Secrets of Castle Negru
The children are too quiet. The doctor is too charming. And the handyman is not who he seems.
Transylvania, 1847. The road through the Carpathian mountains had warnings enough—the storm, the broken carriage wheel, the superstitious driver who abandoned them at the washed-out bridge. But with her companion injured and Castle Negru the only shelter for miles, Fiona Foster has no choice but to seek refuge within its walls of black stone.
A widow and nurse of independent means, Fiona expects to stay one night, see to her companion's injury, and continue on their way. Instead she finds herself stranded at an eerie orphanage where the children move with uncanny precision, speak in identical flat tones, and look at her with eyes too empty for their age. The castle's physician offers easy reassurances. Fiona is not certain she believes him.
The man she cannot place is Nicholas, the castle's handyman, too educated for his position, too watchful for a man with nothing to hide, and here for reasons of his own that he keeps as close as the castle's hidden passages.
The longer she remains, the more she begins to wonder whether the castle's haunting strangeness is real or imagined or something else altogether. But Castle Negru does not surrender its secrets easily, and if she cannot find the truth before someone decides she knows too much, she may not leave at all.
Secrets of Castle Negru is a full-length companion to the Love's Journey series and a complete standalone story.

Secrets of Castle Negru by K. Lyn Smith was a captivating 5-star read. It was a clean romance with a perfect gothic ambiance. The story was filled with mystery and eerie vibes, and I thoroughly enjoyed the romance. If you’re a fan of historical romance with a strong gothic feel, this book is a must-read. This author never disappoints, and I highly recommend it.
I received a ARC and all thoughts are mine.

Stranded at an eerie, isolated Transylvanian castle, children who don’t behave normally, a handsome handyman full of secrets, a charming doctor & his stern teaching companion, & things that go bump in the night, I absolutely adored Secrets of Castle Negru! K. Lyn Smith delivers all the spooky gothic vibes reminiscent of The Mysteries of Udolpho, Dracula, & Frankenstein, with a uniquely compelling story & swoon-worthy romance. I easily devoured this delightfully gothic Victorian romance in a day!
Widowed young & independently wealthy, Fiona & her companion are traveling to the nearest train station when a storm disables their carriage & Glynnis is injured. With the bridge washed out & abandoned by their driver, they seek shelter at Castle Negru, which has been turned into an orphanage. Though welcomed by the castle’s charming doctor, Fiona can’t help but feel there’s more to him than meets the eye. Then there’s Nicholas, the handyman who seems far too educated for his station. And if the spooky atmosphere isn’t enough, there’re the orphaned children who aren’t allowed to play & whose schedule is rigidly enforced by their teacher. Hoping they’ll only be there for the night, continued storms & Glynnis’ health prevent them from leaving. But with warnings to stay in her room at night & the feeling she’s constantly being watched, Fiona tries to unearth the secrets of the castle before it’s too late.
I loved this story! Fiona was such an intelligent, compassionate, & relatable character. I enjoyed trying to decipher the mystery right along with her & admired her bravery in such a creepy, fear-inducing setting. I especially enjoyed her relationship with Nicholas & the way they worked together to uncover the castle’s secrets. I don’t want to say too much because half the fun is trying to figure out what’s going on.
The atmospheric gothic setting is absolutely perfect & evokes those feelings of suspense & dread, while the author’s characteristic gentle humor & witty banter add lightness to the otherwise spooky story.
Highly recommend to no-spice gothic romance fans! I received an advanced copy with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are my own & voluntarily provided.

The Secrets of Castle Negru — K. Lyn Smith ⭐⭐⭐⭐
"Atmospheric" and "gothic" are among the surest green flags in my reading life, and K. Lyn Smith delivers both in abundance. A castle of black stone in the Carpathian mountains, a stranded heroine, children who move with uncanny precision and watch with eyes too empty for their age — she had me from the opening pages.
I had already encountered Smith's work in the Hearts in Bloom anthology, where her contribution was among the standouts. That the author of warm Regency romance can turn her hand to Victorian gothic with such assurance is a considerable achievement. The genre influences — Wilkie Collins, sensation fiction, Stoker's Transylvania — are worn lightly and confidently.
Fiona Foster is an excellent gothic heroine: competent, sceptical, and not easily frightened — which makes the moments when she is frightened all the more effective. Nicholas, the too-educated, too-watchful handyman, is a romantic lead perfectly calibrated to the register. And the atmosphere is sustained throughout with real craft — the castle's strangeness never tips into the grotesque, and the mystery resolves satisfyingly.
A thoroughly accomplished piece of Victorian gothic romance. Highly recommended.

