoyed feminism, sex, orgasms, history, and are ready to be filled with the spirit of righteous anger.
