J.A. Williams grew up in a family of female rebels, learning early what happens when women enter arenas where they are not welcome. That knowledge carried her through decades of work in law in the top levels of finance in The City of London, alongside life as a military spouse during times of war and global upheaval.
Then came the moment.
The one where she stopped asking for permission.
The one where she said F*** it.
She pivoted, walking away from a career that no longer served her to become an author, where genre conventions told her to pick a lane.
She flat out refused.
She couldn’t find the book she wanted on any shelf. So she wrote it.
Fantasy that isn’t decorative. Politics which are intimate yet costly. Romance that’s sensual. And stories that refuse to flinch. Threads of Fate is the result.
Five books. The first of many.
A dark fantasy universe where romance drives stories that stay with you long after the last page…
Written for readers who are tired of choosing between depth and desire – who have been waiting for someone else to refuse to compromise.
She lives in England with her husband, their four boys, along with one extremely opinionated French Bulldog named Coco. Her spare time is spent plotting the next uprising between school runs, over strongly brewed tea.
Thank goodness I have the arc for book 1 because DAMN this novella was freaking amazing. What an emotional punch to the gut. I’m so excited to see where this series takes us.
I finished this in a night. A really great novela that's set up perfectly for the main book. The auther has packed this book with getting to know each character, the magic and world building.
I loved that it was duel POV so it give a good insight in to both their backgrounds before they come together in the next book.
It actually really drew on my heart strings from each pov. The fmc and her mam and the MMCs search of approval from his dad.
The tattoo/ink/ magic was such a good concept as well. Very unique.
So happy to find a new author and fantasy world that u know im going to love
This was excellent! I’m an Arc reader getting ready to start Spark of the Rebellion and I chose to read the prequel before getting started and it did not disappoint!
This novella captures two individuals at that transition time between childhood and adulthood. Told in a dual POV, you follow the story of Evander Valcour and Aria Fenwyck.
Evander’s biggest wish is to gain his father’s approval. When discovered that he has magic, Evander must decide if he’s willing to become part of the military elite through an ink rite, or suffer his father’s disappointment. Aria is suddenly realizing she has feelings for her best friend. After a devastating loss, her magic appears. In a kingdom that celebrates the magic of men, magic in women is a death sentence. Aria must decide if she’s willing to put her family and the budding relationship with her friend at risk…should she be found out…it means death.
This was a great intro into Spark of the Rebellion! It’s only 112 pages, but there’s so much there! Definitely worth the read!
Review of advance copy received from Author. My opinions are my own. 🌶️ This was perfection. 105 pages and I could not eat it up fast enough. The characters are relatable and not overdone, the world building is intricate without being overwhelming, and I absolutely have to know what happens next.
Bound By Smoke & Ink by JA Williams is the prequel novella to A Spark of Rebellion in the Threads of Fate series. I was about 10% in to A Spark of Rebellion before I realized there was a novella, so I went and read it quickly, and I do believe it helps with the worldbuilding.
It tells the story of Evander, the son of a powerful man and how he becomes Commander of the military elite. It also tells the story of Aria, and how her magic came into being, as well her brother’s, and the love developing between her and Asher.
This is a short and entertaining story, and I think it’s a good thing to read before A Spark of Rebellion. While I think I was reading along okay without it, it definitely filled in a lot of details, and things made a bit more sense.
Based on this novella and the amount of A Spark of Rebellion I’ve read, I would def recommend this series.
Obsessed. For a novella it sure delivers….all the things…emotion. tension. backstory. world intro. love. heartbreak. bravery. forbidden magic. All from 2 perspectives - MMC Evander & FMC Arianwen.
“It was not a vow. Nothing so dramatic as that. It was bread. On a rock. Under a willow tree. And it was the most fearless thing I’d ever seen.”
This novella is a must read. It contains so much in just 100ish pages. It quickly and fully immerses you into the world, feels like a whole story, yet leaves you wanting to immediately dive into The Spark of Rebellion for more. I’m LOVING this series already and having so much fun reading!