SECRETS OF CASTLE NEGRU instantly caught my heart with its gothic atmosphere and secrets—I was rooting for Fiona from page one!
Genre: Mystery, Historical Fiction, Romance, Sweet Romance, Proper Romance, Historical Romance
Spice Level: Kissing
There is something about a spooky castle, haunted by tales from the neighbors that is a magnet for me. Maybe this stems from reading Jane Eyre as a child.
This book, like Jane Eyre, holds the secrets of women and controlling men—and not everything is as one might suppose. To me, gothic romance can be either the Byronic hero who needs the innocent woman to save him OR a setting that emphasizes how women are mistreated in society. Okay, I guess it can have both of those scenarios too.
One of the reasons I loved this book was because of the women and the challenges they face. Fiona, who is intelligent and perceptive, her maid who is ailing, the poor wife who is suppressed. And the men? Such problems!
This is why the troubled handyman is such a gem! Sure, he's dark and brooding, but you have to look into his heart to see the real man behind the persona.
And then there's all those kids, who do not act like children normally do. (Be assured, no great harm comes to the kids in the long run if something like that bothers you—I was slightly worried except for the fact that I've learned to trust this author.) BUT solving the mystery is central to the plot and the building romance.
It's a book of trust and truth and pulling back the layers to find what's hidden beneath.
My only complaint is that I could have used more! I loved it that much.
This book is perfect for historical romance, historical mystery, and gothic lovers. Does it edge on horror? Not really in my opinion because it doesn't go that far, which keeps the sweet readers' expectations.
Loved it!
Go read it! Do not stop to collect $200, just go grab it. :D
Happy (sleuthing) reading!

“Fiona Foster had read enough sensational novels to know that a heroine’s carriage was never permitted to arrive safely at its destination.”
Gothic is not my usual genre at all, but Secrets of Castle Negru had my attention from beginning to end! It’s twisty, suspenseful, eerie, and slightly creepy in a Nancy Drew-like way – nothing truly scary or super dark where things are explained in the end. The opening caught my attention and watching the mystery unfold piece by piece kept it! I enjoyed Fiona and Nicholas, their dynamic, and how they came to help each other. There is some humor scattered throughout the story, but in general, the story has a darker feel per the gothic genre. The author’s historical notes at the end are worth reading, too. Overall, this is a well-written and entertaining story (perfect for October!) that kept me up way too late!
Most of the book takes place over the course of a week or so which means the romance happens quickly. I really wanted more relationship development between Fiona and Nicholas before the last third of the book. Also, I felt like there were a few plot holes where I wanted more details, explanations, or connections. It does fit the whole vibe of the story with its eerie mystery, but I would have appreciated a few more details. This didn’t take me out of the story at all!
This is a stand-alone companion novel for the completed Love’s Journey series. I’ve read and highly recommend that series, too!
I received an advanced digital copy of this book from the author and was under no obligation to post a review, positive or otherwise.
Possible mild spoilers in the content heads up...
Content: no-spice/kisses-only romance; clean language; faith content with some Bible verses quoted by a character; a few perilous situations; on-page, not graphic death; manipulation/abuse (not graphic)

When an accident strands Fiona and her injured companion at a castle in Transylvania of which the villagers tell dark rumours, she's thrust into a world of riddles and unknowns. Why do the orphans being brought up there behave like automatons? What secrets is the reclusive doctor hiding? And who is the mysterious handyman who dresses like a working man but speaks like a gentleman? With her companion too injured to help or leave even if the bridge were mended, Fiona has no one she knows she can trust, but something draws her to the handyman. But darker things are underway in the castle than she dreams of. Can she uncover the truth before she and her companion fall victim? And can there possibly be any future with the man she increasingly fears she's fallen in love with?
A great read that in some ways is a bit dark but still manages to be full of light and hope. Poor Fiona has a hard time of it, but Nicholas is a great character if he can only learn the right lesson from his father's history. The mystery side of things kept me guessing in the best of ways, and the romance was very satisfying. I loved the idea of hope through darkness, and even if the things planned were truly horrible, the horror was much reduced by them never taking place. The groundskeeper made for an intriguing side character and unexpected support, while the doctor made a good villain - a man with an unhealthy obsession and no interest in the cares and interests of others, or even, really, their lives. All in all, I enjoyed the atmosphere more than I'd expect of such a potentially dark story, appreciated the characters, and found the ending very satisfying. Recommended.

