Broken: The sequel to The Preacher's Son

Rate this book
Maxine James has been broken.

When she was just thirteen, an act of unspeakable violence ended the innocence of her childhood. She was abducted and violated on her way home from school.

Now twenty-six, the terror of her teen years is never far from her mind. She fears she won't be able to ovefrcome her past to enjoy a normal, healthy relationship with a man.

She lives with her sister, Nadine, and her husband, Eric, and even though they are sympathetic to her trauma, home life is a challenge. When she catches them in the throes of passion, something changes. Despite the pain of the opposition they've faced as an interracial couple, the two have found happiness. Max realizes that it's time to stop living in fear and regret. Encouraged by Nadine, Max returns to therapy.

Nadines's brother in law, Matthew has never been quiet about his feelings regarding his brother Eric's marriage. He has also never been quiet about his dislike of Max, a woman he feels is too outspoken for her own good...and Max has never hesitated to call him out on his racism.

Neither of them want to admit the undeniable attraction which is at the root of their animosity, but their siblings know what's really the cause of all that tension. Max and Matthew are persuaded to go on a "pretend" date and the date turns out to be anything but pretend.

**Review contains minor spoilers**

I'm sorry but Maxine has to be one of the most annoying characters ever. I understand that she suffered a trauma but that is not a free pass to be selfish. Everything was about her. Even her desire to be in a relationship with Matthew revolved around her wanting to feel whole and loved and to have a relationship with a man like what her sister, Nadine, had with her husband. Never once did she say anything about what she wanted to offer Matthew and she never offered him anything except her body (as if a healthy relationship/marriage is just built around sex). It was almost as if he was some accessory designed just to make her feel good about herself instead of a human being with his own wants, needs, and desires. And the whole story line with Maxine spying on her sister and brother in law having sex was disturbing. Maybe it would not have been so bad if she did it and moved on (though it still wouldn't have been ok) but the fact that she kept flashing back on it, even while Matthew was trying to be intimate with her, did not sit well with me. There is also a part in the book where she is forced to perform a sex act on Matthew and she reveals in a therapy session that she is upset because he wasn't aroused and believes it is because she can't satisfy him "like a woman should". I'm sorry but now you are measuring whether he wants you by whether he responds to a forced sex act? I get it, she was raped at 13 and is inexperienced around men but some of this stuff was ridiculous.

There were so many other things I didn't like about this story. I can't count the number of times I rolled my eyes or felt tempted to throw this book across the room. I like the author. I like what she tries to do with her stories but just like with The Preacher's Son, it was the story line and the overuse of racial stereotypes that prevented me from being able to give this book a higher rating.

I wanted to like it

I gave this story only two stars because it was almost hard to finish. There were so many little details that were made that could have been fixed with a good editor that it took away so much from the story. The characters are in the Preacher's Son so their relationship began to develop there. But I felt like screaming at times because the dialogue was just bad along with the shear number of times the words interracial relationships were used. I stopped counting at twelve .

I really wanted to like this book to continue the story from the Preacher's Son, but with this story being so disjointed and I just can't rate it any higher. I am glad that the author did not put the extra unnecessary characters with storylines like in the first story.

Broken

I have read all of B.D. Anderson's book and this is the best one so far. Once I started reading I could not put it down, I was rooting for Maxine and Matthew and could not wait to see how their story would unfold. This is amazing story and I love how B.D was able to take a sensitive topic and express through the character how something tragic can affect your life and how you view things. At the same time she was able to let us know not to let fear hinder us and we must trust God to see us through. Great story.

Love the sequel

I truly enjoyed the sequel and Matthew and Maxine's story. It was very intense and had me literally on the edge of my seat. Even though the author is a minister, her books are written in such a way that sex is exciting and a part of each couples' life.

Maxine eventually got her HEA after all those struggles and it's a beautiful thing.

This is a story of hope, of challenges, of family, of love, pain, and success. Most of all it is about a woman who was thirteen stuck in a twenty-six-year-old woman. You see Maxine James had been kidnapped and violated repeatedly

Now after thirteen years, he is being released. In a backhanded deal with the warden, he is getting out just when things were beginning to look up for Max.

Yes, Max, Nadine, and Eric all live together and she has only had a few episodes with Eric that reminded her of the event that changed her. So, they are calling that a win after a year of living together. She has been seeing Dr. Nelson again after the first time an episode happened around, Eric.