This prequel novella has me yearning for The Spark of Rebellion!! I loved everything about this prequel.
The introduction to the world and the magic system has massively piped my interest and I’m so intrigue to discover more! The differences in the treatment of males who possess magic and females who possess magic is a really unique concept and I’m desperate to find out why this is the case!
In only 105 pages, I have become completely invested in these characters, to the point where I’m already begging the author to not harm them 🤭 I feel so connected to these characters already and I’m so excited to learn more about them!
I also loved this authors writing style. The story flowed really well and the emotive language invoked so many feelings in such a short story!
This was such a great introduction to this world and these characters and it has left me begging to read The Spark of Rebellion ASAP!! It did exactly what it was set out to do 😍 I’m very excited for what’s to come!!
I just finished this novella, and already I feel like this series is going to be up there with my favourites 😍
This novella is part of the " Threads Of Fate " series. It is a free novella that you can get in a link on Jessica's page. I highly recommend you get this novella if you want to see what the series will be about.
Book One " The Spark Of Rebellion " will be out October of this year and I am dying to read it. If this is just the novella, I can't imagine what book one will be like!!
The writing was amazing, I loved the dual POV, We get to understand the story of our 2 MC's before we start book one. I love this as I feel we get more understanding of them and their back story.
The cover reveal for book one, " The Spark Of Rebellion," will be out this Wednesday, the 3rd of June, and I'm excited to be part of it 😍
Blurb -
Before the war begins… Before fate sets the collision in motion…
In the Empire of Eternal Dawn, magic is not a gift. It is leashed. Controlled. Claimed from the very first moment, it appears.
Two lives are about to change.
Aria Fenwyck becomes fluent in all the ways a body disappears. Smoke, gathering in her hands. Grief, teaching her what power costs.
Evander Valcour is taught how a weapon is forged. Ink, binding to his heartbeat. Oaths, carving silence into bone.
She has a secret glen. A sacred rock by a river. A love that chooses her…knowing exactly what it will cost.
He has a palace. A father who trades blood for power. A throne built on inherited cruelty and lies.
And one Empire – closing in on both.
They have not yet met. But the threads have already been drawn.
This is where it begins.
The choices. The losses.
The first fracture that cannot be undone.
A devastating prelude to The Spark of Rebellion – Book One of the Threads of Fate series.
The Spark is coming. Step into the universe before it ignites…
This is a prequel novella to The Spark of Rebellion which releases in October! Bound by Smoke & Ink is available now. It’s the backstories of Aria and Evander. They don’t know each other yet. Aria experiences trauma and ends up with a deadly secret. She goes through loss, a developing young love, and sacrifice. Evander also experiences changes that force him to grow up. He goes through painful transformation and we see the desire for his father’s approval. Sacrifices are also made here. Both lives are forever changed by things beyond their control. Both of them are forced to grow up. Both are forced to become people they didn’t choose to be. Both of their stories made me sad but I thoroughly enjoyed this and can’t wait to see what happens!
To find out what happens when their paths cross, preorder The Spark of Rebellion!
This was a fantastic introduction to the Threads of Fate series and I can't wait to read the rest!
The novella introduces us to key characters, establishes the magic system and the world in which the larger story will take place. I loved J.A. Williams' writing style, which was gorgeously descriptive and used figurative language, liberally, to bring the world an characters to light. The moments where we got really into the characters' minds felt almost like poetry, thanks to the formatting and succinct expression.
A really excellent introduction to this upcoming series and the author's style - I'm really looking forward to more.
This book is available to read FREE if you subscribe to J.A. Williams' newsletter. (Highly worth it!)
Bound by Smoke & Ink is a prequel novella to the Threads of Fate series that gave readers a glimpse into the magic system, societal rules/tension, and the paths of Aria and Evander.
I am very curious to see how Aria’s journey continues, given her situation and am really hoping that The Spark of Rebellion will pick up where the novella left off!