When Fiona Foster, a widow and nurse, becomes stranded in the Carpathian Mountains after a storm, she has little choice but to seek shelter at Castle Negru. What should be a brief stay quickly becomes something far more unsettling when she discovers that the castle is home to an orphanage where the children behave strangely, the charming physician seems determined to reassure her that everything is perfectly normal, and the mysterious handyman Nicholas appears to be hiding secrets of his own.
I really enjoyed the gothic atmosphere of the story. Castle Negru is an intriguing setting, with its hidden passages and increasingly unsettling secrets creating a wonderful sense of unease. The behaviour of the children was particularly creepy, and I liked the way the mystery gradually unfolded, leaving Fiona and the reader questioning who could be trusted.
Fiona was a strong and capable heroine, and I liked her determination to uncover what was really happening rather than simply accepting the explanations given to her. Her relationship with Nicholas was initially one where they were wary of each other and had their own reasons for keeping secrets. The combination of mystery and romance kept me interested throughout. At times, I would have liked a little more depth to some of the characters and for certain aspects of the mystery to be explored further. The story also moved quite quickly in places, particularly towards the conclusion. Nevertheless, the atmospheric setting and intriguing secrets made this an enjoyable read.

I grew up reading gothic novels about unsuspecting but brave heroines, brooding heroes and dark, dank castles full of secrets. The Secrets of Castle Negru took me back to those books, and it was an amazing continuation of the tradition. Fiona Foster (whom you might remember from K. Lynn Smith’s Light of a Nile Moon) and her companion are stranded at a mysterious castle after a carriage accident. The castle is being used as an orphanage, but something appears off. The children are too well-behaved. The owner is keeping secrets, and creepy music fills the castle day and night.
Then there’s Nicholas, the handyman who’s now at all what he seems. He knows suspects there’s something sinister going on at the castle too and grudgingly offers to help Fiona. But can she trust him when he seems to be hiding secrets of his own? When she starts sleepwalking, and her companion begins having delusions and hallucinations, Fiona realizes she has to solve the secrets of Castle Negru if she hopes to survive.
I loved this book so much. The characters are unique and fascinating. The story is a nail-biter from start to finish. I love Fiona and Nicholas. They’re a perfect couple. And, as usual, Ms. Smith’s attention to detail and descriptions take you completely into the story. This book was so good, I read it in one sitting. I hope we can count on more stories of this kind from this amazing author.
I received an advance copy of this book and am enthusiastically leaving this 5-star review.

Review of advance copy
The novel's opening line, "Fiona Foster had read enough sensational novels to know that a heroine’s carriage was never permitted to arrive safely at its destination" had me wondering if the author had read any of Ann Radcliffe's works. This is confirmed, as "The Mysteries of Udolpho is soon mentioned. I enjoyed that novel and a couple of Radcliffe's other works. "Udolpho" is atmospheric, sinister, and over the top; it also incredibly long.
"Secrets of Castle Negru" is a true gothic romance in the best way. A crumbling castle in Transylvania is a properly eerie setting for the deeds of characters with evil intentions. And what does any self-respecting gothic heroine do when faced with unusual happenings and suspicious individuals? Why, she doggedly pursues the truth of course, regardless of any danger. While there are no giant falling helmets à la "The Castle of Otranto" (ridiculous but one way to dispatch a character), there are plenty of gothic elements to satisfy readers of the genre. The author takes one particular theme -no spoilers- and elevates it to a frightening level.
K. Lyn Smith's lighthearted style is generally absent here, yet she strikes the perfect balance between sweet romance and villainous activity. This engaging read stands alone from her other Love's Journey tales, although Fiona Foster appears in "Light of a Nile Moon".

