Ali Stalone writes voice-forward, emotionally charged romance centered on women reclaiming the parts of themselves they were taught to shrink. With a background in criminology, a master's in legal studies, and a career in legal marketing, she brings a love of complicated systems, sharp banter, and morally gray men with soft spots to every story. Her books blend humor, heat, danger, found family, big yearning, and emotional healing... and probably a man on his knees for the woman he loves.
Thank you to the author for the eARC of this book!
This was my first foray into the mafia romance genre and I wasn’t sure if it would be for me. But I really enjoyed reading this book.
The FMC, Max, is still fighting to build her life back up after a bad breakup with a man that she sacrificed her dreams for three years ago. Our MMC, Cal is a morally grey blast from her past who never forgot her and has been pining after her since they met. I felt that both of the mains were really strong and easily likable characters. Max goes through so much growth and acceptance with who she is and the decisions that she’s made throughout this book. I found it so easy to root for her and her happiness. And Cal… oh dreamy, Cal 🥰 This is a man who knows how to yearn! I loved how his character was so in tune with Max’s feelings and who she was. He truly saw her and enabled her to see herself in the best ways. The romance in this book was so sweet!
The mafia portion of this book, in terms of on-page violence was fairly tame, which as someone new to the genre, I appreciated. This book was very focused on the romance above all else. I found all of the characters to be endearing and I’m hoping we will see more books as a continuation Max and Cal’s world (hopefully we get a book for Becca and Nico..! 😉)
This was such and easy and enjoyable read. Once I started getting into it, I didn’t want to put it down. Cal is perfect! The patience of this man is amazing. I love the dynamic between him and Max. I really liked that she wasn’t this fragile little push over. She thought things through and came at things with a sense of humor when needed. A great little mafia romance. I’m excited for Nico and Becca’s story, that one has to be next! 😅 She is a great best friend, I love her personality! I received an ARC of this book and am leaving my honest review. Thank you!
I love a good mafia romance, and this one did not disappoint. I went in completely blind, and honestly? I don’t regret that decision! One thing to note is that while this is definitly Mafia, it is not what I would consider “dark”, but I was ok with that because the story arc had me hooked from the first chapter.
This story had so much packed into it – hidden identity, years of yearning, second chances one of my favotire found-family dynamices to date, and just enough violence to keep things interesting, oh and plenty of romance and spice!
Max, our FMC, broke my heart right out of the gate. She spent years shrinking herself for a man who not only betrayed her but was genuinely cruel. Even after walking away, she wasn’t really living – she was simply existing, keeping her head down and protecting the pieces that were left. Then fate decides to have her ex and his father move their law firm to her quaint little town, turning her carefully rebuilt life upside down. And let’s just say ... one private plane ride later changes everything.
Cal is the kind of book boyfriend that reminds you why fictional men set the bar so high. He knew she was his long before she was ready to admit it, but instead of forcing the issue, he loved her enough to wait. He trusted that if they were meant to be, they would find their way back to eachother. Of course, Cal isn’t withou his own baggage. He’s carrying the weight of some massive family secres, and once Max becomes part of his world, there’s not going back.
And can we talk about Cal’s family? Because they completely stole pieces of my heart. His loud, loving italian family is everything I want found family to be. His mom rules the house with incredible food, fierce love, and just enough intimidation to keep everyone in line. His sisters are absolutely hilarious and never let Cal take himself too seriously, while his brother, Nico, is the complete opposite – the perfect balance to Cal in every way. Every scene felt warm, chaotic, and full of love.
Then there’s Becca. Every Max deserves a Becca. She’s the definition of a ride-or-die bestie. She’s supportive without enabling, fiercely protective, absolutely hilarious, and always showing up when it matters most. Their friendship was one of my favorite parts of the book because it just felt so genuine, unwavering, and exactly what femail friendship should look like.
Ali absolutely nailed the banter and dialogue. The conversations felt natural, funny, emotional, and every character had a distinct “voice” that made the relationships feel extremely authentic.
And those twists? I genuniely did not see several of them coming. Every time I thought I knew where the story was going, Ali managed to surprise me!
If you’re looking for a mafia romance with heart, humor, action, found family, and characters you will want to spend time with, I’d definitely recommend picking this one up!
Now excuse me while I patiently wiat for the next three books because I need more from this world and these characters.
