Well… for someone who’s not a particularly emotional reader, this one got me more than once.
From the start, I felt Beths grief and emotion seep through the pages.. Losing her mum leaves her feeling lost and the grief is written with real honesty - messy, raw, and never overdone.
I loved seeing Beth and her family start over again in rural Ireland. Buttercup Cottage really sounds like the kind of place you’d want to escape to. But beneath the cosy setting, the story handles the harder moments well. It’s about rebuilding, healing as a family, and accepting that grief is not linear.
The characters felt genuine, and I loved watching the friendships grow alongside the family dynamics. Nothing felt forced—it just felt real.
I can’t believe this is a debut. It’s a beautiful story about grief, love, family, fresh starts, and finding where you belong. If you want an emotional read that stays with you, I’d definitely recommend it.
While my go to genre is thrillers, I prefer not to receive trigger warnings as the darker the better for me. I love the raw emotion and reaction they deliver.
HOWEVER with this book and the sensitive subject matters, I found the trigger warning at the start of the book a very welcome addition. It was sensitive, thorough in its potential triggers and gave helpful coping mechanisms for those who may need it.

This book follows Elizabeth (Beth), and her family and friends, and the struggles and triumphs that she faces.
Following the death of her Mom, Beth & her supportive and loving husband, Tom, choose to chase a lifelong dream and move to Ireland. Beth’s dream had been to live in a small village in Ireland and fully embrace the depth of connection with the community.
Beth is faced with adversity and hardship, as well as blessings and opportunities.
This book was exquisitely written and really drives home the emotions experienced when life throws us a curveball. At times I was laughing right out loud, and at other times I was crying so hard I had to stop reading, take off my glasses and regain control before I could start reading again.
A quote from the book that I will remember that the main character comes to believe is “A reminder that life keeps finding ways to continue, even in the darkest moments.” Indeed, life continues and though the heartbreak at times may seem unimaginable, life continues on.
I recommend “The Distance Between Our Names” by E. Roberts. Though I did feel that the pace at times was slow, and there was extra detail, I am ultimately really glad that I read this book - because of the emotional punch that it packs.

I laughed. I cried. I absolutely sobbed!!
This book completely stole my heart.
From the very first pages, I connected so deeply with Beth. Her struggles, her love, her fears, and the crushing weight of mum guilt felt so authentic. She is beautifully human, and that’s what made her so unforgettable.
The grief in this story absolutely broke me. The way the author portrayed Beth’s pain, healing, and journey was so raw, honest, and deeply moving. Just when my heart began to mend, another twist would leave me in tears all over again.
This is so much more than a story about loss. It’s a story about love, family, healing, resilience, and finding your way through the impossible. For a debut novel, this is nothing short of remarkable. The writing is emotional, immersive, and impossible to put down.
This is one of those stories that stays with you long after you’ve turned the final page. I can’t recommend it enough.

such a wholesome book
This book has a bit of everything going for it, it’s such a feel good wholesome read, it has me laughing, tearing up, shocked, the lot.

This is a heartwarming contemporary fiction novel from a debut author with lots of resonating themes. I especially loved the little northern nods and beautiful family we get to know and love.
The dementia/Alzheimer’s storyline and deep rooted grief as well as the guilt of wavering patience after loss really hit home, it’s beautifully written.
This story follows Beth as she finally starts to live her dreams after moving her family to Ireland to have a small holding and coffee/bookshop only to realise family secrets and life changing events that change things forever.
I cried-these books keep making me cry at the moment, this one was full of heartfelt moments and relatable emotion both good and bad, really pulled at my heartstrings, who knew i had one? Seriously though have plenty of tissues to hand!
I cannot find anything critical to say about this beautiful book, the real life moments are captured and written perfectly!

This book was such an honest and heartbreaking look at real life as it follows Beth through so many major moments, beginning with her parents and carrying all the way through her own children. It does not shy away from the beautiful, messy, painful parts of life, and goodness, there were so many moments when the tears were flowing so freely that my husband kept asking if I was okay.
There were a few places where the pacing slowed down a little, but by that point I was already so emotionally invested in Beth and her story that I honestly did not mind. I just wanted to keep following her life and see where it would take her next.
If you are looking for a story that feels deeply real and is not afraid to hit you right in the emotions, give this one a read. Just make sure you have tissues nearby, because this book did not come to play.

OK, so I rarely cry at books, but I did cry during this one. This story follows Beth as she and her family move to Ireland. We get the beautiful, messy and emotional parts of life, and watch the ups and downs of the family.
What I loved about this book was how immersed I became in Beth's world. You felt her emotions through the page, and rooted for her at every turn.
The book definitely explores some heavy topics, but they were covered in the trigger warnings. I took my time reading, but savoured every moment.

A moving debut about grief, family, healing, and fresh starts in rural Ireland. The characters and relationships felt authentic, while Buttercup Cottage provided the perfect cosy escape.
Although I rarely wanted trigger warnings, this book was thoughtful, thorough, and genuinely helpful given its sensitive themes. And the heads up was useful. A heartfelt read that stays with you.
