USA Today Bestselling Author Anne-Marie Meyer invites you to a failing Montana dude ranch where a grumpy cowboy and a fish-out-of-water city girl discover that the best love stories are the ones you never plan — a sweet, closed-door cowboy romantic comedy perfect for fans of the small-town heart of Sweet Magnolias and Virgin River.
One viral video and suddenly I'm stuck with the grumpy cowboy who can't stand me. I tell myself that our relationship is strictly business. Problem is? My feelings refuse to listen. In a cowboy romance, this would be the perfect meet-cute, but Rhett has made it pretty clear. He is not interested in being the hero in our story.
Ember I'd reached the height of my career. Ember Sage, New York Times bestselling cowboy romance author. I had it all—until up-and-coming author Trinity Lake and her minions got ahold of me. They want authenticity, but I grew up in Chicago, where the closest I'd come to roping cattle was wrangling a seat on the train. Desperate to save any future book deal, I jump on the red-eye to Montana, where my rental truck fittingly breaks down on a back-country road. The nearest sign of life is cattle... and more cattle. If I were the heroine in one of my romances, this would be the start of my very own meet-cute. But this isn't one of my books, and I'm pretty sure there's no grumpy cowboy about to come save me.
Rhett I hate city people. My sparkling personality is why my family has relegated me to the cattle while my three more personable siblings run our failing dude ranch. We're moments from closing our doors when I stumble on a redhead lying in our pasture with a temper to match her hair. I have to rescue her—the last thing we need is a lawsuit. I do my best to avoid her. Until she comes up with a plan. One of her social media posts—the one where I'm the star—has gone viral, and the viewers have spoken. So here's the she films her experience at the ranch to fix her reputation, and in return, she hands us free visibility. Except this time the audience is women, not men. where women can live out their cowboy romance fantasy. I figured my family would reject it. Instead, everyone's on board. I want to fight it, but the more I get to know Ember, the more I realize I had her all wrong. Problem is, I don't know what's real and what's just the plot of one of her stories. And I'm worried she won't stick around long enough for me to find out.Perfect for readers who

Anne-Marie Meyer is a USA Today Bestselling author who lives south of the Twin Cities in MN. She spends her days with her knight in shining armor, four princes, and a baby princess.
When she's not running after her kids, she's dreaming up romantic stories. She loves to take her favorite moments in the books and movies she loves and tries to figure out a way to make them new and fresh.
This was an ARC read and boy was it good! If you have a chance to pick up Cowboyland I highly suggest you do! Its a feel good small town cowboy romance set in Montana and is so well written. Ann-Marie Meyer knocked it out of the park!
Sometimes a bit too predictable but sweet and fun. Ember makes some odd illogical choices. Rhett sounds too feminine in his thought processes. Overall a good read. I am very interested in the other series of this author. I'm considering that maybe this book wasn't the one for me to read first. Don't rely too strongly on the 4 star rating, because most of you would probably give it 5 stars.
This was a swoon worthy story, Meyers never disappoints when you're looking for a book to bring the swoon. Rhett is described as the grumpy cowboy, so I guess that would make Ember the sunshine . . . I don't know if she was the typical "sunshine" that we often see with this trope, but she certainly brought the gumption and determination. There were some great moments. Really a perfect mix of everything you look for in a love story. I also liked that Ember found herself on the Ranch and she made friends with Rhett's sister. You will be cheering for them to get together by the end of the story. There is a scene that gets pretty steamy, but is interrupted and stopped before it goes beyond kissing. Mentioning that since some people don't like that kind of thing. Overall this was a swoony and endearing story that will leave you cheering for the MCs to get together!
RHETT - The Cowboy. He's had his heart broken and now he just wants to work on his family rance and be around the animals while avoiding people. He isn't looking for love again, especially not with another CITY SLICKER who is going to leave like they always do. Loves his family. He will do whatever it takes to save his family's ranch from being sold.
EMBER - She's a best selling cowboy romance author from New York. The reading world just found out that while she writes about cowboys, she has never actually been on a ranch. She decides to take a sudden trip to Montana, no plans, to set that right. What the world doesn't know is she's a romance author who also doesn't have romance. Maybe she can correct both those issues while in Montana, work on a rance learning to be a cowboy and find love.
This is a dual POV story
***Some minor spoilers** If you can read around things that are not accurate in the animal world, this is a cute book. I'm just going to list the things I found frustrating . . . You decide
1. While riding the horse it's mentioned how he made the horse go or speed up . . . He "shook the reins" this isn't a command to make a horse go, unless you have never ridden a horse and you're in the movies.
2. Riding double and he put her in the saddle while he sat behind the saddle. This makes it really hard to control and not really something done except with small children. Double the one in control is usually in front, ESPECIALLY with someone who has never ridden. Doing this while riding at a trot (Authors, please learn more gaits than just TROT).
