About the author

Born in Tehran in 1977 and raised in Osaka Prefecture.

After graduating with a law degree from Kansai University, Nishi made her debut as a novelist with Aoi in 2004. Her sophomore novel Sakura became a best-seller next year. She is also known for her novels Tsutenkaku, Kofuku Midori no and Entaku.

Read through this book in one sitting. I still didn't like Takako, Ayumu's sister, but she gave a great message that people should focus on what they want to do with their lives, not compare themselves to others.
It was a very moving story, and I now understand why the childhood story of Ayumu over 300 pages was necessary.

上巻を読んで、下巻の目次を目にしたとたんにこの後の展開を想像でき、悲しいというか複雑な気持ちが襲ってきた。主人公の僕（歩：あゆむ）はどんどん大人になっていく。ただし、どちらかというと体だけが大人になり、精神の成長は子供の頃から変わらない。歩むが青年期を過ぎ、実年にさしかかるところで、異常行動の姉が自分の心の拠所を見つける。歩の拠所はなかなか見つからないが、姉やおばさん、父親の話を聞くうちに、自分を探す努力を始める。目次に書いている通りのストーリーだが、読者の想像を超える展開が待っている。上巻では、どうしようもない姉であり母親であり僕であったが、下巻ではそれぞれが自分の幸せを追求する。実は、この家族は最初から自分の幸せを追求していただけなのだが、その時々の言動が奇異だったりするだけだったのかもしれない。純粋に自分を生きていたのかもしれない。その人物の“芯”を探して、見つけて、自分の中心にすえたのかもしれない。この作品を読んで、生きる上で大事な何か（“芯”）を探すことが人生の目的であることように感じた。困難な道を歩むことになるのかもしれない。しかし、探さないことには幸せを掴めない。歩には魔法の言葉「サラバ」があった。自分には何があるのだろう。答えは出ないかもしれない。でも、私たちは答えを探して歩み続ける。