It was the only way Nadine would agree to stay there with her twin girls and Eric. She sees her doctor twice a month. She encourages her to date and talks to men. Max finds that really hard to do. To help her out Eric strong arms Matt his brother. Even though the two protests loud and proud that they do not like one another everyone else can see the sexual tension and attraction.

You see Matthew is if you ask Max, a racist. But she doesn’t know deep down he really is crushing on her as she is on him. Matt calls her a man hater. They equal each other out. Max saved Matt’s bacon in a business deal that could have gone all kinds of bad. If she really hated him that would have been the perfect time to let him crash and burn but she didn’t.

With those thousands of dollars save and his business too he owned her and he knew it too. So, even though he fought Eric he knew he would come over for dinner to help Max with her inclusion dinner to be around guys. Plus, he didn’t want to be another guy.

Anyway, as dinner is underway Eric ask Matt how his date the other night had gone. Matt just glares at Eric. Then ask Max if she has a boyfriend. She said she didn’t and that she hasn’t dated. Matt asks how long and she responds ever. He is shocked.

So, Eric says basically, why don’t you take her out, Matt? They are like, NO! Then Eric says something like, not for real since you both hate each other but for pretending. You know Matt since she saved your butt and all. You do owe her. The end up agreeing to go to dinner and a movie.

This is a two-part book that is an oh so engulfing book you don’t want to put it down. Yes, it is faith based, yet, very real with, real couples talking and having sex, foreplay, and arguments. There is praying and scripture and humor and tears. You will feel what this couple feels as they walk through this journey sometimes alone of their choosing and sometimes together.

Where the first book deals with the interracial braking of the ice and the acceptance from family, friends, and community. This book deals with a personal journey they must walk in order to find themselves dealing with issues they were taught by family and then overcoming physical hurts in order to become a couple. But if you truly love someone you have to be able to walk the walk with them and believe that you have a power greater than yourself to guide you. They chose God as their guide. I give this: 5++++ stars. I purchased this book on Amazon because I just had to know what happened. Follow us at www.1rad-readerreviews.com.

Very Good

This is the second book I have read by this author, really enjoyed it. This book touch on racism, and child molestation. Maxine had been sexually assaulted at 13, she had never had a real relationship because of that. Matthew could not get Max off of his mind. ( They crossed paths in Book 1 The Preacher's Son) Matthew felt that he had to fight his feelings because of the way he reacted to cousin Jeremy's marriage to a African-American woman, and his brother's marriage to an African-American. He didn't realize that the heart wants what the heart wants and God do not look at color, God look at the heart. This book also has a bit of mystery and suspense. I loved the way Matthew helped Max would through her PTSD.

I really enjoyed this book. It held my attention. I connected with the characters. I experienced several emotions throughout the book. I liked the struggles of the characters and thought it quite pertinent. This book had me reflecting on past experiences and my ability to be compassionate to others, because so often, we aren't aware of the background of others. The book is written in several POVs, but it isn't confusing to read.

There were typos where letters were left off and the spell check didn't catch it because the error formed a word; ex: "he" should have been "her"

There are graphic scenes and possible triggers. Rape and racism are topics in this book.

Good read

This was a really good book and the 2nd I have read by this author and it won't be my last. I hope there is a 2nd story in the works for Max and Matt. I would love see how she is adjusting to life as a married woman and I want to see if Matt won his election bid. I recommend this book and I hope there is more of Max and Matt to come.

Good

Enjoyed the sequel. It did focus on Max and Matthew. The struggle with Eric and Nadine having to raise the twins and money struggles.
She treated the struggle Maxine and those who loved her had to go thru and that healing is an ongoing process.

Could've Been

This could've been a truly awesome book if not for it seemed like two different people wrote it. One minute the twins were babies and then a year old. The problem was who burps 1 year olds?? And then Matt has 3 brother's but in one part they make Nathan his cousin. Then no mention of him at all when Matt was shot. It's stuff like this that took away from the book

I was truly dissapointed. I was hoping to meet a strong woman based on the previous books for heroine character despite what she's been through in the past. Yet, I met this annoying woman who kept screwing things up with her constant quarrel. I lost my interest completely.

Just okay

This was a long novel. At times it felt redundant, with the H constantly denying his feelings for the heroine. This book was filled with so much angst I was just glad to be done with it.
