Homefront Sleuths #10
The Celluloid Sentry: A Homefront Sleuths Mystery
Lights, camera... murder in Crofter's Green.
Narrated by the brilliant British actress Iona Campbell, whose acclaimed performances have brought Crofter's Green and its beloved residents vividly to life, this latest Homefront Sleuths mystery combines wartime intrigue, clever clues, memorable characters, and the warmth of village life.
June 1942 brings rare excitement to the quiet village of Crofter's Green when the Ministry of Information's Crown Film Unit arrives to shoot a patriotic wartime film. Soon the village is overflowing with actors, cameras, cables, and enough backstage drama to rival anything in the script.
But the glamour fades fast.
When a young Home Guard sentry is found murdered near the ruins of St. Swithun's Abbey—his body wrapped in celluloid film—the Homefront Sleuths discover that the film crew has brought more than movie magic to their peaceful corner of Kent.
The only clues?
A film canister the victim tried to hide.
A scrap of paper covered in code.
And a film set where everyone seems to be acting.
As Evie Harris, Alice Greenleaf, Dorothy Baker, and young Alfie quietly gather clues among suspicious cast members and temperamental crew, Harry Jenkins and Inspector Nigel Brewster begin untangling a web of deception. Meanwhile, Blake Collins and Katherine race to decipher a cryptic message that suggests the chaos on set is no accident.
Because hidden behind the klieg lights is a far more dangerous production.
The deeper the Sleuths dig, the more they fear that the shadowy spymaster Beckett is using the film company as cover for a plot that could cripple Britain's wartime defenses. When Nigel is forced into a dangerous undercover role, the investigation turns suddenly—and painfully—personal.
With trust strained, time running short, and a master of disguise moving among them, can the Sleuths expose the killer before the final scene ends in catastrophe?

It’s no secret that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the Homefront Sleuths mysteries from the first and they just keep getting better with each installment.
This book has it all: a film crew making a wartime propaganda film; Nigel working undercover for Mr Brown; a mysterious coded message; and a murder with more than enough suspects to go around.
What makes this series so special are the characters and how they develop with each passing book. The circle of sleuths, each with their own strengths, have one thing in common: they are true to the end, to their country and to their friends.
Thank you very much to Anna Elliott and Charles Veley and the Homefront Sleuths team for offering me an Advance Reader Copy. It was very much appreciated to be among the first to enjoy this book and this review is given without prejudice. As soon as it comes out in an audiobook I will be reading it again!

I renewed my Audible membership just to get this book because I like the narrator so well and the series.
This one went too far on the suspension of disbelief for me. Nigel would be dead.

The Celluloid Sentry has some of the home‑front sleuths involved in clandestine matters for the enigmatic Mr. Brown, an official in the Special Operations Executive (SOE) in London. The rest are back at the ruins of St. Swithun’s Abbey, providing refreshments to a film crew shooting a patriotic picture for the Ministry of Information’s Crown Film Unit — but is there more to the film’s stars and crew than meets the eye?
The ongoing story of Crofter’s Green has a much‑expanded cast of characters in The Celluloid Sentry. I’m sure you will make good use of the “Who’s Who in Crofter’s Green” at the start of the book. Along with the sleuths, the list includes members of the Crown Film Unit and a long roster of others.
The Homefront Sleuths Cozy Mystery Series should be read in order, as each book builds upon the last. This is most evident in the way the sleuths themselves grow into rounded personalities with both virtues and foibles. They begin as a group of patriots and evolve into a circle of true friends. Reading out of order would disrupt the ever‑changing dynamic of their relationships.
You may notice that some words look misspelled, but they are not. Elliott and Veley use British spelling for words like defence and tyres. This adds a certain authenticity — after all, this is a story set in England during World War II.
If you are a long‑time reader and have not done so, I encourage you to read About the Authors. Even in this standard book fare, Anna Elliott and Charles Veley are at the top of their game.
Elliott and Veley once again deliver a story that blends intrigue, camaraderie, and wartime atmosphere with effortless charm. The Celluloid Sentry proves that this series still has plenty of surprises — and plenty of heart — waiting for readers who follow along from the start.
As always, do read the Historical Notes section. It always contains interesting facts about the real history in the story.

