Alegacy that has touched audiences all over the world began in Dallas, Texas, in 1972 when Zig Ziglar recorded perhaps the definitive work of his career. Biscuits Fleas and Pump Handles is the compilation of observations, thoughts and research Zig had spent years preparing to present as the foundation of a philosophy born of hope and nurtured with integrity. In this 60 minute recording, Zig lays out a plan for living a balanced and fulfilling life, teaching us that we can have everything in life we want if we will just help enough other people get what they want. The applications outlined in this message have changed lives, built careers, and propelled individuals and institutions to unexpected heights. Used as the cornerstone for all training provided by Ziglar, this program is packed with answers to tough questions in turbulent times.
Zig Ziglar was a motivational teacher and trainer who traveled the world over, delivering his messages of humor, hope, and encouragement. As a talented author and speaker, he had international appeal that transcended every color, culture, and career. Recognized by his peers as the quintessential motivational genius of our times, Zig Ziglar had a unique delivery style and powerful messages that earned him many honors. Today he is considered one of the most versatile authorities on the science of human potential. Ten of his twenty-eight books have been on bestseller lists, and his titles have been translated into more than thirty-eight languages and dialects. He was a committed family man, a dedicated patriot, and an active church member. Zig lived in Plano, Texas, with his wife, Jean.
My learnings: (1) Winning is not everything, but the effort to win is. (2) You can get everything you want in life, if you can help enough people get what they want in life. (3) Just like a balloon of any color would rise in the air, it is always what is inside you that will make you rise. (4) The difference between the big shot and the little shot is that the little shot, when it kept on shooting, became a big shot (5) It is not who is right that's important. What is important is what is right (6) A person who does not stand for something, will fall for anything. (7) If you set the example, you will not have to set the rules (8) You never drown by falling in water, you only drown if you stay there. No failure is final. (9) what you see in others - exists in you (10) The greatest good we can do for anyone is not to share our wealth with them, but to reveal their own wealth to them. There is astonishing talent that resides inside a human being. (11) One person with a belief is equal to the force of 99 who only have interest. (12) People need loving the most when they deserve it the least (13) Be somebody - God does not take time to make a nobody (14) Talking is sharing, but listening is caring (15) Yes, there is a danger in setting goals but there is an even bigger risk if you are not setting them. (16) The average man on the street continues to meander through life following the path of least resistance as a wandering generality rather than a meaningful specific. (17) You are obliged to earn more than you need, because in doing so, you will create job opportunities for less privileged than you. (18) Money, assuming it is legitimately earned, is a yardstick that simply measures the service you have rendered. (19) On reaching your goal, what you become is far more important than what you get. (20) A day is a miniature lifetime. And with a lot of good days, you make a great life !! (21) Good habits are difficult to acquire but easier to live with, and bad habits are easy to acquire and difficult to live with. (22) When we give anything our total effort, we are winners regardless of the outcome.
Motivational speaker Zig Ziglar has a colloquial way of speaking that makes you feel as if he is taking difficult concepts and explaining them in a way that everyone can understand. Indeed, he does admit to speaking at a 7th grade, third month level so as that all can understand, but it’s more than that. The concepts are simple and easy to understand, but he also speaks with a familiarity to the topic at hand; he too went through the same lessons and now just wants to help you succeed and be your very best.
Zig’s maxims offer simple and reasonable practices that can help all of us be and have all that we want. We all want the same basics: to be happy, healthy, prosperous, secure, have peace of mind, and have good relationships with friends and family. We can get those things when we change what we are and where we are by changing how we think. We can grow, acquire, do things, and most importantly, be more.
Zig declares that you must be before you can do, and do before you can have. Adjust the way you think to change your life for the better. Have the right attitude as words paint pictures in the mind, and the mind goes to work to complete the picture. Paint the picture in your mind of what you want to have happen and have faith in the future as it positively affects your performance in the present.