3. Steering the horse it was mentioned that he moved his left hand to make the horse turn left. This made me think that he was riding 2 handed, which isn't usually the practice on a ranch/western horse, unless a horse hasn't learned to neck rein so they are freshly broke. Yes, you hold the reins in your left... I interpreted both his hands were in front holding the reins.
4. Cowboy/Rancher with failing ranch drove 5 hours to get a deaf mini highland so he could bottle feed it (Plot hole was it heard kissing noises later on). Also, feeding calf raw milk and not milk replacer.
5. Something about having to get down low and hold the bottle from the shower so the calf won't aspirate. Anyone who has fed a bottle calf knows that bottle is getting launched.
6. COWBOY HAT RULE. So this can differ depending on the area, and the explanation was sweet in the story. If a girl wears your cowboy hat that means shes yours. Some of us know this is not exactly what wearing a guy's hat means . . . So beware. *WINK WINIK*
Really these are all minor and I think with more research any other books in the series will be more accurate.

This book is amazing! I love a good cowboy romance and this one did not disappoint. Rhett and Ember are total opposites who somehow fit perfectly together. They have a slow burn romance that's filled with delicious tension but it's definitely worth the wait! If you like sweet romance with lots of heart, this book is for you. I highly recommend it!
The authenticity of Ember’s cowboy romance novels had been questioned, and her original response was the get the nearest flight to Montana to prove that what she writes is REAL. She had no destination in mind. No plans. Definitely not the proper wardrobe. Her singular goal was to prove herself.
And when she finds herself at Rawhide Ranch, saved from imminent doom by the ranch’s very own grumpy cowboy, Rhett, she is given the perfect opportunity to do just that. She would be able to write more authentic stories, and Rawhide Ranch would be saved from its financial problems.
Win-win, right?
Well, at least that’s what she thought. But when she slowly starts to uncover the sweet layers behind Rhett’s grumpy facade, she’s not sure anymore.
Because she doesn’t know if either of them will leave this unscathed.
I really enjoyed this book! The story between Rhett and Ember was super sweet and the character development felt real. I loved how Ember started out semi-clueless about the cowboy lifestyle and slowly learned the ropes. It was perfect and made me feel all the feelings! My first cowboy romance, and one I will definitely never forget.
There were a few small things like grammatical errors that threw me off a bit, (simply because my eyes seek out correct grammar and punctuation) but it didn’t affect the story itself.
The only thing I wished was different was that we were given a longer, more Ember-and-Rhett focused epilogue. I NEED more of those two!
Overall, it was a very good book! Would definitely recommend!
(And I DEFINITELY need a Maisy for myself! <3)
I received an ARC of this book and am leaving this review voluntarily.
If this sounds like a statement that you would make, this book is going to be a must read for you! A cowboy romance author who has never been on a ranch ends up stranded and rescued by a grumpy cowboy whose ranch needs saving? Honestly, what more could you ask for? I love Anne-Marie Meyer's writing. I love cowboy romance. Needless to say, this one skyrocketed to the top of my TBR from the moment that it was announced... and it absolutely lived up to all of my expectations... and then some. I couldn't get enough of Rhett and Ember. The chemistry was flying off the pages, and Rhett truly was the perfect grump (with a bit of a soft spot for animals, of course) who tried hard to fight the attraction... giving us the tension of a slow burn, that truly paid off in the end. Truly, I loved these two. And the concept to save the ranch? It was so fun! While I know this one is a standalone, I'm still holding onto hope that that will change... there are more brothers (and a sister) whose stories I would absolutely love to read. If you love all things cowboy romance, you'll definitely want to add this one to your TBR!
Cowboyland is a closed-door romance with kisses only and some innuendo and language throughout. While the actual book is kisses-only, there is an optional open door bonus scene available on Patreon.
**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 Okay, Anne-Marie Meyer, where is my sequel because you cannot just give me Ember and Rhett and then expect me to peacefully move on with my life??? 🤠😭 These two fought liking each other with EVERYTHING they had, and it was great; their banter was easily one of my favorite parts of the book. They both came into the relationship carrying their own baggage, and I actually understood where both of them were coming from even when they were being stubborn as hell. What really sold me, though, was the character growth. Neither Ember nor Rhett needed the other person to magically fix them. They had things they needed to work through individually, and watching them slowly lower their walls and realize that maybe love wasn’t the enemy??? Delicious. 🤩 Was it a little slow? Yes. I honestly would have taken more banter and WAY more actual couple moments because once they finally stopped fighting what was happening between them, I felt like the ending came way too fast. GIVE ME MY DOMESTIC EMBER AND RHETT CONTENT. And despite this being zero spice, can we discuss THE CABIN??? Because excuse me??? 🌶️ level: technically 0 🔥 chemistry level during that cabin scene: ILLEGAL No explicit scene required. Those two had me clutching my Kindle anyway. 🥵 Overall, I absolutely loved Cowboyland. The tension, the emotional baggage, the growth, the banter, the yearning… and ultimately, LOVE WON. 🤠❤️ Now respectfully: I NEED THE NEXT BOOK IMMEDIATELY
I had such a great time visiting Cowboyland! Anne-Marie Meyer takes a failing Montana dude ranch, a delightfully stubborn cowboy, and a city-girl romance author in desperate need of real-life cowboy research, then stirs them all together into a charming, feel-good story that made me smile from start to finish.
