Ummayyad ruler Hajjaj Bin Yusuf sent his Nephew, General Muhammad Bin Qasim, to rescue pilgrims who had been captured when Raja Dahir's forces from Sindh, Indus River Valley, attacked their ship. Muhammad Bin Qasim conquered Sindh introducing Islam to South Asia and giving Sindh the title of Bab-ul-Islam (The Gateway of Islam). He ended unjust treatment of the so-called 'untouchable caste' and incorporated the ruling class in his administration to establish law and order in the region.
Sharīf Husain (Urdu: شریف حسین), who used the pseudonym Nasīm Hijāzī (Urdu: نسیم حجازی, commonly transliterated as Naseem Hijazi, or Nasim Hijazi) was an Urdu writer famous for writing Islamic Historical fiction. Born in British India he settled in Lahore, Pakistan after independence. His novels based on Islamic history are considered one of a kind in Urdu literature.
Naseem Hijazi's novels are the reason I fell in love with historical fiction. He has this unique ability to mould the two components so brilliantly that the reader is pulled into the universe, breathing and living with the characters.
Coming to this particular story, Muhammad Bin Qasim is no stranger to us. At a mere age of 17, he achieved what no one has done yet, both in terms of conquest of land as well of hearts. He's someone who is cherished and idolized still and always will be. Whenever I use to read about him in textbooks, I was always 'star strucked' by his personality and to be able to read about him in such a unique and beautiful way is a great opportunity and I'm glad that I picked up this book
The author's writing style has always blown me away. I laughed, fought, felt sad, frightened and enchanted along with the characters. There were times when I had to stop for a moment to breathe, to prepare for the inevitable or to suck in the glory of our heroes. This book falls correctly into the category of 'lahu garmadena' books. And I'm more than ever proud to be a part of such an heroic nation
First book of Naseem Hijazi for me and I loved every bit of it. I think the author tried too hard to make romantic connection between characters which could have been avoided. Some battles and conquests are well explained as Muhammad Bin Qasim progressed through Sindh but I also wanted details of how Muhammad Bin Qasim crossed the Indus river and about the final war between his force and Raja Dahir's. This book although hasn't got all the details but the author style mesmerizes you and it's hardly a one sitting book.
Although naseem hijazi has written a brilliant novel but when a layman reads the combination of history and fiction that too a biased one, his perspective of history turns into a delusion. So, its a good literature but a very bad version of historical facts.
you can't compete in historical writing ... when its Naseem Hijazi.... he is the most beautiful writer in my point of view when its comes to History ... always enjoyed reading his books...
This book represents the way a Muslim Perceives this World. Especially the main Character Muhammad Ibn Qasim is like a burning lamp in darkness. This book shows an Ideal Muslim teenage Muhammad Ibn Qasim who became General of the Muslim Army at very Young Age. Muhammad bin Qasim sets a role model as a talented youth, naturally gifted,he works diligently throughout his life and when one of his companions asks the reason he work so hard his reply was that I want to become "That Last Star on the Sky",the one which promises a hope in absolute darkness that tomorrow the day would be shinier than ever. This books is a Master piece in Urdu Literature. I will Recommend this Novel to all Teenagers.
This is my first book of Naseem Hijazi and certainly not the last one. The genre that Naseem Hijazi plays with is Historical fiction. What he do is, he takes Historical Figures and events and weaves a wonderful, suspenseful, intriguing and emotional Yarn. Each and every character of this Book is unique and memorable. There were moments in this book which will be in mind for long time such as Letter of Naheed, speech of Muhammad Bin Qasim and Game of Joust. I will recommend this book to every one who can read Urdu. This book has everything History, Adventure, Drama and Lots of Action.
I remember reading this book back in 5th grade and suffice it to say that it haunted me for years! The characters grow in such remarkable ways and the way the story unfolds, is technically brilliant! Naseem Hijazi is a master of his craft.
The dialogues still echo in my head, more than 15 years later. An emotional ride, this book is a must read for all fans of historical fiction.
I haven't read novels like Naseem Hijazi’s. You can’t put this book down. The weaving of story within the milestones of history is an art of its own and Naseem Hizaji is execllent at it.
This book is spotting light on the magnificent history of Muslims. The way they conquered the lands and hearts. This book covers all the aspects of the brutality of Rajas in a unique condemnation style. It explains the entry of Muhammad Bin Qasim, his preaching of Islam through practice, his journey of success from Damascus to Multan, and splendid victory of Sindh against Raja Dahir. It also shed light on how our brave heroes like Muhammad bin qasim were martyred by jealousy of their own people.
The way author has blended the colors of emotions and romance with the archives is really an impressive task and I am highly impressed.
Author has challenged a popular opinion about murder of Muhammad bin qasim, which is narrated by many historians that he was killed by Hajaj bin Yousaf, who was his uncle and father-in-law also, the reason to claim is, when Muhammad bin qasim married another woman, his uncle Hajaj bin Yousaf killed him on account of cheating his daughter.
The author has denied and argued that he was hanged by Salman bin Abdul Malik the king and his ministers because of personal grudges as Muhammad bin qasim was an apple of every eye and famous for his bravery and character. They feel him a constant threat to their reputation.
I personally agree with author’s argument because I think at that time marrying more than one woman was a common tradition and not considered as bad to assassinate a person but it seems more logical that he was killed by those who are envied of his fame. Such killings were quite normal even among blood relations for continuity of throne.
The point I disagree with is unnecessary exaggeration. The reader feel himself drowning in immense romantic ocean and far away from the gist of novel which is Muslim’s golden period their love and respect for Islam.
I must say Reading such books which are the amazing blend of all types of literature is a blessing. They connect us with glorious past and we feel emotionally connected with those who are the true representation of Islam and Muslims.
When you think about Naseem Hijazi, two things come to mind. One, the humor that can't let you stay serious, or when it comes to his historical fiction, you can't hold your tears. They can be tears of inspiration, sometimes joy, and sometimes heart wrenching tragedies. Muhammad Bin Qasim is absolutely one of those novels.
Staying true to history, at the same time taking the story to another level of thrill and the development of fictionalized characters is superb. The sense of adventure, the march of Bin Qasim's and his forces itself turns into an adventure within an adventure. The perfectly knitted rivalry of the Caliph with Bin Qasim, and how it ends in a tragedy. Of course, the ones that read about history already know about the journey and the fate of Muhammad Bin Qasim. But filling the gaps in the story with fiction and coloring smartly with the tones of romance, rivalry, adventure, tragedy, and loss is an absolute accomplishment of Mr. Hijazi.
The first part of the book is long winded and there were numerous unnecessary narratives which could have been avoided. The second part is interesting and keeps the reader hooked. It could have been enriched even more if extraneous romantic affairs had not been discussed. Otherwise, I found it to be a decent historical fiction and Hijazi holds a unique distinction when it comes to Islamic history especially because it is seldom explored.
I love this novel, read it more than three times. About one of our Muslim hero Muhammad Bin Qasim, portrait his character marvelously. One can read this novel. Heart touching facts with illustration makes me so emotional.
Whole story was full of thrill, bravery, war tactics and emotions. But all this things was controlled via the power of Imaan. Climax was too cruel to acknowledge. Yes, it was Naseem Hijazi after all!