A familiar message that a positive attitude will take you far presented in Zig’s enthusiastic and friendly style. An easy listen with relevance for all.

I grew up on Ziglar, and I like to dip back into his work from time to time. It's been years since I read SYATT, and it seemed a good starting book for my new goal of reading at least 30 min of personal development books each day.
The book is structured like a staircase, with the idea that if you build on the foundations of each step before moving to the next one, then you will eventually make it to the Top and find success. The early steps are about self-image and attitude and goal setting. This is all good stuff, though not really anything you have never heard before if you have ever read a self help book.
Unfortunately, I found myself skimming the last 30% or so, as Zig talks about habits and work. This revised version has a lot of ranting about drug use and wife swapping and immoral television. Don't forget the godless communists, too. In fact, he inserts a whole chapter at the end about how we need to be ever vigilant that the slow communist takeover than began with social programs in the 1930s doesn't eventually make us all slaves of Communism. If I were reading Mark Levin or Glenn Beck, then this last third of the book would not shock me. But with this book, the reactionary politics are so tacked onto what started as a good personal development book.
A lot of it was added in the later revisions, too. He mentions South Park and American Pie, for instance, as well as the Reagan-created miracle of the Berlin Wall falling. (the book was originally published in the 1970s) Plus, original versions of the book used to have "for further reading" lists at the end of each chapter. Those lists are now gone. I can only speculate as to why. Perhaps the writers were not Christian enough for this later superevangelical Ziglar? Or maybe it's simple business -- "Why should I sell their books, when I could be pushing mine?" Whatever the reason, a fine resource has been lost.
I give the book an overly-generous three stars because the first 2/3 are still pretty solid and useful. As well, I want to recognize that it's a classic of the genre. But if you must read it, see that you find an older edition with the white cover.
I've been disappointed in the past by books labeled as "Business Classics" ("Think and Grow Rich" comes to mind), but "See You At The Top" definitely deserves this moniker. Ziglar provides a realistic and sustainable framework on how to achieve success. His model of focusing on self-image, relationships, goals, attitude, work and desire (and how to improve each) allow you to focus on what is most important. His chapters on goal-setting are some of the best I've read on the topic. My only complaint is that he does lose a little focus during the chapters on forming habits, but he returns to his core message fast enough. For the first time in a long time I actually believe I can achieve success. I wish I would have read this 20 years ago - I would've been better off. One warning: The book relies heavily on religious imagery and principles. It's not over-the-top, but readers should be aware that it makes up a significant portion of the book. Either way, it's a definite must-read.
I found Zig Zigar's 'See you at the top' to be a most pleasurable read. The book is well written and easy to digest. Zig conveys his lessons in the form of short stories and personal experiences, all of which are easy to relate to and easy to identify with. The book is a good motivation read. If you want to make a change in you're life or just looking for that little inspiration, this book will provide it. As an overview the book concentrates on building `YOU', by looking at self-image, relationships, desire, achievement and proactive-ness amongst other things. The only bad point is that I found certain sections too be slightly too religion biased, but this does not really detract from a quality and an inspiration read. I will be recommending this too my friends as, I feel they too will benefit from this.
This book was one on the more painful experiences I have endured in my life. Against the wise advise of Nicholas, I was determined to finish this book and I can safely say I regret it. If this book spent as much time being as helpful and life changing as it talks about being so, it’s impact would rival that of the Bible itself. Zig Ziglar spends 385 pages discussing how to change your life and yet somehow still manages to do no more than scratch the surface of every arbitrary topic he discusses in his annoyingly small print. Zig spends 200 of his 385 pages talking about how helpful this book is to developing the Self, but I think I’d probably consider it as a self help book the same way I consider my six year old cousin when he does his “tricks” into the pool. They don’t really count, aren’t that impressive, and shouldn’t really be encouraged for the sanity of the responsible adults forced to spectate. Perhaps I’ve been a bit harsh because this book has given me a strange entertainment as Ive begun taking an Adderall, drinking a monster, and then sitting down to see how many pages I can get through before I fall asleep. It seems 7.5 is my limit.