Once again, I received an advance copy from the authors, with great delight, since I like this series so much. (My thoughts in this review are, of course, entirely my own expression/opinion.)
The series has been taking us in chronological order through the events of World War II, primarily in Britain, in a mostly rural area. The one exception was when two of the main protagonists took a trip into France, where Evie had previously been a teacher and then worked with the French Resistance after the German invasion. The series has looked at various aspects of the war, such as rooming of evacuees from London, the continuing danger from air raids, plans of sabotage of Britain's war-waging infrastructure, and the women doing farm work to free men for service as soldiers. This particular novel takes up the subject of creating propaganda films to support the war effort, a process that included the necessity of carefully timing and monitoring the lighting necessary for filming. When one of the sentries assigned to the film crew is found murdered and wrapped up in celluloid film, the Homefront Sleuths need to figure out what the larger plot and danger might be.
As well as keeping the reader in suspense, the excellent writing includes some clever observations of human nature. I quote here one example: "Either you're an honest young woman who notices everything, or you're a criminal mastermind clever enough to hide behind a clipboard." I heartily recommend this book, and the series as a whole, which sadly is coming close to its end (necessary to stay true to the real progression of the war events).

I really look forward to every entry in this series. In this case I was lucky to score an ARC through the authors' website. The stories are a little improbable, rather like the murder rate in Cabot Cove, but I find the characters to be very believable and the small village setting is spot on. Crofter's Green is located near the coastal city of Dover. Dover's harbor is a prime target for a Nazi invasion giving rise to espionage and Fifth Column activity in the area. It's also near a top secret military base and a cottage factory supplying parts for Spitfire manufacturing. It's home to Evie, ex French underground, Harry, ex Scotland Yard Inspector, Nigel, village Police Detective, Alice, herbalist, and a host of others who all play a role in fighting the Nazi threat. The trials of World War 2 are present, rationing, blackout at night, black market operations, frequent bombings, and acts of sabotage. All are well used to give depth to the mysteries. The best part is you not only try to find out who did the crime, but which member of the detective round table will be the one to solve the mystery. The mysteries are well told with each character taking their own chapters to tell their point of view. Perhaps slightly more serious than the average cozy, they are extremely enjoyable and highly recommended.

Our band of homespun heroes and heroines is at it again, but this time on a film set. When a film crew tasked with creating a patriotic propaganda piece arrives in Crofter's Green, Evie, Harry, and the gang hope that the most hazardous things they'll have to manage are entitlement and disruption. But, could the film's cast and crew have something more sinister planned?
This edition gave new meaning to "divide and conquer". While Evie and Harry tag-team to investigate a local burglary attempt, Nigel is on a special assignment, and it's left to the rest of the crew to pick up the pieces. I loved that everyone was actively involved in thwarting this plot, from growing-more-courageous Dorothy to heavily pregnant Katherine.
The first half of this book seemed to drag in uncharacteristic fashion, and I found the film cast and crew a little hard to keep track of. But the action seemed to pick up in part two and it was heartening to see even Harry getting to roll around with the bad guys a bit. There was a little less Evie-Nigel than I would've liked and I'm still waiting (im)patiently for Alice-Harry. Blake got a bit more depth in this round, and I am loving recurrence of Alfie and Pilot. Overall, a solid installment.
The Celluloid Sentry: ★★★★

Always a Crowd Pleaser
The sleuthing gang is back and in the Kent countryside of 1942, the safety of England--its people and its military--is at stake.
The characters are, as usual, endearing, smart, resilient, and dedicated to keeping their town and country safe, as well as each other.
The authors make superb use of humor. The pacing is fantastic.
The details of the enemy's devious plan offers information that many people… myself, foremost… are probably unaware of with regard to military communications, the lines, etc.
Most certainly a great deal of research went into creating this story. The characters are eccentric; the villains are many and not easily discovered.
And as always, there are number of surprises. This father-and-daughter team of authors work well together... I am continually amazed at how exciting the prose is structured.
The storyline is well developed, as are the characterizations in every book of the series.
It is like getting together with old friends with each new installment: I look forward to catching up with everyone in the next book slated to come out very soon.
A pleasure.