Though not my favorite genre, I really enjoyed this gothic romance. There is an eerie and haunting note to the writing, and an ominous feeling of something dreadful about to happen, particularly in the first half. Despite being a novella, the story is well developed, as is the explanation for it all… But I’d better not say anything more there, or I’ll spoil it.
I should note that the focus is primarily placed on developing the plot, rather than the romance. As such, the romance itself feels perhaps a bit underdeveloped, with insufficient interactions to back up the feelings… And yet, somehow it fit with the gothic tone of the book, as did the slightly cheesy ending. It all felt purposeful to the story being told, and didn’t bother me at all.
Definitely recommended to fans of gothic romance.
Content:
There is no foul language or sex, and the violence is minimal. The romance is limited to lightly descriptive kisses. There are quite a few scripture references (mostly quoted by one particular character), but there isn’t really a message of faith or God. There are some creepy aspects to it, but nothing demonic.

I really enjoyed the mystery in this book, especially because I couldn't figure out where the story was going. The plot twist at the end caught me completely off guard. It was totally unexpected, and I appreciated that the story kept me guessing until the end.
I did feel like I didn't get to know the characters as well as I would have liked. Fiona was a very brave heroine, and her courage especially showed through in the way she cared for the children despite everything strange and frightening happening around her. The techniques used by Dr. Lowell were genuinely disturbing, and knowing that some aspects were based on real-life events made them even more unsettling.
I liked Nicholas and his chemistry with Fiona. He was masculine, caring, humble, and determined to uncover the truth about his lineage, especially when it came to his mother and the circumstances surrounding his birth and whether he was truly the Duke of Avenmore. I enjoyed watching his search for answers unfold alongside Fiona's growing suspicions about what was happening at the castle.
Overall, this was an intriguing historical mystery with an unexpected twist, unsettling moments, and a romance I enjoyed.

There is an almost immediate sense of unease when Fiona and Glynnis first enter Castle Negru. And that nagging feeling only grows as Fiona notices more about the place and its inhabitants — no toys allowed, the children speak and act in unison, and must adhere to a strict routine.
But because the children seem well cared for (no visible injuries, not starving, etc.), it’s easy to believe the Castle is merely an orphanage with a few unconventional practices.
However, a single line halfway through the story changed everything. Several details slowly clicked into place, and the conclusions were chilling.
The villain might just be the creepiest one I’ve ever read about 🫣
Nicholas and Fiona’s sweet romance kept the story from becoming too heavy. I’m so glad they were able to turn Castle Negru into a place of hope and love.

Nicholas and Fiona’s sweet romance kept the story from becoming too heavy. I’m so glad they were able to turn Castle Negru into a place of hope and love.

"Secrets of Castle Negru" has all the elements of a classic gothic romance. A storm in the Carpathian Mountains leaves a young widow and her companion to seek refuge at a castle the locals believe is cursed. Fiona Foster is a modern woman, not prone to believe superstitions, but she soon realizes something really is wrong at the castle. Rounding out the cast are an unusual doctor, a creepy teacher, a small group of orphans behaving oddly, and a handsome man-of-all-work who doesn't seem to know his place.
I really can't say too much without risking giving something away. There were several points in the book that I was really worried for Fiona and her companion, and in a genre that thrives on happy endings, that's really something.
I found this short novel very suspenseful. As I read, I couldn't wait to see what happened next. If you like the old Universal horror films or historical romance with a dash of mystery, this book is for you.
I received a complimentary electronic copy of the novel in advance of publication; all opinions expressed here are my own.

Now something Gothic from one of my favorite authors.
I so appreciate Ms. Smith's stories as well as her ability to tell them. I have read all of her books. With this book, she has supplied drawings to help the reader visualize the various scenes presented. I wish more authors would do this.
While Gothic is not my typical choice of reading material, this was told in such a way that was entertaining. Having experienced hypnosis myself, the hypnotist cannot override one's sense of self-preservation. She got it right where suggestions can be accepted from repetition and for associated with positive activities for the good of the client. There are always bad actors in the client/therapist world and some encourage behavior to influence a client to the therapist's benefit. (e.g. "further appointments are necessary") emphasized during a session. This is not common, but can happen.

