Captain Berengar is finally going home to stay. His service in the King's Elite Guard is finished, and he can now spend his retirement making up for lost time with his family. With his friend Lieutenant Nisero by his side the Captain is having a pleasant journey, but they soon realize something isn't right. As they enter the village of Patron's Hill they are surrounded by death and destruction. Carefully looking through the burnt bodies of the villagers they come to a startling and frightening conclusion-the only person not slaughtered was the Captain's daughter. This brings no comfort however since it means she was kidnapped by the monsters that did this. Now Berengar and Nisero are on the trail of the murderers with one purpose-bring these men to justice or die trying.
Jon Kiln calls Forsaken a "heroic fantasy novel with action, suspense, and adventure," and he nails that description. Forsaken truly is all that and more. Everything about this book is good-the writing is smooth and flows easily, the story grabs you as soon as you start reading, you are transported to this incredible world that is clearly brought to life, and the characters are developed, believable, and relatable. Kiln brings everything to life in a way that makes it feel very real. You feel like you are part of the journey Berengar and Nisero are on; you see what they see, feel what they feel, experience what they experience. If you're looking for a book that will take you away from your normal life and keep you on the edge of your seat then you need to look no further than Forsaken. You will not regret it!
'Forsaken' is a good quest novel with jaunts across forbidding landscapes and tense moments of battle and headlong flights. The characterization is somewhat hit or miss as the well drawn heros of the story instead of using careful planning or tactical strategy instead make stupid decisions that unnecessarily endanger their lives. The villain of this story is a one dimensional caricature whom the author attempts to shroud in mystery and hinted at greater depths but ultimately fails. Despite said flaws 'Forsaken' is a quick paced an enjoyable read at a reasonable price.
A tough one to rate. I liked the story and I thought the characters were well-developed. However, I never really got engaged in any of the action sequences. It was like they were being described by someone that wasn't excited by what was happening. Accurate, yet not thrilling to me as a reader. I'm not sure how else to describe it.