Max was once at the top of her law school class, with a bright future ahead of her. But her glossy, picture-perfect boyfriend, Patrick, slowly chipped away at her confidence. A narcissist through and through, he convinced her to shrink herself, her intelligence, her ambitions, and even her personality, until she barely recognized who she had become.
The one person who always saw the real Max was Callan Reed, her best friend during the last two years of law school. Their friendship was effortless, built on mutual respect, encouragement, and feelings that never quite had the chance to become something more. Then, seven years ago, Callan disappeared from her life without an explanation.
Now, Max has rebuilt a quiet life in a small town, only to have her past come crashing back. First comes Patrick's wedding invitation. Then, while cleaning out the back of her desk, she discovers a velvet box containing the pen Callan once gave her. Inside is the quote ("Not to let anyone dim her light.") he had engraved alongside his initials, a reminder of the person who always believed in her.
Days later, she looks out onto the street and sees Callan for the first time in seven years. His new law firm is moving in just down the street from her office...and, as fate would have it, it's the very same firm where Patrick works, his father's firm.
I really enjoyed the emotional journey in this book. Watching Max slowly rediscover the confident, brilliant woman she used to be was just as satisfying as the romance itself. Patrick was infuriating in all the ways a narcissistic ex should be, making it easy to root for Max as she reclaimed her voice.
I also loved the best friend Becca brought so much humor and heart to the story, constantly reminding Max that she deserved more than the life she'd settled for. And max's dog, Bart completely stole every scene he was in.
Callan was the perfect contrast to Patrick. He never wanted Max to make herself smaller; he always encouraged her to shine. Their history gave the romance so much emotional weight, and the reunion after seven years was filled with longing, unanswered questions, and undeniable chemistry.
Just when I thought this was going to be a second-chance friends-to-lovers romance, the story took a turn with Callan's hidden identity as Calogero Renzetti and the organized crime storyline. It added danger, suspense, and higher stakes without losing sight of the emotional connection between the characters.
Overall, Shades of Grey & Gold was an engaging start to the series. It blends romance, healing, family secrets, and mafia intrigue into a story that kept me invested from beginning to end, and I'm looking forward to seeing where the Renzetti family goes next. Hopefully Nico and Becca are next...the tension between them in this book has me excited for more.
**ARC copy sent by author in exchange for honest review** 4 stars 2 Spice Genre: Dark Romance Tropes: Mafia, Second Chance, Best Friends to Lovers, Burn the World Main Characters: Cal Reed and Max Simmons
Max and Cal were best friends in college. He continued to be by her side while her boyfriend at the time systematically cut her down, trying to build her up as a picture perfect trophy wife, eventually ending in her dropping out of Law School, and the boyfriend cheats on her with his assistant. Cal seemingly disappeared after graduation and 6 years later, ends up at the law firm of Max's ex boyfriend's father, convince Max to get a paralegal job with them. But things have been very differet for Cal, who's been holding a huge secret from Max for as long as he's known her. And when the family calls him up to take his place as the head of the Mafia, Max can't stop herself from tagging along.
I absolutely loved the characters (minus Patrick, but we're not supposed to like him) in this book. I really enjoyed Max and Cal rekindling what they could have had in college, and still getting sneak peeks of their friendship during that time. And it's very clear in the flash backs that Cal is the "should have been the one," and watching Max make sense of that and jump all in was really fun! Max is also incredibly relatable - her intelligence, quick thinking, quirky sense of humor.
I love Cal because we literally watch him turn morally grey. He doesn't want to be the head of the Mafia, but when his dad dies he realizes there's no choice. He wants the outfit to turn legit, and wants nothing to do with the seedy workings his father had been in charge of. It's such an interesting take to see the morally grey MMC become morally grey when he's not left with any other options.
Few cons - Some of the description becomes a little repetitive. Also, going back and forth between Boston where the book starts, and Providence where Cal's family is at, gets a little confusing because they're both referred to as "the city" and it's sometimes hard to remember where they're at. Other than that, a few minor typos but this is definitely a read that will suck you in as long as you put your morals to the side a bit.
I read this as an ARC, and I have already preordered a physical copy because I highlighted SO.MANY. Lines. Ali Stalone has a way of writing interactions that make you feel every glance, every conversation, and every moment of tension.
This was my first mafia romance, so I don’t exactly have a checklist of what the genre is “supposed” to look like. What I do know is that Shades of Grey and Gold completely exceeded my expectations.
The characters consistently surprised me. They didn’t follow the path I expected, and I found myself completely invested. I was devouring this book while simultaneously not wanting it to end. I was determined to finish today that I even put my Pj pants on backwards because I was reading it on my kindle.
