I received an advance copy and this is my honest review.

I liked the book, but struggled deciding how to rate and review. I think the story and characters are solid. I’m not a rock climber, but the discussion of climbing sounded convincing and thorough and flew well above my head. Initially, the lingo made it difficult to connect with the story, but as time passed, I kinda tuned it out. I like the perspective of recovery from a hurricane and how that influences so many parts of the story. I also like seeing the strong representation for hypermobility, which I’ve seen in one other book before. This book is unique, showing that challenge for a college athlete and how it impacts Teddy’s choices every day.
Both main characters have interesting stories and distinct personalities. I enjoyed getting to know them and how they connect with each other. That’s my first gripe, though. I don’t feel like the MCs developed enough together. There are a few moments of vulnerability and honesty, but they are brief and isolated. Most of their interactions are fun and light and physical. There’s nothing wrong with that, but what are their goals, hopes, dreams, families (Teddy), backgrounds (Teddy), etc. I don’t feel like I know what these guys want to do after college, or even next year. In the positive, we know a fair bit about Rex’s background and family, but very little about Teddy’s. They never really have a substantial talk about hypermobility so that Rex can understand it and be knowledgeable about ways he can support Teddy. Rex doesn’t talk much about his dad and Teddy barely talks about his family. What are their majors? What did they do in high school? Favorite foods, music, movies, etc.? We know they spend time together off page, but that doesn’t help fill in the gaps on page.
Things seem to progress quickly over very few encounters, but a fair bit of time elapses, so I’m mixed on that front. They see each other about once a month. If my count is correct, they have 3 encounters/spicy scenes, but only two dates, when the T.A.B. happens. The attachment and the fight feel out of place for a second date/third encounter. That’s not me criticizing the timeline, it’s just how I understood their emotional connection at the time. One MC pushes hard and the other MC isn’t ready, which isn’t a big stretch to understand.
The end of the book has some additional frustrations. The apology feels inadequate for what that scene morphs into. , without discussion, is a violation of that scene partner’s trust. It’s also just stupid and irresponsible, especially knowing that person’s medical challenges. Low points for the apology and negative points for the scene.
The messaging around the grand gesture also feels awkward: , get redemption. It’s not how that scene is presented, but the more I thought about it and the more the epilogue explained it, the less I liked the look of things. Yes, it benefits people who need the help, but it also feels like . I’m much more impressed by Rex actually showing up for Teddy in public. The epilogue ties up loose threads, but it feels a little too easy. I wish there was more earned redemption and growth. I also wish we knew anything about them beyond the immediate winter holiday ahead.
Again, I liked the book, but I wanted more out of it, particularly the resolution and ending.

**ARC READER REVIEW**
I have exactly zero interest in rock climbing and yet I was hooked on this story from the beginning.
I loved the disability rep. It was refreshing to read a positive story of someone not allowing their disability to stop them from achieving their goals (broken finger not withstanding) rather than read about someone continually suffering.
I’m a sucker for both a character who seems asshole-y on the surface but is just scared of opening up, and a redemption arc, so I loved Rex and his journey of discovering his sexuality and eventually finding the courage to love Teddy.
I fully expected them both to take part in the competition so the fact that they didn’t was a surprise and one I actually liked. Especially after Rex’s donation and the front page kiss taking attention away from Andy.
The story as a whole was well written, with interesting characters that I enjoyed, with not too much rock climbing jargon that would leave you confused but enough so that you understood what they were doing and believed the MMC’s skills and understand why they love it.
The spice was good too. The story stuck a good balance between plot and spice and I loved that despite Rex’s lack of experience with me he turned out to be the dominant one!
All in all a thoroughly enjoyable story with likeable characters, good spice and a happy ending.

This was such a fun read. Two college athletes, rock climbers both, who had been rivals suddenly connect on a new level.
Rex is a no nonsense type who has a reputation for being a jerk. Last year, he lost everything during a hurricane. Soon after, he was found climbing the cupola of a building at the university and was suspended from the climbing team. He really had lost everything.
Teddy had always been the second best climber in the team, but now that his competition was off the team, he had a real chance to be number one. Only one problem: he has never climbed outside a gym, and a big outdoor climbing competition was coming up.
As he attempts his first outdoor climb, he runs into Rex who begins to help him. Teddy is gay and finds Rex attractive, but Rex is straight.
Or maybe not so much. Rex has these new desires to get with Teddy… and maybe use some of the climbing ropes for some added ooh la la.
This story explored loss and internalized homophobia while providing representation for para-athletes and hypermobility disorder. I really enjoyed the sexual tension between Rex and Teddy, and the spice level was high.
If you enjoy gay athletes kissing, bisexual awakening, disability rep, and consensual bondage and humiliation, this book is for you. I loved it.