If you are considering reading this book I’ll give you a brief summary to save you the hassle.
-Don’t hate yourself.
“If you don’t quite get that yet then reread that part until you do because this book has helped loads of people and you can be one of them.”
-Be a decent person.
*extended excerpt about someone who has read this book and it miraculously changed their life*
-Set Goals and write things down.
“If it hasn’t sunk in yet then just start over and read this book again until it does.”
-Be optimistic, Smile more.
“Just fake happy until you gaslight yourself into being happy!”
“If you disagree, then read this book again until you don’t”
-Work hard for what you want.
*extended excerpt about someone who is somehow radically successful solely as a result of reading this book*
-Make sure you really know what it is you want in life.
“If these pages haven’t changed your life yet, then start over and read them again.”
*30 pages on Communism*
Congratulations! You have now read See You at the Top, by Zig Ziglar.
And if this review didn’t change your life, just read it again.
There is some undeniable wisdom here in this book, but it was also problematic for me for a few reasons and a bit too political for my taste. Zig Ziglar's writing style is simple and easily digested. He takes the approach of using simple and quirky anecdotes that demonstrate valuable lessons about life and work. However, the book is also undermined with a great deal of right-wing, conservative, political dogma. Even still, I really liked the good parts, and am critical enough to be able to separate the gems from the trash, and I caution others to not accept all the ideas wholeheartedly here just because they "sound good." Ziglar is sneaky with it, mixing a bit of logical truth in with his own personal conservatism philosophy. Even though this was published in the 1970's it still reads like a typical right-wing agenda platform that you would see today. Some examples are Ziglar's focus on the immorality of porn, premarital sex, homosexuality, alcohol, abortion, gambling and and more of the like. It's not that I don't disagree with some of these things, but he clearly is enforcing a political agenda. He infinitely praises capitalism (i.e. the free enterprise system, as he dubs it), which isn't a bad thing, but he he idealizes it and neglects to mention it's issues. Also he thinks we should have "nuked" the communists and other "godless countries" and praises Israel in their invasion of Palestine. So yeah, lots of political dogma here.
Now that I've trashed it, I still got a lot from it, and will go back and refer to the many parts that I highlighted throughout it. It has a great emphasis on hard work and personal responsibility and putting your ability into action no matter what. That I can appreciate about it. I'm not naive to the point where I disregard great truths and lessons just because of the source. It talks a lot about improving the personal self-image and utilizing a powerful tool that we all have–the subconscious mind. It also stresses being a "great finder" in seeing the good and using attitude to control situations instead of situations controlling your attitude. Those topics are where this book shines the most and is invaluable in what it teaches.
A must-read for everyone who's willing to see the world from a different lens! The book was written in 70s but Zig's anecdotes, references, philosophy as well as humor are still very relatable and relevant. This was the first time I was laughing out loud while getting motivated at the same time.
"How you see your future is much more important that what has happened in your past." - Zig Ziglar
Not a literal reading of the book by the same title, Zig Ziglar’s See You At The Top audiobook is a series of the author’s presentations to live audiences on various topics from the book, plus periodic commentary and summarization for clarification. Ziglar, one of the very first self help leaders, peppers his talks with hilarious stories and one-liners, delivered in his inimitable rural Mississippi accent. With perfect comedic timing, he makes practical suggestions for improving self esteem, getting happier and healthier, changing adversity to thriving, and raising well adjusted children.
It’s interesting that Ziglar’s first book, See You At The Top, was rejected 39 times before it was finally published in 1975. He went on to publish over 30 books. At the time of the audiobook/presentation recordings, he had not solicited speaking engagements in several years, and was typically booked out 2 years in advance. So it does seem like his methods work. Essentially, his methods are about treating people respectfully and with humor, including ourselves.
