Set in seventeenth century England against a backdrop of civil war, witch hunts and religious upheaval, this historical romance tells the story of Anne Somerton, a respected noblewoman with a passion she dare not admit and a secret she must never confess.

At the age of eleven, Anne's friendship with a village wise woman causes her to be examined by the witch finders, an experience that leaves her with deep emotional scars, not least guilt when her mentor is put to death. Soon after, her father comes into money and she marries into the aristocracy, but her husband is thirty years her senior and they have little in common. When he leaves to fight for King Charles, she is left to run the family estate. Soon the country is ravaged by war and Anne turns to her old mentor’s skills for guidance. Enemy forces surround her home and she is trapped along with her household and two dangerous clergymen. Every day her affiliation to the dark arts grows closer to discovery, but it is not until a wounded Parliamentary officer comes into her care that the scene is finally set for her dénouement.

I first decided to become an author at about age 7 when I discovered Narnia (sadly not in the back of a wardrobe but on a bookshelf in the school library). Once I realised the written word could transport me from the humdrum of daily life to somewhere amazing where normal rules didn't apply,I was hooked. C S Lewis led me to Kenneth Graham and then Enid Blyton, until a teenage diet of Errol Flynn movies and Jean Plaidy novels inspired my love affair with history.

Fair Game came about by accident; I was writing a book which involved flash-backs to the seventeenth century, which I sent to a literary consultancy for help with editing. They loved the historical element of the story and suggested it could hold its own as a novel in its own right, so I set about a new draft.

Essentially a love story, Fair Game is based in the 17th century, during the English civil war. The plot and setting came about when I read about the women who took on the defence of their homes when their husbands left to fight. The novel was written to celebrate these women’s ingenuity and courage.

I was also drawn to the 1640s because of the religious upheaval taking place alongside the political unrest; the new religions pitted against each other, only united in one respect – the persecution of ‘witches’. I do like a bit of romance mingled with a smattering of the occult, and I hope Fair Game achieves this.

Anna Nagel has written an atmospheric and suspenseful novel that kept me entertained to the very last page. With witch-finders breathing down her neck, an enemy army camped outside her door and a traitor in her midst, Anne Somerton proves a resourceful heroine, but it is the romance between Anne and Hugh that lies at the heart of this well crafted novel.
A must read for lovers of quality historical fiction, highly recommended.

This was recommended by a friend even though it is not my usual fiction genre but so glad I read it. I t was a great read. I was drawn more and more into the world of superstition and magic of the period to the point that I could not put my kindle down. Can not wait for the next book.
