As I enter the kitchen diner, I hear raised voices. David and Jackie bickering again. They’re like an old married couple. I don’t feel any jealousy. It’s good that she has a friend. It’s part of her new outlook on life. She confesses to still feeling numb most of the time, but she’s trying her hardest to change. After admitting that she loved me, she’d sat me down and explained what “love” meant to a psychopath. She now thinks of me as an extension of herself. Meaning that the thing that drives her most, her instinct for self-preservation, encompasses me as well.
˃˃˃ CLARA IS STILL LEARNING THE ROPES Once again, she has to redefine herself. Her mission is to target Alicia Hayes, the DDA’s rebellious daughter. She’s excited by the prospect, but things aren’t exactly as they appear. If she wants to survive, she’ll need to step up her game, and experience what it’s like to be a mark.“About that,” says Jackie. “If this goes ahead, your appearance has to change. This vibe you have going on, it’s too distinctive for the job. I suggest something more toned down. I’m not talking Mary Poppins. I was thinking we might mirror Alicia. People like people like themselves. She’s into her brands. Tattoos, as well. Though I think that’s mostly to piss off her father. A bit of a rebel by all accounts. Drinks too much, takes drugs. You might have to do the same. It’s not ideal, but blending in is important.”