Ember and Rhett are the kind of opposites-attract pair that make every scene sparkle. Their banter is playful, their misunderstandings are believable, and their slow-burn connection has just the right mix of humor, tenderness, and swoon. I especially loved watching Rhett’s grumpy edges soften as Ember found her footing on the ranch and in her own heart.
Meyer’s writing is warm, upbeat, and wonderfully easy to fall into. She has a gift for creating a cozy small-town world that feels inviting without ever losing its comedic sparkle. The ranch setting, the family dynamics, and the clever social media twist all give the story extra personality and heart.
If you love clean cowboy romance, grumpy-sunshine chemistry, and happily-ever-afters that leave you grinning, Cowboyland is an easy five-star read. It is playful, positive, and sweet in the best way—a book I would happily recommend to friends, family, and anyone who wants a cheerful escape to Montana.
I received an advance review copy of this book for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Smokin' hot Rhett is a very stubborn man and does his best to refrain from getting too close to Ember. Being burned in the past by a "City Slicker", he doesn’t want to get his heart trampled on again. He can't deny the magnetic attraction he develops with Ember, and fights it every step of the way!
Sweet and caring Ember, is a New York author determined to learn the cowboy way so she can show her fans that she understands the cowboy romance world that she writes. Armed with a plane ticket, her bags, and an on-its-last-legs rental truck, she starts her journey in Montana to get the country experience she needs to relate more with her writing. After the truck breaks down, she finds herself lost with no cell service. Rhett finds her in his field lying next to a tree. He brings her back to his family ranch in hopes that she will be on her way back to New York as soon as possible.
Insert a ranch that is failing to bring in guests; an author with high social media followers; and a determination to prove to her fans that she knew what she writes about, and you get this cute, funny, slow burn tension story! I loved reading Ember and Rhett's story!
This cowboy romance is everything it was intended to be...heartwarming, sweet, tension-filled, and romantic. I loved the ranch setting and the Winchester family dynamics. Ember was such an easy FMC to root for. She is open, vulnerable, gritty, and authentic. Rhett is the quintessential grumpy cowboy MMC and it was entertaining watching him try to fight his developing feelings for Ember. He was also just the right amount of protective and broody. And then there is the baby cow! I was originally going to rate this one 3.75 but the baby cow got my heart!
This story left me with the feeling of wanting to spend some time in nature, in the open country, in a slower life than the city life. It also reminded me that working together with a common purpose to create something or fix a problem or accomplish something, always brings people together. Even if it isn't always romantically.
If you like sweet HEA romances with no spice, this one is for you.
P.S. I really hope we get a story about Camden and Savannah in an interconnected stand-alone set in Cowboyland!
- Grumpy/sunshine - Small town romance - Found family - Pasture meet cute - Cowboy romance
I loved this book so much! I could definitely see this as a movie.
Ember is a romance author who is getting some heat from her readers since she writes cowboy romances, but has never been to a ranch, ridden a horse, etc. They feel she’s inauthentic. So she impulsively books a trip to Montana and promptly gets stranded due to a subpar rental…
Lucky for her(Rhett disagreed), she stumbled upon his family’s dude ranch. The ranch is low on money and reservations, which means unless they can turn things around fast, it will have to be sold.
With a twist of fate and an unintentional viral video, Rhett and Ember are thrust into a campaign to save both Ember’s career and the ranch. The tractor scene? One of my favorites in the book!
Neither Ember nor Rhett were looking for love, but will they throw away a chance for happiness?
This was so good. I am such a fan of grumpy MMCs. And I have a soft spot for Highland cows…..
Ember Sage is a cowboy romance author determine to write more authentically. She is pure sunshine and definitely in her “to hell with it” era; I LOVED her so darn much.
Rhett is the grumpy cowboy that’s fallen for a city girl before.. Despite his attraction to Ember, he is guarded. Rhett was everything I needed in a cowboy!
Man, if you would have told me I would be swooning over a cowboy romance with no spice, I wouldn’t have believed you. Cowboyland stole my heart with the bookish trope talk, with they, wont they tension, and heartwarming found family. This is an adorable sweet love story that held its own and definitely worth the read.
Huge thanks to Anne-Marie Meyer for the gifted eARC.