And then there’s Callan Reed.
Callan… you are the ultimate green flag.
The intentionality behind everything he says and does makes this romance unforgettable. The slow burn absolutely burns—but it’s the kind of slow burn that has been simmering for nine years, making every interaction feel earned instead of rushed. I will say, I considered it a slow burn because Ali made you feel those 9 years even though he becomes a love interest quickly on the page.
Ironically, the “mafia” aspects of the story were the least memorable part for me. Some of the darker, action-heavy moments felt a little rushed, and if you’re looking for graphic violence or gore, this isn’t that kind of mafia romance. But honestly? I didn’t miss it. The heart of this story is its characters and their relationships, and that’s where it absolutely shines.
I cried from Chapter 34 all the way through the final page of Chapter 53. It takes a special kind of story to keep you emotionally invested for that long without letting up.
For me, Shades of Grey and Gold is a refreshing take on romance. It’s emotional, intentional, beautifully written, and filled with characters who feel real enough that you’re still thinking about them after you’ve closed the book.
This one earned every one of its five stars. Can’t wait for more from Ali Stalone. And that’s “Stalone” with one “L.”
I honestly loved this book waaaay more than I expected to.
The book follows Max, who is kind of feeling a bit stuck several years after ending an unhealthy relationship with a man who convinced her she wasn't good enough to finish law school. When Cal, one of her closest friends from college, suddenly comes back into her life, she learns that not only has he always been in love with her... he's also a mafia boss.
One of my favorite things about this book was that, despite being a mafia romance, it was just so sweet. Cal 100% falls first and harder, and I am really just a total sucker for that. The banter between them was so much fun, and because they already had a history together, their relationship felt really natural. It never felt forced and I found myself rooting for them from the very beginning.
I also loved that Cal believed in Max long before she believed in herself. Instead of trying to change who she was or what she wanted, he encouraged her to chase the dream she'd given up on. Adnd he let her make those decisions for herself. Watching him help her rebuild her confidence and convince her to go back to law school was one of my favorite parts of their relationship. He wanted her to succeed because she wanted it, and I loved that.
Max's friendship with her best friend Becca was one of my favorite parts of the book. I love seeing strong female friendships in stories, and Becca was exactly the kind of best friend everyone deserves. And they had conversations I could DEFINITELY see myself having with my own besties. I also loved seeing Max become part of Cal's family. Their relationships with her were so genuine and welcoming that they added another layer of warmth to the story.
If you're looking for a mafia romance with a protective hero who falls first and harder, great banter, an incredibly supportive relationship, wonderful side characters, strong female friendships, and found family, I definitely recommend picking this one up. And also maybe a box of tissues.
This one completely exceeded my expectations, and I'm already looking forward to reading more from Ali Stallone.
I went into Shades of Grey & Gold not really knowing what to expect, and I’m so glad I gave it a chance. What started as an emotional second-chance romance quickly evolved into a suspenseful mafia romance with plenty of heart, family dynamics, and unexpected twists.
Max’s journey was easily my favorite part of the story. Watching her slowly rediscover who she was after years of making herself smaller for someone who never truly appreciated her was incredibly satisfying. Her growth felt authentic, and it was easy to root for her as she reclaimed her confidence and chased the dreams she’d put on hold.
Callan was exactly the kind of MMC I love. Patient, protective, and unwavering in his support of Max, he never tried to change who she was he simply reminded her of the woman she’d always been. Their shared history gave their romance an emotional depth that made every reunion, conversation, and quiet moment together feel meaningful.
And then the story takes a turn. Just when I thought I was settling into a heartfelt friends-to-lovers romance, the Renzetti family and the mafia storyline added an entirely new layer of danger and intrigue. It raised the stakes without taking away from the emotional core of the story, and I found myself genuinely invested in both the romance and the family secrets unfolding around them.
Speaking of family, the Renzettis completely stole the show. Their loud, chaotic, fiercely loyal dynamic brought so much warmth and humor to the story, and I already know I want more books centered around them. Becca also deserves a special mention because every Max needs a best friend like Becca supportive, honest, and always ready to remind you of your worth.
While there were a few moments where I wanted the pacing to slow down and explore certain revelations a little more, it didn’t take away from how enjoyable the overall experience was.
If you’re looking for a romance that blends healing, second chances, found family, and mafia suspense, Shades of Grey & Gold is definitely worth picking up.
came to the end of it and had the whole story, you could then appreciate other parts of the book you maybe didn't in that moment.
