Elowen is running out of time. Her father is dying, her court is circling, and a secret buried in Thornhaven's foundation will destroy everything the moment she's too weak to hold it. She has no room for distractions — especially not the human hunter she keeps finding in the forest.
Levin doesn't trust the fae. He has good reason. He built his whole life on that reason: on the clean certainty of what they are, and on staying away.
He doesn't know what she is.
Not yet.
By the time he does, the pull between them has already decided for both of them. What exists between a fae queen and a human man who was never supposed to exist in her world has a name in Thornhaven. An ancient one.
And under the law, it carries a sentence.
A queen who bonds with a human doesn't lose her throne.
She loses her life.

Marie Nightwell writes dark romance for readers who want their love stories dangerous, complicated, and a little obsessive. Her debut series, Courts of Chaos, opens with the Thornhaven Trilogy — a world where fae and humans don't belong together, and fate doesn't care. Forbidden bonds, real hatred, power dynamics, and a slow-burn that earns every moment. She writes across dark romance subgenres: fae, paranormal, vampire, werewolf, and wherever the dark leads next.
This is a slow-burn, forbidden love fae royalty romantasy with a clear division of faes and humans. Who knew a chance meeting could change your life? Levin- He's a human on a simple farm living a simple life. Hunting and trapping daily in the woods that border his family's land. The woods are familiar -- like the back of his hand, he knows the terrain, the sounds, the serenity. Elowen- she's learning to serve the fae in Thornhaven, as her father's sickness slowly steals his life. She meets with the council signs documents and holds herself with a stillness and decorum of her station. She sits at her father's bedside, seeing him losing parts of himself that are familiar. She isn't ready for the crown-- it's too much. She needs to breathe, she needs to be able to take a full breath which she hasn't done since more and more of her father's duties fell to her. She exits through the garden, hanging for the forest. Escaping into the woods. She can breathe and finally exhale completely.

The Divide had a lot of elements I usually love—dark fae politics, high stakes, and a true forbidden romance between Elowen and Levin. The premise where a fae queen bonding with a human literally costs her life sets up an awesome, high-tension conflict right from the start, and the dark atmosphere of Thornhaven was fun to sink into.
That being said, it landed right in the middle for me. While I liked the dynamic between the leads, the middle of the book slowed down quite a bit, and some of the political intrigue took a backseat. I wanted a little more dynamic tension given how high the stakes were supposed to be, but a lot of the plot progression felt a bit dragged out before picking back up for the ending.
If you love slow-burn dark fae romance with dual POVs and plenty of court drama, it’s definitely a decent start to a trilogy with a lot of potential, even if it didn't completely blow me away. A solid 3 stars for me!
I thought this was a really great story and I loved the storyline. Elowen needed to escape life for just a little bit. An ailing father and the crown weighing heavy her on her. She wasn’t ready to take that position. So she heads into the woods to clear her head and spend some time alone. It’s there that she encounters Levin. Her being a Fae and him human, they don’t take too well to one another. But the nut time she spends with him, they both start to fall for one another. But in her kingdom, that’s instant death. The tension that this caused had me glued to my chair. I loved the world building and the politics. I loved these two and what they found in one another. It was a cherry captivating story.,

I loved this book. A good slow burn with forbidden love. The FMC’s Father is dying and she isn’t ready to inherit the crown and take on all the responsibilities. Looking to escape to the woods, a chance encounter changes everything. A handsome distraction she doesn’t have time for. The longing. The growth. The complexity. I cannot wait for the second one.