Rhett is the perfect grumpy cowboy. He’s jaded, understandably, and can’t seem to get out of his own way even with the perfect girl standing right in front of him. And Ember, she’s so lost and confused with life after online critics tear her authenticity apart. She ends up at the wrong place at the perfect time. The way she set out to prove herself to not only Rhett but herself was chef’s kiss. Both have a tad bit of abandonment issues so it makes trusting the other even harder but when they finally do, it’s everything.
Now we just need someone to make a real cowboyland. Cause I’d be the first to sign up.
This isn’t my first book by this author and it’s definitely not going to be my last. Thank you Anne-Marie Meyer for giving me a copy of this book.
A cowboy romance author finding herself in a real-life cowboy romance? Such a fun setup! Ember and Rhett’s contrasting personalities make their connection entertaining, and I enjoyed seeing their first impressions give way to something deeper.
The ranch setting, forced proximity, and protective cowboy made this a lovely escape. I especially appreciated that the romance could have chemistry and emotional warmth while staying sweet. If you enjoy grumpy/sunshine, opposites attract, and a cowboy with a softer side, Cowboyland is a charming choice.
Anne-Marie absolutely shines when she is writing a grumpy sunshine book and this one is no different!
Rhett is the perfect example of an excellent grump and he is grumpy all the way through. Just when you think he might start showing a little softness, he doesn’t let up and it’s sooo satisfying. The tension between Rhett and ember is phenomenal!
I also loved the little twist that Ember is a cowboy romance, author, trying to experience what she writes about and gets to have her own grumpy sunshine experience. Delicious!
Ember, romance writer decides fly to Montana when she reads her reviews. She needs actual experience with cowboy life. Rhett finds Ember under a tree on his family's property. Ember likes the grumpy cowboy but doesn't plan on sticking around forever. Love the banter between them. They both fight feelings. The love Rhett had for Maisy, a cow that had a hard beginning to life is special. Rhett's reaction when Ember comes up with a way to save the ranch was funny. Savannah was a hoot. Great story!
This book has all of the feels. Ember is a sweetheart. She's a big city girl who doesn't have a clue about ranch life even though she writes cowboy romances. Rhett is a tough cowboy determined not to let his "soft" side show except for beautiful Maisey, the sweet little mini highland cow who has completely won his heart. If you are wanting a great "love story" that makes you think about it, Cowboyland is for sure the way to go.
WOW!!!!! I love Ember (the city slicker) and Rhett (the grumpy cowboy). Ember is an author and Rhett is one of the owners of a ranch, Ember happens to fall into this ranch by accident. It is an amazing book can't wait for the next book. All the characters are wonderful and want to see other budding love between some of the characters. Anne you have to hurry I need a weeding from these two and see what happens with Camden.
I received and advanced copy from author for my honest review
I really enjoyed the enjoyed the Rhett and Ember part of the story. But the whole Cowboyland situation really turned me off of the whole thing. Reading about women paying to live out their cowboy romance fantasies is not a book I want to read. But for those of you that enjoy that kind of thing go for it. The characters are well written and if the plot was different I would love to find out how the rest of the siblings find their one and only.
OMG! I read this so fast. I have seen different pictures of scenes from this book and I could totally see them as I was reading. The bar scene was so good and I love how Rhett reacted to Ember playing pool.
Rhett is a grumpy cowboy to Embers sunshine author. Love this trope.
I want more books in this setting! I want Savannah and Conner’s story.
I wasn't expecting to LOVE a book about cowboys, a dude ranch, and a romance author, but I ended up falling hard for Rhett and Sage's story. This closed-door romance allowed me to use my imagination, and oh, did I! Anne-Marie Meyer is a master of character and plot development. It was a joy to spend time with these characters and this story.
WOW! If you love grumpy cowboys, romance without too much spice this is it! I’m fully vested in Rhett and Ember and you will be too! Get your copy and fall into cowboy land. Thank you to the author for the free copy.
Anne-Marie does it again. Sucks you in from the first page - grumpy cowboy - who can resist. Cowboyland was entertaining and love Ember’s stubbornness to let the ranch not get the best of her! May need to visit a ranch now to see the real cowboys 😂
Such a great story. A grumpy cowboy? Yes, Please!!! Rhett and Ember were so good together and the storyline was amazing. It's everything you expect from Anne-Marie and so much more. Very Enjoyable.
This was a very sweet/swoony cowboy romance with a little steam but no spice! I definitely enjoyed this book and I’m looking forward to the rest of this series! It was a nice, quick book that did a good job keeping my interest!
Absolutely love this book! Such a great storyline. I have read so many Anne Marie Meyer books and each one just gets better and better. Could not put this book down.
I highly recommend this book. I love all of Anne Marie Meyer’s books. I was excited when I was selected to get the arc copy and was able to read the book early.