The book is slow and steady for the first 40% and a lovely slow burn second chance romance. After that the layers of the story really built and I couldn't put it down. This is a light mafia romance and it is something I haven't read before so I didn't understand what it meant, I found myself wanting mafia action in that first 40% but when the book ended I fully appreciated why there wasn't any, it added a refreshing change from what I have read before.
Cal was also unlike any mafia don I have read before, I think the way the author wrote him was brilliantly done and I loved how it really came across that he didn't want to be in that position. I found his personal story unique and he was a beautiful caring MMC.
Max was a little lost in life which I am always drawn to in a character. I loved how she went from strength to strength in this story, really building back to the person she once was before Patrick and then some. The way the author wrote this character's emotions was so realistic I felt everyone of them like they were my own. There is a particular event in the story from Max's pov that was so incredibly written that I felt like I was going through it.
This book truly built up a relationship throughout that should have happened many years previous. Once I finished the book I truly appreciated how well paced it actually was. This book had some great twists, an element of suspense, it had fantastic side characters and was a rollercoaster of emotions. I think this was a fantastic debut novel for Ali and I look forward to what she does next especially if it's Nico and Becca getting together!
Shades of Grey & Gold is far from my typical read. As someone who usually gravitates toward fantasy, I was looking for something that felt easy to read, engaging, and difficult to put down—and this book delivered exactly that.
This is a mafia romance with much more emphasis on the romance than the darker elements, making it feel contemporary and easy to settle into. The story centers around Max, who is emotional, slightly impulsive, and absolutely down bad for Cal. And Cal? A swirling mix of wholesome and morally grey that you can’t help but admire.
The romance was definitely the heart of the story for me, with a friends-to-strangers-to-lovers dynamic that I really enjoyed. I also loved the elements of found family and identity searching woven throughout the story. Those threads helped give the characters and their relationships more depth and made the world feel more fully developed.
I will say that I struggled to get into the first 15% of the book. However, once we moved past the introductions and got more deeply into the romance and mafia elements of the plot, the story really picked up and became difficult to put down.
If I could change anything, I think I would have liked a little more of the darker mafia side of the story. I think exploring that further could have added even more dimension to my good friend Cal. That said, for a dark romance, Shades of Grey & Gold was an easy and enjoyable read, and I had a genuinely great time with it.
Well… except for Chapter 41. That was just painful. 😪
I hope Ali Stalone has an amazing debut, and I can’t wait to see what comes next!
Shades of Grey and Gold completely exceeded my expectations. From the very first chapter, I was hooked and couldn’t put it down.
If you love mafia romance, hidden identities, morally gray men, intense chemistry, and nonstop tension, this book delivers all of it—and then some. The twists kept me guessing, and just when I thought I had everything figured out, another surprise had me racing to the next chapter.
The characters are what truly make this story shine. They feel layered, flawed, and incredibly real. The morally gray hero walks the perfect line between dangerous and irresistible, and the chemistry between the main characters is electric. Their relationship develops in a way that feels earned, making every emotional moment hit even harder.
The writing is immersive, balancing suspense, romance, and emotion beautifully. The world-building pulls you into the dark, glamorous mafia setting without ever slowing the pace. Every chapter left me wanting “just one more,” which quickly turned into finishing the entire book.
This is one of those stories that stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page. Whether you’re here for the romance, the mystery, the action, or the emotional depth, Shades of Grey and Gold has something to love.
An easy five stars from me. I can’t recommend it enough, and I’ll be thinking about these characters for a long time. If you’re a fan of mafia romance with hidden identities, unforgettable characters, and a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat, don’t sleep on this one.
Wow. Just… WOW! Shades of Grey and Gold completely consumed me from the very first page. Ali Stalone has crafted an absolute masterpiece of an emotional rollercoaster. I was sucked into the story immediately, and honestly, it became one of those rare, unputdownable books where the rest of the world just fades away. The pacing was perfect, but it was the raw emotional depth that really blew me away. The sheer contrast of feelings in this book is wild—one minute I was experiencing absolute giddiness and kicking my feet, and the next, I was dealing with actual emotional damage.
