Love is for the Brave : A Reverse Age Gap Romantic Comedy

Tattoos and tuxedos. Sarcasm and symphonies. One very profane parrot.

Sadie Carson is forty-four, happily single, and allergic to commitment. Her best friend has the perfect life, the perfect husband, and a parrot who screams obscenities at dinner guests. Sadie’s just here for the wine.

Then a world-famous conductor lands on her doorstep. He’s younger, impossibly handsome, and absolutely not what she ordered. Valen Santiago Delgado-Reyes quotes poetry, commands sold-out concert halls, and looks at Sadie like she’s the most fascinating thing he’s ever seen.

She gives him attitude. He gives her compliments that actually mean something. She tells herself it’s nothing. Her best friend tells her she’s full of it.

There’s just one problem. Well, several. He’s eight years younger. His family thinks she doesn’t belong in his world. And Sadie hasn’t let anyone past her walls in…ever.

Some walls don’t stand a chance.

A laugh-out-loud, swoon-worthy romance about second chances, found family, and the terrifying, wonderful chaos of letting someone love you anyway.

Sasha Marshall is a romance author with an inexplicable attraction to fictional men who probably wouldn’t return her texts in real life. Before channeling her attention deficit disorder into crafting happily-ever-afters, she spent her days as a professional herder of teenagers—think cats, but with more attitude and fewer survival instincts. Prior to that therapeutic experience, she documented the slow descent into madness that comes with touring alongside The Allman Brothers Band, wielding her camera like a weapon against sleep deprivation and questionable tour bus hours.

These days, when she’s not forcing her characters into compromising positions (literally—it’s called “romantic tension”), you can find her being emotionally manipulated by her two dogs, pretending her loved ones don’t secretly judge her book covers, engaging in crafts that look nothing like the Pinterest inspiration, or orchestrating literary chaos through Hot & Steamy Events—because apparently organizing book signings is what passes for a social life in the romance world.

She writes about bad boys with tattoos because, let’s face it, someone has to give these fictional delinquents the character development they desperately need.

Love is for the Brave by Sasha Marshall? Excuse me while I gush about these characters for a while. I can't help myself- getting to really know Sadie after meeting her in Love is for the Birds, as 'the best friend', was a true revelation. The hints and slow leaks of Sadie's top secret emotional scars made me love her even more when all her puzzle pieces finally clicked together.

Sadie's been hanging out in her own comfort zone for so long, her butt is practically velcroed to her couch. The bestie who's always had her back, has it again, knowing just when to call her out when that butt needed a good kicking. I could see the wheels turning in Valerie's head and where she would no doubt take it from there.

When Valen steps into Sadie's life, he knocks her safe little world out of its orbit. She's almost at a loss for words, which is hard to believe, but she wasn't expecting that...or him. But, in Sadie's mind, he's eight years younger and out of her league, but in my mind, I was chanting: 'chose to be brave, Sadie, chose to be happy'.  Valen is a one of a kind unicorn, and they don't come along very often.

The sarcastic, complicated badass tattoo artist has met her complete opposite and perfect match, after years of being alone. He's a classically trained musical wizard I couldn't take my eyes off of and let me tell you, this hot, younger maestro is going to burn up the pages as you read along. I felt every single note and emotion evoked from Valen's music, just like Sadie, wishing I had been sitting spellbound in the audience with her, to see and hear it as well. Now that's the kind of writing you can feel in your bones and soul.

Speaking of the hottest conductor who makes music that dreams are made of, Valen becomes even more romantic and swoonworthy with every sweet, accented word that floats out of his gorgeous mouth. I am officially melting. Never mind- I'm already there!

I was vibrating with excitement and smiling like a fool each time they crossed paths, intentionally of course, because Sadie can try, but she can't escape from those determined, match-making fairy godmothers for long. Hiding behind her trusty armor is not all it's cracked up to be and solitude may not be working for her anymore.

