Two areas of my personal leadership that I am focusing on this year are being a servant leader with a strong authentic leadership style. It’s not easy to find great books or guides on developing an authentic leadership style. I was excited to find the book “Wired for Authenticity Seven Practices to Inspire, Adapt, & Lead” by Henna Inam and I wasn’t disappointed!
Authenticity is critical to being an effective leader. People know when leaders lack authenticity and credibility. True leaders have compassion, clarity, transparency, and trust. This may be a complete change and struggle for some leaders to achieve. Hence, they need to change from within in order to influence from the outside.
The key to authenticity is trust. Gaining trust in yourself and others. We are all born with unique skills and gifts that are a part of us and who we are. When we experience life, find new leanings, and develop as individuals we are on our way to becoming more authentic beings and ultimately better leaders. The key to success is developing a strong self awareness whereby you can better connect with family, friends, and team members. Growth in these areas enables us to “rewire” ourselves to be stronger leaders that can make new authentic connections and decisions.
“Wired for Authenticity” is a great practical book to put to use right away in developing your skills. It’s divided into 3 sections: • The definition of authenticity and why it’s so important • 7 practices for authenticity • How to bring authenticity alive
What’s even better is that each chapter in these sections is flushed out with effective follow-ups and personal stories to really explain Inam’s thoughts and hit home the points that she makes. Every chapter offers: • Main point summaries • Questions to ask yourself • Exercises to put into practice
Henna Inam’s book really is a journey in development and personal growth. You can go at your own pace and there’s a lot of guidance to help you. This book will really assist you in becoming a better person, friend, and leader. You will find yourself at peace with more confidence. You will be more aware but less overwhelmed by life.
If you want to be more engaging, innovative, lead with purpose, and empower others with self awareness and purpose, pick up this book. “Wire for Authenticity” really serves you the principles that you need to develop, grow, and succeed!
I have been a fan of authenticity for many years and much of what I have read over the years has been fluff however Henna Inam has managed to bring the topic into an intelligent discussion. The structure of this book is very practical and useful. Each chapter ends with a recap, questions to ask yourself and suggested experiments one can try in their own lives.
She understands that the structure of organizations is rapidly evolving to a flatter, more efficient framework and this requires leaders that are self-aware, transparent and have integrity. I love some of her examples because many reflect situations I have been familiar with in my own career so the relevancy is confirmed making it more personal.
It's about time we have a solid, well written book on the topic of being authentic. Too many of our relationships today are shallow and manipulative so if you choose to be authentic then that practice stops. My thanks to Henna for covering this excellent topic so well.
It is one of those words that gets thrown around in business a lot these days. So much so that I often wonder if anyone stops to think about what it really means.
That was my prevalent thought and question as I began reading the new book from Henna Inam. I wanted the book to cast new and useful light on this overused word, and I was a bit skeptical as to whether it would or not.
As I write to you now, I can say that it does helpfully add to the conversation, clarifies some things, and most importantly, provides a tangible plan to build your authenticity and become more real for yourself and as a leader.
Henna Inam talks about the mask we wear in order to be accepted. What we do to fit in with our belief of what it means to be on 'good behavior'. We spend so much time and effort focused on conforming, we often do not know all of who we are. It doesn't help that we are frequently rewarded for conforming, not for being who we are. She talks about how having limiting beliefs can also prevent us from experiencing the whole of who we really are, or from what we're truly capable of becoming.
The book is very insightful, with real life stories and practical exercises towards learning to become our more authentic selves.
Excellent book that can easily be applied to all areas of life: work, family, community. A must read!
This is the only book out there that actually gives leaders best practices for being authentic. If I had to retitle the book, it would be "Authenticity 101." This is a must read for all who want to be authentic in leading change and innovation.
Henna Inam not only puts her finger on the most important feature of a great leader, she massages it to deliver a powerful and practical working book on the how's and why's of leadership. Wired for Authenticity is a must read for anyone interested in leadership greatness.