I also want to know what Bastian knows. He clearly knows something that Evander does not. He definitely gives big brother energy, despite being younger than Evander.
A great little introduction into the world I have yet to read in this series, the book is so easy to read it’s simple to get lost in a world that is building around you! The characters are great and I love a duel POV! Now onto the main event.. The Spark of Rebellion
This is a very intriguing story and a pretty good prequel novella for the series. I'm looking forward to reading the first book, I really want to know how this progresses and get a better picture of the world the author has created.
I'm not a huge fan of the writing to be honest, the similes/comparisons felt excessive and unnecessary at some points. The characters kept repeating things to the point I was like "ok I get, you've said this enough times". This surprised me especially cause it's such a short book. The characters also kept saying they could not or didn't want to 'name' what felt like quite a lot of things.
I will be reading the first book in the series cause I'm curious about the story itself but hopefully the writing grows on me as well.
So far, this novella has been a really great introduction into the world we are about to step into with the threads of fate series! The characters have all got their own storylines which I'm eager to see develop and it's definitely got me interested in finding out more! 👀
This Novella is a prequel to The Spark of Rebellion, book one in the Threads of Fate series.
We are introduced to 2 main characters of the series, Evander and Arianwen. Evander is the eldest of three siblings and whose dad is the general commander and King. He is desperate to do anything to please his father and during training is forced to show the strength of his magic.
Arianwen is one of four and the eldest daughter. Her parents have created a safe environment in their farmhouse but as more soldiers begin to sweep the village she knows the comfort will not last. After a family tragedy, Arianwen discovers not all as it appears.
I loved this short but detailed introduction into our key characters lives and their families. It's helped start shaping my thoughts and feelings of them and established the characters in my mind. I'm ready and excited for what comes next.
This book is just the prequel to a whole new, vast world! Book one Spark of the Rebellion is coming in October. This book was brilliant! It was the perfect entry to a whole new world! Gave you the perfect glimpses into this world giving you just the basics to understand what you were diving into! And of course will leave you wanting for more! SO MUCH MORE! I really enjoyed getting know some of the main characters in a dual POV. You get a really good feeling for how they will be in the main story!!
I picked up Bound by Smoke & Ink primarily as background reading before moving into my ARC of the first Threads of Fate book, expecting a quick origin story that would introduce me to the characters and world.
That is essentially what it is—but I was pleasantly surprised by how much emotional weight J.A. Williams managed to give such a short novella.
Rather than telling one continuous story, the novella moves through formative moments in the lives of its two central characters, alternating between them chapter by chapter. I really liked that structure. It allows us to watch both of them develop without spending so long with one perspective that the other disappears from the story.
The contrast between their upbringings was probably the element I found most interesting.
One grows up learning that her unusual abilities need to remain hidden. There is genuine love within her family, but survival comes with an understanding that being noticed can be dangerous.
Evander’s experience is almost the inverse. As heir to the Empire of Eternal Dawn, his abilities make him valuable—and that value becomes its own kind of trap. His upbringing revolves around expectation, endurance, service and becoming what the Empire requires of him.
There is something compelling about seeing two young people shaped by versions of the same question: what happens when your worth becomes tied to what other people believe your power is for?
Evander’s sections in particular become increasingly uncomfortable as the expectations placed upon him collide with his own identity. The introduction of the ink and the way duty, obedience and usefulness begin swallowing the boy underneath all of it created some of the novella’s strongest moments for me.
The other POV carries a different kind of tenderness, especially through her relationship with Asher.
Asher is just a beautiful soul. Their first-love dynamic is innocent and quietly romantic, and I loved the smaller acts of care between them—the sort of relationship built through someone noticing when you are struggling, sitting beside you, bringing food, telling stories and making your problems something you do not have to face alone.