What I Loved 💚: • The Characters: I became so deeply invested in Max. There were moments where my heart was aching so badly for her that I genuinely panicked, terrified that the author was going to leave me completely heartbroken. • The Romance: It is a truly beautiful, incredibly sexy, and deeply emotional journey. The chemistry is off the charts, but it's the emotional connection that anchors the story. • The Ending: After all the angst and heartbreak, the payoff is spectacular. Thankfully, we are given a beautiful, well-deserved Happily Ever After (HEA) that made every single tear worth it.
This book is beautiful, sexy, heartbreaking, and ultimately healing. If you love stories that make you feel everything intensely, you need to add this to your TBR immediately. 5 stars isn’t enough! Thank you so much to the author, Ali Stalone, for the opportunity to read an early copy of this incredible book! All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own. - MK
Some books leave me thinking about the story. Others leave me thinking about the people. When I finished Shades of Grey and Gold, I was thinking about both.
Max and Cal first met in college while they were both pursuing law. Years later, life has taken them in different directions, and watching them find their way back to each other felt genuine and earned. I found myself rooting for them from the beginning.
I never felt like I was waiting for the story to get somewhere. Every chapter gave me another reason to keep reading.
Becca had me laughing out loud more than once, and I loved getting to know the Renzetti family. They aren’t just part of the story—they’re part of the reason I enjoyed this book so much. By the end, I realized I wasn’t only invested in Max and Cal. I wanted to know what came next for everyone.
The dialogue felt effortless, the romance had just the right amount of spice for me, and then the book did something I wasn’t expecting.
It made me cry.
Five times.
I’ve learned that’s usually the moment I know a story has made it past my defenses.
When I finished, I wasn’t chasing answers or wondering about a cliffhanger. I simply wanted to spend more time with these characters, and I think that’s one of the best compliments I can give a book.
Thank you, Ali Stalone, for trusting me with an advance copy. Receiving an ARC never influences my opinion, and these thoughts are entirely my own.
Shades of Grey and Gold is a captivating blend of second-chance romance, suspense, and light mafia elements that kept me turning the pages. Even though this was my first time reading a romance with mafia themes, I never felt overwhelmed. Ali struck the perfect balance, making it an approachable introduction to the genre without anything feeling over-the-top or overly dark.
The main characters were incredibly likable, and I found myself rooting for them from the very beginning. Their history together made the romance feel genuine, while the steady build of suspense kept me eager to find out what would happen next. There was always just enough mystery and tension to keep the story moving without taking away from the emotional moments.
I also loved the side characters. Becca was my favorite. I felt like she added so much personality to the story, bringing humor and warmth that balanced the more suspenseful scenes. They made the world feel richer and left me excited to see more of side characters in future books.
Overall, this was an engaging and enjoyable read that exceeded my expectations. If you’ve been curious about trying a romance with light mafia elements but don’t want to dive into anything too intense, I think this is a great place to start. I’m already looking forward to reading the next book in the series!
Shades of Grey & gold is the first book in The Renzetti’s series by Ali Stalone. This was the perfect introduction to a new series. As a mafia romance addict; Shades of Grey & Gold contains some of my favorite tropes including second chance romance, found family, and friends to lovers. Ali Stalone delivered a mafia romance full of heart, humor, and action. Let me talk about the characters of Max and Callan. I loved both of these characters and both of their character journeys. I loved reading Max’s journey of finding herself again. I found myself constantly rooting for her throughout the book. Callan has now set the bar high for my further mafia book boyfriends. He had me swooning throughout the book. The chemistry between them was undeniable, and the history between them made their relationship feel believable. Not only did I like the main characters, but I enjoyed the addition of the secondary characters, especially Becca, she added humor to the book. I enjoyed reading this book. This was a fast paced book, that I ended up devouring in one sitting. The mafia plot line had suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat. I can’t wait for the next book in the series, hopefully it’s Becca and Nico’s story. Thanks Ali Stalone for giving me an opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A huge thank you to Ali Stalone for providing me with an ARC of Shades of Grey & Gold!
This book was an emotional rollercoaster that completely caught me off guard in the best possible way. There is just something irresistible about a he-falls-first bad boy, and when you throw in the mafia element and some chaos- Chef’s kiss.
This story put my emotions through the wringer. I was completely invested from beginning to end, and Chapter 33, 35 & 42 absolutely wrecked me. I may have cursed the author for a moment…but then I forgave her 🤣!
Max is a sweet, intelligent FMC who has spent far too long dealing with the aftermath of a terrible ex. When she unexpectedly reconnects with Cal—the MMC she hasn’t seen since college—the sparks are immediate. Their chemistry is undeniable, the spice is perfectly balanced with genuine tenderness, and Cal’s unwavering devotion made him an absolute top-tier book boyfriend.
