Imagine you are a 17-year-old boy. A boy whose memory and backbone were stolen seven years ago in a hit and run accident. A boy who can't cope ... with anything.
Now imagine the last seven years were a lie.
Pushed into taking an impossible leap of faith, Max Anderson's life is changed forever … from wimp to all-powerful, from hopeless dreamer to instant love interest, from the brink of despair to the edge of survival.
But why do his only friends need Max? Why can only he locate an abducted girl? And will their actions risk discovery of their kind, a secret kept hidden for more than 200 years?
"The Evolved" is an action adventure with a sci-fi theme suitable for young adults and older.
Simon Jenner is best known for the bestselling ETHAN JUSTICE series, dark-humoured action thrillers with unforgettable main characters. He also wrote the critically acclaimed THE EVOLVED, the first in a young adult sci-fi trilogy, with the second book still in development. His latest book, DON’T CALL ME BETH, is an epic psychological thriller which is receiving much early praise.
Simon lives in Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, with his wife, Julia.
I had no expectations when I started The Evolved, no idea of where the story would take me. As I read, I became more and more gripped in a world of mind games, not realising at the start how Simon Jenner would take me into the future. George Orwell's 1984 crossed my mind. The characters have many facets which were gradually revealed, I loved the humour which crept in and there is plenty of action as more intriguing characters enter the stage. A great read which I thoroughly enjoyed and it left me looking forward to the next in the trilogy.
This may be a YA book but that won’t keep adults from being unable to put this book down, too. Simon Jenner has created a realistic, scary, and fascinating undated future and a main character that exudes 17-year-old male hormones and all that entails. Just like with his thriller Ethan Justice series, his storytelling is face-paced and hooks you quickly. I was unable to read it in one sitting, life getting in the way and all, but couldn’t wait to get back each time I left it. This story has a satisfying conclusion for the first in a trilogy and definitely left me anxious for the next book to come out.
Great book. I can't believe it doesn't have more reviews. This is a YA PNR/thriller. So well written, so well paced, that I could hardly put it down. Max's development from his tragic 10th year to his self discovery at 17 is spellbinding. The mix of action, suspense and intrigue is gripping. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a YA PNR with thrilling action.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. Thanks Simon!
This makes the fourth Jenner book I've read and I have enjoyed all of them. I got started on the Ethan Justice series and was hooked by the first few paragraphs of book 1. If you will read the Justice series in order you will see how Jenner develops in his writing skills. By the time you read The Evolved you will see that Simon wears the role of the good author like a second skin. This is a YA book but that doesn't matter. I was so into this one that I would forget what time it was...it is that good. The book starts out in one period of time and then jumps forward several years and Simon does an excellent job of painting the picture and filling the reader in on all of the changes that have taken place. While I was reading this section I kept thinking of Marty McFly in Back to the Future II where he was so amazed at the changes that have taken place in his town. I cannot tell you enough how much Simon Jenner has developed in his writing. His descriptive skills were always good but now it seems that he is writing on another level. His books deserve to be place on the shelf with more well known authors and The Evolved just goes the extra step in proving that point. I did not know what to expect with this being a YA book, I was thinking it would be more along the lines of Harry Potter or Percy Jackson but The Evolved blew past them. I really like the Justice series but I liked this book so good that it wouldn't offend me if Jenner took a break from the Justice series and focused on getting out the final two books in this trilogy. Again, this is a really good book and I enjoyed every page of it.
Simon Jenner is an astoundingly great author! I have read all of his books and have loved each and every one of them!
I loved The Evolved!!! It's an exciting, thrilling, heart-stopping sci-fi YA novel about Max Anderson, a terrified and wimpy teenager whose life is about to change forever! Simon Jenner is adept at creating antagonists who will make your blood run cold! This dystopian novel is for readers who love sci-fi, mysteries, thrillers, dramas, YA serials or just great novels. I highly recommend The Evolved and Simon Jenner. You will not be disappointed purchasing The Evolved, the Ethan Justice series (Origins, Relentless or Incendiary), Lust Knows Where You Work: 5 Dark Short Stories of Suspense or The Mystical Wood (Rhyming Children's Picture Books Ages 4-8 Book 10). Simon Jenner has a great voice in weaving exciting tales that will jump off the page and make you very happy you gave his book a try. :)
This story, suitable for young adults and older, tells of a dystopian near-future in which seventeen-year-old Max Anderson finds himself part of a group of people with highly evolved powers. The reason their abilities have been kept secret and the conditions in which many of their fellow citizens live, become clear as the story progresses.
Max is a likeable character, at once naive and highly gifted. Being thrust into his full powers is like experiencing a mega-puberty within two or three days. His reactions are funny and rather endearing. However, the story is a gripping one with a suitably evil rival and the end was an exciting ride. This is the first in a series and I'll certainly be looking out for the second.
Simon Jenner author of the brilliant Ethan Justice thrillers returns with THE EVOLVED a brilliant young adult Sci-fi fantasy novel set in the near future Max Anderson is a timid young boy but one day his world changes forever when he discovers the last 7 years of his life have been a lie! Max discovers he has special abilities and with the help of two of his best friends the Winchesters Max is recruited to help find s missing girl.
Jenner has done it again and written another awesome novel, I can't wait for the next in this series.
Excellent story & characters. I was in it from the start. Fantastic debut into the YA genre. Hey! I'm young at heart :) Can hardly wait for more! Don't ever stop writing Simon. Please. I don't know how I'm going to handle waiting for this AND the next Ethan Justice book! Take your time tho; we'll just have to cope :) Thanks! It's awesome! WOOHOO!!
I really enjoyed the premise of this story and it was at times really fast paced and enjoyable.
For me there was a bit too much focus on the teenage kissing (although it might be realistic, I’m just a little too old to enjoy detailed descriptions of 17/16 year olds french kissing) and young love angst. I’m sure this book would be a four or even five star for the right person.
Excellent book! Simon has moved into the YA genre with a great debut. I enjoyed the overall journey and the multiple twists. Not overall very predictable which makes for a much better book. Well worth the read especially if you are a fan of his Ethan Justice Books
Outstanding! Very interesting story with mind-bending "it could happen" events involving a group of special folks. Can't wait to read more books by Simon Jenner!!