It may not be the love story destined to carry forward forever—sorry, Asher—but that does not make those early feelings any less lovely. 💗
The prose was probably my favourite part of the novella. Williams uses some beautiful imagery around grief, pain, heat, smoke and transformation without making the writing feel unnecessarily dense. As an aphantasia reader, I especially appreciated that the descriptions gave me atmosphere and emotional understanding rather than relying solely on visual detail.
There are also some genuinely heart-tugging moments involving family, loss and sacrifice. Because we are seeing selected moments rather than following every stage of these characters’ lives, the story can move very quickly from something tender into something painful.
That format does mean this very much feels like an origin-story novella rather than a standalone fantasy. Personally, I think I benefited from reading it when I already had the main story waiting for me; it gave me exactly the kind of context that made me more interested in what happens next.
Short, emotional and beautifully written, Bound by Smoke & Ink gave me a strong introduction to the characters, the Empire and some of the forces that have shaped them.
Now I’m ready to see what all of that becomes in Threads of Fate.
Okay, this is exactly what a prequel novella should do. Give me just enough of the world to get me invested, make me care about the characters far too quickly, and then leave me needing the actual story immediately.
Bound by Smoke and Ink introduces us to Ari(anwen) and Evander before their paths collide, and I really enjoyed the dual POV. Their lives are completely different, but both are trapped by the same Empire and by what their magic means for them.
And this is probably what intrigued me the most: magic is treated completely differently depending on whether you are a man or a woman. Men with magic can be claimed and turned into weapons for the Empire, while for women, being discovered can mean death. That alone raised SO many questions, and I need answers.
I also loved that despite being such a short read, it didn’t feel like an information dump. We get family dynamics, grief, friendships, political tension, forbidden magic and the beginnings of a rebellion without being told absolutely everything. There are already little threads being placed everywhere, and you can tell they are going to matter later.
Arianwen’s story pulled me in emotionally, while Evander’s made me incredibly curious about the person he’s going to become. His need for his father’s approval, the pressure surrounding him and the way the Empire begins shaping him already give his character so much potential.
And Asher… 👀 I have questions. That’s all I’m saying.
The writing is immersive and atmospheric, and I loved the contrast between smoke and ink, two completely different manifestations of magic that already feel symbolic of the lives these characters are being forced into.
My only complaint? It’s a prequel, so just when I was properly invested… IT ENDED. 😂
Such a strong introduction to the Threads of Fate world. Now I need The Spark of Rebellion because you cannot introduce me to an Empire this messed up, hint at a rebellion, give me these characters and expect me to calmly walk away.
A hauntingly beautiful beginning to an unforgettable fantasy journey ✨🖤
Bound By Smoke & Ink is a powerful and emotional introduction to the Threads of Fate series. Even as a short prequel novella, it carries so much weight, atmosphere, and depth. It doesn’t just set up a story — it lays the foundation for the heartbreak, choices, and conflicts that are yet to come.
The world of the Empire of Eternal Dawn immediately captured my attention. The idea of magic being controlled, claimed, and treated as something to be feared rather than cherished creates such a dark and compelling backdrop. The themes of power, control, sacrifice, and destiny are woven beautifully throughout the story.
Aria Fenwyck’s journey was heartbreaking. Her connection to smoke and the way grief shapes her understanding of power made her story feel deeply emotional and human. Evander Valcour’s side of the story was equally fascinating, showing how someone can be shaped by a world built on cruelty, expectations, and impossible choices.
What stood out most was the writing. The prose is lyrical, atmospheric, and filled with emotion. Every page feels like it carries the weight of something bigger — a storm approaching, a fate already set in motion, and lives that are about to collide.
Although this is a prequel, it doesn’t feel like “just an introduction.” It feels like the first thread being pulled before everything unravels. It left me invested in the characters, curious about the world, and eager to see how these choices will shape the story ahead.
A beautifully written, haunting, and unforgettable beginning. If you love fantasy filled with magic, emotional depth, destiny, and characters carrying impossible burdens, this is a must-read. 🖤🔥
This short origin story is only 112 pages long, but opens up a world that seems so complex and full of secrets that it makes you want to read more and more.