This is an excellent series and informative of war conditions during WW 2. I received an ARC for an honest review. The development of the characters continues so you know how they work so well together. The film crew descends on the village to make a morale boosting film. Nigel is contacted by Mr. Brown for a private assignment which he can not tell anyone about. How will this secrecy affect his relationship with Evie, who had to deal with Paul's deception. With the Cozy Cup providing the catering for the film crew what will the ladies discover. Mr. Finch keeps a tight rein on the expenses of the film. Nigel is investigationg a group who are after weapons and ammo to help the German occupation.
Each book in the series builds on each other in giving us the building relationships and hardships each have come through. You look forward to each episode and what will happen next. Highly recommend

The Celluloid Sentry delivers another strong, suspenseful mystery in the Homefront Sleuths series. The authors weave together espionage, character development, and historical detail with skill, creating a story that steadily builds toward an exciting and satisfying conclusion.
The central plot—German spies closing in and Siegfried’s long‑standing vendetta against Evie—adds real tension. When Evie goes missing, the narrative shifts into high gear, and her friends’ efforts to track her down highlight the teamwork and loyalty that define this series. The inclusion of the prime minister raises the stakes and adds a memorable historical touch.
While the first half unfolds at a slower pace, the second half is packed with action and clever twists. The culprit’s identity remains unpredictable, and the historical backdrop continues to feel well‑researched and engaging. This is the best installment yet, and fans of WWII mysteries will find it hard to put down.

Another absolutely gripping read. I think this series just gets better and better. WW2 has thrown up plenty of “what ifs” for the authors and this is a great example of a spy network and Fifth Columnists hidden practically in plain sight. The usual recipe for an “unputdownable” book – a good plot, action, tension, true friends working together using their separate skills, loyalty to each other and their country and, of course we have that little smattering of romance between Nigel and Evie. This time we see Alfie and his dog taking a bigger part in the action too.
I am always excited when I receive an ARC from the author. Each story gets better and the characters evolve a little more. I am an avid fan and look forward to the next in series. If you haven’t read any Home Sleuths books yet I honestly advise you to. I don’t think you will be disappointed.

Another fabulous entry into the Homefront Sleuths series. When a local home guard is killed and staged in a theatrical way, the sleuths get suspicious. Meanwhile, they're keeping secrets from each other... sort of. All of this happens while a movie is being filmed at the local manor, and there are definitely bad guys from previous books at play. Or are there?
With stuff like that, can you blame me for loving it? I especially liked that we got more of Alfie and Pilot. The kid is still being a kid, but he's also learning from Harry, which is great. We also get a bit more romance, which doesn't bother me at all in this series. Haven't figured out why. I guess because it's a natural part of the story rather than a token, "gotta get some folks together" thing.
Seriously, I hope this series has 30 books. At least. I LOVE it.

This is 10 th book in a series. I have enjoyed all of these in audiobook. The narrator does a great job. It’s set in World War II England. In this story, the British government has dispatched a crew to Crofters Green and create a war propaganda film to bolster the spirits of the British. Someone dies, it’s murder. There’s intrigue surrounding the potential involvement of spies trying to send messages to Nazis. The characters that we’ve grown to appreciate in the last several books work to figure out what is going on who is the killer and stop the Nazis from wreaking havoc. Not quite a five star for this one there were times I had to rewind because I found a little bit of the plot to be confusing however, overall if you’ve enjoyed the last several books, you’ll definitely enjoy this one. I like this series because it’s not just a simple murder mystery there’s always a much bigger arc.

The Celluloid Sentry was another very enjoyable read from Anna Elliott and Charles Veley. I’m really enjoying this series and the way each mystery is woven into the atmosphere and events of the Home Front during wartime.
The characters are as engaging as ever, and there’s a good balance of mystery, suspense and the everyday details of life during the period. The story kept me interested throughout, with enough twists and clues to keep me guessing without becoming overly complicated.
I particularly enjoy the sense of time and place in these books, and this was another entertaining addition to the series. If you’ve been enjoying the Homefront Sleuths books, this one certainly won’t disappoint.

I received a copy of this book from the author, but all thoughts and opinions are my own. I always enjoy getting to spend time with the Homefront Slueths and this book was a fun read. When a group making a movie to help bolster moral on the homefront comes to Crofter's Green, murder soon follows. With no shortage of suspects and Nigel often away, this may be the toughest case yet. I found the mystery to be well done and love all the characters who at this point are like old friends. There is always some fun history thrown in that I didn't know about WWII England. I'm looking forward to the next title in this series which will be a perfect beach read.