Zig was a self-confessed Dallas-based Christian who loved his country. A few of his stories hardly seem politically correct today. However, his intent was never to put anyone down, quite the opposite. He strove to uplift everyone with his funny stories and sometimes odd suggestions. For example, his ideas of renaming the opportunity clock (alarm clock), go light (stop light), and strong end (weekend), or responding “outstanding, but I’m getting better,” when asked how he’s doing are a bit wacky, but just might work. I’m neither Christian nor Republican, but I can’t find fault with anything that Ziglar says because he sincerely wants to uplift people, and also states that he doesn’t expect anyone to 100% agree with him. And many of his suggestions, IMHO, are valid.
True that one suggestion, listening to self help audio material, might seem self-serving, yet it’s sincere. He doesn’t leave it at “buy my product.” He suggests the best times to listen: in the morning when the effect is greatest and can last throughout the day, when in a good mood because the suggestions are easier to hear and apply, and in the car so that you don’t need to schedule extra time in your busy day. He also recommends other motivational speakers who have had an impact on his own life.
Self help folks, you owe it to yourself to experience this audiobook by Zig Ziglar, a founding father of the movement. I guarantee you’ll have some laughs and pick up some practical tips to improve your quality of life.
Zig Ziglar was one of America's top original salesmen, and 'See You At The Top' helps you to recognise and improve your greatest asset - yourself. The book is a fascinating read as well as entertaining, with many techniques and patterns of thinking to reveal the best you you can be.
I read the original 1974 version, which if read by any liberal today would have them screeching that Ziglar is 'literally Hitler', for Ziglar has a few sections at the end reserved as a warning against immoral behaviour. Ziglar is unapologetically Christian, who makes pains to point out that America is headed for dark times if unchecked drug use, drinking, pornography and homosexuality continue. He warns of the dangers of Communism and the uneducated youth and even had an accurate page of the socialistic hellhole that Sweden has allowed itself to become. Looking at his warnings 40+ years later, Ziglar was right on the money.
Needless to say, I'll be re-reading this book throughout my life.
You'll have to skip about 3-5 minutes of a rather boring story in the beginning. but after that it's Zig Zig Zig. Info contained here is contained in other Zig books, seminars, etc... but hey, it's all absolutely necessary to get nailed into your head, spirit, and soul.
This is one of 'must-have' books. I am sure it was not enough to read it only once. There is so much information that every reader might start applying right away. I like the concept of taking stairs in order to achieve success. There is no a shortcut in that journey and you truly have to go through this process step-by-step. The steps are self-image, your relationship with others, goals, attitude, work and desire. Ziglar describes in details the goal setting piece giving a simple to follow strategy. Also, I was amazed how much love he had for his country and how much he believed that you build a strong country by developing a strong personality and cherishing a family unit as a fundamental basis of the society.
This book will never be out dated. The ideas, philosophies, and metaphors will stay with you for life and can be applied anywhere. Zig is real, down to earth, and offers no excuses and doesn't allow you to offer them to achieve the successes that life has to offer. The book builds, helping the reader to better different areas of their life one at a time, ultimately building to the whole person. This book is never done, because you can always pick it right back up at anytime and start again. For myself, this book has been a great motivator for rough times.
Everyone should read this classic book. So much that you may have heard before comes from here. You can truly make the world better if you focus first on just building a better you! Then focus on what you can do to make other's lives around you better. As Zig says "you can get everything in life you want if you help enough other people get what they want."
It took a little while to get through, but that may have been that there is just a lot to digest, think about, write notes on, etc. And in the end I'm sure it will be one I read again (and again)
This is a great book and has some old cliches that ironically still hold true. A classic self help book. Zig Ziglar is an icon and is still doing motivational seminars as of this writing...July 2007. TAcoma, Seattle: July 2007 Get Motivated seminar. Especially good information can be found in chaptor 4... 15 steps to a healthier self image.
