2016 Global Ebook Award Winner - For Chicago police detective Tony Alfano, it was not like most five bombings throughout the Loop, two hundred pounds of missing dynamite, and one dead Serbian in an alley off Washington Street. Is it the Outfit, the Mob, Bolsheviks, or the unions? In the dark speakeasies and nightclubs of Chicago’s underworld, Alfano treads the sharp edge of sanity and delusion, praying that it’s just mob vengeance and not typical Chicago politics.
In Depression racked Chicago, three people crash into each other, each hoping for vengeance, redemption, and salvation. Alfano thought he’d seen it all in his twenty years on the force, but this is brutally and explosively different. Can he stop the killer or will the killer get to him first?
. . . and to add pressure, the city’s corrupt mayor demands that Alfano catch the killer before the gates to the Century of Progress World’s Fair and Chicago are opened to America and the world.

3.5 stars. This was good! The procedure side of this was pretty enjoyable but the mystery itself was pretty unlikely in its denouement, or I may have given it 4 stars. This was a short book but would have benefitted from having more character depth and being a bit longer.
Tony Alfano has a job to do, find out who is setting the bombs in Chicago. Someone is out for revenge and not leaving any witnesses. Det Alfano starts with a scrap of info and builds from there. An interesting read in the 1930s with the depression on and corruption in all parts of the city government who can you trust?
Having been raised near the Chicago area i really enjoyed all the refers to buildings, street names, even the newspaper & radio stations that I know. The characters were well developed & the story kept me interested throughout. I do have a tendency to figure out the story well before the ending, which I did, but I still enjoyed it.
Wow! This was real cliff hanger. It kept me awake all night. Thank goodness I had today off. I am an aspiring writer who has yet to get past BIC (butt in chair) Your characters were distinctive and stayed in their roles. The vocabulary was appropriate for the period. I know this because my second hubby was a Kansas City bootlegger not in with the mob.
Good action. You can follow the clues and guess with the detective. I grew up near Chicago and was a very good representation of the city at that time. Still a bit of surprise right up to the last pages
Great story about a paid demolition expert hit man hired by someone mysterious, to blow up various buildings in Chicago, killing many people. A clever detective methodically traces all the clues and the finale is a surprise.
I really enjoyed this book and would definitely read this author again. It's set during Chicago right before the world's fair. A terrorist bomber with no clear agenda. I was surprised too!
Did you realize that you said that they were headed North to Elmhust, IL now I think you ment North to Evanston. Oops. But being from Chicago it's one this one time that I actually thing I caught a Oops. Interesting short read though.
This thriller set in 1930's Chicago kept my interest and was well worth the read. The characters were right for the time. Tony Alfano will be a detective that I will look forward to following. The story is well developed and enjoyable.
Absolutely stupid and illogical. The writing was ok and acceptable until later in the book. I gave it two stars just because I finished it. Don’t waste your time on this stinker.