This story delivered everything I wanted: romance, emotional depth, incredible chemistry, chaos, suspense and plenty of moments that had my heart aching before putting it back together again. If you love protective, he-falls-first heroes, mafia romance, and books that make you feel every emotion, this is one I definitely recommend!
Shades of Gold & Grey was such an incredible surprise. I went in expecting an emotional second-chance, friends-to-lovers romance, but what I got was so much more. The story beautifully explores healing after an emotional breakup, rediscovering your self-worth, and finding the person who always believed in you.
Max's journey back to the confident, ambitious woman she once was was inspiring, and Callan was everything a book boyfriend should be—patient, protective, and unwavering in his support. I need me a Callan in my life! Their reunion after seven years was filled with longing, chemistry, and all the emotions that make a romance unforgettably fulfilling.
Then came the twist. Just when I thought I knew where the story was going, the hidden mafia storyline completely changed the game. It added suspense, danger, and higher stakes without taking away from the emotional heart of the romance.
This book is the perfect blend of second-chance romance, friends-to-lovers, healing, and mafia intrigue. If you're looking for a romance with depth, unforgettable characters, and a twist you won't see coming, Shades of Gold & Grey deserves a spot on your TBR. I can't wait to continue the series! Hopefully Becca and Nico?????
Thank you so much to the wonderful Ali Stalone for giving me the opportunity to read your debut novel. And what a roller coaster of emotions it was!
Shades of Grey and Gold had me hooked immediately. I honestly couldn’t put this one down. The story was written so beautifully and easy to follow. I really enjoyed that this was a little lighter on the mafia aspect and more about the connection between the characters and the story.
Max is a sweet, intelligent and strong FMC who is building her life back up from the aftermath of her terrible ex. Cal who was Max’s best friend in law school who disappeared after his graduation and hasn’t seen her in years makes his way back into her life unexpectedly. Their friendship picks right back up and Max starts realizing that maybe Cal would have been more to her years ago if she wasn’t under her ex’s control. Their chemistry is undeniable. The spice is just perfect. And the found family is incredible.
This book will keep you up and wanting more. Will take you on twist and turns you’re not expecting. Have you falling in love with all the side characters. And probably shed some tears!
If you love light mafia, second chance romance, found family and it’s always been you…then this one is for you!
Thank you Ali for access to this great book early! This was such a great debut and I will be reading all your future books just from this one!
If you’re a sucker for a good mafia romance, Shades of Grey & Gold needs to be at the top of your TBR list!
Our girl Max is still recovering after a rough breakup only to get an invitation to her exes WEDDING to the other woman and due to a mishap with the most supportive bestie and a mailbox, she RSVPs with a plus one!! Then to find out the ex’s family law firm is moving to town she moved to escape them and her office has been acquired by their office. The one highlight of the craziness, her old college best guy friend Cal works for the law firm and she’s free to rekindle that friendship.
This Second-chance romance with secrets, twist and a man who’s been in it for the LONG game, I couldn’t get enough of this one. So well written and not only had me invested in the main characters but the side characters. The twists at the end had me thinking I knew what was going on only to second guess myself every few pages.
Congrats on such a great debut and I can’t wait for the next installation but I feel like you’re gonna be teasing me with the Nico story for a while 😉
6 stars! Ali Stalone absolutely wrecked me in the best way.
Shades of Grey and Gold had me laughing, crying, and more than once wanting to throw my Kindle across the room. 😅 This is the first book in the interconnected Renzetti family series, and if this is the standard, I already need the rest.
This story gives us friends to lovers, mafia romance, second chance, and one of my new favorite book husbands. Cal has loved her for years, but family obligations and the mafia life kept getting in the way. She’s loved him just as long… she just didn’t know it yet. Watching those feelings finally come to the surface was everything.
The yearning in this book is unmatched. Some of the quotes will be living rent-free in my head for a very long time.
“I wasn’t lost.”
“Our first kiss is going to be something you never forget…”
“Because if I didn’t come see you, I wouldn’t see you today. And that was unacceptable.”
That man had me melting. 🥹
The romance is emotional, the chemistry is incredible, and the story balances heartfelt moments with enough tension to keep the pages turning.
An easy 6-star read for me. I can’t wait to dive into the rest of the Renzetti family books!
