Tisha Porter didn’t think she was going to make it. Convinced she would die from her injuries, she left a blow by blow account of what happened to her and who was responsible. The why of it was still a mystery.
Thanks to Detective Harlan James, Tisha was on the mend, but she was ready to get out of her father’s house and back into a house of her own. She was anxious to see that recently renovated old Victorian home and buy if she liked it. She wasn’t counting on the stress being too much for her still too weak body.
Zachery Douglas was hosting the open house in the old Victorian. They’d had more than two hundred people tour the house so far which was far more than he expected. And when Tisha walked through the door, he knew what she was to him, and he’d do anything he had to do to make her his.

'Zachery' is the sixth and final book in Kathi S. Barton's "The Pride of the Double Deuce" series and be prepared, this is a powerful conclusion to an already outstanding read. Tisha Porter was fortunately in that she was the only child raised by a wealthy father. She was also an elementary school teacher who loved not only her profession but the children she felt privileged to have in her classroom. Tisha also had a good heart and a giving nature. That's why she was having such a hard time wrapping her mind around the fact that she had been attacked in her own home, brutally terrorized, and left for dead. If it hadn't been for the Detective who came to speak to her about the bombing at her school she'd have never survived. Zachery has decided he's going to become a farmer, working the land, rather than a rancher. He's also decided he's going to get his real estate license for the partnership he's going into with Landon. He has a good heart and a great work ethic but he can't say no when someone asks something of him nor can he ask for help when he knows he needs it. It takes the entire Douglas family to set him straight when he's about to lose everything and fall on his face. This is a powerful read just with the Hero and heroine themselves, then add the evil that runs through the pages and it becomes chilling. Once again Ms. Barton's emphasis on family loyalty and love is prominent and good always overtakes evil.
It's bad. Real bad. Detective Harlan James can't fathom the destruction that was once an elementary school. Thankfully, it hadn't resumed yet for the new year, but unfortunately, there were people inside that lost their lives. They need to find the teacher, Tisha, who's room contained the most damage, seeming to be the center of what happened. Harlan tries her house and what he discovers there will haunt him forever.
Zach is struggling. He's trying to do too much with not enough time and no help, not that he'd even ask for any. He's not his usual self, and his family is noticing. It's impacted him so much, he's starting to judge strangers, automatically assuming the worst of someone he hasn't met yet, a woman, Emma's friend, that was injured and is recuperating.
Tisha hurts...a lot. She has no idea why someone she believed she was on friendly terms with would do this to her. She had resigned herself to dying after the person left, having no way to get help for herself, but thankfully, it arrived anyway. The detective literally saved her life. After being discharged from the hospital, and losing her mind recuperating for so long, she starts making plans. She can never go back home, but there's one place she's always wanted to make hers, and it's for sale.
Zach and Landon, long-time family friend and his brother, Mason's, father-in-law, recognizes the silent call for help in Zach, and as he isn't one to sit idle himself, he proposes a partnership with Zach, and thus begins their new venture. This is also how Zach meets Tisha. When she visits their open house, he knows instantly who she is to him, but he notices right away the pain she's still in and vows to take things slowly. She knows about shifters and mates though, which makes things somewhat easier on Zach.
As Zach and Tisha begin discovering one another, both know the threat to Tisha isn't finished as the culprit isn't done with their "work" yet. Zach and Tisha are determined to move forward with their lives, while still keeping one eye on the past, knowing it could return at any time.
Can Zach keep Tisha safe? Will they capture the person responsible for so much pain and loss? Will Tisha recover completely? How will they react upon learning some hurts can't be healed? Is their enough love in their hearts to help others in need? Will Zach finally ask for help from his family, realizing how proud they are of him? Will Zach and Tisha get their HEA?
One-click now and follow along as two people meet, discovering the love that will see them through any obstacle. Please keep in mind this is the sixth and final book in this series and I highly recommend reading them in order, especially since we're given a lovely look into the family's future at the end.
**I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.**
unfortunately, the best thing i can say about this book is it's the last one in the series so I don't have to force myself to read any more of them to finish the series off. it was boring (even the sex scenes), the characters where dull & one dimensional, the villain plot lines (there were 2 female with separate "causing trouble for the Douglas clan" story lines) were undeveloped, flat and over before they started, there was no tension of any kind or much of anything in the story. anytime an issue or problem came it it was immediately and miraculously resolved. the writing felt like a 1st draft that was never fleshed out and much of felt like another rehash variation of the prior books. it even felt like the author was tired of it all and just wanted to get out so she too could be done with the series. after reading the prior books, my expectations weren't for much. I was able to get the book on sale (not worth full price at all IMHO, maybe not even the sales price i paid) since wanted to be able to mark the series complete. but even with low expectations, this book still managed to not meet them and was a complete dud for me. the books, series & characters all had potential that didn't even come close to being explored.
Tisha and Zac were a great couple. Both had good hearts, kindness and seemed kind of shy. The relationship between the two main characters starts off rocky but they always seem to find their way. Tisha is from money but she doesn't flaunt it. She takes pride in paying her way. Zac feels like he is the black sheep of the family, he just doesn't seem like he can get a break and feels like a failure if he asks for help. Danger is always present adding suspense and keeping you on the edge of your seat. I just loved Landon's contribution to this story, he also has a big heart and loves those Deuce boy's as his own. With the overlapping of stories, characters and family interactions the author allows the reader to see the growth of the people we have come to care about. As the last book in the series, we are privileged in being allowed to see a glimpse into the future, getting some closure and saying good bye to a family that slipped into our hearts as we turned the pages. Another series ends but I hope this author has more ideas to keep us entertained. I volunteered to read this story for my honest opinion.