Overall, I enjoyed this story between Rex and Teddy (don't call him Theodore!), 2 climbing team rivals dealing with the status quo after one of them is booted off the team. I enjoyed the progression of their rivalry turned climbing partners/lovers & how even in the early stages of them becoming more than rivals, there was still rivalry underlying it. The spicy scenes were hot (though I think a safe word discussion would have been most appropriate, but at the same time, neither of them is really in knowledgeable/in the scene - stuff happens spontaneously). After a slow burn (~50%ish) and development, the last third or so of the book felt a little too quickly wrapped up. I enjoyed Rex's character development, their romance, and the overall story itself.

Wow—what a ride! The story follows Rex Fortier, the top senior climber banned from team events after a daring free-climb, and his fierce rival Theodore “Teddy” Plinth, who’s always right behind him. Add in Kaitlyn, their complicated link, and Andy Sampieri announcing an epic October climbing competition, and you’ve got nonstop tension and heart.

Rex and Teddy were the top climbers for their college team until Rex got kicked off the team. An upcoming competition has Teddy asking for Rex’s help, and spending time together brings forth attraction.
This story was interesting as climbing is not a common sport to read about and it was fun to learn about, and there is a good amount of technical discussion but the author provides a glossary which was helpful. Both Rex and Teddy were likable characters, and I appreciated that even as Rex hesitates to be open about his attraction to Teddy he eventually embraces it without too much fuss. The rope play was especially steamy, but I do wish there was a discussion about safety, limits and safewords. This appears to be a newer author and it was a good read, I would have really liked to see where Rex and Teddy ended up after college.

The context of the North Carolina flooding is a little closer to home than usual for me, since I'm just next door in SC, so that was interesting to see! I loved the representation with Teddy and Mei, and it was actually plot relevant. The spice was definitely spicy, but I was so, SO here for it, DAMN! Basically, perfect book, 10 out of 10, would recommend, please give me more thank you.

4.25 stars. It was a real highlight to learn about competitive climbing, which I knew very little about. Rex is everything you need for a somewhat troubled bad boy type, and his bi-awakening fit him perfectly. Teddy persevering in spite of his bad joint issues was inspiring, as a person who has much less extreme hypermobile joints I would never have dared to try such a sport. The rivals part was well done, it made a lot of sense that they really disliked each other, and the resolution was good.

The characters were very appealing and likeable and complicated and absolutely perfect together. Plot was intriguing and exciting and well paced. World building was excellent and solidly drawn. Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.

A quick, sweet, and slightly spicy read. For me, I think there is more sports than romance, which isn't inherently a bad thing. I do think there was a lot of emphasis placed on ensuring the reader understands climbing, the terminology, etc. It did detract from the romantic relationship portion for me. As stated, it's a short read and as such things move fast and I believe you'll be left wanting more. However, for a shorter reader I did find it to be cute, and definitely delivers on the sports front.

The heat, the push and pull, the connection is amazing. While they still have to find their way together once it starts they can't stop.

This took the college sports rival genre to a new level! It’s rare to find a climbing romance, but this is the best of its kind! I loved the chemistry between these two and their rivalry felt realistic and the way their walls came down was beautifully written.

Cute and easy read!! Teddy & Rex are collegiate rock climbers, which was such a fresh take on college sports romance!
Belaytionship is a novella length book, so it’s a perfect palette cleanser after a long or heavy read.
There’s also really good hurricane aftermath awareness as well!!
And some bondage kinks if you’re into that kind of thing 😉

My jaw was on the floor. This shit was so fucking good omg. I hate slow stories and I hate rushed stories, this was the perfect middle. Both of the characters are amazing. I loved the disability rep all through this, I didn’t even know it was going to be there but I was so glad it was. I’ve had a few experiences with books claiming to be spicy and then really letting me down, NOT HERE!!

Very enjoyable read. I liked the unique setting inside the world of rock climbing. The backgrounds of the characters were interesting and I liked them both. I did think Rex came across as a bit of a sex expert which isn’t necessarily realistic for a college guy who’s never had sex with a man before. Kink also without any kind of discussion. I wasn’t terribly bothered but it requires a bit of suspension of disbelief perhaps.

It was a good story. Good plot and kinda spicy bi-awakening. Dual POV and well written, not mechanical.

I thought this book was fantastic - I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Except for one scene near the end, when Rex went to get coffee and pastries and it was just... nope, so completely not okay, and I'm left feeling dissatisfied, which is a shame given how much I enjoyed the rest of the book.

I really enjoyed reading Belaytionship by Nick Alamance. This was a rivals to lovers, sexual awakening, sweet read about Rex and Teddy. This was a pretty good read, I enjoyed the storyline and the characters.

I love that this books is a dual POV spicy rivals-to-lovers MM romance novel with a bisexual awakening and that it’s a different sport story line too amazing book.

I love the cute banter. I like the soft enemies to lovers trope they're young and they irritate each other but it isn't cutthroat.