I read a lot of romance, so it takes something special to keep me glued to the pages. This one? I couldn’t put it down. It takes a lot to get me to ruin my sleep schedule but this one I was so into and until suddenly it was the middle of the night.
This book somehow made me fall head over heels for a morally gray golden retriever MMC, ripped my heart clean out, and then had the audacity to make me grateful for the experience.
What starts as almost a romcom quickly becomes so much more. It’s about second chances, missed timing, healing after heartbreak, finding yourself when life doesn’t turn out the way you planned, and discovering that sometimes the right person has been loving you all along. I laughed, I swooned, I stressed, and I definitely cried.
The organized crime twist adds just enough danger without taking away from the emotional core, and the chemistry between Max and Cal had me rooting for them from page one.
I genuinely cannot believe this is a debut novel. If this is what this author delivers on the first try, I need the rest of the sibling series immediately.
A big thank you to the author for trusting me to read her debut early.
Wow! Shade of Grey and Gold by Ali Stalone was so much more than I ever expected! 🤯
I went into this thinking I was getting a typical mafia romance. Instead, I got a cinematic rollercoaster 🎢 that had me completely hooked from beginning to end. The twists and turns never stopped coming and just when I thought I had things figured out, the story pulled the rug right out from under me. It honestly felt like I was watching a mafia movie unfold scene by scene. 😍
Ali Stalone’s writing ✍🏻 is incredibly smooth and easy to follow, which somehow makes the shocking moments hit even harder. I was warned beforehand that this is the kind of book where everything seems fine…until suddenly it isn’t. You don’t realize how quickly things have gone off the rails because you’re too busy turning the next page. Before you know it, you’re no longer reading about the family…you’re in the kitchen cooking with them.
This story completely exceeded my expectations and I absolutely loved the ride. The ending left me wanting so much more and I genuinely hope there’s a second book because I’m not ready to say goodbye yet.
I loved everything about this book, from the plot to the pace to the banter. I am so excited for the rest of this siblings stories ESPECIALLY nicos story, he and Bec a may be the funniest character written in a very long time. Think lights out meets the god father
the banter in the book is so well written I couldn’t believe it, it’s difficult to write good entertaining and engaging banter and Ali nailed it.

Memorable Quote “The way I file everything about her for later because there is nothing about her I don’t want to keep. Her eyes. Her hair falling across her face and her eyelashes in the morning before she’s fully awake. The dimple in her right cheek that only appears when she smiles all the way.The way her nose crinkles when she’s frustrated. The way she looks at me sometimes like she’s still surprised I’m in front of her and she still hasn’t finished deciding what to do about it. Like she doesn’t realize I’d lay myself at her feet.I’d do anything for her.Because she’s it—she’s the light’
Shades of grey and gold by Ali Stallone is a MUST READ! Thank you to Ali for providing me with an ARC read!
If you love, found family, he falls first and HARD, Mafia romance, protective MMC, friends to lovers, and a little bit of spice…. This is for you!
THIS IS REALLY 4.5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ Simply for I wish there was more mafia (EDITED- found out this is a LIGHT mafia so this is now definitely a 5star read for me lol)
I honestly LOVED all of the main characters and side characters and hope to see more of them soon! (I’m looking at you Becca and Nico!)
The MMC, Cal, is a morally grey teddy bear in the best way and he constantly had me kicking my feet like a school girl squealing! I do wish we got to see more of the mafia side of things and his role as the “mob boss” since it is a Mafia romance, but I do have high hopes for more of that in the next book if Ali continues the story! (Which I hope she does!)
The FMC, Max, has spent a long time dealing with the trauma of her past relationship when an old friend from her past, Cal, swoops in and turns her life upside down in the BEST way.
This story had me laughing and crying and overall I can’t wait to read more from ALI and see these characters again! I feel like a part of the family already! Also once you finish the book at the end- YOU MUST READ THE ACKNOWLEDGMENT, It was so cute and sweet and made me love the Author even more! I’ve already told my book clubs besties to add it to their TBRs for when it releases!
I did NOT expect to love this book as much as I did. I couldn’t stop thinking about it, and I never wanted to put it down. An EASY five-star rating for me!
I loved every minute of Max and Cal’s story. This is a true friends-to-lovers romance that felt inevitable from the very beginning. It couldn’t be stopped - even when she found out that he’s the head of the Mafia. But Cal isn’t your typical Mafia Boss - he’s a walking green flag. He notices the little things, remembers the small details and treats Max like the queen she is. There’s a couple spicy chapters, but it’s not the focus of the book.