What a bang to the start of the last book. Destruction to the elementary school that luckily hadn't start term yet; has left the detective wondering what happened and why as well as trying to fine the missing teacher that her room took the most damage in.
The detective fines his missing teacher but Tisha is waiting for death to take her as well as wondering why her friend and colleague from the school has hurt her so bad.
Zack is struggling with his farm and other things but is not willing to ask for help from his family who is starting to notice that he has changed but not for the good and they start to take action to help him. Zack and Landon long term friends/ neighbors and considered family take on a new project of renovation to houses.
Tisha who is friends with Emma, knows she can't stay home with her dad so makes plans to move to a house that has recently been renovated and that she has wanted since she was a child.
Zack and Tisha have hard times to over come together as the person who hurt Tisha is still out there.
This story had me gripped from the start until the beautiful end. It's a series that is a must read.
In this last installment of The Pride of the Double Deuce, Douglas brother Zachery finds his mate. In addition to running the family ranch, Zach now has his realtor license, so he spends his time buying, restoring then selling homes. Not sure if he'll ever find that special someone like his brothers have found......until he sees her.
Tisha Porter is a teacher and finds herself in real trouble when she's at the mercy of a serial killer. Recovering from her ordeal and visiting a Victorian home for sale. Tisha encounters a handsome sexy man....a wonderful attraction between them starts to happen and an amazing future begins to form beyond her wildest dreams. Though there is still danger around the corner for her, Tisha has a her sexy cowboy shifter to protect her.
This was a perfect ending to a great series and getting a look into their future fifteen years down the road was an added bonus!
Zach and Tisha were adorable. I love how quickly mates get together in books by Kathi S. Barton. The way they handle tough times together. And nothing was tougher than what Tisha had to endure. That Alex lady??? Yikes!!! I don't want to spoil anything by saying too much but holy moly. Whackadoo!! Tisha and Zach had so much love to give and taking in Michael and Loren was just perfect. I loved the glimpse into the future at the end. Seeing the extended HEAs for characters I care about is one of the best parts of a book.
** I received a feee copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
Tisha Porter was attacked and thought she was dying, so she wrote what had happened to her and who did it. Luckily she survived and was looking for a new home. Zachery Douglas was the carpenter working on the old Victorian home she wanted to buy. He knew when he met her they were to be together. Nice job Kathi, this was a sweet love story. If you want to know what happens you will have to read this one
All Tisha wanted to do was teach. But a psycho has it out for her, and has left her for dead in her house on the same day a bomb goes off in the school. She was their #1 suspect until Detective Harlan James finds her with what is bloody notes of who and what her attacker did to her. While she's on the mend she is living with her father, but knows she needs to get back out and start living on her own. She's found a beautiful Victorian home that she wants to look at and hopefully buy for her new start. However, unbeknownst to Tisha, her new start involved a very determined cowboy/cougar who is claiming she is his mate.
Zachery is the last single Douglas. He's been keeping his problems to himself as to not be a hindrance to the rest of the family. But the Douglas clan sticks together and will do whatever it takes to help out Zach whether he wants it or not. When his first open house comes to pass, he never expected the woman who would complete him to walk through the door.
**"Zach, am I really your mate?" "No. You're more than that...you're my everything."**
Kathi sure does know how to end a series! I absolutely love getting the extended epilogue that gives us a bit of how the family is and what they've done in the future. However, I will say it's a tear jerker as well, and I would expect no less from Kathi!
**I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book**
The title is mostly for the evil woman that was in this story; she did some terrible things. & she started out with a school & then went on to try & kill Zach’s soon to be mate.
Zachery, or Zach as he’s mostly called throughout this series is a farmer more so than a rancher. He grows the feed that you would use at a ranch or a farm with animals to feed.
Tisha is a school teacher but before she can even start this year not only is her school blown up but she’s also attacked in her own home by another teacher who thinks that she’s doing the “Lord’s work”. Tisha & Emma are friends & since Tisha’s dad lives in the same town as Emma that is where Tisha went to recuperate after getting out of the hospital.
Tisha was looking for a new home when she meets Zach & Zach of course knows instantly that she’s his mate. But, because of the attack that Tisha suffered she’s unsure whether or not that Zach will still want her.
This book was very good & had a little of a sad ending.
Loved the Douglas family and sad that Zach's story brings it to and end. Loved Zach and Tisha. Zach is a man who can't say no, and has his hand in so many projects. Trying to do everything on his own is taking it's tole. It takes the whole extended Douglas family to straighten him out. Tisha is from a wealthy family. Loves teaching 2nd grade. When she is brutally attacked by a co-worker she heads home to recuperate. Looking for a home she finds Zach. They bring out the best in each other. Loved Landon's epilogue. A great ending to a great series.
Man, I'm always sad when I finish one of these series, but, uplifted by the way the author ends it!
The last book in these series are a whole story of the journey to true love is the greatest, but, at the end, I get to see how all of their lives turned out! I absolutely love having a conclusion to what and where everyone is in the future of their lives!!! Nobody writes like Kathi S Barton!!!
this is last series which sees Zac meet his mate. All the brothers and other characters feature. Seeing how the Douglass boys have met their other half has been a great roller coast series. This finished nicely but still managed to make you slightly sad. A great story as always
Zachery is the last book in The Pride of the Double Deuce series by Kathi S. Barton. and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Not only was Zachery a very lovable character but Tisha was delightful. The two had some steamy chemistry. Ms Barton ended the series by leaping forward several years and letting the reader know how all the couples from the series were doing. I really enjoy that.