An exciting movie mystery!
The Home front Sleuths have become one of my favorite series. So much so that I am writing this review well past my bedtime. This cast of characters starts out as acquaintances and rapidly become fast friends as they put their varied talents to work solving mysteries that somehow wind up solving murders and mysteries while protecting England during WWII. While it can be read by itself, you'll appreciate the depth and development of each of these devoted friends if you start at the beginning. Be ready to sacrifice sleep though. Each story progresses through different character's viewpoint which makes for compelling reading.

June 1942 Crofter's Green is invaded by a film crew to produce a patriotic war film, with security provided by the Home Guard. Meanwhile Nigel is given the task to go undercover and infiltrate a fifth columnists group. But the Homefront Sleuths become suspicious of various film members, and investigate, but a murder occurs.
An entertaining and well-written historical mystery with its cast of likeable and interesting characters. Another good addition in this enjoyable series.

I am still enjoying this series. The Homefront Sleuths are once again fighting the Nazis in the village of Crofters corner. When a film crew comes to the village to make a propaganda film, the residents are excited and the sleuths are on the alert.
When a local is found murdered, the chase is on to find the perpetrator The team of sleuths has solidified and they work together to find the killer and prevent the enemy from destroying critical targets. Yes this has been the premiss of every book in the series but, the deeply researched background makes it moe interesting and enjoyable for me.

NOTE: I received an advance copy of this book for free. This review is my honest unsolicited opinion.
Celluloid Sentry continues a great series and forever develops the Sleuths. The plot is twisty, the characters so real, and the pace is just right! Fast enough to keep you going, but comfortable enough at times to really feel at home in the Cozy Cup.
Some new characters in this one; there is at least one I hope to see again!

The Celluloid Sentry. It's never boring in Crofters Green, downright dangerous but never boring. When a film crew turn up to produce a propaganda film, it looks as though there will be some lighthearted entertainment but nothing is as it seems. Fifth columnists and an underground spy network soon bring the Cosy Cup Crew back to the real world. Another great episode in the series, each one more intriguing.

good mystery , all fits so nicely at the end
Another very readable mystery in the series.
The latest obstacle to the town and its residents is a film company and Fifth column operatives all mixed together in the area. The police, the home guard and the tea shop sleuths are running in different directions before they can understand and address the major enemy objective.
Highly recommend

A great series.
I've read this whole series and have enjoyed it immensely. I love the characters, the setting, the time in history. You have a group of villagers who each have something to offer when it comes to a battle of wits with an evil enemy. There's even a fierce dog who does his part in helping to expose and capture those who bring chaos and death to their village and their country. I'll be waiting impatiently for the next book.

This series completely enthralls me with its characters, who now feel like old friends. The twists and turns in the dialogue keep you on the edge of your seat to the very end. I am always sad when I complete the book as I know I will have to wait for the next adventure. I, also, find myself thinking historically how did the people in the small villages in the UK manage to function during the war. I guess they truly did “keep carrying on”!
July 21, 2026
I'm just over it... Couldn't get into this story and realized that the characters are no longer engaging. They're treated in much the same way and never step out of their prescribed roles. A few passages were so long winded and redundant that I even wondered if the author used AI for this. We've got to have some plants for Alice. We've got to have a cypher... and after that kid got killed, I put this down and never went back. DNF

Absolutely adore this series. The combination of WW II history and mystery is such a draw and our eclectic group of amateur (mostly) sleuths have become fast friends of mine. The multiple POV adds even more intrigue and lets us get to really know each character And the indomitable Alfie plays a major role in this tenth Homefront Sleuths Mystery.Hoping there are many more books to come in this series.

I never realized just how exciting living in a small village in England could be during WWII. Propaganda movie filming, fifth columnists, counter espionage infiltration - so much for bucolic country life. This is more like Manning Coles' works than Heron Carvic's, and I recommend it to fans of Coles and Oppenheim.

Good Guys, Bad Guys
Hard to tell who's good and who's bad. The suspects are such jerks. There are always self-important people around. Sadly, during war time, that can be very dangerous. It makes it very difficult to "Carry On" for everyone else. But our sleuths manage to do just that. And catch the bad guys.

A thrilling read.
I can thoroughly recommend this series.
It grips from the.first word. I always plan to spread out my time reading the next boo in order to savour it and end up consuming it in one go. It is well written, the characters are well drawn and believable. It's a thoroughly good read.

The Homefront Sleuths are on the case again, and it’s so good!
This series gets better with each book. I love how the authors have developed the characters over the series, and the mysteries continue to be top notch. The authors seem to have done their research about England at the time and all that was going on.