Valen sees deep into her soul, and that, to Sadie, ends up being everything. The two of them together? I loved being immersed in their well written, romantic as hell, touching, but often hilarious story. This author has a way with words I enjoy reading so much and get the biggest kick out of every time.

"...and for first time in a decade, I let myself believe that I deserve this. Maybe I deserve to be chosen."

Things that made my day, besides all the waves of love, crashing down around me, was the wittiest banter and warm, on point humor- it was enough to last me for the rest of the year! Horatio, the naughty, profane parrot is at it  again, on top of his game as usual, but with a bit of Spanish for a little extra fun. I really appreciated the minimal drama-  refreshing and without all the usual angst. Sadie and Valen captured my entire heart from beginning to end. The friends and family- found or otherwise, grounded Love is for the Brave with emotional connections and happy endings, adding depth to the backstories that shaped this story.

Love is for the Brave has been on my radar for a long time and I loved every page of it. If you're looking for a funny, sexy, feel- good book to sweep you off your feet, this one might be just right for you.

* I was given an early cooy of this book and this is my honest and freely given review of it.

Love Is For The Brave
Sasha Marshall

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️🌶️🌶️

I’m not going to lie, when I first started Love Is for the Brave, I was worried I was reading another version of Love Is for the Birds. Older woman/younger man, hesitation over the age gap, and a completely chaotic beginning.
But the more I read, the more Sadie and Valen became their own story.
Sadie is 44, sarcastic, tattooed, fiercely independent, and completely comfortable with the life she’s built. She doesn’t need anyone to save or complete her. Valen, younger, polished, ridiculously talented, and basically her opposite. But what I loved most is that he never tries to change her. Sadie can step into his elegant orchestra world in combat boots and still be completely herself. Their connection as artists was one of my favorite parts too. Valen has music. Sadie has tattooing. Different worlds, but they both understand what it means to create something together.
Of course Horatio is back, still bringing the same comedy, chaos, and calamity.
Sadie didn’t need Valen to complete her. She just had to decide if she was willing to make room for him.

“Make this our home, mi amor. Por favor.” Valen

This is laugh until you cry funny. We fell in love with Horatio the swearing parrot in Love Is For The Birds, and he is back in all his glory. Sadie has sworn off love and is happy running her tattoo shop until Valen, the new maestro for the symphony arrives. He teaches Horatio Spanish which of course includes colorful words along with terms of endearment. This is a story of love, family, found family, and proof that age is often just a number.

3.5/5 This is the second installment in Sasha Marshall's 'Love is for Birds' series. It picks up some time after the first installment, Love is for the Birds, and features Sadie, a forty-something tattoo artist with the world's highest walls, and Valen, a world-famous conductor who's determined to knock them down. As with the first installment, this is an age gap romance, with Sadie eight years older than Valen. Although that's a much smaller gap than in the first book, like the first book, it comes up a lot. There's also quite a bit of redundancy in the rhetoric between these characters. Maybe it's intentional to have them have the same conversation many many times over; if so, we noticed.

How these two come together is very sweet and fun, and the story has a steady (albeit quick) pace. Sometimes, you just need a low-angst love story, and this is exactly that.

I love that this book featured both the dog and the parrot from the original book. Oddly absent from this installment: Valerie's two adult sons. As close as Valerie and Sadie are, you'd think we'd see them at some point, but there's nary a mention.

Many thanks to BookSirens for an ARC in exchange for my honest assessment of this work.

Very cute, sweet and short reverse age gap (she’s 44, he’s 36) instalove romcom between a tattoo artist and a world renowned symphony conductor. With assists from Horatio the foul-mouthed parrot from Love is for the Birds and his “parents” Valerie and Wyatt.

I received an advance reader copy from the author and booksirens, and I’m sharing my honest review.

An adorable reverse age romance

Sadie and Valen were an unlikely match. Their chemistry started from the beginning. Sadie struggles with being too much and not enough, Valen says "I'm gonna love you" end of story. May we all find a Valen.