As an origin story, the novella shows how the characters became who they are. How Evander became a soldier and how Arianwen survived the tragedies that came one after another for her and her family. Both were born with magic, but while one was celebrated for it, the other had to hide, because in that case, having magic equaled death.
I was drawn into the story little by little, getting more and more invested as I read, and now, after that ending, I can’t wait to pick up The Spark of Rebellion (Book 1 in the series).
For me, having a backstory is essential to connecting with the characters. It helps you see things from their perspective and makes you feel closer to them, giving you a better understanding of what made them who they are. This book gave me exactly that, and I really enjoyed it. The world was explained slowly throughout the story, easing you into it and showing how vastly different people’s experiences could be when faced with the exact same situation: having unexpected magic.
Reading this novella was an amazing way of getting to know the characters, the world, and the story behind what is to come in the next books, and I can’t wait to see what comes next!
If you are looking for a fantasy with political disputes, family ties, and a strong heroine, this novella will introduce you to the right series!

“Power lived in my hands. Power, the Empire deemed a sin.”
Some books ask for your attention.
Bound in Smoke and Ink quietly steals it.
J.A. Williams didn’t simply arrive, she kicked the doors off their hinges.
I was completely consumed by this novella. In so few pages, Williams accomplishes what many full length novels struggle to do. She made me care deeply about Aria and Evander almost instantly, weaving two lives destined to collide in a world where magic isn’t a gift it’s a sentence.
Her writing is immersive and utterly addictive. Every page carries the quiet weight of sacrifice, grief, and impossible choices. I loved the way she explored the cost of power, showing how the Empire’s cruelty shapes each character differently. Every quiet moment feels like the calm before a storm you know is coming, and that sense of inevitability is impossible to look away from.
I found myself slowing down just to savor a sentence, only to race through the next because I needed to know what happened.
Then I reached the end and immediately started reading it again.
Because once simply wasn’t enough.
J.A. Williams has officially become an auto buy author for me, and if this novella is only the first fracture in the Threads of Fate series, then The Spark of Rebellion has become one of my most anticipated fantasy releases.
Some stories stay on your bookshelf.
This one leaves smoke on your fingertips, ink beneath your skin, and a rebellion already burning in your heart.
Wow. I will say, I went into this not quite knowing what to expect, as this is my first read by J.A. Williams. May I just say, an automatic one of my favorite authors!
The writing, the formatting, the prose, the characters, the PLOT!! The prose is lyrical, cinematic, and absolutely beautiful. Every ounce of emotion, every action, every scent...I could feel it, see it, and almost taste it. The way grief and emotion are portrayed throughout this book is gut wrenchingly perfect. These characters are navigating unimaginable changes, and you can truly feel the weight and impact of every situation through J.A. Williams' writing.
The history and introduction to this unique magic system are just enough to leave you eager and yearning for *The Spark of Rebellion* (Book One). We get a meaningful look at our main characters and the events leading up to the first book. You begin to know and understand them as they each reach pivotal, life defining moments that will undoubtedly shape the journey ahead.
If this novella proved anything, it's that J.A. Williams knows exactly how to leave readers needing for more. Consider me fully invested and counting down the days until *The Spark of Rebellion*. ✨📚🔥
Bound by Smoke and Ink is the novella before the first book of the Threads of Fate series by J A Williams and is an introduction to the main characters Evander and Aria.
The backstory detailed in the novella teases at some incredible main character arcs to come in the Spark of Rebellion book, which is due out on the 6th October 2026.
Whilst I don’t think you necessarily have to read this novella before you dive in to The Spark of Rebellion, I am so glad I did because I found that it gave me an understanding of them as individuals and left me desperate to get to TSOR so that I can see how they interact with each other when they first meet. The writing is so good that you feel immersed in the world building, and the original concept with the ink was so inspired that I raced through the novella in less than a couple of hours and was left hungry for more.