What I REALLY didn’t expect was to cry, but the tears couldn’t be stopped. It took every ounce of self-control NOT jump to the end of the book and see how everything played out, but I’m so glad I didn’t. The ending delivered exactly what I was hoping for and left me completely satisfied.
Ali Stalone has officially earned a spot on my must-read list! I can’t wait to see what she writes next.
This is the first mafia romance I’ve ever read, and I highly recommend adding it to your TBR list as soon as possible.
The story begins with Max, who receives a wedding invitation from her ex-boyfriend, Patrick. Her hilarious best friend, Becca, convinces her to attend the wedding as the perfect form of revenge.
Things take an unexpected turn when Callan Reed enters the picture. He’s not only a successful lawyer but also the head of a powerful mob family from Providence—and he’s completely in love with Max. Now he has to find the right way to reveal the truth about who he really is while introducing her to his family over a homemade Italian dinner with his mother, brother, and two sisters.
This story has plenty to offer: humor, sweet and sexy romance (without being overly spicy), gunfire, kidnapping, revenge, a few Italian mafia traditions and terms, a funeral, and a wonderful second-chance love story.
If you’re looking for a romance with action, family, and just the right amount of danger, this is definitely one to pick up.
If you're looking for your next romance read, look no further! Dark romance. He falls first. Tension. Slow burn. This book has it all! I wanted to throw this book across the room (in all of the best ways) but I couldnt put it down either! The romance is seductive and perfectly spicy. Every scene pulled me in and I stayed up way too late to finish it! The emotional roller coaster was a ride i didnt want to get off of! This book is charming, beautifully written, thrilling... I can't recommend it enough!!! Cal is the perfect dark romance book daddy! Max is his perfect match, with her sassy attitude and banter. All of the side characters brought the story to life; Becca cheering her on in the most delightfully ridiculous ways, and Nico maintaining the moral grey that comes with the mafia scene. You'll feel like you're part of the family and want to crawl inside of this book and live in it. PLEASE READ THIS BOOK!!
This was not your typical mafia/ mob romance! I would say it’s more contemporary with some thriller themes .
But I did enjoy this a lot and I really loved Cal- he was such a good book boyfriend and so swooney ! Everything he said was just so loving and I enjoyed Max too I just felt like she went along with everything a little too easily but she’s in love so I get it! One of the reasons I loved Cal so much as because he pushed Max to be her best and never judged her .
‘My favorite part of the book was the found family aspect - it was very heartwarming and I loved that Max was so accepted into Cals family .
I wish for some more like maybe darker themes- more insight into Cal and Nico’s job and what they did behind the scenes - but overall I really enjoyed this and would love to see a sequel for who I hope is Nico and Becca !!
I would reccomend this to someone who wants to get into mafia romance but still wants the cute contemporary feel!

Imagine living your life in a quiet town after rebuilding it and you get a wedding invitation from your ex - the man who literally ripped your heart out and forced you to have to start over, convinced you to abandon law school and alienated you from your best guy friend….and around the same time, the best guy friend shows up after disappearing for years and you pick up where you left off. You finally think that the universe has righted its wrongs and wham… you find out he isn’t who he said he was and you had a choice, go with him on a random private plane to find out or stay behind and always wonder….. This is a mafia romance done right, ladies (and gentlemen). Ali is an excellent writer and the plot, the suspense, the twists, the spice is all interwoven and comes together for a delectable story that I couldn’t put down. I give it 4.75 stars! I spent the weekend lost in its pages and left me questioning what are the Renzetti’s going to be up to next???
I received this book as an ARC in exchange for my honest review and boy am I glad I said yes, this was one of the best mafia romances I have read to date.
I honestly had no idea where this story was going, and it ended up surprising me in the best way. I loved that it blended a mafia romance with a second-chance feel, even though they never really got their first chance back in college. The fact that they’re both lawyers made everything even more interesting, and I loved how all of those elements intertwined throughout the story.
Watching him wait an entire decade for the opportunity to be with her made the romance so much sweeter, and seeing her slowly fall for him was everything I wanted. Their chemistry was incredible, the tension was so well done, and the spice delivered in all the best ways.
For a debut audiobook, I was honestly so impressed. The story kept me hooked, the romance was addictive, and I can’t believe this was a debut because it was that good. I’d definitely recommend this one if you’re looking for a unique mafia romance with second-chance vibes, plenty of tension, and a satisfying romance.