This book kept me in an almost constant state of goose bumps! I confess that I wasn’t at all sure I even LIKED it at times, because the story is so dark and terrifying. But the wonderful characters of Fiona and Nicholas wouldn’t let me turn away. Gothic, yes, but also…a romance- so I continued reading in the hopes of a kiss and a happy ending. This tale had so many twists and turns! But the history and medical research and K. Lyn Smith’s talent for weaving characters you cannot help loving all combined for an unusual book that I will recommend as a solid five star read. I received an ARC from the author and was not required to post a review.

Gothic is not a genre that appeals much to me. The only reason that I gave this book a chance is, because it is written by K Lyn Smith. And I am glad I did so, because the author has balanced both, the Gothic and the romantic aspects beautifully! The setting and the plot are both eerily haunting, but we do get a reprieve from that by the budding romance between the main characters. I loved the book, and would definitely recommend it!

What an intriguing Victorian Gothic Romance. "A Gothic heroine's carriage is never permitted to arrive safely." From the very beginning this story grabs your attention. then you must hold on for a wild ride. A Transylvanian castle, terrible storm, broken carriage and haunting music all set the scene for a dramatic, spellbound, eerie and romantic tale. I am typically not a gothic/haunted reader but I have read many of this authors books and loved them. I'm so glad I picked this one up. It gave me chills and swoons at the same time.

Secrets of Castle Begins is Book 2.5 in Loves Journey by K Lynn Smith. The story is set in Transylvania in 1847. The setting is A broken carriage, A storm, A superstitious driver who dumped them with a wasted out bridge. Spooky! Fiona is brave as she goes about trying to make sense of the goings on in the castle. I thought this story was excellent and the ending fantastic. . I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.

What an awesome; spooky and totally gothic novel!
The author grabbed me from the first sentence and held me gripped throughout the story. I couldn’t stop reading!
The hero and heroine were both looking for something but discovered something new that makes them stronger.
If you love gothic tales with a big mystery and romance wrapped up in a spooky tale this is a must read!

When a carriage breaks down by a forbidding castle, the hapless heroine finds herself trapped in a makeshift orphanage where children act like automatons, the handsome handyman has secrets to keep, and manic music weaves a spell of mystery. This delightfully eerie book kept me reading long after bedtime, and I finished the story in one sitting. I loved how K. Lyn Smith used historical oddities of the time to create a suspenseful and believable plot. Recommended.

This was an enjoyable story with a bit of romance, intrigue and mystery. Fiona’s coach breaks down near a gothic looking castle and she feels something is wrong as soon as she enters it. The doctor and teacher are unusual as are the children in their care. The man of all work is also hiding something. Eventually, Fiona works with. I holds to solve what is going on at the castle but not before attempts are made on their lives.

A charming romance mix of Gothic castle intrigue and melodrama. Implausible perhaps, but very likeable !
I do like a capable leading lady and Fiona fits the bill nicely.
A few twists along the way kept me turning the pages.
An enjoyable, well written adventure.

I loved the more gothic feel of this book. I felt the romance wasn’t the focus as much as the mystery, which I loved. The twist at the end was good. I really enjoy all the books I’ve read from this author and will continue to choose her books. Very fun, quick, read.

What an entrancing gothic mystery! I adored it. The story moves fast and the evil running underneath in the name of science swiftly guides the reader to the next page. Fiona is a lively character who is strength personified. Nicholas is a seeker. He searches for proof even while he questions how that proof will impact his life. The twists and turns kept my interest until the last page.

I enjoyed this short gothic tale! It had Frankenstein vibes with a sweet romance twist! The romance was clean and tasteful, and the character growth helped to carry the solving of the mystery. I loved the ending, where all of the loose ends were neatly tied! I received an ARC copy and this is my review.

Fabulous!
Even though you knew where this was most likely headed it was still great fun getting there. The characters were believable, nothing was so bizarre as to be ridiculous, and the atmosphere was gothic without being over the top. And even when you thought it was done, maybe not.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. This is a good book, and relatively quick read, but it wasn't as gothic as I like. Also, the romance was pretty subtle. However, the H and h were easy to like, the story kept my interest, and the ending was sweet.

Gothic for sure!
This was a creepy story in parts, and definitely one I’m glad I read during the day. It’s very gothic, and was well written. I’m glad Fiona got a story!