I’m lucky enough to have been chosen to be an advanced copy reader for The Spark or Rebellion in return for an honest review so I was able to dive straight in to where the novella left off, but I paid for the novella and it was worth every penny. 5⭐️s from me and I think this series is going to be a huge hit!
Consider this prequel novella the author’s application to be your next favorite epic fantasy with romance author! This prequel novella is available to download for FREE which I truly couldn’t believe after just finishing.
It is NOT one of those novellas written as filler for a broader story. THIS is truly one worth reading. You could truly read this in one sitting if you wanted and walk away feeling like you’ve been with these characters for much longer, the writing is so good. It’s descriptive without being overtly so.
It’s written like an origin story where we meet the FMC and MMC when they are young just as their power is manifesting. We not only get to know these characters but also their relationships with their family and siblings. All set in a world with what I expect will be brutal military training for an empire that takes the sons if they exhibit magic while equally condemning the daughters who do.
It’s minimal to no spice but boy does she build longing, yearning and tension quite well in a few scenes.
Be warned that if you read this novella, you WILL want to pick up Book 1 - The Spark of Rebellion. Which, I imagine was the entire point!
"Some would call it a curse. Though I've always thought of it as a gift we've simply lost the instructions to over the years". Is it good? Or is it evil. Perspective is everything.
Two lives. Two childhoods stolen by power. Two entirely different perspectives- one surrounded by love that has been lost, the other surrounded by love that was never there to begin with.
What a world Jessica has created. The writing is beautiful, immersive and vividly descriptive. This is an author who sees a world clearly in her mind and describes it so eloquently that her reader is pulled right in there with her and is able to see what she sees and feel what she feels. It's real and it's compelling.
This Novella is a dual POV origin story which is the perfect way to introduce us to Aria and Evander and the different pressures they face- one must make herself smaller, almost invisible whilst the other must grow in strength to satisfy the crippling need to gain his father's approval.
I managed to make it to a solid 96% of the way through this Novella before I cried. I felt her loss. I felt her fear. I felt her rage. I cannot wait to read the next instalment - I hope she burns it all down.
Bound by Smoke & Ink was an incredible read. It’s a prequel novella, but there is so much packed into this novella, it blew me away. Masterfully done, Williams introduces us to our FMC Aria Fenwyck, our MMC Evander Valcour, as well as influential side characters. Each character is complex, hinting at depths that I’m sure will be revealed as the series progresses.
Bound by Smoke & Ink sets the foundation of the series and Williams starts worldbuilding but it’s so interwoven into the transpiring events that you don’t even realize it. It was magical to read.
In the Empire of Eternal Dawn, magic is not a gift. It is leashed. Controlled. Claimed from the very first moment it appears. The Empire rules with a brutality that is heartbreaking. It was built on lies and, for centuries, every woman who could expose them was silenced. Burned. Until one refused to burn.
He was forged to obey. She was born to break the world that made him. Step into this universe before it ignites.
The prequel, Bound by Smoke & Ink, is available now. Book 1 The Spark of Rebellion Releases October 6, 2026. This series deserves to be on your TBR. It is going to be amazing. I can feel it.
This was phenomenal. I’m not usually much of a novella person - I like my books think, heavy, and with enough heft to basically be a weighted blanket 😉 That being said… read this. Read this right now, or at the very least, before you read Spark of Rebellion (book 1). This novella (just a quick 100ish pages) is one of the best things I’ve read in months. Two chapters in and I was already messaging friends about how hooked I was. It sets the stage for the events of book 1 and introduces some main characters- think one of the “books” within Assassin’s Blade and how it gave some background on Celaena pre-Throne of Glass. The skill level of this author? Chef’s kiss. I easily rank her up there with SJM and Penn Cole (Spark of the Everflame). I cannot tell you how happy I was to read such good writing! The characters, the world building, all of it - JA Williams just does a phenomenal job “showing” you as opposed to telling you outright. It’s excellent. I am so excited for what’s to come! 5 stars from me :)
